MY WEDNESDAY COMMENTARIES ARE UNCHANGED.

I NOTICED THAT MY CANNON AND BURKHEAD WEDNESDAY COMMENTARIES WERE ACCIDENTALLY ERASED WHEN I HIT REPLY.

BURKHEAD..............HIP MUSCLE STRAIN COMPENSATORY TO HIS QUESTIONABLY REHABBED KNEE (DEC 2020 ACL REPAIR).............WILL NOT PLAY SUNDAY.

CANNON.............AS I POSTED BACK IN JUNE:
Following OTAs, Marcus Cannon underwent "minor" arthroscopic cleanup. From what I have been able to garner, it was a floating piece of meniscus. Cannon has significant problems with his ankles and toes, but not with his knees. He is expected to be able to return for TC.
..WITH SO MANY LOWER EXTREMITY WEAKNESSES, IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TIME THAT THE CORE BECOMES A PROBLEM.............AT THIS POINT IN TIME, IT APPEARS TO BE MUSCULAR, BUT FOR A TACKLE THIS COULD BE AN ISSUE THAT TAKES QUITE A WHILE TO RESOLVE..............AND ONCE RESOLVED, RECURRENCE IS A COMMON PROBLEM, ESPECIALLY WITHIN THE SAME SEASON...............HE WILL NOT PLAY SUNDAY.............IF IT IS EVEN A GRADE I MUSCLE STRAIN, HE SHOULD PROBABLY GIVE IT A REST FOR AT LEAST 2-3 WEEKS.

From what I saw from Cannon last week, I think the OLine will be better this week with Cannon out.

WEDNESDAY'S COMMENTARIES STAND.

CB WADE SUFFERED A CONCUSSION IN PRACTICE...............NO WAY HE PASSES THE PROTOCOL PRIOR TO THE GAME.

SO NOW THE PATRIOTS STILL HAVE 4 OF THEIR OLINEMEN NOT PRACTICING WITH NO CHANGE IN THE 2 COVID PLAYERS STATUS.

MY PREVIOUS COMMENTARIES ON THE NOTABLE PATRIOTS PLAYERS REMAIN UNCHANGED.

THE STATUS OF LT WYNN AND LG ONWENU IS STILL UP IN THE AIR. THEORETICALLY THEY COULD STILL PASS THE PROTOCOL AND PLAY SUNDAY..........OR NOT.

IF THE COVID PLAYERS DO NOT GO, IT WOULD LEAVE ONLY ONE OF THEIR STARTING OLINEMAN........THEIR STARTING CENTER DAVID ANDREWS................AND THE PATRIOTS WOULD HAVE TO BE VERY CREATIVE IN HOW THEY RECONSTRUCT THEIR OLINE.

Any idea of the recovery timetable?
Herniated discs need rest. Without seeing imaging of the spine, it would be difficult to answer that question with any accuracy. Even with the aforementioned information, conservative treatment recovery is very variable..............anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months. If conservative treatment by 4 months is unsuccessful, then microdiscectomy is likely the next step.

Patriots CB Mills will not be able play against the Texans tomorrow.

The DB situation for the Patriots is getting interesting.

CB Wade has already be ruled out. CB Jones (ankle), safety Dugger (hamstring), and safety/special teamer Davis (knee) are all "afflicted" and questionable. Starter Jackson and backup Williams are the only ones who weren't listed on the injury report this week, although Jackson played with a knee injury last week. And the Patriots' best CB Gilmore was traded to Carolina.

Gilmore was on the PUP list. He wasn't playing anyway.

As pertains to Tunsil, what the team reports as a wrist/hand injury seems to actually be an injury involving his left thumb. At the top of my list would be an ulnar collateral ligament tear from having his thumb bent back and out, with or without fracture.

1633913440907.png

Sometimes the ligament itself will not tear but instead pulls a small piece of bone off the base of the thumb where it attaches. This is called an avulsion fracture. This can also lead to an unstable thumb joint if the injury is not repaired correctly.

We'll know more after x-rays, and MRI if needed, are performed.

Consistent with my thoughts. This is what Culley had to say about Marcus Cannon:
It's a serious thing that he's got. In order to keep him for the long haul, whatever we need to do on IR, that was the right thing to do to get him back later.

Sources: Laremy Tunsil has torn thumb ligament, will eventually need surgery
By Aaron Wilson Oct 11, 2021

Texans Pro Bowl left offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil was diagnosed Monday with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb after a magnetic resonance imaging exam was conducted, and the injury will eventually require surgery, according to a league source not authorized to speak publicly.

Tunsil is going to attempt to play through the injury, if possible, and could forego surgery until after the season if he's able to handle his blocking assignments. The UCL is attached to the middle joint of the thumb, which keeps the thumb stable to allow to pinch and grasp objects.

Tunsil has wisely decided that he cannot perform effectively with his injury. He will not try to play through it. He will undergo repair.
What's a reasonable recovery timeline for a surgery required for his injury? 610 was speculating earlier that he might have been encouraged to have it repaired to be healthy before the trade deadline.

Trade deadline would have little to do with it, and much to do with significantly compromising performance with the use of only one fully functional hand.

If he were a skill position, he would need ~7 weeks. As a non-skill player, he might get by with 4-5 weeks

BRITT...........IF HIS ACL REHAB PROGRESSES THROUGH THE WEEK, HE WILL LIKELY PLAY SUNDAY.

BROWN...........SHOULDER SUBLUXATION................WILL HAVE A PROBLEM RETURNING THIS WEEK, WITH OR WITHOUT A HARNESS.

TUNSIL........SHOULD BE ON IR, NOT ON THE INJURY REPORT.

AMENDOLA............THOUGHT HE SHOULD BE READY FOR THIS GAME, BUT MY PHILOSPHY IS THAT SOMEONE COMING OFF A HAMSTRING SHOULD BE ABLE TO PUT IN FULL PRACTICES THROUGHOUT THE PRECEDING WEEK..........BUT I WON'T BE SURPRISED TO SEE HIM TROTTED OUT THERE SUNDAY.

BURKHEAN..........AS A RB, WITHOUT A WEEK OF FULL PRACTICE, HIS HIP POINTER SHOULD KEEP HIM OUT SUNDAY.

GRUGIER-HILL............AGAIN, WITHOUT A WEEK OF FULL PRACTICE, IN HIS CASE A RECENT HIP POINTER SHOULD KEEP HIM OUT SUNDAY.

*****Since they played Monday night, the Colts only did a walkthrough therefore the practice report is only an estimation of each players participation if there was a practice. Since this is a short week, I would take today's DNP with a little grain of salt...........But..........

K BLANKENSHIP [HIP]...........SUSTAINED A RIGHT HIP INJURY [UNLIKE FAIRBAIRN, NOT A GROIN ADDUCTOR TEAR, BUT A HIP FLEXOR TEAR].............FOLLOWING THE INJURY, HE LOOKED LIKE HE HAD NEVER KICKED BEFORE..............THIS IS EASILY A 2-8 WEEK INJURY FOR HIM............HE CERTAINLY WILL NOT BE OUT THERE SUNDAY.

LB LEONARD [ANKLE/SHOULDER]...........DEALT WITH ANKLE ISSUES WHICH HE PLAYED THROUGH LAST YEAR, BUT WHICH CAUSED HIM SUBSEEQUENT COMPENSATORY GROIN AND BACK PROBLEMS..............UNDERWENT WHAT WAS SAID TO BE A "MINOR SURGERY" ON HIS ANKLE IN JUNE AND MISSED TC...........HAS BEEN DEALING WITH SIGNIFICANT PAIN ISSUES SINCE SURGERY (NOT PROMISING FOR THAT JOINT)................THIS PAST GAME, HE SUSTAINED A SHOULDER BRUISE OF HIS BATTERING RAM............... HE MAY BE QUESTIONABLE FOR SUNDAY, BUT WILL LIKELY TRY TO CONTINUE TO PLAY THROUGH HIS INJURIES.

CB RHODES [CONCUSSION]............SUSTAINED MONDAY NIGHT...............HE WON'T CLEAR PROTOCOL.

S SENDEJO [CONCUSSION]............SUSTAINED MONDAY NIGHT...............HE WON'T CLEAR PROTOCOL.

RT SMITH [FOOT/THUMB]............HASN'T PRACTICED SINCE INJURING HIS FOOT WEEK 1.............i SUSPECT THAT HE HAS BEEN DEALING WITH A MIDFOOT SPRAIN THAT HE IS HOPING TO TREAT CONSERVATIVELY, BUT EVEN GRADE II SPRAINS ALLOW RETURN TO PLAY BY 5 WEEKS..............NOT REALLY UNDERSTANDING WHY HE HADN'T BEEN PLACED ON IR LONG TIME AGO................AS FAR AS HIS THUMB, HE HAD SURGERY ON IN IN 2019, THEN HAD ANOTHER THUMB INJURY WHICH LEFT HIS THUMB TIP TOO BRUISED AND TENDER TO PUNCH FOR A COUPLE OF GAMES...............HIS LAST THUMB INJURY WAS NOTED AFTER WEEK 2, STRANGE SINCE HE HADN'T PRACTICED AFTER WEEK 1...............HE WILL NOT PLAY SUNDAY.

DE TURAY [GROIN]................SUSTAINED ORIGINALLY JUST AFTER TC, RECURRING INTERMITTENTLY THROUGH THE SEASON WITH MISSED GAMES...............HE'S BEEN DOGGED WITH SIGNIFICANT INJURIES SINCE HIS 2018 ROOKIE YEAR............HE'S HAD 2 ANKLE SURGERIES, AN UNSUCCESSFUL ON IN 2019, AND ANOTHER ONE FEB 2021 WHICH HAD HIM MISS THE ENTIRE OFFSEASON.................HE MAY BE QUESTIONABLE, BUT WILL LIKELY PLAY SUNDAY.

CB YA-SIN [ANKLE]...............SUSTAINED A GRADE II LOW ANKLE SPRAIN WEEK 3.............MISSED WEEKS 4 AND 5........MAY BE QUESTIONABLE, BUT DOUBT HE PLAYS............IF HE DOES TRY TO PLAY, LIKELY INEFFECTIVE.

DE PAYE [HAMSTRING]..............SUSTAINED GRADE II TEAR WEEK 3.............MISSED WEEKS 4 AND 5...............HE SHOULDN'T BE PLAYING AS SOON AS SUNDAY.

COMMENTARIES ESSENTIALLY UNCHANGED FROM WEDNESDAY.

ALTHOUGH BRITT HASN'T PRACTICED THE LAST 2 DAYS, HE WILL STILL HAVE A CHANCE TO PLAY SUNDAY.

BURKHEAD IN HIS ATTEMPT TO COME BACK SUFFERS A COMPENSATORY INJURY TO HIS KNEE.

KING POPS UP WITH A HIP POINTER...............HE'S HAD INTERMITTENT CORE (ABDOMINAL AND HIP) INJURIES GOING BACK TO HIS COLLEGE DAYS..............HE WILL BE QUESTIONABLE WITH INJURY THIS CLOSE TO GAME TIME.

AMENDOLA [THIGH]................SHOULD BE GOOD TO PLAY SUNDAY............STILL INCREASED RISK FOR RE-INJURY.

BRITT [KNEE]..............STILL HAVING SWELLING AND TENDERNESS IN POST ACL KNEE............WILL LIKELY NOT BE READY FOR SUNDAY.

BROOKS [CHEST].................LUNG CONTUSION.............WILL NOT BE SAFE TO PLAY FOR ANOTHER WEEK OR TWO............POSSIBLY LONGER IF INJURY ASSOCIATED THROWING UP BLOOD OR CRACKED RIB.

CONLEY [NECK]..............STINGER...........RETURN DEPENDS ON FULL RANGE OF NECK MOTION AND RESOLUTION OF ANY SYMPTOMS (PAIN/NUMBNESS/UPPER LIMP WEAKNESS)............SINCE THIS IS APPARENTLY HIS FIRST STINGER, RETURN MAY BE AS SOON AS SUNDAY (ALTHOUGH HE MAY BE KEPT OUT FOR CAUTION............WILL HAVE TO SEE HOW HE PROGRESSES THROUGH THE WEEK.

COOKS [NOT INJURY RELATED]..........MOST LIKELY FOR REST AS I PREVIOUSLY POSTED.

JALEEL JOHNSON [BACK]...........HEARING MUSCLE SPASMS, BUT SPASMS CAN BE CAUSED BY A BULGING DISC...........MUSCLE SPASMS ALONE CAN RESOLVE WITHIN A WEEK, OR BE CHRONIC FOR SEVERAL WEEKS (IF NOT A BULGING DISC---------SEE MY COMMENTS REGARDING CANNON FOR FURTHER INFORMATION).

WATSON..................

Although, even with muscle spasms alone, I stated that Jaleel Johnson would not be able to play.................now have new information that he does indeed have a herniated disc.............expect a much longer absence, and then possible surgery if non-responsive to conservative measures.

Collins suffered a foot injury in Wednesday practice...........hopefully not a common WR Jones stress fracture.

A little more specific information on Britt's knee.............during the Pat's game, he sustained a bruising and hyperextension of his post ACL knee.

BEACHUM [RIB].........HAS BEEN DEALING WITH A RIB BRUISE FOR THE LAST FEW WEEKS AND HAVE NOT MISSED A GAME............DON'T EXPECT TO MISS THIS ONE.

DANIELS [HAMSTRING]............SUFFERED GRADE II HAMSTRING TEAR DURING LAST GAME................WILL NOT PLAY SUNDAY.

FITTS [CONCUSSION]................SUFFERED LAST WEEK................WILL NOT MAKE IT OUT OF THE PROTOCOL

HICKS [TOE/ANKLE]............HAS BEEN DEALING WITH TO ISSUE FOR SEVERAL GAMES, NOT MISSING ANY.........BUT SUFFERED A LOW ANKLE SPRAIN LAST GAME ..............WILL BE UNLIKELY TO PLAY SUNDAY.

KENNARD [SHOULDER]............SUFFERED A BRUISED SHOULDER.............WILL LIKELY BE QUESTIONABLE FOR SUNDAY.

LAWRENCE [CALF]..............SUFFERED A GRADE ii CALF TEAR LAST GAME................WON'T SEE HIM SUNDAY.

PUGH [BACK].............HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING INTERMITTENT BACK MUSCLE SPASMS FOR A COUPLE OF WEEKS, BUT MISSED NO GAMES.............THIS WEEK SHOULD BE NO DIFFERENT.

Chronicle reported today that Kirksey suffered a thumb injury against the Cards that may be a fracture. They didn't say outright, but seemed to imply he may be out the next game and Kevin Pierre-Louis would replace him.
From what I've learned, Kirksey has indeed suffured a thumb fracture. If that is the case, he will be out for more than 1 week. Any thumb fracture significantly affects grip.......something a linebacker requires to be effective. If it's a Bennet's (base of the metacarpal--boxer's fracture) fracture, even with a padded splint or cast, a 4 week return would be more realistic.

Kirksey is planning on trying to avoid necessary surgery until the end of the season. The Texans have cast his hand and will let him play that way. Does not seem to be a wise medical approach. This is not even to mention the effect it will have on his performance.........a LB without the ability for full functional grip.
