Nick Caserio - New GM

If David Culley fails (and I certainly hope he doesn't but) then NCs next decision should be to hire Demeco Ryans as his replacement which would be a very popular move here in Houston.
Haven't followed Ryans post football career, what are his credentials?

DeMeco Ryans was one of the greatest players and draft picks in Houston history. However, they didn't value his on field coaching and leadership enough to resign him as a player, doubt they do as a coach? But for the record, love me some DeMeco if it happens. Class all the way and upcoming coaching talent.

What Texans need, is a Head Coach with head coaching experience and running an entire program/operation with years of experience doing exactly that (proven track record). I have someone in mind, but do not wish him to move at this time until he proves he can win a National Championship, which is tough as hell against loaded programs like Alabama.

Houston has had incredible coaching talent run through this building. They are terrible at retaining young leaders. It's quite embarrassing, to be honest.

Another of the many things I haven't kept up with.

Mike Vrable & DeMeco Ryans who else did we miss out on?

Ben Jones, David Quessenberry, & Kendall Lamm are all on Tennessee's roster today.

I don't know how well they're playing. & I understand Quessenberry's situation. But I'm thinking we've spent a lot of money & draft capital to replace those players... & we haven't had better play at those positions since they left.

I'm hoping Caserio does a better job in this area. 3rd round picks, 6th round picks undrafted players. Find some way to retain these guys on the cheap.

  • August 29, 2021 Ian Rapoport reports that the Houston Texans are trading veteran DE Shaq Lawson to the New York Jets. According to Brian Costello, the Jets are sending a sixth-round pick in 2022 that was acquired from the 49ers in a trade for LB Jordan Willis to the Texans in exchange for Lawson.
Lol, I called that one but was rebuffed that the Jets would just wait to get a DL player off the waiver wire. NC is smarter than some on this board want to believe.

NC is doing his best to make chicken salad. He wanted to create competition and one way was trading for Lawson to compete in camp. Lawson lost to the other DEs (good thing since best player won the job not best contract).

In hindsight, maybe he talks to Aaron Rodgers to find out how he really feels about Randall Cobb prior to restructuring Lawson for 2021 cap space. But I applaud the effort to improve the team and also picking the best players over the best contract given the limited resources he has had to work with this offseason.

We knew when he turned over more than half the roster there were going to be some misses. I am hopeful that there will be more hits to count at the end of the season.

Yes, Caserio is a genius for trading for a guy, renegotiating his deal, trading the same guy, then eating $7 million in cap space over the next 2 years. All before he ever plays a real down for this team.

But hey, keep giving Nick pats on the back. For absolutely nothing.
So they traded McKinney and a 7th for two 6th's. How much money did they save off of McKinney's contract and do they really need the cap space for the next couple of yrs?

I forgot about McKinney's $1.5 million in dead money. That's $8.5 million Caserio spent for McKinney to play in Miami, Lawson to play in New York, + (2) 6th round picks - (1) 7th rounder.

What a genius.
Do they need the cap space?

Did he create competition

Did they keep players that earned the job or just keep the guy they owe the most $$$$ too?

Yep, times are changing down on Kirby. Jobs now have to be earned.

They can push unused cap space into the next year. The hope is that one day, the Texans will have good enough players to pay big $$$ contracts. Maybe you're thinking that never happens, so they'll never need cap space???

A $7M miss is not just a miss; it's a HUGE mistake.

Fair. Its bigger than say the Finley miss… We’ll see if we have any home run hits to balance it out. I’ll take rookie 6th rd Roy Lopez playing like a 7 million/year vet. Or Greenard :)

But I wouldn’t consider it a HUGE mistake. This can be corrected without need of a total rebuild. Looks like it already is in the process of being corrected with the better players winning the job we thought would go to Lawson.

A HUGE mistake to me would be basically any contract OB gave out during his tenure and/or trade he made. Which got us into the mess we’re in.

I'm thinking maybe by 2023 this becomes relative. I'm really not worried about contracts/cap space until then. Right now I would rather spend the cap space to set a culture of competition.

The Texans would have saved $6.5 million had they just cut McKinney.

What a genius.
Nick Caserio is economically illiterate and somewhat mathematically challenged.

Credit will be given when those guys actually do something meaningful.

$7M for 0 sack, 0 TFL, zero everything is as big a mistake there is.

NC could have just not trade for Lawson.
He can cut McKninney or tells him to take a salary cut (like the Dolphins did).

He could still have the other guys anyway.

Well, what happened to the Patriots' way of underpaying guys and still get the "culture of competition", "all work no play"?
Spending money is easy. Anybody can do it. No need for a genius GM, don't you think?

You know there were guys like Foster, Brisiel, even David Anderson that earned playing time over the draft picks/higher salaried players, right?

I am not gonna say that everything he has done has been good, because it hasn't. But at this point, it's better than we've had in a while and I think giving him this year as a test run is fair. Let's see how he does in 2022 with a better idea of the roster and needs.

You are both correct in a way. But to steelb’s credit Brisiel and Foster both started on the practice squad. Meaning they were cut in camp in favor to players we would learn after they were elevated that they were clearly superior to… The Texans had Chris Brown at RB throwing halfback pass ints while Foster was on the bench that season.

I think Steel is saying “hopefully” it doesn’t take nearly an entire season (or two) to figure out who the best players are at each position.

I’ll tell you how they are playing. did nothing Saturday. As I remember? q had another presnap penalty…messed something up. Do you actually think Kendall Lamm is a difference maker, lol. And our OL, still not all healthy is miles ahead of last year. Are you already missing those presnap penalties? Edit. I think jones is injured.

Hopefully our healthy OL is better than the Titans. But so far, they have not been.

& whether Kendall Lamm is a difference maker or not is not the point. We have not replaced him with a difference maker yet. Howard looked pretty good, up until he got hurt, so we don't know yet if he's an upgrade or not.

We're spending more money & draft picks & are barely getting replacement level.
