Texans 2022 Free Agency Thread

Now that Watson has been traded, what impact does that have on our cap?

I think I heard on 610 that the Texans now have about $28M of cap space, with $15M + required for signing the draft picks.

So we may have $10M - $13M for signing FA's. This doesn't seem like much. Maybe one bigger signing???

I could see a Cooks extension where his cap number comes down 4-5mil.

Fairbairn is currently like the 5th highest paid kicker (4.3 cap number) as well so I think he will need to rework his deal or be released. Waiving him as post June 1 cut saves 3.5 million.

Jimmy Moreland who we acquired during the season did not play much and was a healthy scratch several times. He is schedule to make 2.5 million, I don't see that number staying as well.

One of Scharping ($3m)and McCray (2.5m) seems like they will also be let go.

It's little moves like this that can also free up $10-$15 million which would offset our entire draft class, which would still give us $28 million or so to sign free agents, make a trade to get better or even just for a team to dump a player like we did Osweiler for draft capital.

Looking at available free agents. In terms of “value signings” that could be impact players I think the RB position is worth a look. It didn’t work out last season but if the team can improve the OL via the draft then chances of success greatly increase.

Rashaad Penny and Leonard Fournette are still available. Fournette played behind a Warhop OL. Penny finally looked like a first round RB down the stretch. Neither should cost too much due to their position. But both could be major contributors to this team and prove to be high value selections.

That’s not to say still don’t add a RB in the draft. But adding Penny or Fournette gives a team that wants to run the ball a capable back to do so.

Either of these would be upgrades for our RB corp. I slightly lean towards Penny.

I'm not very familiar with Penny. Would he be considered a "bell cow" RB like Lovie has indicated he is interested in?

Both are first round RBs. Both can carry 20 times a game (though Penny only touched that mark last two games this season).

I’d favor Fournette due to his added 3rd down value as a pass catcher. But Penny may finally be realizing his potential if his late season run is any indication.

Add one of these guys and another RB in draft and the Texans can play smash mouth football.

Good to see KGH back! The Texans are loading up on LBs in FA. I doubt LB will be high on their list. Hopefully that means they will address the trenches early.
Didn’t they sign as many to the DL & the OL? Keke. Jordan Jenkins, Malik Collins with Blacklock & Lopez.

Aj Cann, Justin Britt, Morrisey, Tunsil renegotiation.

Of course, none of these guys are irreplaceable except Tunsil with his dead money.

I think it’s wide open what the Texans do in the early rounds.

Pretty much how FO would want it to look - keep 'em guessing!

You’re right. Guess i’m placing a higher weight on the “new faces”. Solid contract to Maybin and trading for Cashman.

Penny is very talented but also very injury prone. Fournette isn't a good fit for the Texans with where they are in their rebuild.

If you want a good young healthy RB go with DeEarnest Johnson or Marlon Mack.

Not a stud in the group. Certainly not a pass rushing edge.

But you're right, we dont know. I'm just hoping the trenches get fixed with high picks that can be long term foundation pieces.

Nick The Sterio. Your voice to text comes up with the best nicknames.
Yeah I guess but it's frustrating. With Tunsil it often comes out tonsil or tinsel. Usually I proofread for spelling but sometimes when I'm caught up responding to several different posters I just say the heck with it let it roll.

Everything that we have seen publicly from NC and the FO says they want don't want to tip their hand in any way. I think NC's non-committal comments about Davis Mills at QB reinforces this. I think this may be the reason that the Watson negotiations irked some people on the board because they thought the days of being predictable were over. Let's hope that was an aberration.

I think you should have a solid core to build around. Improving where you can when you can.

still need playmakers at every level

Another reason they resigned some of the JAGs (Eric Murray comes to mind) is to allow the rookies to beat out some vets and those vets won't rock the boat. Veterans don't like to be outplayed. They definitely don't want teach their replacement how to outplay them and put them out of a job. It takes a certain type of maturity that you probably don't see a whole lot of in the NFL.

Marlon Mack has played 7 games in 2yrs if that doesn't sound like a Texans player I don't know what does.
We have had one of those full-back thingies before but I don't think we used them. Sort of like tight ends...

I heard a rumor that said if we can keep Tunsil and pharaoh from moving too soon we could increase our win total.

As the Spartans said to Phillip of Macedon, "If."

I did not see this waiver wire pickup from a couple of weeks ago, but I have to congratulate Caserio on this pickup. Robinson was a 4th round pick of the Cowboys in 2020 and someone a lot of members here were very high on coming out of the draft. Didn't see much action as a rookie and was moved from CB to SS. Sat out 2021 on IR with a turf toe.

This reminds me of the Tavierre Taylor pickup from last year. Still on his rookie contract, no need to give away a draft pick. Give your coaching staff something to work with no risk.

Keep up the good work, Nick.

Even when the Bengals were terrible during their rebuild, they signed Hendrickson and Reader to long term deals. Why is it the Texans are refusing to sign good young players to long term contracts? Steelbtexan posted by 2023 they should be in the playoff and a real playoff threat. Thats not close to happening when you don't sign sub 26 yr old players with years. In addition to the afc will all the good young qb, they may not be in or sniff the playoffs until 2026. Jacksonville is going to be that team in this division with Pedersen and Lawrance for awhile. I mean they got to the championship game with Blake Bortles. They have 100m of cap space and they just overpaid for Kirk. They also have a superbowl caliber coach.

So Bengals went from cellar dweller to Super Bowl participant in two offseasons.

Texans have the two offseasons and four first round pick opportunities. Next offseason is the spending spree offseason once the dead money from GM OB era contracts is cleared.

I’d say @steelbtexan timeline is reasonable.

O'BRIEN left this team hamstrung.
Next off-season, Carstereo will not only have picks, but bookoo capspace as well so if he does unearth some talent this off-season, he will have the cap space to throw some cash at them and keep them and to lure players to the Texans.
We are going to see a huge turnaround in Texans fortunes over the next two seasons. Bank it.

Salary cap. It's been mismanaged. We're not where we should be.
Not managed the way you would like. Managing the cap the way Caserio did last off-season allowed him to unearth 4 or 5 players that will be part of the rebuild.

Bottom line is there will be plenty of money available in fa next off-season.

None of that answers the question that was asked, why aren’t we bringing in guys like Dj Reader

Difference being that the Bengals started way ahead of where the Texans did

The only reason why we’re in the green is because Fingers boy wanted out. That alone saved the Texans a lot green to use next off-season.

Not really “a lot”

considering they have to sign their rookie class & round out a 90 man roster & consider IR roster movements… Watson’s savings were like you said, just enough to get into the black.

Caserio still has to find a way to free up more money just to get through the season. I doubt we’ll even roll over $3M into 2023

I don’t watch the Bengals. Please explain.

one year they were 2-14, two years later they’re a bad OL away fromwinning the Super Bowl
The year after going 2-14 they were able to add the #1 overall pick who happened to be the best QB available and then added Tee Higgins in the second and then 5 more depth pieces in the draft plus they had cap room to add quality FA's including Reader. They had AJ Green and Sam Hubbard plus a decent secondary and 2 good RB's... thats a huge headstart over what the Texans had last year
