It was remarkable and they lost to 3 better teams. The NYG SB the Bills had the better team and still lost. Hence the underachiever tag.

Let's just face the facts. Moon was the leader of a team that had the biggest playoff choke in NFL history. He followed that up by choking against the Chiefs in the 2nd half and lead to the Oilers leaving the city. For these things I dont think he should be in the HOF despite his gaudy stats. This period of Houston football is when I learned to not believe the stats because stats aren't the be all end all.

Fair enough. I'm just not reading the same attitude from you about Pardee being responsible for 35-3 with the same zeal that you seem to always go after Moon.

It was Pardee's team. His scheme. His lack of football acumen to build a complete team that could protect a 33 point lead in less than a half of football.

The Cleveland Browns are setting the table to trade for a former Super Bowl starting quarterback in the likely event that Deshaun Watsonis suspended longer than six games.

Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reported that the team is considering whether to pursue San Francisco 49ers signal caller Jimmy Garoppolo should an NFL appeal to Watson’s suspension result in a longer punishment.

“The Browns will consider acquiring Jimmy Garoppolo if Deshaun Watson’s six-game suspension significantly increases upon appeal, league sources tell cleveland.com,” Cabot reported on Thursday, August 11.

Browns Changing Course on Backup QB Jacoby Brissett

Garoppolo has been considered a viable option in Cleveland ever since NFL commissioner Roger Goodell decided to appeal Watson’s suspension — an indicator that the league did not believe the quarterback’s punishment was extensive enough based on his violations of its code of conduct policy.

Cabot’s report Thursday represents a clear shift away from the line the Browns had been holding under center, which was that backup Jacoby Brissett would take the reins in Watson’s stead. Brissett was one of four quarterbacks the franchise acquired this offseason — along with Watson, Josh Dobbs and Josh Rosen — both before and after Cleveland traded four-year starter Baker Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers.

A move toward Garoppolo means two things: that the Browns’ front office isn’t willing to trash an expensive season before it even begins, and that they don’t believe Brissett is a long-term solution who will result in the team winning in a meaningful way.

Somewhat ironically, Brissett was actually teammates with Garoppolo behind Tom Brady with the New England Patriots back in 2016. Brissett has also been a member of the Indianapolis Colts and the Miami Dolphins, amassing a career record of 14-23 as a starter across all three stops.

I have the same thoughts about Pardee as I do Moon. (Couldn't win the big games)

The biggest blunder Pardee made.....trying to be a gentleman in the game of football. Pardee just couldn't bring himself to stomp the living the living dogshite out the Bills by coming out full throttle in he 2nd half. Game could've been 70+ to 3 had Parcells, Belichick, Noll, Ditka, or any other prime HC been at the helm. In the locker room, Pardee should've emphasized that the score was 0 - 0 and there's no staring at the scoreboard until the final whistle blows.

To be fair even among that list only BB really pushes the idea of keep the foot on the gas the whole game. Pretty much every other coach may not make stupid mistakes but they also start looking at saving players for the next game when they have that kind of lead. That being said there have been to many miracle comebacks for any coach to think a game is over at the half or even with 2 minutes left.

I agree with you. Fun regular season teams to watch but always disappointing in the end.

Where we disagree is how much of the blame should be on one man when that defense melted like butter in a microwave.

Tonight's game could be a costly one for the Browns. Their starting C was carted off the field with what appeared to be a serious knee injury. In the next to the last game last season, Harris was taken off the field with a significant knee injury and did not return the rest of the season.

Kevin Stefanski downplays disappointing showing from Deshaun Watson

For the first time since early January 2021, quarterback Deshaun Watson played football on Friday night. In three series, he completed one of five passes for seven yards.
Coach Kevin Stefanski assessed the performance in a post-game press conference.

“I think he probably wants some throws back,” Stefanski said. “Obviously, playing football for the first time in a while, I thought it was important to get out there with his teammates in this scheme, just hearing a different voice in the helmet, those type of things. I’m sure he had the butterflies and the jitters early. But I think he understands there’s work to do.”

Stefanski said he doesn’t believe the drama regarding Watson’s off-field issue affects his performance. Stefanski also downplayed the idea that not playing with other starters was a factor.

“They had a bunch of players that they don’t play either,” Stefanski said. “So I don’t look too much into that. It’s just — you know, it’s our first game out there. And I think you could tell. You know, I think Jacksonville had one game into it. So for us, just to knock some rust off and then get back to work.”

Stefanksi remained appropriately even keeled about the situation with Watson.

“I think this was important for him to get out there in a game setting, under the lights, with new teammates and go operate,” Stefanski said. “It wasn’t going to be perfect. And even if it was perfect, you can’t overreact to that either. So I just think it was all part of the progression for him.”

As to the apology unexpectedly issued by Watson before the game, Stefanski seemed to welcome it.

“I’ve been around Deshaun now for a few months, and I know he wants to grow,” Stefanski said. “I know that he does. And that’s personally; that’s professionally. And I think he’s very, very serious about doing that. And I think that’s part of that next step for him.”

It’s a step that is coming far later than it should have, frankly. So much could have been avoided if Watson had acknowledged his behavior and made real amends when the claims first were made. If he had people around him who had spoken had truths instead of circling the wagons, maybe that would have happened.

The reckoning always comes. The question is whether it’s embraced or resisted. The longer it’s resisted, the worse it tends to eventually be.

Deshaun Watson has had as rocky of a run in the last two years as any quarterback in NFL history. After a 2020 season that saw praise from many, the quarterback soon faced a long list of women who accused him of sexual misconduct. Between that and wanting a trade, the quarterback sat out the 2021 season.

Over the next year, the quarterback slowly whittled down his massive legal backlog until it reached a point where the NFL could settle with a final suspension. The final decision is still pending, but the quarterback is banking on seeing the field this season. With the season right around the corner, fans are starting to think pragmatically about his prospects. How will the quarterback fare in 2022?

Some think he will be a breakout success immediately, while others think he'll be a bust. While he's had good seasons in his career before, multiple signs point to the quarterback being a bust in 2022.

Between the rust, pressure, and the under the radar fact that his decline began in Houston, the quarterback has too much to overcome to hit the ground running, or even upright in 2022. Here's why the quarterback is on course for a rough outing this season, assuming he does make it into a regular season game.

#1 - Rust


Anyone who has stepped away from a job for a sizable length of time and returned will remark just how quick rust can set in. That rust can take a long time to wear off, as well. The brain tends to forget things it deems unnecessary, which is where the term "use it or lose it" comes from.

Deshaun Watson hasn't used his football muscles for a year and a half. He may have been watching tape or throwing in self-directed drills, but the quarterback still hasn't played the game. It showed on Friday when his first pass was an ugly overthrow in his first preseason game since 2019, thanks to Covid canceling the 2020 preseason.

Therefore, not only is he rusty from his absence, he hasn't benefitted from a preseason since his third year in the league. As such, the quarterback's struggles will manifest into rough production in 2022. In the NFL, where it is already quite difficult to win due to the ferociousness of the competition, it could feel like a rookie season all over again for him.

#2 - Pressure


Deshaun Watson is walking into the 2022 season with more eyes on him than anyone not named "Tom Brady." Some would argue the quarterback has received even more attention than No. 12. While Brady is well-adjusted to the pressure that comes with the spotlight, Watson is not, especially when the spotlight comes from a distinctly negative place.

People tend to focus on the negative. While Brady generally has a positive, football-focused spotlight on him, Watson has a negative mainstream spotlight on him. Meaning, he's drawn attention across sports and mediums over the two dozen allegations of sexual misconduct. On top of that, he signed a record-setting deal this offseason.
With the ink on the page dry, the pressure on Watson's shoulders will be immense and coming from all different angles. The Browns bet a lot on their new quarterback. They got rid of what many saw as a quality quarterback in Baker Mayfield for Deshaun Watson.

They took on a PR nightmare, and their ruined their bank account for him. If he doesn't deliver, the team will be quick to heap even more pressure on the quarterback. With so much pressure, it will be harder for the quarterback to remain focused.

#3 - Watson's decline already began in Houston


In Houston, the quarterback saw quality and improvement pretty much across the board in his first three years with the team. According to Pro Football Reference, the quarterback started 3-3 in 2017. Then, he went 11-5 in 2018 but lost in the playoffs in their first game. In 2019, he went 10-6 but won a playoff for the franchise.

However, 2020 was a different story. While he threw for a career-high 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions, the Texans went 4-12. In a quarterback-driven league, wins and losses fall on the quarterback's shoulders, especially when they fall that far under .500.

While the statistics are good, the NFL is about winning football games. Even if he's not rusty in 2022 and finds a way to beat the pressure, his last look on the field was with a losing team. As such, it would take a miracle for the Browns to get a 2019 version of Watson after nearly two years of inaction, combined with all of the distractions.
