What is Watson's value in a trade?

Do the Texans want Watson to show up for training camp?
If I were the Texans I would. He's going to need the money so I would think he shows up. Then they can see how he acts. If he's going to be Jalen Ramsey with obscure injuries, or will he be like Hopkins, a good soldier for one more year?

Even with the situatuion DW4 finds himself in is it still possible that he finds himself of some value in a trade? Could a trade be made on draft day? Could it be possible DW4 decides to pay off the plantiffs when push comes to shove?

Could DW4 be traded on or before this years NFL Draft ? The answer is, absolutely ! Is he likely to be traded ? The chances of DW4 being traded on or before this years Draft are extremely remote, or extremely unlikely. But he could still be traded, so far as I know it's not against the law.
To me the bigger question about the chances of Watson being traded before this Draft are: how little would the Texans ownership be willing to take for him to ship him out of town and be done with him once and for all ? If the McNairs are willing to let DW4 go on the cheap, then I guarantee you there's one or more bidders out there.

That's the thing they shouldn't let him go for cheap. Enough of getting the bottom end of the sticks. We didn't get equal value for Hopkins or Clowney. And we didn't get squat for Watt. So if I'm Nick, I will not trade Watson for just peanuts. I would hold onto him this year and trade him next year once the smoke clears up a bit. You will have your own first pick in 22, and then you can get a great return for Watson.

There’s a real chance Hardin might just get this settlement done before the draft cause Watson ultimately wants out and paying off these women gets him out of town.
That might have been the plan all along.

This stuff will drape out way past the draft. I see if this was just one but it's 23 cases. No way Hardin will be able to get this done in less than a week. Better yet 4 days.

I understand the argument about avoiding paying a quarterback at the end of their rookie deal as Watson has really left a bad taste in everyone's mouth.

Getting QB in 2022 and then wisely (snicker--sorry) building trenches and corners and pass rush could allow Houston to rotate/ prepare QB without wrecking cap. Tunsil's contract will be bad in 2022 but we should be able to move Cobb, Cooks, Roby etc.

A super star QB hasn't got us where we should be so build an Alabama type team and go with a QB that doesn't blow up the salary cap. Yeah we are going to have to do better in the draft than we have historically but isn't that when we got Caserio?

I'm not for a moment suggesting that they should unload him on the cheap, but they may be so sick and tired of this drama with DW4

.. and then?
According to John McClain, the Texans had planned to grant QB Deshaun Watson‘s trade request this very week in order to secure a heavy draft load of picks and players. Unfortunately, his legal issues got in the way and no team is likely to take him on not knowing if he will even be available to play next season with the NFL conducting their own investigation.

McClain says eight teams had shown interest in putting together a trade package for Watson and Texans GM Nick Caserio planned to hold an auction for a massive haul of picks that would jump-start their rebuilding process.
The list included the Jets, Dolphins, Panthers, Broncos, 49ers, Patriots, Bears and Washington, per McClain.....

"at least three first-round picks, two second-round picks and a defensive starter."

Damn, that haul would have been a nice start to a rebuild.

The O'Brien/Watson era will ultimately be judged by the negative impact on this franchise and city. Fans will probably curse both names for many years to come for the damage they've caused.

I've already started with phrases such as "Don't O'Brien your company" to a friend about his career, and "Don't be a Watson" to his college-bound son with regards to the dating scene. He knew what I meant without explaining any of it. Such is the mentality of Texans fans these days.

My prediction (GUESS): Using history as a guide, this gets settled out of court. Because DW4 tried to make a mockery of the NFL and turn it into the NBA the NFL will exact their revenge and send a message. The NFL will suspend DW4 for 1 year without pay for violation of the league's personal conduct policy. This along with the message that one, if he keeps his nose clean he will be eligible to return to the NFL after the suspension is over. And two, the Texans will trade him to another team after his suspension which he will accept. If he fails to meet those two requirements he will never play football in the NFL again.
Nice speculation if for no other reason we'll at least get something for him. And that is the only thing I'm concerned about at this point. He'll never play another down for the Texans.

I'm told Caserio's plan remains the same as it has been. They will wait to trade Watson for much more coveted 2022 and future picks over 2021 picks from a draft most see as poor and sorely lacking in depth. This is the smartest thing they can do to recover from a really bad situation. Carolina is still waiting in the wings, and they won't be alone in this. Patience is the word for 2021.

I'm of the opinion that waiting until 2022 may actually turnout better for the Texans. Thanks for the info.

God knows I AM! Guy actually had the audacity of signing a blockbuster deal.. Turn around a few months later, renege on the deal, and demand a trade.. While he was simultaneously crashing his own trade value, because he couldn't keep his dick in his pants..

I'm beyond ready to turn the page, what a disappointment.

Without the massage fiasco, the Texans could have traded Watson for high picks in 2021, 2022, & 2023. There's no way this will turn out "better". If Caserio can turn this into chicken salad, that would be great. I'm thinking there will be a lot of disappointment among Texan fans when a deal finally occurs (this time next year?). But, that's the hand that's been dealt.

Caserio's strategy was to always keep Watson........that's why we kept hearing "He's a Houston Texan"........and that's why the Texans were not answering teams' calls. The ones propagating "The Texans are looking to [/ going to] trade Watson" have been sources such as McClain and Florio.
According to reports as of late. It seems Nick was going to trade him right before or on draft night. I'm not sure if that's actually what he planned. However, more articles have come up lately that say things like:

"Houston Texans GM Nick Caserio planned to deal Watson before the draft"
OR
(This is no longer saying Watson is the QB) "We are going to look at everything and do what benefits the Houston Texans most."

I don't know if that was 100% his plan. But, I do think it would have been smart to wait till other teams have positioned themselves. And then see who has the best possible package of picks and players. I agree that in the beginning Nick and staff might have been trying to keep him. Perhaps even ordered to keep him. However, after that meeting with Culley, his body language and his words began to change. Keep in mind that Watson only met with Culley on a respect stance.

He still should get 2 1st round picks (2022 and 2023 likely), a 2nd or 2 and a 3rd. Plus a potential player or two. This would give us 2 1st round picks in back to back drafts. As well as the ability to trade one in each year for more picks in the 1st and 2nd. I'd love to see a draft like this

1-10
1-25
2-10
2-14
2-17
3-10
3-19
4th
4th
5th
6th
6th
6th
7th
7th
Than this
3rd
4th
5th
6th
7th
Which is close to what we have this year

DW4's ability to play QB has not diminished. There will be enough desperate teams in 2022 in need of QB to do desperate things. There always is. The Texans will be picking in the Top 5, if not #1 which only strengthens their hand. There will be an auction for DW4 services and my original 6000 trade points may be back in play. SUCK FOR HOWELL.

Thanks Doc! Great info from your insider position. I am interested in how this roster will do in the 2021 season. I'm not very optimistic; hopefully I am wrong. 2022 should be a much better draft. I am looking at you Philadelphia.

Oh I know. I just have a feeling that nobody was sure how the meeting would go. Once he said he was not going to play even for Culley plans altered. Nick Caserio is not stupid and would have told everyone that he feels Watson should be traded. While they may not have liked the idea knew he was right. The question is was a plan in place for it or was a plan being worked on and then the criminal stuff happened and shut it down for the time being. We have a guy that works for the Texans come into work alot. He gets asked 20 questions every time even if everything is going good. He didn't say Watson was going to be traded but he did say that "the mood changed about Watson after he met with Culley". What that means is unknown seeing he will not get into details.

🤣 I don't think Philly is going to be the only team that is interested. Some other teams who are likely to snag a QB in the draft are still not out of the question. After all, look at past situations and you will see 2 good QBs is a problem many teams love. Montana and Young is a great one. Even if most teams don't have 2 Pro Bowl talent QBs. They may have 1 and another very good QB or even 2 that are just below Pro Bowl level. They are the teams that will move the QB who is not as good a fit for a hefty pick/player deal. A QB like Tua (the jury is still out) and maybe Miami still gets an early QB. Then after TC and pre season they ride the best option. And due to the low cost deals on both being rookie contracts. They wait till they see who needs a QB. Then they offer a great deal to a team/s for picks or players the following off season.

All we know for now is IF a good QB is sitting at 67...the Texans could make a move. And then next season (Watson is going to be here) and they see if they can fix the problems with him. If not, they have a good young QB they like...they move Watson to the highest bidder. We shall see what happens after the legal stuff and what the NFL does. I have seen anywhere from 4-6 game suspension (if guilty) to a full season and even a few banned from the NFL for "X" amount of time let's use 2yrs just to have a number.

I’ve been really impressed with NC. He knows his job. He came in and WHAM, roster was retooled, cap space was cleaned up, contracts got restructured and I don’t think, for the first time in a while, that anyone feels comfortable about their job. People don’t seem to like the NE connection but I’m starting to see the same cold efficiency.

Excellent post. Yes, Nick Caserio is killing it right now. And redoing deals and cleaning up cap space is something nobody was feeling could be done. I don’t think he is really even started yet. That will be the draft, UDFA and roster cut FA signings. And just wait until next year when he has a full allotment of picks. You are also correct that he is basically making it so you have to bust your butt to play and not be cut. If player A is good and a starter currently don't be surprised if player B out works him and takes his job. Should be a great TC and pre season with more plot twists than we have ever seen.

??? because of this DW mess and draft situation its seems Little can be done this year. I believe one of your concerns is these FA contracts? But I see it as exactly and ingeniously what has to be done in this seemingly wasted year. We aren’t going to the playoffs. IMO this is the year to set the forms in the place to pour the foundation. NC has shaken this team to its core and finally there is a point source for the new direction. How many new GM’s come in, state above all a need for competitiveness and to stress their point pull roster moves at this level? Anything less would just be typical lip service that wouldn’t get his point across. This is a big, positive move in a year when not much else can be done Other than getting our new O and D styles established. And even if a lot of these contracts aren’t around after final cutdown he’s made his point and the players will definitely know what they better do to play on this team.

Cleaned up cap space

Signing players to small, short deals (prove it type) to get competitive in TC. And who knows maybe 1/4th or more contribute to more than STs.

Signing FAs that can and will be playing come opening day unless a rookie beats them out. Look at Foster for proof it happens or Brady. A small list

Cannon
Lindsey
Lawson
King
Taylor
Ingram

That 6 alone will be on the field on opening day. Are they all going to start... probably not. Ingram, Johnson and Lindsey likely to ALL play. A 3 headed monster if you have DJ catch as much as run. If he is still going like he was at the end of last year... could surprise. King is going to be at the least a nickle and dime packages guy. Cannon will start and is dang good. Taylor is not the same as he was when younger but he is not going to give a game away. May not have as many TDs but he is not a high INT guy. And is a 63% career pass completion percentage guy. True not amazing but realistically it's not at all a bad %. Plus, he can buy time with his legs and has a high IQ.

Was it mentioned that Nick also got us cap room while doing this? That's the marking of a good GM. The draft, UDFAs and rost cut signing will be good. I'm not going to be too hard on him as far as the draft this year. Afterall...he was left with nothing but a train wreck. He still can get 1-2 very good players who might start and 3-4 who contribute. Later picks we will have to see. To me, after the 4th it's a crap shoot on how well the players are. Some are great and just didn't get scouted high due to a smaller school or a bad team. Others had off years and didn't put it all together... but do in the NFL with a good staff. Oh yes, the staff. We have a very good and respected QB coach. Same with OL and DC. Our OL coach is one of the best around. Lovie Smith is a very good DC and not a bad HC in his own right either.

Oh where to start. Being a busy body does not mean one knows his job, it could also be an exercise in futility. It could be he is just doing his job badly or worse than most. History alone suggest that being a Belichick clerk is a recipe for failure, there have been so many. Only a few weeks ago Bob Kraft was throwing Caserio under the bus for 5 years of bad drafting. We also learned that the Patriot Way without Tom Brady is kind of average and ordinary at best.

First thing out of the gate, Caserio said no college coaches would not be part of the hiring process. That is tunnel vision and limits scope and field for good coaches. Caserio's idea and answer was to hire a 65 yr old journeyman coach who has never been a HC or a coordinator. Culley's previous gig was QB coach and passing game coordinator who presided over the worst passing game in the NFL. And Culley was only hired with the intentions of being here a year or two. Who does that?

In answer to you your "laying the foundation" it is already a given that Culley will only be here a year or two at most. That means a new HC and new coordinators. So much for that foundation, not much of a foundation in my book, it's missing the rebar. A foundation crack is inevitable and a set back. Another start over in 2022 or 2023 is inevitable. Your newly established D and O is already kaput, it's already a start over and a set back.

All the commotion and activity by Caserio early on has been the equivalent of rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Releasing JJ and trading Cooks is how you clean up the salary cap to the tune of $27MM worth. Getting a 2nd RD for Cooks is how you build draft capital. Cooks is a FA after 2022. Better to trade a year early than a year late. That's Basic GM 101. Caserio restructured his contract but Cooks is still FA after 2022 and Texans dead money in 2023. SMDH.

Restructuring (5) contracts that borrows $30MM from 2022 and 2023 salary caps IS NOT getting your salary cap in order. IT IS BEING FISCALLY IRRESPONSIBLE, that is what IT IS! Restructuring 1 or 2 contracts may make some sense for a playoff team but NOT for a team REBUILDING. CERTAINLY NOT 5. Shows a strong lack of common sense, logical thinking and a basic lack of understanding of economics and finance. This may have be Nick's most egregious FUBARS in his short time as the Titanic's deck manager. It also brings into question Nick's long term vision.

Trading away a 4th RD pick for an over the hill OL with a $7MM cap hit who was GOING TO GET CUT anyways and a FA in 2 years is an EXERCISE IN STUPIDITY. Trading valuable draft capital in a REBUILDING year where you have NO 1st or 2nd RD draft picks for a backup QB who was GOING TO BE CUT anyways only compounds that stupidity. So you say the Texans would not have been able to sign them if they didn't trade for them. One thing we agree on, IT"S A REBUILDING YEAR so not signing an over the hill OL and backup QB, IT DOESN'T MATTER, IT'S A REBUILDING YEAR. It was only an exercise of WASTING salary cap space and draft capital. It doesn't appear as though Nick has a four year plan.

THE PURPOSE OF REBUILDING IS NOT TO TRY AND WIN ENOUGH GAMES TO BE OUT OF THE TOP 10 in the draft. THE PURPOSE OF REBUIDING IS TO SUCK FOR HOWELL. ANY QUESTIONS SEE THE JAGS AND JETS. HERE IS A GIVEN, EVERYBODY IN THE FOOTBALL UNIVERSE EXPECTS THE TEXANS TO GO 0 AND 17. DON'T DISAPPOINT THEM!

Please notice that my critique of Nick Caserio had absolutely nothing to do DW4. That's a discussion for another day. Next time Caserio offers up some Kool Aid, it would be best to abstain, don't drink it. It makes you think he is a genius and ready for the Hall of Fame. :)

Nick Caserio is behaving exactly in a way I would expect a Bill Belichick clerk to behave.

Playing a season to tank is shows disrespect for every player and coach on the team and every fan in the stadium and is no way to instill competition and a badly needed new image for this organization. It’s just incomprehensible.
