Stopped reading after the 1st sentence was nonsense. We have 4 games 1 injured.
Seriously, did you have a straight face when you typed that?
Of course not. I was listening to the Bang Radio Hour while I typed that up and those dudes always get me rolling. But I like your tone there so I'm gonna borrow it.
Seriously? Is that what
you're gonna do with a straight face? Just rip the shirt and go around the ring cupping your hand to your ears for pops ala Hogan?
I don't know if I'd call it a "free pass". I think it's more that people expected Mallett to struggle almost like a rookie QB and so they're accepting his mistakes as part of the process by which he gets better (presumably). Complaints about the OL are mostly about how bad our scrubs are playing in the place of guys who are hurt. Nobody wanted or expected to be getting the injury bug's junk rubbed in their face this year (nobody ever does) so that's where those complaints are coming from. Our RB complaints are similar (No Foster leaves Blue & scrubs to try and make a running game appear). WR complaints? They've been dropping passes like crazy. That's a legit complaint.
This is my opposing view because I do feel like people are giving Mallett a free pass, and believe me I wanted Mallett more than Hoyer. Still do. There are people, however, who are treating Mallett as if he should be struggling like a rookie all because his number of starts. I completely object to that.
Think about it like this... Quarterback A and Quarterback B enter the season as virtual unknowns. Quarterback A, however, has been in the league for four years. Quarterback A has also been on his current team for an entire year more than Quarterback B. These two quarterbacks have now both played a minimum of 8 quarters as a starter for their respective teams. Given that edge in preparation Quarterback A has, do you think Quarterback B should be looking significantly better?
Well, he does. Quarterback A is Mallett and Quarterback B is Mariota.
"WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT YOU IDIOT?! HOW DARE YOU COMPARE RYAN MALLETT TO A ROOKIE EVEN THOUGH WE'RE ACTUALLY TRYING TO TREAT HIM AS A ROOKIE! YOU CAN'T COMPARE A SECOND OVERALL PICK TO A CAREER BACKUP DRAFTED IN THE THIRD ROUND! GET OUT OF HERE WITH YOUR WILD CLAIMS YOU FOOL!"
Get over yourself.
Mariota looks like the real deal and I think he is going to be a very good NFL quarterback. Not sure about elite, but we're seeing flashes of potential with him. Do I expect Mallett to be Mariota in the long run? Absolutely not. But no way should Mallett be looking
significantly worse than Mariota with such a massive edge in league-wide experience. Mallett entered the NFL before Mariota even threw his first pass for Oregon.
The two of them even have a common opponent under their belts this early in the season in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It would be far too easy (and honestly poor analysis) to look at the number of touchdown passes. But two stats that were telling for me are completion percentage and Yards Per Attempt. Mariota bested Mallett in both those areas: 81.3% to 61.5% completion percentage and 13.1 to 5.8 yards to pass attempt. Oh, and Mariota did that on his first start in this league on the road. Mallett had the luxury of getting the Bucs on his second start at home and still struggled.
If you think it's unfair to compare Mariota and Mallett, then fine. Let's compare him to the guy actually struggling like a rookie right now and that is Winston. Same scenario as above with Quarterback A and Quarterback B. Should Quarterback A look
every bit as terrible as Quarterback B? Absolutely not and to do so is frankly inexcusable. One guy is still an NFL veteran regardless of how people try to spin it.
Again, Mariota is of a different pedigree. Do I think Mallett will not or ever reach that level? It's not likely. But do I think at this point in time he should maybe be Andy Dalton? How about Nick Foles? Kirk Cousins? Yeah, I do. I don't see why that's such a major stretch, but apparently that's "nonsense" to some folks like Cak.
To anyone who thinks Mallett is going to show noticeable improvement over the course of the next few months, I'd like to see where the expectations are. Someone here said they'd like to see if he can reach the Eli-Tannehill-Flacco level (nytexan). Given what we've seen, I don't think that's going to happen. If you think they will be improvement then I'd like to try and exercise: Name me six starting quarterbacks you'd feel certain we'll be saying by the end of the year "I'd rather have Ryan Mallett over ______." (excluding injuries)
Because I'm struggling to name six.
Jesus.
