Texans random thought of the day

Gtfoh , I was not trying to be the first to post it. Papal said he heard about the extension, so I pulled it up copy and pasted. Once I did that dude had already posted the news from Twitter.

Stop assuming stuff. You got that s bad.

Okay, my apologies, I wasn't expecting you to take it so hard. I should have known better

Some thoughts on various posts without quoting all:
1. I was surprised Mercilus did not test free agency as I think he could have gotten closed to $15-16 m avg. My spin is O'Brien does not like what could be available at our pick in round two and yes we do have a second and should have at least one comp third & no one knows if we gave one of our 3rds or a comp for Conley. This move allows us to eliminate edge/OLB from round two and if our corners continue may eliminate that from round two consideration.
Focus is on $ and sacks but I point out Mercilus has 15 QB hits + 2 passes defended + 2 INTs (88 yards!) + 2 TDs + 4 forced fumbles and should end with about 55 tackles. On the contract I don't look at avg per annum but GTD avg is $12.25 m which is not so bad as he can be cut at 30.5 YOA end of our season for 2021. Let's see what he does with Watt on field in 2020.

2. re-sign Roby? Why? His 34 tackles is 80th NFL; INTs are 2 but 21st NFL; allowed 37 of 60 target; overall less than 67% :cheese: and one sack. Get out of the way and let our young guys play!

3. Martin I did not like new contract but he has allowed only 4 penalties for 25 yards and two sacks on 1000 snaps. Supposedly Watson likes him.

I see it as keeping him around for a couple of years while they are low on draft capital.
They have a reasonable talent base to work FA and draft acquisitions from, they won’t likely be looking to draft or sign where they have no starter.
Merci has disappointed this season for me. A mediocre performance in a contract year when he had the opportunity to be the featured pass rusher. I still don’t hate this signing because it’s important to keep hold of what you’ve got and free up the limited draft picks for BPA.

Please explain how cap hell is coming?
Dont see how those two were worth those contracts. Overpaid. Seems OB gonna overpay guys he likes. Watson will get huge money of course and tunsil will be top paid offensive lineman. Throw in a watt deal. Now we got a bunch on guys on expiring contracts to think about.

Yeah, money been thrown around on JAGS. Eventually the guys worthy of big deals will get theirs.

Mercilus got a below market deal. Look at the deals ZaDarius Smith/Preston Smith got in FA as a guide. Anger got a mid level contract for a punter, which was fair. IMHO

New contract for Watt? He may not even make it through this contract.

Add it to the long list of failures by OB and his staff.

its crazy dude - really embarrassing is the word. every year that we have a boatload of cap money and we get all pumped up to be players in free agency and every year during the OBrien Era this team has failed to entice top level free agents to sign up I wonder why. Instead, they have to mortgage the future in giving up draft after draft so that they can poach the talent other organizations have been able to identify and nurture.

This is a systemic problem way beyond talent levels and expectations. This is just a shitty thing to do to one of your better ex players, but I guess nobody should be surprised granted the way they treated Andre Johnson, Brandon Brooks, Duane Brown, AJ Boye, KJAX, JD, etc... etc... these jokers THINK they know how a winning team should be run, but our head coach has never been a champion at any level in his playing or coaching career .. you cant TEACH someone how to be a winner.

SMH.

I know you won't see it, but this is a lot like (not exactly) wishing your starting QB breaks a leg.
maybe....
but you didn't say he was wrong.
:)
and how do you think those negotiations will end up without an experienced GM in place??
I could see the Texans having to pay top dollar to retain them

Just a reminder what POS owners and coaches we have:

To be fair, you have to pick & choose which players can be on the sidelines pre-game. I mean should guys like Jaelen Strong or Eddie Pleasant also get sideline access for him and their family?

I don't know how many former players are constantly asking for sideline access, but it could get to a point where you have to start saying "no".

How many ex-players are asking to be on the sidelines every game? And to be fair, I'd take a Chris Myers over Eddie Pleasant and Jaelen Strong 8 days a week.

Dude was trying to get this done months in advance. Just more bad PR for this craptastic front office.

If the Texans lose Saturday a large part of that will be because Allen will have played better than DW4.

I can already see cracks developing in the DW4/BOB relationship.

Thanks RS

LOL OK. Wake me up when Strong or Pleasant PUT TOGETHER had a combined career like Chris Meyers. 2 time Pro Bowler/1X All Pro for these Texans and he gets treated like this?

Im starting to wonder how much of this has to do with "Koobs Guys" ... I bet if Strong asked to be on the sideline Bill OBrien would appease him since that was "his guy".

It obviously affected Myers a certain way for him to go on record like this. I empathize with him - sucks to give your all for a company and then instantly be forgotten when you no longer can help the team.

SteelB I'm amazed by the powers of pereption of your crystal ball. OK so I have a question for your CB ?
It the Texans win Saturday that will be in large part because ?

Because the defense plays well.

The offense runs the ball 25 or more times. They score TD's in the RZ and most importantly they don't turn the ball over.

The way Taiwan Jones played against Tenn may have earned him a spot in the next game and beyond.
He was good outside the tackles.
Yea he looked good the other day.
So anyway Raiders 4th round pick in 2011, and is now 31 years old.
Like I always say - running backs are a dime a dozen.

Is it comforting or alarming to realize there are (and will be more) so many coach openings around the league and no one has mentioned a single Texans coach / assistant?

I wasn't expecting a Texans coach to be considered...

OC -largely inexperienced too young guy who does not call plays
DC- a failed HC who all but retired a couple of years back (moved to less hands-on position)

Or after 6 years, only ONE head coach came from the BOB tree.

Even thinking further... has anyone left the BOB coaching staff for a promotion besides Vrabel?

Although the Texans have brought down their sack number from 62 last year to 44 this year, it is still the 4th worst in the League.

According to Pro Football Focus, the Texans’ offensive line has a few players who are overall terrible. Right tackle Clark grades at 46.0. Right guard Fulton at 50.9. Those are both in or near PFF’s lowest grade category of “poor.” Left guard Scharping at 56.4, considered a “below average” grade as well. Only Tunsil has had a productive season per PFF, as he ranks as 15th overall best tackle in the NFL.

I'm a glass half full guy - I like the fact they improved over 20%.
Here's hoping they can improve that much again next season.

I am not a big fan but he did look good. Supposed to be great on special teams but did not seem so special until the last few games.
