Slowik and the offense

You're concerned about Stroud because of a Justin Fields scouting report? How did you get there?
According to the Fields' scouting report he was a talented passer. His stats were good.

So I question if it is a matter of Day's offense that made for easy throws/reads. Watching the highlights, Fields made some dang good throws. But he's not much of a passer in the NFL.

JB & your last post are probably the biggest reason for that. So... we'll see.

Well, watch some of the OSU game tape. You'll see Stroud making high level throws and reads. They rarely throw bubble screens or short LOS passes. It's just a narrative @Texian wants to present because the Texans didn't select the Georgia DT he was pumping. It gets old, really.

Fields issues are complicated and not easily understood without being in the Bears QB room. Fields holds on to the ball longer than most QBs. He has a 2.7 second pocket time before passing the ball or having the pocket collapse. That's a long time. Longer than Mahomes or Josh Allen. Longer than Watson ever did in Houston (Watson was 2.9 last year in Cleveland). Holding on to the ball has led to sacks and increased pressure. A criticism of Fields prior to the draft was that he needed to release the ball quicker. That has followed him to the NFL.

If Stroud is even a good QB that will be the 1st to come out of OSU, despite many being drafted in the 1st rd.

Lol good question! Seeing reports both from radio stations with press passes to NFL writers and the staff are all saying Stroud is doing very well. And the 4 big things that have been mentioned are reading the D, accuracy, arm strength and velocity as well as learning the system

Who are the "busts" that Day "produced"?

Haskins? Field's is a great fantasy QB but he's really like LJ. A top 10 rb that struggles to read defenses and has spotty accuracy. Maybe he gets better this yr because Poles has given him everything he needs to be successful. After yr 3 you will see if the light comes on or not.

Day didn't recruit Haskins but he was required to coach him when he was hired. It's not accurate to call Haskins a "product" of Ryan Day.

Day recruited and coached Justin Fields and CJ Stroud. That's it. Those are his only products. You need to remember, Day is only 44 years of age. Of the 14 head coaches in the B1G, Day is the third youngest.

If Stroud busts then it will be Slowik's fault, even though as Corrosion said, the football people didn't want to draft Stroud.

Stroud is a rookie QB that is likely getting baptized by fire, so to speak. Stroud isn't a grizzled veteran. It's Slowik's job to develop CJ Stroud along with the remainder of the pretty young playmakers on his offensive unit. It's my opinion that CJ and the offense will be successful IF Slowik properly develops them and comes up with good schemes that they can execute. The guy at CBS Sports agrees with me.

Is it your belief that Stroud is already an utter failure?

Slowik has already proven he can develop rookie QB's. (Purdy)

No, I hope Stroud is great. I think his peak best case scenario wont be top 5-8 it will be to 10-15 which is good, but not good enough to win championships. Think Goff or Dak.

Shanny/Slowik/Greise all had to work together to get Purdy up to speed as quickly as possible. They all did a great job.
Gotcha, so you meant to say Slowick has proven that he can develop a QB with lil Shanny & Denver QB son of a legend.

He doesn't have lil Shanny or Griese now. Do you think Jerrod Johnson is as good a QB coach as Griese (I honestly have no idea)?

I'm a big Jerrod Johnson fan, he was playing golf where I play golf just before he was hired by the Texans. I listened to him on the phone talking concepts with somebody for about 2 hrs. He was talking about one of the Detroit games. Dude is sharp as a tack. Grew up in a football family and it shows. RIP Larry Johnson

So it would be his fault if Stroud can't get past his slow intellect?

IMHO, no it wouldn't be. In reality if Stroud doesn't succeed then Caserio and Slowik will get blamed, even though we now know the Stroud pick was Hannah's pick.

even though we now know the Stroud pick was Hannah's pick.
Does she have a history of making bad picks?

Stroud was highly rated, appears to be talented enough. Rated highly. Wouldn't have been my pick, but I think most would agree it was a good pick.

Just like most people think Watson was a good pick. What happened after can't be put on the GM, imo.

Football people should be allowed to do their jobs. Marketing shouldn't come into play. Stroud wasn't unanimously highly rated.

Derrick was a bad pick. I said at the time they wouldn't win anything with him.

Football people did their job. Who did they want? Anderson? They got him.

I said the same thing about O'Brien after his first offseason. You didn't/don't agree. That's OK.

According to CnD/Corrosion and I believe them Caserio/Ryans/Slowik didn't want Stroud. Ryans did want Anderson. Stroud was a Hannah pick, gotta have somebody to market. I've also heard this story from somebody else that has friends within the Texans org. This is the main reason I chose not to renew my season tickets. Nothing has really changed down on Kirby.

Yes you did and I liked the hire at the time. BOB turned out to be an avg HC, I expect the same results from the Stroud pick.

I'm going by the same information. The way I comprehended was that they preferred Anderson over anyone in the draft.

That doesn't mean they didn't want Stroud. If they were going to walk away with one, it would be Anderson.

They got the go ahead from management to get both.

If they got Stroud & not Anderson I could understand your point.

Problem is Day's coaching so far hasn't translated to the NFL.

Justin Fields is the only QB Ryan Day has sent to the NFL outside of CJ Stroud. I'm not exactly sure Fields has been given an opportunity to succeed in Chicago where their OL and available weapons are pretty dang bad.

As for Day and Stroud.....that day hasn't even arrived yet.

Man, just amazing how someone wants to push the narrative so dang hard. If marketing was the only thing to be considered.....the Texans had that covered, hands down, with the hiring of DeMeco Ryans as HC and selection of DE, Anderson. Most fans would've been completely satisfied with Anderson at 2 b/c the defense sucked arse the last few seasons and Ryans has become somewhat of a defensive specialist scheme wise.

If Caserio and Ryans were forced to draft a player they didn't want.....no way in hail they're hiding that anger in interviews. I don't mean by tossing the organization under the bus, but how they would've discussed the draft could've made it apparent. What I saw, and my guess, everyone else saw, who watched the interview where Caserio, Ryans, Stroud, and Anderson discussed the draft....it is ducking clear that the GM/HC had a plan and they were extremely happy that it fell into place. Hail they had finally obtained their desired answers on both sides of the ball. Job well done by Caserio and Ryans in putting Hannah in the corner.....and I'm sure there's no video of Cal screaming as tears are rolling down his face, "NO ONE PUTS MY HANNAH IN THE CORNER!!!"

Great to see Cal and Janice have given the reins of the "football team" to Caserio and Ryans, while instructing Hannah to get busy selling this wonderful draft and future to Texans fans. Hail, they may have been so excited....Cal and Janice told Hannah to get involved in creating a new image.....starting with uniforms for the 2024 season.

Go Texans!!!

Go Caserio/Ryans!!!

Go Drafted Players!!!

Go Team!!!

Just signing DeMeco as the HC was all the media buzz they needed for this off-season. If you need more than that to get excited about the Texans, I don't know what to say.

I just can't imagine the Texans felt they needed another media bump. Then you got JJ for a year, ring of honor expectations.....

Who was the OC when Haskins was there?

The OC who was hired to run Urban Meyer's offense?

Urban Meyer loved running quarterbacks and the dink-and-dunk offense. His offensive scheme relegated Michael Thomas to a second-round pick when, in reality, he probably should have gone top-15. Anyway, our receivers would be open and our running QB's would overthrow them by 20 yards. I cried like a jilted teenage girl over his offensive scheme and our awful quarterbacks. Once Day was the head coach all of that went away and we went to a pro-style attack and now we're attracting excellent QB prospects and our receiver room is second to none. Ohio State runs a fun offense that kids want to be a part of. Day inherited Dwayne Haskins. It turned out the Haskins had an undisclosed issue with drugs (and/or alcohol) and so we'll never know if he could have turned his life around and maybe salvaged another shot at the NFL.

I am surprised Brian Hartline hasn’t moved on to a HC role by now. Smart by Ohio St to give him the OC title and assumed pay increase. The list of WRs he has helped develop is second to none. He will be a HC sooner than later.

Also an underrated pro WR who’s career I assume was cut short by injuries. Two 1k seasons playing on bad Miami teams. I wonder what his pro career would have been like playing on more successful teams than Miami or Cleveland?

At any rate, he was a player who got the most out of his talent. Those types of players become great coaches.

Brian Hartline is a recruiting MACHINE. As long as he and Ryan Day are at OSU our passing attack is going to be DEADLY. Unfortunately, I don't think Brian is ready to be a head coach yet. Earlier this year he went to an event and then got home, drunk, and wrecked his ATV with his buddy onboard and an ambulance had to be called. Good programs aren't necessarily thrilled about turning over their entire program to an irresponsible coach. I love Brian and he may one day be the head coach at OSU but he needs to avoid those types of mistakes.

Good god man give it up, Day has translated plenty NFL talent already and I’m not even his biggest fan. Just quit. Admit you’re wrong about Stroud. Don’t drag down Texanstalk with your bias. Ruined draft day and still keep it going. Sorry Bud, doesn’t make me feel any better about it but truth be told. Sent you plenty of solid material (interviews/tape) pre-draft but your mind was already made up. Look I dislike DW too, what he did here and now doing in Cleveland is inexcusable, I’m with you on that. But let’s not taint and brush Stroud with same stroke.

That post was made on July 9th.

And before Stroud many of his guys didn't translate. I've already said many times it appears that it looks like I got the Stroud eval wrong. How many more times do you want me to post this? In fact I've said Stroud's play has far exceed my expectations and that 10 win season I predicted before the season started with avg to slightly above avg QB play is going to happen. The future is bright.

Still don't like the person

Make silly posts about UFOs and maybe you won't be so controversial. Works for me. I think.
