Preseason GM 3: the 49ers

I'm very upbeat after last nights game going into the the regular season starting with the Colts in about a couple weeks.
Yea it's tough to accurately assess the teams performance last night with the 49ers going with so many non-starters but
that's beyond the Texans control. But the team was playing in a spirited fashion, hustling on offense and defense ,and in particular the Oline looked good and was moving people backwards.
If anybody needs to be concerned from last nights game it's the 49ers HC & GM who must still be thinking to themselves this morning, "how many first round picks did we give up and invest in this QB who's supposed to be our starter this year" ?
And hey you know ownership( whoever owns the 49ers ?), has got to be thinking the same thing about why did they go all-in for Lance in the 2021 Draft ?So no matter how much and how hard the Prime Video crew last night tried to explain away Lane's listless performance, hey San Fran you've got a problem at QB ! Better not let Jimmy G. walk away too quick.
Well so much for the 49s who really have a problem at QB, but anyway like lots of folks I'm always pulling for the underdog, the long-shot. So wow how about that rookie undrafted Dlineman from Notre Dame ! Yep that kid made the team last night if he hadn't already made it, and I'm not talking PS, I'm talking 53-man roster. You betcha that feels good !

They looked pretty good for what they had out there. The thing that impresses me the most is the heart, desire and fire this team seems to play with. It def appears they have bought into whatever Lovie is selling and are willing to put it all on the line for him.

I will stick with my prediction of 6 wins on the season, but I think this team will def keep us in most of them

I bet they could have added some quality OL pieces for the cost of Lance…

The scrappy nature of this team is evident. I love how the defense flies around to the football. Jerry Hughes was playing like his job was on the line last night. An ideal leader for this defense. Lots of effort all around. Great to see!

Nobody is declaring the Texans Super Bowl contenders, so the negative Nancies need to calm the ferk down! All I’ve read were observations on the guys that did stand out. For those that keep throwing a temper tantrum and repeating that “49ers played almost none of their starters” on offense, guess what? Neither did the Texans! Not really directed towards you, as there are several posters crying, trying their best to discredit the few guys that stood out last night.

Never said anybody was in line for SB tickets, so you can calm the "ferk" down too.

I'm just reminding the pom-pom waivers, and the Debbie downers as well, it doesn't matter if they had won every game 40-0 or lost them all 40-0, it's not the same game we'll see on Sep. 11. So you (in general) can get pumped about a 3-0 preseason, or you can nitpick things like not playing starters, blah, blah, none of it means jack.

Like I said, we still don't have any idea what this team is going to look like when all the 1's are playing the other team's 1's for 60 minutes. Individuals stood out that we hope translate, but we haven't seen this team yet.

Did the 4-0 pre-season Lions look like a 0 win team?

Preseason is a different game. There’s no game planning, you’re rotating 75 guys in and out, playbooks are vanilla, we don’t know anything other than some individual performances that stood out that we hope translates when everybody is playing 1’s for 60 minutes.

Yeah, the Texans won it by 17 and the run game looked spectacular. With that they still had just 98 yards of offense in the 1st half. Again though, vanilla playbook, lots of people who won’t be on the field on Sep. 11, so we will see then.

These are things we know. But the point of preseason is evaluation, and the team looks good.

When watching it live last night, I thought it looked like a well thrown ball that Conley just didn't react well to. Conley really showed no effort to go get the ball.
If it comes down to conley or dorsett at wr cuts...I would go with Dorsett all day and twice on sundays...he seems to have better hands and run better routes. Too many simple mistakes by Conley and not enough shown to warrant keeping over Dorsett

Debbie Downer is more positive than you.

Exactly but as usual some fans just have to rain on our little parade. Like one member said pee peeing in our corn flakes.

I liked seeing Freeman at FB. I wish they would have given him more reps and maybe they have in practice. He looked decent as a lead blocker. And if the difference is negligible between him and his competition for FB i’d rather keep him as FB since he presents more of a threat as a runner and allows Pep to be more creative in his playcalling having two RBs on the field together.
So far he looks pretty good receiving the ball as well.

Thank you for reminding me. I almost forgot the other 600 times you reminded us.

If there's a better wr to be found on the ww or after cuts, they both should be let go. I'm hoping for Beasley after week 1.

I'll agree some individuals looked good. Pierce, Rivers, Hinish, Pitre to name a few, but did the team really look good, especially when Mills was under center? They still had just 98 total yards in the 1st half. But pre-season with that too.

Thank you for reminding me. I almost forgot the other 600 times you reminded us.
You're welcome. Maybe 600 times is the number.

Debbie Downer is more positive than you.

We are all new fans to this team and they are merely giving us an unsolicited education on the game this time of year…

How we decided to all become fans of a team that has won 8 games in the last two years I don’t know. I guess its all a blur… I don’t know how we’ve accumulated thousands of posts on this forum either in such a short time!

They are merely educating us football peons on how preseason works.

I know it's only preseason.

But... defensively I like that we saw more than just cover two shell.... "Tampa Two" after they drafted Pitre, you just knew they were going to be doing somthing different.

Pitre is a fun player to watch. I am looking forward to seeing Harris get healthy and take one of those starting LB slots as well. Lots of speed added to the defense!

Yes only 98 yards with some bad calls, and no starting LT or starting C...but hey that wouldnt make a difference...I mean its only the LT and the C...what part do either of those really play on the offensive line

dont forget the PI's that werent called...I really wish he would have thrown to the sideline side on the endzone throw that got picked off after the fight for it in the air...
That play should have been a TD. It was a back-shoulder throw that the WR should have easily stopped and caught, but Moore tried to finesse the catch, and got it knocked away for the INT.

The Niners starting O-Line comprises of all back-ups and rookies.

I'm not sure any of them had even started a game in the NFL.

That was why the Texans D looked competent.
Regardless, the Texans D has looked competent or slightly better than that all preseason. They can only play who is put in front of them. I'll take our guys looking competent against rookies and back-ups as opposed to our guys looking bad against them! I hope we will be fine. If not we have another draft and off season to go a long way toward setting us in the right direction.

There was still an emphasis on running the ball. An unhealthy emphasis with different combinations. The goal was not to rack up yards for the sake of racking up yards.

If you’ve been reading Lovies PC transcripts I think he explains some of that. When constantly asked who the RB‘s will be he always makes reference to those that run hard and finish strong. He recently defined finishing strong as running hard at the end of the game. I believe from that he’s still trying to figure out the RB room after Pierce. I wouldn’t be surprised if we picked up a veteran name after the cuts.

I don’t mean it as a criticism. I understand. We were 31 or 32nd running the football in 2021. We need the work.

I’m just saying (if you follow the conversation) is that we shouldn’t focus on 98 yards of offense.

Enjoy the process

I think that weapons for Mills is the biggest question the team is trying to figure out. None of the RBs are those bell cow, give them the ball and watch them get yards type of RBs. More the, give them the ball so the defense has to stay honest and the QB can rest. They had some flashes but nothing that makes you go that guy is going to make some noise. On the WR side Metchie getting cancer and being out seems to have really thrown a wrench into their plans and again none of the WRs we have are guys who you can say "That guy is an NFL WR1" other than that is the position they have been put in.

Pierce showed more than a flash to being that bell cow RB Lovie so longs for. Just DP said,”he has to do it during the regular season as well”. For some reason the offensive line blocked much better when he’s in there. I haven’t seen any negative yards from him in those two games.
Yes losing Metchie hurts. But he’s still an unknown in the NFL. Cooks, Dorsett, Collins and even Moore will be an ok unit.
The position that concerns me the most is the Tight End group.

I meant announced as backup sooner or later. Good chance he takes over starter position.

Quessenberry might prove to be a good value signing. Backup interior OL with previous starting experience and room to grow for sub 2 million. Not bad Caserio!

His brother David went cheap to the Bills as well. Surprising since he played pretty well for Titans last season. I’d prefer DQ over Heck as a backup RT that can play OG as well.

The OL was moving the LOS with ease early in the game. Not so much by the time Mack got in there. Mack looked good when he got through the line untouched. He's still got good speed, but it's the slow build kind. He's not getting to the LOS quick enough.

But I liked the tosses we saw tonight. Guys like Mack & Freeman could benefit from that... Pierce & Ogunbowale too, moreso.

I'd still like to see Freeman with the starting line. He doesn't have the cutting ability Pierce does, but he'll break a tackle or move a pile if he has to. If he could be a viable fullback that would help solidify a roster spot, imo.

Im really trying my best to understand what other fans be looking at when watching these games. Mack went for 55 yards, 5.5 a pop with 24 yards being the longest. That’s with the offensive line not really moving bodies and opening up lanes for him to run through. So I’m over here wondering what is old buddy watching. How is that an indication that Mack is washed and Burkhead who rushed for 28 yards with the same amount of carriers and a whopping 2.8 yards a pop. Not only that but Burkhead was afforded the luxury to run behind the same line that Pierce ran behind. He was then barely getting a yard a pop. Ha old buddy says he’s serviceable and Mack is washed.
I just don’t get it and I will never understand the logic behind it either.

I don't remember saying Burkhead was serviceable. I'm pretty sure that was not me.

As for Mack, watch his runs. He had a couple of good ones. A couple he took what the line gave him. A couple, the line didn't give him crap. His only good runs, was when there was a gapping hole where he was untouched. & then one toss sweep, where he got out to the edge before the defense.

I'm just telling you what I'm seeing. I hope when we get our starting OL in there, there will be gapping holes everywhere & Mack can run free. Be nice to see well blocked screens from time to time as well & he'd probably eat those up.

Mack increased his YPC through a big run caused by Kenyon Green opening a lane the size of the Panama Canal.

Wasn’t talking about you but the party you were engaged with did say Burkhead was serviceable while Mack was washed.

I struggled consistently watching the game as I was at a concert, but from what I did see, our defense looks solid, our run game looks to have potential, but Mills is slow with his reads. I think it can improve, but right now he progresses through his reads very slowly. He will get eaten alive come the regular season.

I think he leans pretty heavily on his #1 option (Cooks). Which is normal for a young QB. His processing will look improved when he has a target who can get open quickly (Cooks) and he can get into a rhythm with quick hitting passes early in drives.

Why, do you think we'll need more blocking? :kitten:

On the plus side he seems to have a pretty quick release when he does throw. Didn't notice much time between when he pulled his arm back and when the ball starting flying.
