2014 Texans Talk Mock Draft SELECTION

The San Francisco 49ers select...

Deone Bucannon - SS - Washington State - PAC-12

Deone.gif

I cannot believe this beast is still on the board. I have him rated as my #2 Safety in the draft (behind Clinton-Dix) and the #1 SS. I grade him as a late first-rounder so I think he's an absolute steal here. I was on the verge of taking him with both of my 2nd round picks, but I resisted the temptation because SF really needed a CB and a WR. I can't pass any longer.

Bucannon goes 6-1, 211 lbs and has the long arms that SF wants in their DB's. He ran a sub 4.5-forty at the Combine and has top notch athleticism for the position. He doesn't have elite range, but his range is top notch for a SS. He can cover RB's and TE's and can obviously come up and make a hit. He's the total package as an in-the-box Safety and a perfect fit for the 49ers defense.

Another fantastic pick by WolverineFan.

#28 player on my board (#2 S). Complete steal this late in the draft.

He is another guy that I am absolutely in love with and for some reason the consensus doesn't agree with me. This kid is a future Pro Bowler.

I'm with you on this one. I gambled on him slipping to me in the third. He almost did. Some ya win, some ya lose.

I've never seen Bucannon play, he wasn't even on my radar at all.

I feel very confident that he will be valued a lot higher by NFL teams than he is by the media.

I think drafnicks and media guys overlook him because of where he played. Mike Leach is his coach (nobody watches a Mike Leach team for defense) and lately, even before Leach, Washington St has had terrible defenses. Plus they are never on TV.

I haven't seen a bad game on tape. He's a 1st rounder.

14 tackles and 1 FF in an opening week 7 point loss at Auburn.

Even the games they got crushed in (Stanford, Oregon St, Oregon, Arizona St, Colorado St) he was still all over the field.

43 tackles, 2 TFL, 3 INTs, and 1 FF combined in those five games.

Great selection! Was hoping he would slip :barman:

I agree. It's astounding to me that a guy like Calvin Pryor (no offense to him) is flying up draft boards while Bucannon is considered a 3rd round talent. Then again, how many media guys and draftniks were watching Wazzou instead of Louisville the last few years? Not many I bet. Despite playing in the Pac-12, Bucannon got almost no exposure and is severely under the radar.

Clinton-Dix and Bucannon are my top safeties in this draft and it's not close. I grade them both as 1st rounders. Pryor, Joyner, and Ward follow them with 2nd round grades.

Kony Ealy redeems himself, runs a mid 4.6 40 after running a 4.91 at the Combine. Rumors now suggest he could go as high as #10 to Detroit to team with Ansah.

Quite a run on RBs at the moment.

Keep it up, more players for my Cardinals.

RB is one position where I think that the gap between UDFA and 1st rounder is the smallest. Especially given the lifespan of the average back.

Proxy pick for htownfan32 via PM.

The Baltimore Ravens select...

Marcus Martin - C - USC - Pac-12

Center is a big question mark. Gino Gradkowski was sub par, Baltimore is investing heavily in TE and OL. If Kubes is going to be the OC, you better believe this team needs a strong O-line to run block and set up the play action.

16(80) New York Jets (---) ON THE CLOCK: 7:00am - 11:00am

17(81) Miami Dolphins (htownfan32) PM'ed
18(82) Chicago Bears (steelbtexan)
19(83) Cleveland Browns (Dutchrudder)
20(84) Arizona Cardinals (kiwitexansfan)
21(85) Green Bay Packers (mussop)
22(86) Philadelphia Eagles (beerlover)

Nobody claimed the Jets today so we will probably just group pick them tomorrow. If you would like to contribute then just give out a position group that you think they should address (no names).

For instance, I think pass rusher (OLB) is their biggest need on defense and TE & OL are big needs on offense. They have already addressed WR and CB thus far.

We'll take suggestions tonight and can start off tomorrow morning with the group pick and get this thing rolling again.

I will take on the Jets if that's OK.

Jackson Jeffcoat - DE/OLB Texas Big 12.

Jeffcoat is a born pass rusher. He has the abilty to turn the corner. He needs to gain strength so that he can turn power into strength. That can happen with the NFL workout regimen..

If I'm wrong for taking the Jets on please tell me. I've had a rough day.

I'd rather an individual ran the team myself.

No problem, just trying to keep the draft moving along.

Thanks steelb. Please make the Jets picks going forward.

I know we aren't at this point yet, but I vote to put the draft on pause after we conclude round 3 and wait for the compensatory pick announcement.

The NFL awarded 3 picks last year and 3 picks can obviously change the results of the draft moving forward if we were to proceed without them.

That is the plan. The draft will pause until comp picks are announced next week. I still expect to finish round 3 today, so everyone keep going.

Dang you Sb, JJ was next #1 on Colts board. Poor Jeffcoat had to spend 2 1/2 years under terrible DC Manny Diaz. Diaz tried to put square pegs in round holes instead of utilizing a players talent. As a result Jeffcoat was underutilized and under the radar. Only in the last half of this season were you able to see his real capabilities.

Not happy with you either htown32, Marcus Martin was #2 on my list.

The Miami Dolphins select...

JaWuan James - OT - Tennessee - SEC

I like O-linemen. Now the Miami O-line looks something like: Brandon Albert LT - Zack Martin LG - Mike Pouncey C - Nate Garner/Sam Brenner RG - JuWuan James RT. Recipe for success for Ryan Tannehill and Lamar Miller? I think so.

I think he's underrated by a lot of big boards right now. I was curious to see how far he'd fall in this mock.

With the 83rd pick in the 2014 TT Mock Draft Extravaganza, the Cleveland Brownies select...

Dion Bailey - FS - USC

6787638.jpg

The Browns have nobody at FS right now. wHitner will be the SS and he's getting close to 30, so they need someone that can cover more of the field.

CBSSports review of him:

STRENGTHS: Lanky, athletic hybrid defender with extensive starting experience at outside linebacker and safety. Very good diagnosis skills. Reads the action quickly and is rarely out of position. Experience in the box shows as he is comfortable in traffic, showing very good awareness and vision to weave through the trash to get to the ball.
Unselfish defender. Frequently takes out the legs of oncoming blockers, leaving teammates to make the easy tackle and occasionally wiping out the blockers and the ballcarrier, by himself.

Quick, short backpedal and good fluidity in his hips to change directions. Accelerates smoothly and has good speed, overall. Good body control and hands for the interception (11 over his career). Durable. Missed one game due to injury in three seasons as a starter.

WEAKNESSES: Size limitations will force Bailey to convert to a more traditional safety role in the NFL, a position he only started one season while with the Trojans (2013). Relies more on instincts and technique than physicality. Falls off too many tackles as he attempts to grab and pull ballcarriers to the ground rather than consistently driving through them. Missed spring of 2013 while recuperating from shoulder surgery following the 2012 season.

COMPARES TO: Eric Weddle, San Diego Chargers - It remains to be seen if Bailey can handle the transition to the NFL as well as the Chargers' All-Pro safety, but like Weddle at Utah, Bailey's instincts, fluidity and penchant for big plays made him a consistent and versatile difference-maker at the collegiate level.

Browns Draft so far:
Blake Bortles - QB - UCF
Odell Beckham Jr. - WR - LSU
Bradley Roby - CB - Ohio State
Carlos Hyde - RB - Ohio State
Dion Bailey - FS - USC

The Arizona Cardinals select Ed Reynolds - Safety - Stanford - PAC12

Stanford-Ed-Reynolds-Player-of-the-week-action-photo.jpg

Didn't the Cardinals just pick a safety? Yes, yes we did.

Mathieu is going to be playing Nickel Back a lot. Reynolds will play a lot at safety.

Patterson, Mathieu, Reynolds, Ward, Cromartie.

Thanks for passing.

Also, Reynolds had a 1st round grade from me so was too good to pass on.

Next up:

21(85) Green Bay Packers (mussop) (emailed)
22(86) Philadelphia Eagles (beerlover)
23(87) Kansas City Chiefs (JCTexan)
24(88) Cincinnati Bengals (NCTexan)
25(89) San Diego Chargers (Texan4Ever)
26(90) Indianapolis Colts (Texian)
27(91) New Orleans Saints (Coon)

I like Bailey as a prospect. Solid versatility.

It was between him and Reynolds. Really the only two FS prospects that are worth a pick in the 3rd at this point IMO. I like Bailey's instincts, but Reynolds has much more experience at the position. Also, Reynolds tore an ACL a couple years ago, so that concerns me about his longevity. Either way, I think they can make an impact in year 1.

I love the Reynolds pick. When you took Ward I was wondering how you were going to fit him with Mathieu. Now I know. Fantastic. That completes a very solid secondary.

I don't like Bailey at all. I had 12 Safeties rated higher than him when he went off the board (he's my #20 S overall). I think he is purely an in box SS and I have a mid-6th round grade on him.

Again, that doesn't mean it's a bad pick. It's just interesting how we all can see the same player and see totally different things.

Nooooo!!!

Wishful thinking that you were gonna get him at the bottom of round 3. This TE class is just not deep at all. At least it helps us understand where to expect some of these TEs to be picked.

Me mocking him to the Texans in round 4 is just not an option. But then again, I think you knew that.

With the 87th pick the Kansas City Chiefs select...

Dakota Dozier - OG - Furman - South

Dozier exhibits light feet, a fluid kick-slide, and is a natural bender. Gets good arm extension to keep defenders out of his chest, and utilizes his lower half well to establish leverage on contact and absorb the power rush.. The Chiefs have a huge need at both Guard spots and Dozier is the top OG available here.

Love Dozier's potential.

Via proxy, beerlover and the Eagles select:

Marcus Smith - DE - Louisville
6-3 252

2nd in nation (1/2 sack to Trent Murphy) w/14.5. thought he almost stole the show in bowl game over Bridgewater. has been working out @ OLB & looking natural according to his pro-day

Marcus was my highest graded prospect on the board & it wasn't even close, so glad another valued prospect slipped into Eagle talons. Just finished watching the U vs Cardinals & he just jumps off the screen. Big can set, hold or redirect edge, think if he develops a rip move to inside he can close seam as well. Explosive with motor, everything Clowney should be (saw him double teamed with hands in the face too) yet still on the board late 3rd.

I follow the Eagles relatively closely and I like what you have done. Donald adds nasty depth and versatility to that d-line, Matthews is a solid receiver that should contribute right away, and they needed OLB depth. Good work.
