Those championships make Houston relevant in spite of the sports world always counting Houston out. When the Rockets beat the Knicks the sports world was upset. They wanted the Knicks to win so bad. Thats the point I was making.
The Love Ya Blue Oilers put Houston on the pro sports map. Before that there was nothing. Yes, the Rockets titles were the 1st major sports titles for the city, and yes, that was big, but Houston wasn't even a blip on the radar when it came to pro sports before the late 70's Oilers.
The Oilers do nothing to make Houston relevant. Well there was that one record they hold for choking against the Bills. And Houston is one of the cities to see their team pack up and leave.
They're not relevant anymore, obviously. But they were. Like I said, Earl and Bum put the city on the map. And the Love Ya Blue phenomenon was just something you can't understand unless you lived through it.
The Texans winning a SB will make this town go nuts. But to be fair, it was pretty nuts for the Astros who have the bar set pretty high. And it was nuts for the Rockets judging by the scenes along Richmond Ave. This town gets behind a winner. Not so much when you're not winning, see Astros 2011-2013, see Texans pre-DeMeco. Can't speak about the Rockets as I no longer have interest in the NBA.
