Texans Training Camp 2015

I know. That's why I thought is was a little goofy. The players are going to get the logo anyway, so why make them "earn" them for two weeks?

Eh, maybe it saves them a few bucks not having to replace them come game time. lol

Hey guys, where's MY logo? Could you send one to my new home address?

Signed,
Will Yeatman

Really hoping Nix comes around. If he can show his Notre Dame form we'll have a fairly formidable group of DT's and defensive line as a whole.

I know we are eternal optimists on the 53rd guy being an All-Pro, but especially on defense it seems like we have bubble guys that are legitimately starters/rotational guys on other teams. That is a pretty decent feeling.

Louis Nix, III "I'm trying to get better and stay off the injured list"

Garrett Graham, Kenny Hilliard, and Louis Nix III with his first positive mentions as a Texan are today's winners. Honorable mention to John Simon and Chris Polk.

I was going to ask was they were putting Nix3 but it makes sense now; Louis Nix III. Duh. As I was...

On the training camp unis, I would guess it's more related towards team building. Much ado about nothing IMO.

Literally. The players' jerseys had only numbers on them - no names. Their blue helmets also were bereft of the Texans' bull logo. It looked strange. O'Brien, however, suggested afterward not to "read too much" into any of that.

Talking about it on radio now. Says take with grain of Salt. Stevie Brown, X, Clowney (of course) haven't gotten any reps with first team. Nate Washington has been mostly a first team guy...

Just FYI (not that it makes any difference at this point), the Texans have never listed PUP players of any type in their Depth Charts.

The depth chart I see has Hoyer starting and no mention of Foster at all
http://www.houstontexans.com/team/depth-chart.html

Jeff Adams is going to be one busy man when the 2nd team comes in.

They've made changes since it was first put up when I posted.

Seems like they are still tweaking.

Only reason I looked is because I'm listening to Texans all access and drew dougherty said that the depth charts had just went live.....

Toughest cuts will be at WR. There are some folks in there that will be cut that can play and play well if given the chance. There are really at most two spots up for grabs. It's safe to say the top 4 who are completely safe are Nuke, Washington, Shorts and Strong. I'd say due to ST's, Bonner, Worthy, and Mumphrey have inside tracks to the 5th and/or 6th spots. I think the KMart show is about over. He's a cut imo.

This is the depth chart they are talking about, and it agrees with that in a HT.com article by Drew Dougherty earlier today.

Highlights include Hoyer or Mallet at starting QB, X at starting LG, no Clowney at all, and no rookies on the first or second team (other than Special Teams) and Kevin Johnson listed as the 4th team CB. Take it for what it's worth.

26 observations: #TexansCamp on Tuesday
John Harris|Texans Analyst

Tuesday morning was the first practice here back in Houston since the team got back from Richmond, VA. There were no fights, perhaps unfortunately, perhaps fortunately, to add to the Hard Knocks repository but the team got in a solid day’s work under the glare of the 95 degree sun. Let’s get some observations from the day’s work.

1. Ryan Mallett spent the day with the first unit, which follows the alternating schedule the...

Houston Texans: Day 8 Training Camp Recap
Unknown.jpeg

Patrick StarrOwner/Editor

The Houston Texans returned home to the Methodist Training Center to prepare for their first preseason game.

  • The Houston Texans had a practice much more geared to situational football getting ready for San Francisco on Saturday to open up the preseason. The Texans offense worked on moving the ball up and down the field deep in their own territory. Add in some situational special teams work, the Texans are treating this week like they do for games.
  • The big day belonged to Garrett Graham who had his best day since training camp opened. Graham worked well with Ryan Mallett in team sessions and caught a tough pass with good coverage from Andre Hal to score the first touchdown of the day. He bailed out Mallett when he threw into double coveage coming back to the ball and catching the ball over a defender then broke into open field towards the endzone before the whistle was blown. Mallett also hit Graham on a corner route in stride in the back of the endzone to cap off an impressive day receiving the ball. Graham still has work to do blocking but his day was a big for a tight end who has been quiet all camp.
  • Nate Washington and Mallett are working well together once again. At one portion of practice Mallett and Washington were looking like the only two on the field during a team session. Mallett hit Washington on three consecutive passes capped off with Washington jumping up over a defender in a jump ball situation. Washington is fitting in well with the offense and is cementing his spot as a starter in the lineup.
  • Mallett no doubt strung together some solid stretches during practice. Working well with Cecil Shorts III, Washington and Graham; Mallett moved the ball efficiently compared to the other quarterbacks today. The biggest issue for Mallett is when he wants to force the ball into double or triple coverage. He continues to make this mistake more times than not which is leading to near interceptions on the field. Mallett's best throw was to Washington coming out of the endzone in stride running a corner route over two trailing defenders. Mallett appears to be working on his touch more and more as camp progresses.
  • It was a down day for Brian Hoyer during practice. His struggles all practice was missing easy throws and in once case he made a great play fake to get the defense moving then threw a pass no where near a wide open Keith Mumphery in the flats. Hoyer had issues with passes outside the numbers leading to errant throws and defenders getting their hands on the football. Hoyer will be up tomroow to work with the first team offense which will help him some to try and get back on track.
  • Louis Nix returned to the field after a minor health issue and he responded with his best day of camp. Being the true nose-tackle he is, he plugged running lanes and created piles for linebackers to roam and make plays. He still has to work playing lower because he gets too high at times but that will come with more work practice reps. He is ramping up for plenty of work this Saturday in the preseason opener.
  • Chris Polk returned to the field and he came out with a purpose today. Running the ball well through the tackles, Polk's big play came on a run when he cut back outside the defense to only greet cornerback Charles James with a stiff arm in full stride for some extra yards. Polk has some catching up to do and his reps on the field were increased with the absence of Jonathan Grimes.
  • One rookie who continues to put things together is Benardrick McKinney. His physcial nature is not to be over looked and he and Kenny Hilliard have had some early collisions on the field. McKinney has continued ot build on a solid start during training camp.
  • Hilliard continues to thrive with the more reps for him with Arian Foster out with his injury. The rookie running back is a throw back and does not take it lightly on defenders trying to square him up for tackles. Hilliard has continued to show he can break the first tackle consisitently and get into the line of scrimmage to scratch out more yards. There will be plenty of Hilliard over the preseason and his running style is fitting into what Bill O'Brien wants for a first and second down back in his offense.
  • Outside linebacker John Simon was not making too many friends on the field today. First he cleaned up Polk on a route out of the back field then showed some pass rush abiltiy beating Duane Brown to get to Mallett during teams drills. He has been the model of consistency for the defense and he is going to have an increased time on the defense and he is putting in some solid work to stick in the outside linebacker rotation.
  • One things we always take time out to watch is Derek Newton and J.J. Watt lock up during practice. Newton holds his own but Watt always ends up coming up with a pass deflection or a sack. Watt beat Newton around the corner then tagged Mallett on the arm prior to his throw to let him know he was there. Newton has evolved as pass blocker and showed in pass protection he can play fundametally and still hold up against Watt. Both are making each better and that is going to carry over to the season.
  • Rookie outside linebacker Carlos Thompson continues to make some noise during camp. He continues to show flashes of understanding the game and today he did it in a pass rush where he moved the offensive tackle with ease with his intial hand game to start his pass rush.
  • Wide Receiver Alan Bonner gutted it out today during practice after it was noticable something was bohtering him the entire practice. He still produced catches on the field but he can not afford to miss anytime especially with his injury history.
  • Rookie cornerback Kevin Johnson spoke to the media after practice after another good day of camp. He had a nice intercpetion in one on one drills driving on a route in coverage under cutting a hitch route.

From The Chronicle:

Texans’ Louis Nix returns to practice, looks to contribute in second NFL season
Posted on August 11, 2015 | By Aaron Wilson

2015 Texans training camp: Aug. 11

Louis Nix spent his entire rookie season watching as a bystander instead of playing football while healing up on injured reserve from a wrist injury. Nix had other health problems, including a knee injury that limited him during his final season at Notre Dame.

Since joining the Texans as a third-round draft pick last year, Nix has faced scrutiny about his commitment to the game, his tendency to get hurt and his toughness. All of which has frustrated the coaching staff.

Nix took up residency inside Texans coach Bill O’Brien’s doghouse, and the 6-foot-2, 331-pound Florida native is trying to claw his way out of there.

Now, Nix is hoping to change the conversation surrounding him and contribute following a first NFL season where he was unable to play at all. In order to do that, though, Nix needs to stack productive practices together and remain healthy after returning to practice Tuesday after missing all of the Texans’ practices last week against the Redskins in Richmond, Va.

“I’ve been trying to get back out here and do the best I can and show coach [Bill O’Brien] I can do some things,” said Nix, who’s entering the second year of a four-year, $2.85 million contract that includes a $575,272 signing bonus. “I’ve been wanting to get back in pads. I wanted to be there for the Redskins and just get back out there with my teammates. I have no expectations yet. I’ve got to make the team for one, so I just come out here and just do the best I can.”

Nix declined to specify what type of injury he was dealing with recently, reciting the oft-repeated company line instructing reporters to ask O’Brien about their health issues.

It’s O’Brien whom Nix needs to impress to emerge as a contributor in his second NFL season.

“At the end of the day, the expectations are the same whether you’re a draft pick or an undrafted free agent,” Nix said. “Regardless of that, I’m going to do the best I can. You hear it a lot. Coach O’Brien wants you to come out here and work and that’s what I’m trying to do, you know, just be the best I can.”

Drafted 83rd overall, Nix is projected as a backup after the Texans signed veteran former New England Patriots nose tackle Vince Wilfork to a two-year, $9 million contract.

“He is a guy that knows a lot about the 3-4 defense,” Nix said of Wilfork. “Obviously he’s been one of the best players at his position for a long time. It’s great to have a guy like that because you can try your best to take in all the little things that he learned over the years and just put it in your game and that’s what I’m trying to do.”

“I grew up watching him. I was a Miami Hurricane fan. I went to Notre Dame, but you know, I still watched a lot and he’s always been a big guy. I just look up to him and I just try to do my best.”

Nix is still massive, but appears to be leaner than his rookie season.

“Am I lighter?” Nix said playfully. “I don’t know. I didn’t check the scale today.”

A former blue-chip recruit from Jacksonville, Fla., who chose Notre Dame over Miami, Florida State and Florida, Nix had 50 tackles, 7 ½ for losses and two sacks in 2012 before his senior year was cut short in 2013 due to a torn meniscus in his knee that required arthroscopic surgery. Nix ran the 40-yard dash in 5.42 seconds at the NFL scouting combine and only had a 25 ½ inch vertical leap and an 8-1 broad jump.

Nix plays a position where strength, bulk and leverage are the watchwords, not speed. Still, Nix’s power could provide value in the Texans’ defensive line rotation if he can ever stay healthy.

“I’m trying to do my best to stay on the field,” Nix said. You know, stay off the injury list. I’m just trying to get out here and do the best I can. It’s hot, guys are competing, you got guys that are the best at their position right now and you’ve just got to take that all in and you’ve just got to do the best you can and just come out here and show that you can hang with them.”

Damaris Johnson dominates in 1 v 1 drills, too quick to handle in space. Just had a hard time transitioning that talent to games. #Texans

#Texans Covington told me rule #1 for a rookie is shut your mouth until spoken to.

#Texans O'Brien singled out Christian Covington again as an impressive rookie. He made another big play in team drills. #Rice

#Texans O'Brien: in order to gain respect in the #NFL we have to win. We have to win.

#Texans O'Brien it's the players that WE want here. It's not just me. It's an organization.

#Texans TE blocking not a strength. They're working on it.

#Texans rookie Lynden Trail gets extra attention from Capt. Intensity, Mike Vrabel.

Big moment for #Texans camp. Cushing looks MUCH better in coverage drills this year. Teams attacked that in '14.

Zip line overhead camera for #HardKnocks Pretty cool for #Texans

#Texans Def line split in 2 groups. Ends and interior. More reps for each player. Another heavy work day.

Everytime I read these, it sounds like Mallett is doing better than Hoyer, but then they say, Hoyer still in the lead...like wtf are they that hard for Hoyer starting? (local press)

You can't really judge this QB battle from Twitter posts. Most of these people don't know what to look for. During OTAs and minicamp where Mal was obviously struggling, you didn't really see that posted. Most people don't want to post negatives. Mallett has come back from a poor early start. Both display weaknesses.

For instance, everything I've been able to infer leads to me to believe that FB Jay Prosch was not showing any improvement and likely to lose his spot...

OB just singled out Prosch as having a good training camp, one of the most improved.
