Texans Training Camp 2015

You and Cak apparently thought he'd stop the alternating thing after naming a starter for this preseason game. I never expected that. Maybe I'm the only one who didn't, but there you go. It's just a continuation of the routine so far.

I think that is the situation. What gave me pause was I don't remember anything being said about alternating last week and figured the question was raised today because it was different. If it was alternated last week no biggie. I wouldn't have alternated either week - would have had the guys practice all week with the unit they would play with.

Development of Hopkins is one reason why the Texans were comfortable moving on from Andre Johnson, the top player in franchise history

Bill O'Brien on DeAndre Hopkins: 'He stuck with it. He worked his ass off to be a great player. This guy can be a force in this league.'
Jaelen Strong caught a touchdown pass in the preseason opener, but the team expects more from him.

Bill O'Brien: 'Strong's not getting it done. You're headed down a road that's not good.

Texans O-lineman Adams aims to add versatility to repertoire
By Aaron Wilson
August 18, 2015 Updated: August 18, 2015 11:28pm

The conversations held by the Texans' offensive line tend to run the gamut, touching on everything from current events and politics to food, music, movies and, of course, blocking schemes.

If anyone's ever stumped on an outside-the-box, intellectual topic, they have an Ivy Leaguer to rely upon for answers. Jeff Adams is a soft-spoken Columbia graduate whose versatility as a swing tackle also capable of filling in at left guard has increased his value to the offensive line.

"Jeff's a real smart guy, obviously, coming out of Columbia, and if a real interesting question comes up outside of football, we'll say, 'Columbia, what do you think?' " right guard Brandon Brooks said. "He has that blue-collar attitude where he doesn't say much, but he gets the job done. He's very intelligent."

As the Texans attempt to upgrade their depth and positional flexibility, Adams has emerged as an answer to several questions and become a key piece of the offensive line while left guard Xavier Su'a-Filo deals with a soft-tissue injury in his foot and ankle that has sidelined him for two weeks.

Beyond what Adams has accomplished by being knowledgeable and skilled enough to line up at left tackle, right tackle or guard, the Texans are trying to build that type of skill set throughout the line to make themselves less vulnerable should they lose one of their five starters to a long-term injury.

That ambition was on display during the Texans' 23-10 victory over the 49ers, albeit with mixed results. The highlights included zero sacks allowed and 146 rushing yards on 45 carries. However, the goal-line offense was a major disappointment as the Texans were stuffed seven times on one drive before turning the ball over on downs at the 1-yard line.

Eye on bigger picture

What the Texans are attempting to do is focus on the bigger picture of evaluating players at different positions to try to improve the line as a whole.

"We have to continue to develop that second-team and third-team offensive line," coach Bill O'Brien said. "Versatility is key. Tackles that can play guard, guards that can play center, vice versa, tackles that can play some tight end … that's one of our philosophies is those guys being as diverse as they can in their skill set."

The line configurations included having right tackle Derek Newton flip to left tackle when Pro Bowler Duane Brown was given the night off after the first series. The Texans had center Ben Jones play left guard while backup James Ferentz filled in at center.

Adams started at left guard but also played right tackle. The 6-7, 305-pounder looked more comfortable at tackle than playing inside at guard, where he's learning on the job.

"Versatility is big for anybody," Adams said. "As a player, the more versatility you have, the more valuable you are to the game, and it gives you experience, too. The more positions you can play, the better you can understand the offense and the faster you can play."

After previous stints with the Cincinnati Bengals, Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans' practice squads and a training camp with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted rookie, Adams has gradually become someone the Texans are counting on as an important contributor after appearing in two games last season.

"He's done well, he's come in here, and he's a smart guy. He's a great teammate. He stayed here all offseason and worked hard," said O'Brien, a fellow Ivy Leaguer from Brown. "He really worked on the things we asked him to work on. He comes out here, and he gives great effort every day."

Not afraid to go low

What Adams has to constantly focus on is lowering his pad level. As a taller offensive lineman, he has a natural tendency to play too high and has to fight against that to create leverage.

"You've got longer arms, and that helps playing against shorter guys," Adams said. "The opposite of that is I'm a taller guy, so I have to play low. It just means you have to bend your knees more.

"I'm working on that every single day: playing low and getting my hands on them fast."

A sociology major who grew up in Berwyn, Ill., Adams played football and basketball in high school and was an academic all-state selection. He downplayed any talk of having superior intelligence to his teammates because of his Ivy League education.

"We've got a bunch of smart guys on this team," Adams said. "The biggest help for me is I've had to learn five systems. You learn it fast, and you're able to pick up on the little nuances."

Adams isn't alone in forging a reputation for being intelligent and hardworking, two crucial traits for an offensive lineman.

Although undersized at 6-2, 285 pounds, Ferentz has held his own at the point of attack and has sound technique. His presence as a backup center has allowed the Texans to shift Jones to left guard with the second team.

I'm taking this like I could get cut. I feel like I let my team down with the way I played. --Rahim Moore on play vs. 49ers

Jayson Braddock ‏@JaysonBraddock
Damaris / Bonner / Worthy are all on notice. Cecil can work the slot & Demps can return. Those 3 will have to prove worth in both areas.

Bonner has to play faster in game. Worthy has to be rockstar return man or add value at WR. Damaris has to become rock star WR in slot or add value as return man. Clock is ticking on all 3

Hoyer dropped the shotgun snap and then picked it up to only have it batted down.

Savage quick out to Khari w/ anticipation, Lee not ready

Each offense 1s / 2s / 3s got a shot against opposing defense w/ 1 play to win the game. Mallett hit Cecil on EZ fade for TD.....

Savage had a throw that wouldn't have been completed by anyone w/ lesser of an arm. Closing window with two defenders & needles in to Lab

Alfred Blue had a beautiful, patient cut in 11s today.

Charles James & Kevin Johnson had back to back pass breakups on Brian Hoyer. Then Hoyer threw a great end zone fade to a diving Jace Davis.

AJ Bouye had a few nice pass breakups.

Mallett on 5 straight reps hit Damaris, then Strong, Labhart, EZ, and Bonner. Windows were almost non-existent on a few throws.

Later Kevin blankets Travis Labhart & Savage throws backshoulder but Labhart with a highly contested catch against great coverage.

Keith Mumphery caught a ball going over the middle & as soon as he did, Kevin Johnson punched it out for an incompletion. Talented kid.

Charles James "I grew up watching Hard Knocks & I use to say if I ever got a chance to be on that show, that would be pretty cool"

Mallett was not helped during team today. One point his receivers dropped three passes in a row. #Texans

Mallett was deadly accurate in 1 on 1s today, so I asked him why? "The more reps I get, the better I get. I'm still improving."

C James "1 catch on me won't break my confidence. I've been doing this for 17 years. So you've got 17 yrs of offenses trying to kick my ass"

Charles James: "I just go out and go hard"

Finau raved about JJ Watt & Muhammed Wilkerson. Played behind 2 of the best 34 DEs in the game. Also, Sheldon Richardson & "Snacks" for NYJ

Finau had an interesting journey from junior college, West Virginia (played w Chris Neild), spent 3 yrs with the Jets.

Finau said he grew up in New Zealand where rugby was huge. Asked about Hayne, said Polynesian guys stick together. Said Hayne's an athlete.

Demps with the would be pick 6

Kevin Johnson and James Ferentz getting into a little scuffle. #Takealap

Watching Mallett today in 1 on 1s. He's been dealing. Haven't seen him this on his entire time here.

1 on 1 Clowney dogged Griffin. Ryan couldn't do anything but have a coke and a smile

Greg Bailey ‏@GregBailey13
Best #Texans quote today: Safety Rahim Moore told me he played so bad last we'll he's practicing this week like he's going to get cut.

#Texans Morris with a nice pick on a deep ball.

#Texans squared off in a little scrum. Stopped well short of a camp fight but it's hot and players are cranky.

#TexansCamp ‏@HoustonTexans
O'Brien says his middle brother and parents watched #HardKnocks episode last night. Sent the under 12 viewers to another room.

O'Brien: "Our red zone offense and red zone defense is decent. Our short yardage offense still needs to come along."

"We want to win. That is always the number one goal. We want these guys to go out and compete and put their best skills on tape."

"We do a little bit more each day with him. It has been three days in a row which is good. So far, so good."--O'Brien on Jadeveon Clowney

O'Brien on Denver: "I would say that we better be ready to play. All of our players have to be ready to go."

After seeing Hard Knocks last night, I do want Charles James to make it. I like his attitude.

While you guys wonder why Mallett isn't taking reps with the ones, I'm bothered that he threw two picks against the twos.
But as someone up-thread said, our defense (especially the secondary) IS pretty good. So maybe no biggie.

Mal had a bad day yesterday, but rebounded with a good day today with the 1s.

WR DeAndre Hopkins
(on if anything changes with QB Ryan Mallett starting this week) “No, nothing changes at all. We’re still
going to go out and execute our game plan. I think Mallett is going to get the job done doing that.”

(on how he would describe the quarterbacks) “All those guys are out here working hard. They’re all striving
towards the same goal and that’s to get wins for this team. Individually, I really can’t categorize them
because they’re all doing the same thing.”

(on if he favors one of the quarterbacks) “No, not at all.”

(on how it feels to know Head Coach Bill O’Brien thinks he is a force in the league) “I really don’t consider
words. I go out and play on the field. My actions are going to speak for themselves, no matter what people
say, what I’m going to do. I got to go out and prove it.”

(on if he enjoys working with the veteran wide receivers) “Yeah, there are some older guys in there like
Cecil (Shorts) and Nate (Washington). Me going into my third year, those guys played a lot more football
than I have. I’m still asking those guys questions about what to do and what not to do on the field. We’re all
helping each other out. Even the young guys, they’re helping each other out as well.”

(on WR Keith Mumphrey) “He’s working hard. He’s out here trying to compete for a job. He’s coming out
every day competing.”

(on the depth at receiver) “Yeah, we got a lot of athletes out here. We’ve got a lot of guys that can make
plays. They’re going out and doing it every day.”

(on WR Jaelen Strong) “Yeah, Jaelen, he’s a guy that’s working hard. He’s in the film room, he’s studying,
he’s asking a lot of questions, what should he do and what shouldn’t he do. I’m really not too concerned
about him because he’s improving. That’s all that matters as long as he keeps going on.”

(on if he was similar to WR Jaelen Strong when he was a rookie) “Yeah, of course. I tell him that all the
time. I was just like you, man, I was out here making mistakes, thinking and not so much going out and
playing. But once you pick up the speed of the game and get in your play book, it’s second nature.”

(on when he started to feel comfortable in the NFL) “I would say, I kind of got broken in early, the San Diego
game. The catch I had, it was Monday night. It was a diving ball and I won it. It was a pretty big play for our
team. I’ll say that kind of broke the ice for me.”

(on if that was his first regular season NFL game) “Right.”

(on how it was getting ready for that game) “I was nervous, I’m not going to lie. It was a Monday night
football game. Everybody was watching. Coming off the season we had before, there was a lot of attention
on us. I was nervous, I’m not going to lie, I was very nervous from what I recall.”

(on how he handled the nerves pregame) “I handled it well. I just went out and first possession I was thinking
a lot. After that, I went out and played. Once I caught my first pass, it was kind of like, ‘okay, this is what I
do. This is my job.’”

(on if WR Jaelen Strong’s mistakes are due to nerves) “Yeah, I see the mistakes he makes, he thinks a lot.
That just comes with getting comfortable with this offense.”

(on S Corey Moore) “He’s another guy that’s out here working. These guys that we have that are young,
they’re out here trying to prove themselves that they belong out here. They’re doing a good job.”

(on acting like a long time veteran) “That’s how I was raised, man. That’s how I was raised.”

(on if he talks to the younger receivers) “Yeah, I talk to those guys all the time. Not just in here. We’re eating
lunch, we’re talking about things that they can improve. They’re always asking me questions, so I’m always
happy to do deliver an answer.”
...
FS Rahim Moore
(on what the team needs to work on and what he needs to improve) “Team-wise? Just communication,
open field tackling and really just making all plays, you know what I’m saying? If we ever get on our heels,
let’s not get confused. Let’s stay focused, keep our poise. For me personally, I didn’t like my performance
the first game. I was a little anxious, but I felt like I let the team down, so I’m looking forward to me getting
better this week. I approach practice differently, like as if I could get cut. Seriously, that’s how bad I felt and
you know, team-wise, I feel like we had an overall good game. We got a good opponent coming in this
week. It’s going to be a big test for us.”

(on taking the performance against the San Francisco 49ers personally) “Absolutely. That’s just how I am.
If you do bad, it’s not a good thing, you know? You always want to improve and be real with yourself and
that’s one thing I am. The film doesn’t lie, so it tells the truth.”

(on what he wants to show the Denver Broncos this weekend) “I mean, that I am who they thought I was,
you know? That I’m still Rahim Moore, that I love the game of football and my love now is for the Texans.
My love was once for the Broncos. I have no hard feelings. I had a great experience there. I had some great
players that I played with and now I have the same type of talent on this team as well, so big ups for the
Broncos, but now I’m a Texan and I’m excited about it.”

(on looking forward to facing QB Peyton Manning and the Broncos offense) “I mean, it’s preseason. You
always want to be looking forward to facing anybody. It’s going to be a tough task because I know how
Peyton operates. I know how the offense operates. It’s the reason why they’ve been the top three in offense
for the past three or four years, so we got a big head on our shoulder right now.”

(on whether it’s harder or easier knowing QB Peyton Manning’s tactics) “It’s harder. One thing about Peyton
is that in his offense that whatever you’ve seen the week before, they’re not that same team. They’re going
to constantly get better and that’s scary. So, I believe it’s his first time playing in preseason, so he’s going
to be ready, the whole teams going to be ready. So, so are we.”

(on what he attributes his performance against the San Francisco 49ers to) “No, I’m always focused. It’s
the rust. And I feel like a few tackles I missed that I could have made those. But that’s the only time you’re
going to get real, true, live experience. So you just go back to the drawing board, see what you did wrong
and I fixed those mistakes this week in practice, so I’m looking forward to just going out there and putting
something else better on film.”

(on giving back to Dorsey High School in his home town) “Well, in the inner city, man, it’s tough. People are
struggling. I struggled. We never was fortunate to have the top notch gear and I’ve always wanted to redo
my weight room. I’ve always wanted to give back because I love Dorsey. I grew up playing on that same
field at Pop Warner, my brother played there and it’s a certain connection that I have. So, when I was able
to get some more money in my pocket because I was able to give. So, every year that’s my goal to give
some money. I gave them a good portion of money. I want to see my high school do well because guys like
me and other players in the NFL if you give back, it keeps the competition. It keeps the recruiting big. And
I’m excited for it. I was very happy.”

(on how his high school experience at Dorsey shaped him) “It’s the reason why I’m here. It’s the reason
why I’m putting in extra work after practice. Dorsey showed me a lot and it was even- for me, seriously, I
was either going to play football or be in the streets in tons of gang violence, living in old ways that you
don’t want to be living in. A lot of that is due to my mom, her introducing God in my life and us being
Christians helped us overcome those obstacles. And just approaching football, it saved my life. It kept me
out of trouble, man, because if there’s no football, then what else is there to do?”

(on going back to Dorsey High School and if the new weight room has been started) “No, not yet. I just gave
money for like the helmets and jerseys and new staff wear, on-field equipment, stuff like that. So, they
should be taken care of for the next two, three years. My next goal is to redo the weight room. I probably
will do that next year.”

(on the Dorsey High School coach looking sharp in the new gear) “Absolutely, absolutely. Nike everything.”

Texans Camp Confidential: Wednesday (8/19)

Daily news and notes throughout Texans training camp.

Here are the notes, quotes, and need-to-know information from Texans training camp on Wednesday, August 19.

>>> The Texans added some depth to their safety core and return game by bringing back veteran Quintin Demps. He is a former Philadelphia 4th round draft selection who played 23 games for the Texans from 2010-12. He has a career26.7 yards per return average with two touchdowns With the moves the Texans released injured tight end Mike McFarland and defensive end Jasper Coleman. If McFarland clears waivers he will be placed on injured reserve.

>>> Demps had an interception of Tom Savage in his first practice back with the Texans which sparked a lot of excitement from the rest of the secondary. Kareem Jackson said “We are happy to have him back. We definitely embrace him with open arms. We know the type of guy he his, we know the type of worker he is. Definitely happy about having him back.”

>>> Ryan Mallett played with the first team for the majority of practice and looked the sharpest between him and Hoyer. Mallett made a nice touchdown throw to Cecil Shorts in the corner of the end zone at one point

>>> Jadeveon Clowney was slightly more active today but did not participate in any scrimmage plays. One interesting note is that Clowney does not wear any type of visible knee brace. Clowney is recovering from micro fracture surgery

>>> Bill O’Brien is still not pleased with the goal line and short yardage offense. In at least one sequence the team did not get in the end zone in a short yardage play near the end zone. Brian Hoyer fumbled the snap and while he recored his pass was batted down. In another sequence the Texans defense stopped a Mallett run offense on third and short. O’Brien said in his press conference “Our goal line offense and short yardage offense still needs to come along. Sometimes it looks good, sometimes it’s not. It’s not consistent enough. In order for us to convert on third and one or convert from the one yard line and two yard line we have to be better than we are right now.”

>>> JJ Watt is unsure if he will see any action versus the Denver Broncos on Saturday. Sports radio 610’s Brett Dolan has more on Watt: http://houston.cbslocal.com/2015/08/19/watt-may-not-see-action-against-denver/

>>> Jonathan Grimes was with the first team offense at running back for a good portion of practice. Blue was used sparingly in scrimmage drills throughout the day.

>>> Other Texans not practicing were safety Lonny Ballentine and Jumal Rolle.

>>> Strong continues to show signs of improvement but did drop a few balls.

>>> Safety Rahim Moore was very critical of his play in the game against San Francisco. “I didn’t like my performance the first game. I was a little anxious, but I felt like I let the team down, “Moore said. “I’m looking forward to me getting better this week. I approached practice differently as if I could get cut.”

>>> The consensus is that Denver will be a strong test for them especially on the defensive side of the ball. Moore commented about Manning and the Denver offense after practice “I know how Peyton operated I know their offense operates. I know how jiggy they can get. There’s a reason they have been tope three in offense the past three or four years we got (a lot) on our shoulders right now.”

Texans vs. Broncos: 10 things to watch
By Dale Robertson | dale.robertson@chron.com

August 20, 2015
The Texans try to make it 2-0 in the preseason when the host the Denver Broncos on Saturday at NRG Stadium. Here are 10 things to watch in the game:

1. Quarterbacks Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer remain front and center as they attempt to convince Texans coach Bill O'Brien the starting job should be theirs. Mallett gets the start, but it's unclear how much he'll play. That may depend on how effective he is. When Hoyer directed a quick touchdown drive against San Francisco, he got the rest of the night off.

2. It's just the preseason and neither side will be game-planning, but seeing Broncos QB Peyton Manning operating former Texans coach and current Broncos coach Gary Kubiak's offense for the first time will be as compelling as the latest installment of the Texans' QB saga. Although Manning skidded off the road at the end of last season, he's back for another go.

3. Texans safety Rahim Moore knows Manning's every armor chink from practicing against him daily over the last four seasons. Manning knows all of Moore's flaws for the same reason. It's an intriguing test for the both of them.

4. Again, although the chess game will be rudimentary at best, Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips won't be able to keep himself from throwing a curve or two at the Texans' still-gelling offense, hoping to remind Bob McNair and Rick Smith they hired the wrong guy.

5. Vince Wilfork figures to receive at least a couple of series against Denver, which should help us read the tea leaves on what he still has left in the tank. And, while we know what J. J. Watt has plenty left in his tank, seeing him tee off on the Broncos' suspect offensive line could be worth the price of admission by its lonesome.

6. Even better, O'Brien will line Watt up at tight end to show Kubiak what kind of fun he missed out on, although that's probably just wishful thinking for a preseason game.

7. Rookie inside linebacker Bernardrick McKinney, the highly regarded second-round draft pick, figures to be a lot more calmed down in his second pro game than he was against San Francisco, when he was bouncing off the walls – and Niners ball carriers. Romeo Crennel will take a long look at him because the Texans continue to hope he's going to emerge as the starter inside next to Brian Cushing.

8. The Texans couldn't score a touchdown on a gadzillion tries from the Niners' 1-yard line, so their goal-line offense will be under intense scrutiny. Of course, Hoyer and/or Mallett has to get them back to the 1 for any shot at redemption.

9. The running backs deserve a share of the blame for the aforementioned failures. Arian Foster was rarely denied from close range, but it's going to be weeks – or months – before the Texans get him back, so Foster's understudies must step up, or Jay Prosch has to make the fullback position relevant again.

10. Chandler Worthy showed some promise against the 49ers of being an answered prayer for the Texans' anemic return game, but one game does not a roster spot win. The undrafted rookie needs an encore performance to keep O'Brien from losing interest. All things being equal, he'd rather have a regular-rotation receiver running back kicks and punts to save a roster spot.

Again nothing new on starting QB, O’Brien again called it an “even battle.” #Texans

Vrabel said said Clowney like everybody else, will learn that you’re just going to be sore playing in the league.

“If I had the body of knowledge needed, then I’d probably make the decision right now,” O’Brien on making QB decision.

On how much Mallett plays on Saturday, O’Brien says he’ll just see how it goes.

Houston Texans ‏@HoustonTexans
O'Brien: "There will probably be a couple of guys that won't play in the game."

O'Brien on the QBs: "These guys really have good qualities. It is an even battle and we'll make a decision at some point."

O'Brien: "I think Tom Savage has developed pretty well. We think he has improved and we will play him a good amount on Saturday."

Deepi Sidhu ‏@DeepSlant
O'Brien says #Texans QB decision is "an even battle."

Brian T. Smith ‏@ChronBrianSmith
O'Brien again highlighted progress that Tom Savage has made. Wants to see him in preseason so #Texans get a better idea of what they have.

O'Brien still wants more info about QBs and wants to watch Mallett start before making a decision. Could come next or week after Saints.

John McClain ‏@McClain_on_NFL
Vrabel said Clowney will learn he's going to b sore rest of his career, like all NFL players.

Vrabel on Clowney "When they (doctors) tell me he can do more he'll do more. He's trying to come out here with a good attitude."

Greg Bailey @GregBailey13
Vrabel: Clowney's attitude is better. He got hurt for the first time and it takes time to understand that happens to everyone.

Head Coach Bill O’Brien
(on an update with the quarterback situation) “Nothing. Those guys are doing a good job. They’re out there competing and they’re looking forward to Saturday night.”

(on how he will balance playing QB Brian Hoyer and QB Ryan Mallett on Saturday) “It just kind of depends on how that goes. It’s somewhat of a - get a feel for the rhythm of the game, the play count, the types of plays that are called, and things like that. I couldn’t really answer that right now. Got to get into the game, see how it goes.”

(on whether if he wants QB Tom Savage to play the entire second half on Saturday) “I think that Tom Savage has really developed pretty well. In the end, with guys like Tom that are in their second year and younger quarterbacks, you really never know until they get a chance in a game. So, like the more reps you can get them in the preseason, the more you can really understand what they’re all about. And we think that he’s really improved, so we will definitely play him a good amount of the time on Saturday.”

(on how much the quarterback decision is decided outside of actual practices) “Absolutely. I mean it’s all, it’s not just out here. It’s all of those things go into it. You know, how they interact in the meeting room, leadership in the locker room, just all those little things. And, like I’ve said from day one, these guys, they both have really good qualities. They both have the quality of leadership, they both have the quality of intelligence. So, it’s an even battle. And like I said, we’ll make a decision at some point. We’ll go with one guy to start the season. That other guy needs to be ready to play. We played four quarterbacks last year, so you just never know but we can only play one at a time. So, we’ll pick one eventually and go with that guy.”

(on if he has the body of knowledge needed to choose a starting quarterback)“If I had the body of knowledge right now, I would probably make the decision. I need to see a little bit more and I want to give Ryan (Mallett) a chance to start a game, and put some more thought into it. Then make a decision at some point whether it’s next week or the week after. At some point, we’ll make a decision.”

(on if he is pleased with the progress through three weeks of practice) “Definitely. I think one of the things I was thinking about this morning is this was a big situational practice. I’m not sure if you guys could tell that, but we went through a lot of different situations. So in preparation for this practice this morning in the meetings we asked a lot of questions. The guys who were here last year, the veteran players, they could really answer those questions. Whereas last year they really, they didn’t know the answers yet. So we have come a long way in our situational knowledge, our knowledge of each side of the ball, on our special teams schemes, what we are doing. I think we are farther along, but again the proof is in the pudding. It depends on obviously when we go out there and play September 13th how do we do, but we got a long way to go before then and I think we are on the right track.”

(on if he will give certain veterans time off in the game Saturday) “Yeah we are going to look at that. I am not sure. We are going to talk about that tonight a little bit more as a staff, but yes. There will probably be a couple of guys that won’t play in the game.”

Linebackers Coach Mike Vrabel
(on his linebackers group) “Well I mean, I got a great group of guys. I think they love football. Brian (Cushing) is our leader, plays hard, plays his tail off, studies, it’s important to him. He’s a great teammate. Whitney (Mercilus) busts his butt every day. John Simon, Mike Mohamed, pretty much every guy we’ve got in there. So it starts at the top, it starts with Cush and it goes all the way down to the young guys we’ve got that are trying to fight for a spot here.”

(on ILB Brian Cushing talking about how he has an authenticity because he played at such a high level) “Well I mean I think anytime a coach can show players a way to make them better, I think they’re going to listen, they’re going to buy in. So when they see results, I think they tend to listen a little bit, and if they don’t see results, they’re going to start blocking you out. Hopefully we can start seeing some results on the field and take the coaching from the field and the classroom onto the football field.”

(on ILB Brian Cushing saying he thinks he could get back out there) “I don’t, I don’t. I’m 40 years old. I just turned 40, and if I could I still would, but I can’t.”

(on what it is about him that has allowed him to both play and teach at a high level) “You know, I think I was at the college level for a couple years and that helped. You don’t have as much time in the meetings, so you have to get the material across maybe a little quicker, you’ve got to narrow it down. We don’t want to do too much, we don’t want to overload the players, but certainly we want to game plan each week, whatever gives us the best chance to win, and try to get it installed and try to teach, use different methods for each guy.”

(on OLB Jadeveon Clowney saying he is the smarted coach he’s ever been around) “Well he hasn’t been around that many coaches. You know, I appreciate that from JD. He’s out here working, and trying to back, get his confidence back, get out here on the practice field and start working him into the games.”

(on how he sees OLB Jadeveon Clowney progressing) “To plan, he’s got a schedule that we’re trying to follow with the trainers and with his doctor. When they tell me he can do more, we’ll put him in more.”

(on what he’s seen from OLB John Simon this year) “You know, John’s continuing to learn our defense. He was a guy that I had at Ohio State, he plays his tail off, he plays hard, kind of in that Brooks Reed mold that he’s continuing to get better, working on pass rush, continuing to work pass rush, work on his coverage, set the edge, and try to be physical for us.”

(on OLB Jadeveon Clowney wanting to learn) “I think the one thing I’ve noticed is his attitude is better, his attitude is much better, and I know that last year he was frustrated because he got hurt. I mean you get hurt in this league as a young player, it’s hard to handle. You’ve never really been injured, but everybody gets hurt in this sport, and I think he’s starting to realize that he’s going to have to play with a little bit of discomfort, he’s going to be sore, for the rest of his career. That’s how it goes in the National Football League. He’s seeing those things and I think he’s getting some advice from his teammates and good advice and is trying to come out here with a great attitude.”

(on hand placement being an important part of playing linebacker) “I think if you’re talented and you’ve got some length and you’ve got some power, I think if you play with great technique, you’re going to be that much better. I try to teach the technique and then let them take it from there. They’ve got to figure out their own style, how they want to play. I don’t have all the answers. I just give them my perspective, and then if they can go out there and get the job done using my technique or their technique, whoever technique, it doesn’t really matter, but I just try to give them what I know and what I’ve watched guys do over the course of 20 years.”

(on what point in his career he learned how important that was) “Probably my second or third year. I played against some guys in Pittsburgh, so I was lucky to practice against good players and tight ends in Pittsburgh and play with good linebackers there.”

I think this is the first time we've seen OB stray from his alternating Hoylett with the 1s, and it's likely just that the timing worked before yesterday... but Mallett worked with the 1s Wednesday and Thursday fwiw.

Hey PO, answer your own question ? Back-to-back days in TC with Mallett at the helm with the 1s: WIW if anything ?

I think it just worked out that this week OB had to shift it so the starter would rep with the 1s on Thursday before a Saturday game, nothing more.

I noted it because people want to know.

.

Any hamstring issues for Polk at this point cannot be considered "nothing serious." He missed the entire 2014 preseason with a Grade 2 hamstring tear. He missed or was limited a good deal of the regular season with the hamstring problem. He has started the preseason too eerily like last year. Hamstring injuries, as most of you have learned are ALWAYS worrisome in that they tend to be chronic and recurrent if not a perfect setup for compensatory injuries. I like the idea of having a healthy Polk on the Texans. I'm just concerned that we may have inherited half of that package. We'll see.

The RB situation is bad. Or the OL is a lot worse than I think it is. The only RB that was able to get too and thru the holes was Grimes and I think he's just an avg RB. Polk ran hard too but played with the 2-3's so it's kinda hard to tell about him. What should I be more worried about Doc, Polk's hamstrings or his chronic shoulder issues?

Blue and Hilliard are slow to the hole and are avg RB's at best.

Everyone is telling me that our offense is light and day better than last year, stop raining on the parade bruh.

I'll give you permission to worry about both.:bag: In all seriousness, the hamstring issues for the reasons I posted above. He first dislocated his shoulder in 2008, and evidently continued to show progressive shoulder instability, until, after very limited NFL action, he finally required labrum surgery in January of last year. Typical rehab for this injury is ~9 months. He has actually had very limited action/exposure since his surgery (45 carries last year) to really know how his shoulder joint, which at the time of surgery was unsurprisingly discovered to have significant degenerative changes, will hold up over time given higher reps. There is an approximate 15% recurrence of shoulder instability following surgical treatment that a study of NFL players revealed......and most of those in the study did not represent RBs which by the position's very nature probably experience the higher end of constant impacts to their shoulders.

The RB situation is bad. Or the OL is a lot worse than I think it is. ?

Speaking of our OL, anybody know what's up with the X-man this week ? I dunno, wonder how he's doing with his soft-tissue issue ? Billy said not to worry as he'll be back soon. I'd sure feel better if we saw him in NOLA this weekend bowling over big-azz DLineman like he did at UCLA: the real season is almost here.

Billy also said that he had no idea who his starting QB was going to be and it was an open competition. Billy saying "be back soon" probably means "cut".

Texans coach Bill O'Brien confirmed what has long been assumed about Jadeveon Clowney's status for the New Orleans game Sunday. There's no chance he'll play.

"Nope," O'Brien said. "He'll be out there practicing, but he won't play in this game."

It seems unlikely the Texans would put Clowney on the field against Dallas in the preseason finale, either, but it's still hoped he'll be able to contribute in the limited role of rushing the passer against Kansas City in the regular-season opener Sept. 13. Toward that end, the Texans plan to increase his workload in the days ahead. He had microfracture surgery on his right knee in early December.

"We'll do a little bit more with him in practice," O'Brien said. "I've been pleased with the way he has reacted and practiced with the plan that we've had for him so far. He's eager to get out there. One of the good signs with him is that he'll come up to us and say, 'Can I do more? I'd like to be in that drill,' because he sees the competition, and he'd like to be in more. But we have to stick to the medical plan. I'm definitely pleased with how he's approached it so far."

OB on Mallett "You don't want a guy who finds that out to be doing backsprings cause he's happy. He's a competitor and he's disappointed"

Watching Mallett express his frustration with not winning the job shows what kind of competitor he is. He'll be playing at some point.

Ryan Mallett just impressed the heck out of me. He didn't give any clichés about losing to Hoyer. Said exactly how he feels -- disappointed!

Ryan Mallett said he doesn't feel any better today than yesterday cause he wanted job so bad. He's still really disappointed, it's obvious"

Despite the fighting in Washington, Bill O'Brien is still a huge proponent of joint practices, especially on the road.

Bill O'Brien describes Wilfork as "a man that's clearly not under 300 pounds." Was very impressed w/his condition coming into camp.

O'Brien says you want a guy who isn't happy he didn't win a starting job. Said Mallett has prepared like a starter last two days.

O'Brien on CB depth: "We have a lot of playmakers. It's a very competitive position."

Mallett: "Being here for another year, obviously really helped me. I have to be ready at the drop of a hat & be ready to help this team win"

Mallett on his QB role: "I'm going to prepare like I'm starting every Sunday. I can't let the team down when my number is called."

Well, I hope RB, OL, and QB are all high on the Texans shopping list next off-season (Draft or FA)! They need some new blood at RB and OL, and unless someone develops at QB this season, we'll need some new blood there too! Man, I can't believe I'm already talking about the off-season and we're not even into the regular season yet! :toropalm:

No I want him cut!

Seriously, dude is shown at the building from 7am to 10pm in the previous episode and now we see he spends most of it in bed lol. Funny when you see him all cosy with his JJ Watt cuddly toy and a personal alarm call and Kjax is trying to get some kip on a fold-out chair in a sleeping bag!!

To me this says a lot about what VW thinks of Nix, without saying it.

Kinda goes against that "Team" mentality O'Brien is trying to establish here isn't it? The no logos, no names, the funny lockers, no segues... all that stuff.

No.

Because when jj hits the. Field he's just like all those other guys in that he's expected to work.

And there's always exceptions. Just like you're not typically going to cut a second round pick who is not looking too good in his second year, you vet rest days, and guys are paid and valued differently by the organization.

That just means that those guys are going to work like everyone else, but of course the better you are the more perks come with that.
