Ryan Mallett traded to Texans

same thing Aaron Rodgers did, sit behind a Hall of Fame QB and learn....

worked out well in Green Bay, could work out here in Houston...

You really aren't comparing Mallet to Aaron Rodgers are you? Rodgers actually came in and produced a few times, unlike Mallet. Texans aiming for that number one pick again this year. Winston or Mariota.

i see the "Upside" everyone has "Upside". My point is now we have 4 back up QBs. All i want is a "OK" starter !

How many back up QBs does it take to make 1 starter. I guess we're gonna find out....

well at the moment the Texans have 4 backup QBs...now time to see which one sucks less than the other to call a starter...

I would think by week 3-4, Mallet should be the starter...

just the situation they were in. We can't compare careers because Mallet's hasn't started yet but the situation of sitting by a HOF QB for a few years then getting the chance to start is similar...

we will have to wait and see if Mallet can make the most of his chance...

I like the trade. Mallet has a ton of talent and he sat behind Brady - for a 6th I am very willing to take that gamble.

I hate the timing. We have gone through all of camp and preseason without him. Time in which he could've learned the system, get comfortable with his teammates and time for us to to find out, if he is worth playing.

Right now we have to start Fitz. And I don't know how long it will take, until Mallet would be ready - and when he is ready, we need to be willing to make a change at QB. And this also means, that we probably won't give Savage a chance at some games at the end of the season.

I don't get the timing at all - what good does he do us now?

And I liked Billy saying even after Thursday nights disaster in NRG for both
Ksonum and Savage that he was all but positive that the 3 QBs on the roster would remain unchanged. Looks like Billy can also play that hand close to the vest, huh ?

before he sucked in pre season we would have paid a lot more for him than a 6th, i imagine thats what the texans were hoping for since they drafted a QB in the 2nd round this season.

The Pats wanted too much for him earlier - think a 2nd, they were trying to get something at lease before they released him.

You really think the system OB is running is that far removed from the Pats?

I'd venture to say he's instantly the most experienced QB for the system on our roster.

There was the rumor that they want a late rounder (5th to 7th) at least a couple of weeks ago. Even if we had to give up a 5th for him then, just having him through camp would've been worth it...

To be fair O'Brien did say "as we sit here right now" He was not definitive at all, and you almost had to know something was up because they held Mallet out of the last game.

I agree, might take a week or so for him to get all the jargon down, but I would think it would be very close to what he learned in NE

^^^ This.

He comes in having played in this offense for 3 years and studying it with Tom Brady.

And he was drafted by the Patriots when OB was the OC... which means that OB probably had a big say in the Patriots drafting him in the first place. Then OB spent a year with him before moving on to Penn State.

That would be crazy he starts week 1...Thanks for the magic in the pre-season Fitzy, but now it's the kid's turn....

Not that i'm hyped about this trade but it will be interesting to see who the texans start next week. I wouldnt put it past O'brien to name Mallett the starter since he is obviously very high on the kid.

He's got a week to introduce him to everyone and get him ready to play.

That's going to be rough.

And then I forgot the Godsey connection. He's worked with Mallett even more than OB has.

It's not like they're making this trade without knowing precisely what they're getting.

They're saying now that it's a CONDITIONAL 6.

That add's a little to the pucker factor. But even though I'm not up to speed on Mallet, I find I'm still pretty good with today's events. I mean, ANYTHING that changes the situation at QB is a good thing and if the price is fair I'm cool with it.

any word if there's a contraction extension for Mallett involved? god, i hope not.

If there is, do it now for back up money. If he becomes the starter and does well, you have him cheap for a few years.

If you wait and he miraculously takes off and say gets the Texans into the playoffs and has a good year, now you have to pay him AND Watt...

just a theory...

Oh good lord. Why? What the hell has Mullet got over what we already have? He's not an improvement over the crap we already have at QB, and we're giving up a draft choice for him?

This is stupid. I totally disagree with this move. Especially this late.

Chris Mortensen ‏@mortreport
O'Brien had then-Pats offensive assistant George Godsey work extensively with Mallett that rookie year. Godsey is now Texans QB coach.

On Ryan Mallet to Texans, Bill O'Brien worked majority of time w Tom Brady & Brian Hoyer in '11, his last year with Pats and Mallett's first

^^^ This, and I think a 6th round pick is more than fair.

Unless you are part of the Keenum Cult. Lot's of p!ssed off fans you can bet.

Terms: The #Texans traded a 2016 conditional 7th round pick for #Patriots QB Ryan Mallett, source said.

Thinking a 7th that could turn into a 6th.

Paul Perillo ‏@pfwpaul
And the Mallett draft choice is for 2016

Pick for Mallett looks like a conditional choice that will be a 7th unless he plays 40% of the snaps for Houston, which would make it a 6th

Just wondering why this didn't get done sooner? I'm happy that it happened because thes. QBs weren't taking the Texans anywhere.
Asking price, I'm sure. 'Why over pay for a mediocre QB', is the new mantra post Schaub.

A 7th round PICK!

OK.

I think this is a genius trade.

EDIT: Oh, wait. A 7th that turns into a 6th if he plays X number of snaps. So a conditional 6.

If Keenum is released and not picked up by another team, I would hope UH would bring Case on board as a coach.

I have always thought Case would be an excellent college QB coach and eventually a college OC. I can see him following in Kliff Kingsbury's footsteps.

The current OC/ QB coach at UH should have been fired Friday night as the team was leaving the field.

He had one bad game this preseason, one good game and another game where he threw all of 3 passes. He's very much still a mystery.

I think the hype comes from his college days and the possibility of him being a first round pick if it wasn't for his character concerns. Plus sitting behind brady and learning all these years. He has to like coming closer to home though.

I can't believe this late, right before the season starts, we trade for a crappy 3rd string QB when we already have three of them on our team already.

I am gonna ***** up a storm about this horseshit in here.

so you are ok with 3 QBs who are just learning O'Brein's system this year rather have a young kid that has been in the same system for the last 3 years and sat behind arguably on of the greatest QBs in the history of the game?

alright....BUT Mallet already knowing the system is a huge advantage over Savage and Fitzpatrick, plus has a better arm than both...

So, anybody wants to guess of this "plan" that OB has been talking about?

He signed a middle of the road vet, getting tied up with the cap money.
He drafted Savage in the fourth round.
Now he traded for Mallett, who will be a free agent next year.

Throwing dart?

It's not like anyone is offering up Aaron Rodgers, Andrew Luck, or Drew Brees in trade offers. The team can only fill so many spots in the draft. None of the QBs drafted in the 1st round are as talented as the trio that should go in the top 10 next year. That isn't saying that Mariota, Winston, and Hundley will all be All-Pros and Bortles, Bridgewater, and that other guy will be scuba, but none was worthy of the 1st pick and the cost was too much to jump back in and grab them at the end of the round.

bah humbug. Mullet doesn't know crap about our system. Do you really think BoB just copied the Pats playbook when he left, then dusted it off after Penn state? At least the crappy QBs we already have (almost) know the playbook.

I'm with you on this Thorn, although i am not upset about it for a 7th round pick. Just indifferent about the whole thing.

Unless O'brien saw something in the kid back in the day that makes him believe he is the next Tom Brady, which is very possible. Oh well it is what it is, guess we'll see what happens.
