Updated Roster (Post-Draft)

Daniels was a college QB at South Florida. He started his freshman year under Jim Leavitt (who was fired after the season for a player altercation). He threw for just under 2,000 yards while also leading the team in rushing. He then started the next 3 years under Skip Holtz. He finished his career with 8,433 pass yards (52 TD, 39 INT) and 2,068 rush yards (25 TD).

He was drafted in the 7th round by Jim Harbaugh and the 49ers. He spent his rookie season as the 49ers practice squad QB before being waived. Seattle claimed him off waivers and he spent 2 years as a reserve QB. He switched to WR this offseason but has been on practice squad for the majority of the year.

If I had to guess, we are looking at him as more of a Wildcat QB / emergency QB instead of being a true backup. We may be looking to expand the Wildcat package down the stretch because of Weeden's lack of familiarity with the offensive system.
He is the type of player OB loves. DIVERSE!

Interesting.... a WR who can actually throw.
Trickeration anyone?

New season starts in two weeks. Not ideal, but a little time to install a new QB. A new offense.

DeWalt-Ondijo was a DE at Duke. Rotation player for majority of his career but started his senior season and finished with 7.5 TFL and 4.5 Sacks that year. For his career he had 14.5 TFL and 10.0 Sacks. At 6-4, 240 lbs he is an NFL tweener. At his Pro Day he ran a 4.65 forty (1.62 10-yard split) with 17 bench reps, a 35.5 inch vertical jump, 10'04" broad jump, a 4.38 short shuttle, and a 7.36 3-cone drill.

He went undrafted and was signed as an UDFA by the Eagles but got injured in camp and was eventually waived with an injury settlement. He has virtually no 3-4 experience as Duke plays a 4-man front and although Philadelphia runs a 3-4, he was injured during his camp run.

Can he play QB in an emergency?

I really don't know why the Texans insist on picking up players with unquestionable injury histories. Dewalt was "rotational" as much for his injuries as he was for his skill set. He was plagued throughout his college career with unrelenting ankle injuries/issues.............BOTH ankles. To no surprise, the reason why he was waived by the Eagles and received an injury settlement, was for yet another ankle injury he incurred during preseason.

Who cares - he's on the practice squad.

Eric Rogers, a Texans tryout, is a 6-3, 195 Calgary Stampeders all-star, led CFL with 1,448 receiving yards this season

Rogers played college football at California Lutheran University. He signed with the Cowboys in 2013 as an undrafted FA, but was cut during training camp. He then played a season in Arena Football League before Calgary of the CFL signed him. It is interesting to note that in the past month, he has gone through tryouts with the Eagles, 49ers, and Pats...........in fact, he has tried out for 14 NFL teams.

Given the number of tryouts, I am betting his contract in the CFL ends after this season. Likely will sign a Future's Contract with a team in January.

yeah but bright side we have his first injury settlement as a guideline when we need to settle with him; sort of speed process up you could say..

Something, besides his bean pole body, to keep in mind with Rogers......The CFL has a much wider field to maneuver in (and for the D to have to cover).............a fact that can be a major factor in allowing a WR timed with a 40 time of 4.40-4.61 to obtain good appearing stats that don't necessarily translate well into NFL potential.

Isn't there a clause in CFL contracts that they can leave at any time for the NFL?
I think that that's been a partial misconception. Troy Chapman for the most part is correct. A typical CFL contract includes an NFL option window that usually begins Jan. 1 and always ends Feb. 16. Players with such options in their contracts can sign with NFL teams during that window. If later released from the NFL, the player's rights revert to his previous CFL team.

Point being it doesn't matter if their contract is expiring, has 1 yr left or 5 yrs.

Texans work out former Bengals defensive tackle Devin Still, according to a source

I feel terrible for what his family has had to go through with his daughter. But, after showing some college potential, he has been simply ineffective as an NFL DT........not to mention that his career has been marked by significant injuries including a dislocated elbow and chronic nagging back issues. He was waived last year, then brought back to the Bengals PS only in a hospitable move to help his daughter during treatment, then waived, and signed again earlier this year............then finally cut at the end of preseason.

From the CBA:
Section 1. CFL Rule: No Club may sign any player who in the same year has been under contract to a Canadian Football League (“CFL”) club at the end of that CFL club’s season (regular season or postseason, whichever is applicable).

The same verbiage appears in the NFL by-laws as well.

Sounds like Doc's additional comments are correct, I am not well versed in this as I'd like to be...yet. Will research it.

Well that clearly isn't the whole situation as that limited tidbit would preclude signing a CFL player even if cut. As Doc alluded I recall situations of CFL players going to the NFL, not making it and still being under contract in the CFL. But I don't care enough to do more research.

That limited tidbit is the only mention of CFL players in the CBA & By-Laws.

CFL CBA 2014

Look at Article 36: National Football League

Section 36.01

........but then Section 36.02 somewhat confuses the issue for me, unless it means it otherwise leaves this issue to the player's agent to offer their own version of a path to NFL within the player's CFL contract.

Agent Brett Tessler (@TesslerSports) Tweeted #Texans are signing veteran OT Andrew McDonald to the active roster.

Undrafted, bounced around between practice squads and 53 man rosters (mostly practice squads) since 2012. Miami, Carolina, Seattle, Indy, Cleveland. Only active for 2 games in career (both with Seattle in 2014). Cut from Cleveland's practice squad in early Oct. of this year - on the couch since then.

Biggest claim to fame so far - being bullied by Richie Incognito while on Miami PS, and showing up in the Wells report (although not identified by name).

Note from memo from NFL today on updated important dates:

Feb 9 -- Beginning at 12 noon, New York time, NFL clubs may begin to sign players whose 2015 CFL contracts have expired. Players under contract to a CFL club for the 2016 season or who have an option for the 2016 season are not eligible to be signed.

Texans signing tackle Andrew McDonald with Duane Brown going to injured reserve
By Aaron Wilson on January 4, 2016 at 2:50 PM

The Houston Texans are signing veteran offensive tackle Andrew McDonald to their active roster with Pro Bowl alternate left tackle Duane Brown heading to injured reserve with a season-ending torn right quadriceps tendon, according to his agent, Brett Tessler.

McDonald spent time this season with the Cleveland Browns and San Diego Chargers this season.

He has previous stints with the Miami Dolphins, Carolina Panthers, Seattle Seahawks and the Indianapolis Colts.

McDonald, 27, is a 6-6, 310-pounder who went undrafted out of Indiana.

McDonald had surgery in 2014 to treat testicular cancer and recovered in time to go to training camp with the Panthers.

Leah's last treatment is Friday. I just signed a contract to get back to doing what I love. I would say this week is a good week! I told myself from day one with Leah's diagnosis I would give her my all and sacrifice my career because if I lost her to cancer I could never get her back but if I lost football, given the right opportunity, I could get it back. Thanks to the Texans for giving me that opportunity!
