Week 1: Texans vs Colts Gameday Thread

Those championships make Houston relevant in spite of the sports world always counting Houston out. When the Rockets beat the Knicks the sports world was upset. They wanted the Knicks to win so bad. Thats the point I was making.

The Love Ya Blue Oilers put Houston on the pro sports map. Before that there was nothing. Yes, the Rockets titles were the 1st major sports titles for the city, and yes, that was big, but Houston wasn't even a blip on the radar when it came to pro sports before the late 70's Oilers.

The Oilers do nothing to make Houston relevant. Well there was that one record they hold for choking against the Bills. And Houston is one of the cities to see their team pack up and leave.

They're not relevant anymore, obviously. But they were. Like I said, Earl and Bum put the city on the map. And the Love Ya Blue phenomenon was just something you can't understand unless you lived through it.

The Texans winning a SB will make this town go nuts. But to be fair, it was pretty nuts for the Astros who have the bar set pretty high. And it was nuts for the Rockets judging by the scenes along Richmond Ave. This town gets behind a winner. Not so much when you're not winning, see Astros 2011-2013, see Texans pre-DeMeco. Can't speak about the Rockets as I no longer have interest in the NBA.

Rockets interest has been pretty low since they traded Harden but finishing .500 last started to get them back with the young talent they have on the team now.

This was one of the things some mentioned earlier - the LB corps isn't the deepest group and they're going up against Jonathan Taylor and Anthony Richardson. Not the best draw for a season opener.
True. But i’d say that same Colts secondary had enough problems with Nico Collins in week 18. Now they have to deal with Tank and Diggs.

We’ll see which team can exploit the mismatch better.

It's difficult to understand the Colts looking at their secondary in the offseason and saying "We're good with this." The Texans WRs present a huge mismatch to the Colts CBs that couldn't cover Nico (16 catches for 341 yards in the 2 games). Now they also have to deal with Diggs and Dell? Lots of Stef, Nico, and Tank endzone dancing in the whatever dome (What's the name of this place?).

When you look up NBA Championships the Houston Rockets will show up. Twice.

When you look up NFL Championship the Houston Oilers are nowhere to be found.

I am not arguing who is more popular with fans. Houston and Texas is football country. Everyone knows that.

Had you been following the conversation that Sandman and I were having you will pick up on the context clues.

A key consideration is whether the Colts can limit the Texans' offense by controlling the clock. It seems likely that Steichen will aim to keep the Texans' offense off the field by pounding the ball against their defense. Ultimately, I believe the game will be decided by whether the Texans' defense can win that battle.

@sandman

It looks like we have angered the Luv Ya Boomers.
Not really...I was there and the Oilers were fun during the LYB era. Bud Adams....yeah, we hated him. When this team gets to the AFC championship I think I will think of them as equal. Also I think the fans were more into it back then. I was at the Monday night game against Miami and have never seen anything like it. The oilers had Crazy George the Blues Brothers running around. Mojo and the dog running out for the tee ..We might be more like Dallas fans now

The funny thing is Harris is a great coverage LB but still needs work in the run game. To'o To'o is a weak coverage backer but better than Harris against the run.

The Colts announced that they elevated K Spencer Shrader from the PS. As I posted in the Injury Thread, Gay's Questionable game status 1 week out of hernia surgery is very "questionable."
This could be a big one.

Playing without a reliable kicker can really hamstring a team. We saw what it was like when Kaimi went down.

Just looking at their practice squad kickers' stats and it seems like he's only good within 30 or so yards.

Their outside guys don’t scare me against plus WR’s, but Kenny Moore at nickel/slot is damn good. One of the best. I’m thinking that Diggs will be the guy in the slot most of the time, so that’s a very interesting matchup. If Diggs can do damage and get open…it’s a huge plus.

Strength of their D is interior Dline. That’s a huge key. Can our two guards and center handle these guys? If not, it’s going to be much tougher to win this game. They have to at least hold their own out there. The Colts LB core is better than ours as well especially with Harris out, but those tackles are nasty. That’s my key to the game.

Ryans knows this and will eat that interior up. Intermediate routes should weaken Colts inside rush. If Diggs and Metchie in slot, someone is getting loose. TEs can help.

This could be similar to the Longhorns versus Michigan today.

Project the Texans week 1 inactives!

M.J. Stewart
Nick Broeker
Jarrett Patterson
Robert Woods
Xavier Hutchinson
Jamal Hill
Dameon Pierce

Reasoning below:

Stewart injured. Broeker/Patterson OL, likely only carrying two backup OL game day. Swing interior OL and OT.

7 WRs means 2 probably inactive. Sims gets activated for returns ahead of Woods/Hutch.

Hill rookie LB odd one out.

Pierce because I believe Cam Akers is RB 2. Dare is ST ace and will be active. I believe Brooks has more ST utility along with FB role than Pierce/Akers. So that leaves one of those guys inactive. And I think it’s Pierce. Will probably be wrong but I think Akers should be RB2 like the majority of the forum.

So if Scruggs gets injured as he did last season, who takes over at Center?

Richardson has had a lackluster return in preseason from his A-C shoulder surgery. I believe we may see him underwhelm in today's game. With his style of play, if he is taken down to ground, he will eventually have a 20-25% chance of sustaining a recurrent injury early in this season.

He's never played a full season in his life. Don't think him playing a full year will magically happen in his second year in the pros all of a sudden

Even in college, he consistently had turnover issues. And prior to his injury last year, he generated only ~140 yds/game. As big as he is, he has not been that difficult to sack.

Dang it, I'm nervous. I can hardly wait for the game to start. Hoping for W on the road against a division opponent. That would be a great way to start the season.
I'm worried about the Colts running game and pass rush. If the OL can give Stroud time in the pocket, he should pick the Colts apart. The Texans LBs are going to HAVE to maintain discipline in the RPO game. If they bite too early, AR could have a field day.
