Week 9: Houston Texans @ New York Jets (Thursday Night Football)

Who do you think will win (Honest)

They should have left Bobby and Strausser in NY.

Time to be bold and make a huge change at the top of the offense if we don’t see major improvement against the Lions after this mini-bye. Bobby has this little extra time to get this crap on track, or I’m elevating J Johnson. This **** ain’t working. Period. Full stop.

Well, are you guys finally gonna admit we’re not as good as the record says we are? Or do you need anymore evidence?
Gotta get healthy and make a trade or two before I go here. I thought they would lose last night and I thought I would be reading this post coming from you. Said so before the game.

Jets must win game. Texans now face Detroit before going on bye. 6-4. We’ll see if they figure out why they can’t score after half… Slowick playcalling just never clicked this season, his calls put players in play from behind mindset instead of going nuclear.

Mixon is already carrying team, thought they could rest Nico, 2-2, very much question that strategy? So both Mixon & Collins need to stay healthy and push ceilings, while Slowick & offensive line (Patterson coming back LG) so while not out of Super Bowl discussion, it’s a much longer shot than any of us expected.
A lot depends on WA health and what Caserio does at the deadline.

Slowik can't fix this. He can call plays to get the ball out of Stroud's hand more quickly.

I dont think Slowick or Demeco are idiots. Maybe Slowick is not a great playcaller but hes not a drooling moron. He can see the same stuff us and the entire football world sees.

That said, im pretty sure they've addressed these things in some fashion. Maybe they dont have the knowledge or personnel to get things fixed but no one can convince me they havent at least tried.

I agree that Slowick cant fix this. Hes not the right guy for that job. Halfway through the season and the same issues still exists tells me they aren't capable.

And im not saying the season is over. Anything can happen on gameday and lots of teams win with broken units or big weaknesses. But i expect the offense to continue to be a big weakness this year.

If Slowik is demoted or let go during the season, Bill Lazor would probably take over play-calling

Slowik won't be fired this season or in the off season. His development of rookie Stroud bought his job security. And to be honest, his play calling last season was occasionally brilliant. Think of the comeback wins against Tampa Bay and Cincinnati.

That said, he needs to answer for why Kenyon Green had been allowed to remain a starter for so many games. Sure, Green's not the only problem on the O-line, but not benching him after game 2 has left our quarterback shell shocked. I can't remember the last time I've seen such a failure in decision making from a coaching staff.

I am sorry but I have to address the elephant in the room. This is just a cursed franchise. Has been from day one. Hell, the first Texan ever, Tony Boselli, never played a down for us. We were rolling when Schaub had that freak Lisfranc injury. We were rolling when Watson went down in his rookie season. And the one time this offense finally looked good this season, Nico gets injured on the TD. I blame Bud Adams. That MFer laid down the mother of all curses when he left the city of Houston. May you NOT rest in peace Bud.

Thank you for the comedic take on this Friday morning

I don’t know how you can say that with any seriousness. If you don’t have the time to throw the ball, and your main receivers are down, then you blame the quarterback?

With all due respect, that is a cheap shot.
Not a cheap shot. He has had his share of impressive passes, but there has been no consistency. Even when he has had adequate time to pass this season, there have been too many WTF decisions and significantly inaccurate passes.

Seems to be no rhythm out of Stroud this season I agree. I understand the protection is a big reason for it. They’ve gotta get him going and I think they attempted to with the pass heavy start this week. But the play calls aren’t working and neither is the execution.

Time to take this back to the 1990s and run it down their throats. Let CJ pass only when conditions are ripe for success. Keep his attempts and his hits taken down. Shorten the game by running the ball and playing good defense.. and not turning the ball over!

The lack of rhythm for Stroud is because he gets guys in his face almost as soon as his back foot hits the ground, the play caller is calling slow developing routes, and I have no doubt he is thinking too much now. He does't trust his line and he's in his head. His best attribute is his accuracy and this season he has been very inconsistent. I don't think he suddenly got less accurate. I think the line and play calling are direct issues.

Maybe it is Nick and Demeco that want Green to start. Do we really know if Slowick has the autonomy to make that decision?

We are still the best team in the AFC south. Tough road ahead though. Injuries are apart of the game but we seem to be suffering some critical ones at critical times. This is where true leadership will show and grow is in the struggle.

The run first and pass second game plan might work against the likes of Titans and Jags, but thats about it. We wont beat many teams if CJ is throwing for a buck fifty, even without turnovers.

That’s just who this team is with this OL. Save CJ’s heroics for February. He wont last putting on his cape every week and getting clobbered.

We were also the best team in the AFC south for many seasons with BOB. New players and coaches, but same old Texans.

Damn sure wish Nico, Stephon, Waj, and Harris were on the field tonight. We look like a depleted team without them. Hope we can heal up some guys after this one.
That is the saving grace for this team.
I think they will improve incrementally as each piece is added back to the lineup.
I knew this game was a trap game. Jets D is real and they got pressure on CJ all night

It simply depends. You adjust (run vs pass) based on what the defense is showing you. Ideally you want to impose the run in every game.

Been saying this about Strausser. 8 SACKS. You would think we would see a change after straight ass the past few weeks but no.

He is not releasing the ball when the back foot hits the ground like last year. He is double clutching and moving on then getting rolled. Either his receivers ain't getting the separation or he is doubting what he sees

Because of the actual pressure and now perceived pressure, his mechanics are inconsistent. Too often, he is throwing off balance, not stepping into his throws and leading to his inaccuracy. Also, the play calling isn't helping him. I would love to see the percentage of passes that are 3, 5 and 7 step drop backs. I'm not seeing too many plays where he has to get the ball out quickly. In fact, with all of these tight formations, I can't recall the last time I saw a slant.

When is the last time the Texans had a game plan to attack the middle of the field with TE's against the LB'ers or safeties?? majority of pass plays are outside the numbers or at them.

This 100%.

5 straight passing plays start of the game set the stage for Jets DL to pin their ears back and rush CJ destroying OL confidence. It just cascaded after that😡

Kenyon is much, much better in run blocking and Mixon is hot, why not establish run then mix in quick passes and ball control down field and take ownership in the trenches.

Texans should have put the Jets away early and kept punishing that DL. Our D played great early, then just wore down and started getting bad calls against them like the fix was in

:logo:

Chin up dude. They will get better with injured pieces being added back to the lineup
I'm not sure that's true. Behind this terrible offensive line the quarterback play has been mediocre more often than not this season. And we're nine games into the season. That is not a small sample. Going into the game Thursday, CJ was one of the most sacked quarterbacks in the league with 22. Now it's 30. He had been knocked down 29 times (more now, the new stats haven't come out yet) on top of the sacks and is the most hurried quarterback in the league. Defenses know they can blitz at will and they are.

All of that would be somewhat blunted if the line was waiting for some guys to come back from injury. But that damn unit is one of the healthiest units on the ******* team!

Opposing defenses have a huge amount of tape showing them how to ground the Texans passing game to a halt. Nico coming back isn't going to move the elephant out of the room. Barring some unexpected trade, the Texans are going to have to roll with that awful offensive line. Which is not a good forecast for CJ Stroud staying healthy this season.

I will say about Bobby, I don’t want to ever see an HB direct snap trick play again.
And in addition to everything I just wrote about the offensive line, Slowik is a terrible OC. He was graced with the element of surprise (a rookie quarterback lighting the league up) last year. He doesn't have that this year and apparently, he is incapable of countering what defenses are doing to his quarterback.

They're going to have to make a change in the offseason. I wish they could seamlessly do it sooner but doing it now might make things worse, if that's possible.

It’s only a matter of time until CJ is injured and loses time. This is on Nick first and foremost. Second it’s on DeMeco. Then Bobby, lastly Strausser. And of course the individual players…my thing is who drafted or signed the players. Back to the start —> see, Casserio, Nick.

Nicks arc is a roller coaster…started poor, went straight up…now he’s on a race to the bottom. His decisions on the line have proven to be a nightmare on elm street.

Ryans and Caserio make those decisions.

Nope, not cursed

Just had three incompetent GM's and a cheap owner who had a not Texans Worthy motto.

Example, Mixon would have never been a Texan under Bob McNair's ownership.

Agree with most of what you say but I absolutely think CJ missed some quality receivers in that game. It seemed pretty obvious to me
