Preseason GM 3: the 49ers

The Niners starting O-Line comprises of all back-ups and rookies.

I'm not sure any of them had even started a game in the NFL.

That was why the Texans D looked competent.
The Niners had only one "somewhat real starter" playing: No. 56 Samson Ebukam, a former 4th rounder by the Rams. The Niners just signed him to a medium-sized 2-yr contract totaling $12M.

The rest of the guys starting on their D tonight (including 94 Omenihu) are either back-ups or rookies.

I like the trifecta of QBs we have on the team between Mills, Driskell and Allen. Nice to know if one goes into a slump you have two others that can step up. I don't mind at all going thru the season with these three, and if Mills can't take the job maybe one of the other two will have enough time to prove that they can. And I might add I'm all about Mills, and hoping he can take this QB position by the throat and not look back.
I love this coaching staff and can definately see what a difference a "teaching & coaching" staff can do as opposed to a "coaching" staff as we've pretty much seen during the Kubiac and O'Brian regimes. The teachers are what we've been missing.
Looking forward to the season!
If Mills struggles, Allen is intriguing. However, we know who Driskell is and I don't have any faith that he would "step up".

If it’s the same part where you’re reminded that he hasn’t done it against NFL starters yet.
One guy is making a point that our defense line only looks good because the 49ers weren’t playing starters on the OL. (The interior will be starting, they’re just 1st year starters)

Another poster points out that it was an UDFA wrecking the interior line. Not a starter. Not a starter. That’s the point. Not a starter.

He’s just trying to be the football hipster enlightening us new fans with his knowledge of the NFL preseason. Only teams that play the Texans suffer from backup-itis. Even the Texans backups aren’t actually backups playing against backups because… ummm reasons bro 😎
He reminded me of why I left this message board for so long...ugh...so damn negative and toxic

Still watching the game, but the Texans need to hit the waiver wire for RBs hard...

They got one good one. This can't be the stable heading into the season. Mack looks washed and Burkhead can be useful as a dependable fill in, special teams guy but he's not a good number 2 back either. Ogunbuwale (sp?) looks like he's got some pop...

Starting Oline and Dline both look really good. Pitre continues to shine.

Mills looked more comfortable as he got more snaps, but it was against backups so meh...

To me he still looks a little unsure...I didn't get that sense from him the times I watched him last season...

They are going to need to lean hard on the running game...Having Tunsil and Cooks will probably help him a lot too.

Yep, Pierce will be ground down like McCaffrey if he carries this offense. I don't see how Ogunbowale wouldn't be RB2. Mack is nowhere near the same player he was pre-Achilles, and Burkhead has lost some juice too.

Same as Thorn's.

No @Thorn was saying HE has learned to never read into preseason. Your post seems more aimed at trying to insure everyone else doesn’t. It’s a good thing to because I’m pretty sure everyone here has never seen preseason games, particularly Texans ones, so we might think that the Super Bowl champs and two playoff caliber teams were going all out and we still beat them. I’m just glad you could save us from our ignorance.

My post was to give some examples (but not exclusively) why we shouldn't put much stock into the pre-season games.
I thought that's rather simple to see.

Did you really think anyone here thought that the 49'ers were starting all their starters on both sides of the ball? Really?

I think what you really wanted to do was to let everyone know that we had no Gary Kubiak coaching and therefore would suck until the Texans hired either a Kubiak or a Shanahan

The OL was moving the LOS with ease early in the game. Not so much by the time Mack got in there. Mack looked good when he got through the line untouched. He's still got good speed, but it's the slow build kind. He's not getting to the LOS quick enough.

But I liked the tosses we saw tonight. Guys like Mack & Freeman could benefit from that... Pierce & Ogunbowale too, moreso.

I'd still like to see Freeman with the starting line. He doesn't have the cutting ability Pierce does, but he'll break a tackle or move a pile if he has to. If he could be a viable fullback that would help solidify a roster spot, imo.

I’m really happy they played Pierce and then pulled him. As much as I liked his performance against the Saints, I’ve seen guys have one breakout game and then sort of disappear. I wanted one more game to confirm my thoughts from game 1 and boy did he confirm.

He’s the best Texans RB since Foster hands down, and he reminds me of Foster in some ways, probably more physical.

I’ve said this very same thing to my peeps Porkster! We got a new ‘Da Man’ for sure!

Well said…my thoughts as well.

I liked seeing Freeman at FB. I wish they would have given him more reps and maybe they have in practice. He looked decent as a lead blocker. And if the difference is negligible between him and his competition for FB i’d rather keep him as FB since he presents more of a threat as a runner and allows Pep to be more creative in his playcalling having two RBs on the field together.

Side note: Can you imagine next season if they draft a stud RB to pair with Pierce long term and they can run two RBs with Pierce playing the FB role while also getting carries?! Long term goal!

Looked like Conley actually slowed down about 5 yards to soon and was paying most of his attention to the defender.

Yep. Good throw by Mills, placed the ball along the sideline where only Conley could catch it. But Conley failed to locate it in time. Perhaps that needs to be addressed in practice that Conley should’ve ran his route heading toward sideline assuming ball would be placed in that location?

lol, a shutout.

Yeah it's just preseason but does this really look like a 4 win team?

Did the 4-0 pre-season Lions look like a 0 win team?

Preseason is a different game. There’s no game planning, you’re rotating 75 guys in and out, playbooks are vanilla, we don’t know anything other than some individual performances that stood out that we hope translates when everybody is playing 1’s for 60 minutes.

Yeah, the Texans won it by 17 and the run game looked spectacular. With that they still had just 98 yards of offense in the 1st half. Again though, vanilla playbook, lots of people who won’t be on the field on Sep. 11, so we will see then.

A lot of people liked the Redskins more, but the squeaky wheel gets greased. However my issue wasn't with the name change, it was inevitable, the name was outdated and derogative.. Honestly I think the league was tired of dealing with the controversy and hearing about it.

My issue is the name they chose. There were a lot of Native Americans who looked past the "Redskins" and viewed the team as their team. Cowboys and Indians rivalry and all. You want to get rid of Redskins (I get it), however they could've and should've just renamed the team in a way to still honor the people.

Washington commanders sounds like a team in a old cheap video game that couldn't afford licensing fees.

Washington commanders.. Might as well renamed them the Washington Charlatans, it would've fit better, but what do I know.. I'm the fan of a team named the Houston Texans 🤔
They renamed Washington Redskins and now the Commanders. Two years of “working the brand” to even copy the hashtag from a 2019 team. They are using the same hashtags and stole the same colors. Copied the San Antonio Commanders and stole the hash tag #TakeCommand. Everyone knows who the real Commanders are. D.C. Mayor Muriel Browser also approved it.
The XFL San Antonio Commanders are coming back in February 2023 and the flag has already been thrown on the Washington Commanders.
Living in San Antonio for decades and we loved and enjoyed our San Antonio Commanders and had a great season too. It'll be fun having them back here locally to watch some live games at the Alamodome. Great support for them.

Nobody is declaring the Texans Super Bowl contenders, so the negative Nancies need to calm the ferk down! All I’ve read were observations on the guys that did stand out. For those that keep throwing a temper tantrum and repeating that “49ers played almost none of their starters” on offense, guess what? Neither did the Texans! Not really directed towards you, as there are several posters crying, trying their best to discredit the few guys that stood out last night.
