Official 2010 Training Camp Thread

Here's what I noticed:

The Saints' second-string offense fared even worse in the two-minute drill. Quarterback Patrick Ramsey threw an interception to Houston linebacker Darryl Sharpton on his second pass attempt.

He's pushing the coaches for playing time just as hard as Demeco did
as a rookie. He might be a steal in this draft.

•The Saints' second-string offense fared even worse in the two-minute drill. Quarterback Patrick Ramsey threw an interception to Houston linebacker Darryl Sharpton on his second pass attempt.
•Saints cornerback Jabari Greer had a rare miscue during situational team drills. He got burned by receiver Kevin Walter, who got behind him for a touchdown catch of about 35 yards.
•Saints guard Carl Nicks was back on the field with the first team after being temporarily demoted during the morning session.
•Saints fullback Heath Evans and defensive end Jimmy Wilkerson were held out of Wednesday's afternoon practice, as they continue to be limited to one practice per day to rest their recovering knees. Houston's Johnson and defensive end Mario Williams were among a handful of Texans who were held back during the afternoon to rest their legs as well. That's a common occurrence for the Texans when the team goes indoors for the PM practice.

I think Sharpton is beating Adibi, Clark, Bentley and Bing for Cushing's down time. Coming from me, one who openly questioned the pick and all but wrote off his chance of having any impact, much less as a rookie. I mean Kubiak put it out there pretty flatly. The question though...

If Sharpton out performs Diles.....who is your weakside man next to Ryans and the returning Cush?

Lemme steal dalemurphy's coach speak thing for a second, I gotta question I want to ask it...

*Coach Speak Translator Bot 9000, At Your Service*

Kubiak said it was looking like they would rather send Diles to SLB instead of Sharpton. Does Kubiak really believe Diles will switch back or is Kubiak giving Sharpton his chance while not reeeeally demoting Diles (because he's still playing as Cush's backup)? Will Kubiak send "a guy on the verge of making the probowl" to the bench?

*buzzzzz.....zap.....er.....error.....*

Dang it.....

I think I had been saying (several days ago) that I expected Sharpton to possibly take Cushing's spot those first four games.

His run tackling is solid. I'd be OK with Diles, Ryans, and Sharpton those first four games.

Bing's pass coverage scares me. His pursuit of the QB was most excellent, but looked a little turned around when it came to shadowing receivers in the middle of the field.

We need a campaign to lobby the Texans to recognize at least some bloggers with press credentials like AJ and Texans Chick. They would provide timely reporting with an eye on actual football. McGobbler just gabs throughout practice and then asks someone what happened so he can regurgitate it.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to hear from AJ or TC.

Who needs amateur hour when you've got professionals just straight pwning the reporting of Texans football.

Oh. Wait a second. I forgot that the amateurs actually do the job of the professionals. My bad. I always get that backwards.

Diles looked great in the opening preseason game. I don't see him losing his job any time soon. It's OK to have 4 quality LBs on a team. The Texans have never really had this "problem" until now.

Yes, I think he'll switch back when Cushing returns. I also see Diles in the nickel during Cushing's absence.

The real loser in this camp seems to be Adibi. This was his opportunity to shine. Didn't happen, and I wonder if he has any future here.

Here are tidbits I found interesting.

The Saints are going to need to do some extra work in order to stop players like DeMario Williams. Williams seemed to be in the offensive backfield for half of the day and he would have had a sack too if this were a real game. There aren't many like the beast Williams in the NFL, but the Saints must learn to tighten up the protection in order to keep Brees safe

Demario? Seriously?

Somewhere in his research, DE Mario Williams became DeMario Williams.

I think I have seen TC on the other side of the fence. If I am not mistaken she has access via the chron.com that AJ does not.

But I want to point out, AJ's blogs are just the type material that the Texans do not like. He give play by play breakdowns and that is a no no, at least in the teams eyes. I love AJ's blog, and I do not want to see him censored in the name of access to fluff pieces.

Hmm....

After Saints LB Marvin Mitchell picked off a Texans pass in the end zone, Houston Head Coach Gary Kubiak yelled at QB Dan Orlovsky "Get you're a-- off the field."

But the best tongue lashing came when former LSU player Trindon Holiday did not do his assignment in red zone work. A Texans offensive assistant screamed "#16 get out! You can't play. We can't count on you to block anybody. Get someone else in here. Get off the field."

Who the hell were those douche.bags??

The New Orleans Saints' first-string offense had an impressive workout against the Houston Texans on Thursday, with one glaring exception - an interception thrown by quarterback Drew Brees to former Saints linebacker Danny Clark in team drills. It wasn't even clear whom the intended receiver was. Brees threw the ball directly at Clark in the middle of the field.

I wonder if Drew Brees got yelled at! :good:

Saints Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams was screaming at his defense "Can we line up right please" followed by "If we win a one on one; we are going to schedule another White House visit."

Sounds like the Texans O-line did good! :hurrah:

Did they?

Following a couple of short runs by the Texans, Saints LB's Jo-Lonn Dunbar and Troy Evans along with rookie DT Al Woods all ganged tackled Texans RB Arian Foster for no gain.

The teams worked on running game drills and Saints DE Alex Brown was all over the place on the first play while pushing around a few Texans offensive players.

On the final play of run work DT DeMario Pressley and Jay Ross combined for a nice run stuff at the line of scrimmage.

Later in the drill Saints LB Jo-Lonn Dunbar came up and laid a nice lick on Texans RB Steve Slaton and CB Danny Gorrer looked like he made an interception as he dove in front of a pass but the ball fell out of his hands

From everything I read of todays practice, the Saints got the best of us this morning

The New Orleans Saints offense didn't look like themselves on Wednesday, but played a little better Thursday during workouts against Houston.

The Times-Picayune's Kevin Spain talks to Saints beat reporter Mike Triplett about Thursday's workout.

http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2010/08/19/texans-coach-gary-kubiak-pleased-with-first-practice-against-new/

With several starters such as defensive end Mario Williams, wide receiver Andre Johnson and linebacker Brian Cushing held out of practice, Kubiak said coaches got a chance to look at several younger players. One of those players is tight end Garrett Graham, who Kubiak said has been impressive throughout camp.

"I keep seeing some young guys stepping up," Kubiak said. "We've found out a lot more about our young guys."

I don't think it was her. Her latest post said she was going to NY (NFL HQ I believe) for some football bloggers fantasy competition. That, plus the fact that she hasn't written word one about the joint practices with the Saints makes me pretty sure she's not there.

Is that a huge vote of no confidence in Studdard, that LG spot seems wide open.

Oh for the days when we had Pitts to play there.....

i wasnt watching the o-line v closely last weekend but kasey stood out as noticeably bad on a few plays (he was good on arians nice run though) so not really surprised. hes the weakest link in the o-line by a fair bit imo

i still stay briesel locks it down before preseason finishes once he stays healthy and his foot isnt bothering him badly

I don't have any inside knowledge about this, but I don't think that is what this is about. Wade Smith was signed to a comparatively large free agent contract by the Texans. As a result, they want to give Smith a very fair chance to win a starting job.

If the Texans do not let Wade Smith start in at least one preseason game, then there could be lingering uncertainties about any decision that is made to sit a player with a fat contract (Smith), while starting a player who is still making the rookie contract wages of a sixth round pick (Studdard).

I think the Texans are just going out of their way to give Smith every possible benefit of the doubt. However, whoever starts against the Cowboys in preseason game #3 is likely the starter to begin the regular season.

Ahhh I had forgotten Briesel.... well hopefully between Studdard, Smith and Briesel we can find something that works.

I feel pretty good about the other 4 spots.

It sounds like we caught them off balance yesterday, and they returned the favor today. Tomorrow's practice will be revealing.

I think so. I'm looking forward to Saturday night. Just like everyone else I see this as the first true measuring stick. This game and the next if Dallas can get an O line together by then. If not, it will be prettier for Texans fans to watch.

Do we usually play Dallas in the 3rd game when the starters play longer? The Gov's cup and all that ya know?

Yes, but not last year.

You misunderstood my remark, during open practice here during week one was when I saw her on the press's side of the fence.

No kidding. Isn't that how we lost Diles 2 yrs ago?

That was on a special teams play during a full contact practice, wasn't it? He wasn't in contact with anyone at the time, he hit is legs together or something and broke his leg.

But I don't think it was during a walk through.

You are sort of both correct.

It occurred during a special teams, non-contact drill, according to the Houston Chronicle.

That's why I posted my post.:mcnugget:

I know Pollard played well last season after the Texans picked him up, but I'm still not sure he has the range you need nowadays.
Pollard has enough range. And when he gets there, you will know he's there.
