HOUSTON – The Houston Texans have signed all seven members of the team’s 2015 draft class, it was announced today. CB Kevin Johnson (first round), LB Benardrick McKinney (second round), WR Jaelen Strong (third round), WR Keith Mumphery (fifth round), LB Reshard Cliett (sixth round), DT Christian Covington (sixth round) and RB Kenny Hilliard (seventh round) signed with the Texans today. Terms of their contracts were not disclosed.

Johnson was selected by the Texans with the 16th overall pick of the first round. He played in 47 career games at Wake Forest, starting the last 41 contests he appeared in for the Demon Deacons. His career pass breakups total ranks fourth in school history.

Houston traded up in the second round to select McKinney with the 43rd overall pick in the draft. He is one of the all-time great linebackers in Mississippi State history, becoming the program’s first first-team All-America linebacker since 1999. In 2014, McKinney started all 13 games and for the second straight year, was the Bulldogs’ top tackler, recording 71 with eight tackles for loss, 3.0 sacks, four passes defensed, three fumble recoveries and one forced fumble. The Texans moved up in the third round as well to draft Strong with the 70th overall pick. He saw action in 26 career games in two seasons at Arizona State, making 157 receptions for 2,287 receiving yards and 17 touchdowns. His career receptions total ranks fifth all-time in school history. In 2014, Strong tallied four All-America Awards including Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, CBSSports.com and ESPN.com. His 82 receptions that year are the third-most in a single-season in school history, while his 1,165 receiving yards placed him in a tie for fifth. Strong also added 10 touchdowns on the year.

Mumphery was drafted in the fifth round (175th overall) of the draft. As a three-year starter at flanker and four-year letterwinner at Michigan State, he recorded 88 catches for 1,348 yards (15.3 avg.) and seven touchdowns in 54 career games (26 starts). He is the first Rice interior defensive lineman drafted since Clenzie Pierson was taken by the Giants in the 11th round of the 1983 draft.

Hilliard was chosen with the Texans’ final pick in the seventh round (235th overall) of the draft. In four years at LSU, he played in 48 games (seven starts) and rushed for 1,547 yards and 27 touchdowns. His career touchdown total is tied for eighth in school history. It is funny to me that Duane Brown is our smallest offensive lineman other than our centers.

The myth of 'roster churn'
John Harris
A few months ago, a day or so after the start of the 2015 NFL free agency period, I was listening to a sports radio show and a caller made a comment as to the fact that a team couldn’t win a championship without continuity on its roster, coaching staff and organization. In particular, he opined that no team could be successful with so much upheaval on a roster. I remembered that call as the off-season continued and often wondered how accurate he was. At first glance, I didn’t think it was on point, but decided to put it to the test.

So, I compared the 2015 probable starting lineup for the Texans and the starting lineup in October 2013. Less than two short years ago, how much turnover actually has taken place in that short time

2015 Houston Texans PROBABLE Starting lineup (2013 starter)
QB - Ryan Mallett/Brian Hoyer(Matt Schaub)
RB - Arian Foster
FB - Jay Prosch (Greg Jones)
WR - DeAndre Hopkins
WR - Cecil Shorts/Jaelen Strong/Nate Washington (Andre Johnson)
TE - Garrett Graham (Owen Daniels)
LT - Duane Brown
LG - Xavier Su’a-Filo (Wade Smith)
C - Ben Jones (Chris Myers)
RG - Brandon Brooks
RT - Derek Newton

DE - JJ Watt
DT - Vince Wilfork (Earl Mitchell)
DE - Jared Crick (Antonio Smith)
OLB - Whitney Mercilus
ILB - Brian Cushing
ILB - Akeem Dent/Mike Mohamed/B. McKinney (Joe Mays)
OLB - Jadeveon Clowney (Brooks Reed)
CB - Johnathan Joseph
S - Rahim Moore (Ed Reed)
S - Eddie Pleasant/Stevie Brown (DJ Swearinger)
CB - Kareem Jackson

12 different starters (6 on offense, 6 on defense)

A little more than half of the starting lineup was turned over, with six each on offense and defense. Knowing the league turns rosters/lineups over frequently, I didn’t think that was significant but needed a comparison.

How does the Texans roster churn relate to the rest of the AFC South? Well, Indianapolis, the AFC South champs the past two years, has turned over ⅔ of their starting lineup in just under two years. The results for the three other AFC South teams are below.

2015 Indianapolis Colts PROBABLE Starting lineup (2013 starter)
...
14 different starters (7 on offense, 7 on defense)

2015 Jacksonville Jaguars PROBABLE Starting lineup (2013 starter)
...
15 different starters (9 on offense, 6 on defense)

2015 Tennessee Titans PROBABLE Starting lineup (2013 starter)
...
13 different starters (8 on offense, 5 on defense)

That’s right, 42 starting lineup changes in just under two years for the Colts, Jaguars and Titans in total. But, what about the last two year’s champions - the Patriots and the Seahawks? Glad you asked.

2015 New England Patriots PROBABLE Starting lineup (2013 starter)
...
10 different starters (4 on offense, 6 on defense)

2015 Seattle Seahawks PROBABLE Starting lineup (2013 starter)
...
9 different starters (six on offense, three on defense)

In all, it’s clear that change is inevitable in this league and it was interesting to look at how often teams have changed, even in less than two years time. Thinking back to that caller’s assertion, he wasn’t wrong from the standpoint that an organization thrives under continuity but it doesn’t stand in the way of winning and winning big.

Your oversight was switching the names of Garrett Graham and Owen Daniels, but that doesn't invalidate what you're trying to say. That caller was right—in some cases. In other words, he is right except when he's wrong.

You do understand I don't write or necessarily advocate the articles I post? That's what the little linky is for. ;)

Well it a sure seems a team with less turnover translates directly to better results so Texans have done a good job. One - retaining own free agents. Two - drafting well enough that most make roster. Three - despite changing head coach & staff, continuity remains intact despite upgrading needs via free agency.

Man, what a process to make cuts down to 53 man roster, or did they finally increase roster spots I certainly hope so? Best of luck to all as we start guesswork who makes Texan roster & practice squad.

Not sure if you are disagreeing or agreeing with me? Attached is a screenshot of the May 12th NFL transaction wire distributed daily. The screenshot is the area with James Rouse.

If a player is waived with the injury designation, and then clears waivers, the player returns back to the team on the injured reserve list. Players on the Reserve/Injured List that were waived do not count against the 90 player roster count.

There are two options after he clears waivers. One is a settlement/cut and one is IR/reserved. Unless he is not expected to heal, there's no reason to settle and cut him since he doesn't count against the roster and his cap hit is negligible.

But that is a decision that doesn't need to be made right away.

The player actually benefits because his football related injury expenses remain the obligation of the team.

No disagreement. I just put the listed transactions for the Texans from their official site. They probably have not updated their site yet to reflect that he cleared waivers and is on the injured reserve list. They're a bit slow sometimes.

Oh ok, understood.

Due to Rouse injuring his achilles, settlement is not likely IMO.

I agree since there is mutual interest in future healing and play and both are most likely with the rehab available as a Texan. But attitude can change everything though I've not heard anything but effusive praise of Rouse's character.

I wonder if the achilles he injured in mini-camp is the same one he injured in college? I believe he played 6 years in college, losing two seasons to injury (one being the achilles).

I hope not. But I suspect the percentages would be that it was. I'll have to wait and see what the Doc says.

Guess we were both wrong here. Here is what was listed on today's NFL transaction wire:

They must have come to the conclusion he was unlikely to ever return to the NFL because of the injury. I suspect the settlement includes continued costs associated with the injury.

It's disappointing to say the least.

...and scratch Clabo.
What does this mean? Just wishful comment? There's nothing posted on Roster Moves to indicate Clabo has been released. As much as I'd like to upgrade him, we are going into OTA's with extremely limited experience in our backup OL'men. He shouldn't be released without one of the young players actually winning the position.

Veteran tackle Tyson Clabo saw action in all 16 games as a reserve for the Texans last year after being signed during training camp, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be playing any for the team this year.

The Texans announced Clabo’s release on Thursday. He was set to make $900,000 this season in the second year of the two-year deal he signed last summer.

Link

Interesting. Unless I'm out of date, that leaves only one experienced OT backup, Will Yeatman. Jeff Adams has a few plays in two games. He's the next most experienced. Then we have rookies.

And we couldn't throw a 6th or 7th at Collins? One injury to any starter on our OL and we are screwed. Imagine if Brown were to go down. SMH!!!!!

Well we get 1.22 million cap space dumping Clabo; has to be someone out there who will play for that. We should be at about $7 m under for top 51.

~$7.503m by my count with the team at 89 contracts. $1.22m in savings, but add back in another $510k player. So the net gain is $710k.

WHY $510K INSTEAD OF THE $435K MINIMUM?

After re-reading the post, I think I understand that as the previously 52nd player's salary for the top 51.

Correct, the 52nd player for the Texans is a $510k player so he moves inside the Top 51. Pro-rated bonus money is included for every player regardless if they are inside the Top 51 or not; so it makes the math pretty easy. Sometimes I forget though...lol.

Edited my earlier posts, updating numbers late at night caused some errors again.

Mike Meltser: Did The Texans Fill Their Roster Holes On Offense?

In January, I published a post previewing the holes that the Texans brain trust would have to fill on the roster. Four months later, how does that analysis look? How did Rick Smith and Bill O’Brien go about filling those holes? With the moves that were made, how confident are we that the team can improve on a 9-7 season?

QB – Ryan Mallett or Ryan Fitzpatrick, Tom Savage

This position is a whole chapter unto itself, and the amount of holes isn’t as relevant as the realization that this team lacks a franchise quarterback. I believe the Texans will re-sign Mallett to a reasonable short term contract. As a fourth-round pick, Savage returns for a second and critical season. My guess is that Bill O’Brien drafts or brings in another QB as the 3rd stringer for 2015

Verdict: the Texans did exactly that with Mallett, and added Brian Hoyer to essentially fill the “Fitzpatrick role” on the roster. I anticipated that the team might draft a developmental quarterback, but they went a little differently. My guess is that O’Brien wasn’t thrilled with the QBs in the draft past Marcus Mariota.

RB – Arian Foster, Alfred Blue

By virtue of his tremendous (when healthy) season, Foster is a lock to return for 2015. He was the second best player on this team. The Texans need Foster to compete, given the current QB situation.

The most interesting question here is how Rick Smith and O’Brien approach the future of this position. There are a lot of talented RBs in the 2015 Draft, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Texans took one in the first 3 rounds.

Conclusion = 1 hole

Verdict: a running back was selected, but Kenny Hilliard went in the 7th round. The Texans also signed veteran Chris Polk, a power back, after he was allowed to leave the Eagles in April. I don’t believe that any of the RBs on the roster are a threat to Arian, but at least Alfred Blue, Jonathan Grimes, Hilliard, and Polk will be able to compete among themselves.

WR – DeAndre Hopkins (Andre Johnson)

Now here is a real position of intrigue. Hopkins is the only lock to be on the roster in 2015, given the uncertainty over Andre Johnson’s contract. Andre may or may not be willing to take a pay-cut. 85 receptions, 936 yards, and 3 TDs isn’t cutting it for a cap hit of more than $16M.

My early guess is that a deal is worked out with Andre at a more reasonable rate.

Beyond the top two, this team is in need of a full revamp. O’Brien seems to place a premium on receivers being able to beat man to man coverage, and I don’t know if much of that exists on this roster. The Texans finally have some salary cap space, and I could see the front office signing a proven veteran and/or drafting multiple receivers in April, perhaps early.

Conclusion = 3 holes

I was wrong with my prediction on retaining Andre, but the overall tone of those paragraphs reflect exactly what ensued over the next few months. The team lost Johnson and traded DeVier Posey, while they signed Cecil Shorts, Nate Washington, re-signed Damaris Johnson and drafted Jaelen Strong and Keith Mumphery.

The Texans did overhaul this position, and they did fill the three holes I felt they had in January. Now the question is: will they actually get more production out of the receivers?

TE – CJ Fiedorowicz (Garrett Graham, Ryan Griffin)

I don’t know what the plan is here. It’s easy to jettison Graham and Griffin on paper, but that creates two open roster spots. Do you draft another TE? If so, how early? Here is the list of free agent tight ends for 2015. I will be very intrigued to see what happens in this area.

Conclusion = 1 hole (split the difference between Graham and Griffin)

Verdict: Houston opted to stay as-is at tight end, retaining all three of the primary players on the depth chart. Reading between the lines, it seems that O’Brien blames the horrific tight end production more on Fitzpatrick than the TEs themselves.

T – Duane Brown (Derek Newton)

Brown will continue as the franchise LT, but the question is what Smith and O’Brien choose to do on the right side. Newton had a quality season but is now a free agent. Does Houston want to pay market rate for a player that has taken 4 arduous years to develop? Losing Newton creates the kind of hole that you normally fill with a legitimate contract for a free agent, or a relatively early draft pick.

In terms of depth, right now the likes of Will Yeatman, Jeff Adams, and Tyson Clabo are on the roster as the backups.

Conclusion = 1 hole

Verdict: the Texans did indeed pay market rate for Newton, with their mini-splurge on pending free agents right around the opening of the free agency period. For him to fulfill that contract, he has to play at the level he progressed to in 2014.

Clabo was recently released, as Yeatman and Adams are both younger and have far more upside.

C/G – Brandon Brooks, Xavier Su’a-Filo, Ben Jones

Those three players are on rookie contracts, and I could see all three starting in week one. Brooks had another quality season at RG and is one of the building blocks of this team.

Chris Myers did not necessarily play up to his usual standards in 2014, but the bigger issue is his cap number. Myers carries a $6M base salary into 2015, and the team can save that same $6M number by releasing him. Jones has been a mediocre-at-best LG, but he was a 4 year starting center at Georgia. That could be an option.

Conclusion = 1 hole

Verdict: Myers did end up being released, and I think the big gap between his cap number and dead money figure became too enticing for the Texans. I did write that one hole existed, and the team bucked recent trends by not selecting a single offensive lineman in the draft.

With the trade ups for both Benardrick McKinney and Jaelen Strong, the Texans’ draft capital fell to only 7 picks, so some positions had to be sacrificed.

Questions at these spots: Can Su’a-Filo improve and hold down left guard? Can Jones become a solid starting center at the NFL level? Who is going to provide depth at these spots? Cody White is returning from an Achilles tendon injury, and Greg Mancz is considered an intriguing prospect as a UDFA.

Overall thoughts: The most notable change on offense was the decision to release Andre Johnson, the most accomplished player in franchise history. O’Brien is banking on a combination of Shorts, Strong, and the smaller investments in Washington and Mumphery to replace Andre. I understand that overall philosophy, but are the Texans better right now at WR? That remains to be seen.

I would have loved to have added a possible long-term solution at QB this offseason, but Houston was selecting 16th overall in a draft containing only 2 blue chip quarterback prospects, with little depth beyond that. I’m personally not thrilled with the acquisition of Brian Hoyer, because of his lack of upside, but it’s counter-balanced with the very cheap re-signing of Ryan Mallett.

I am more comfortable with Su’a-Filo making a big jump in his 2nd season than most seem to be, and I’m also anxious to see how Jones plays at his natural position. If those two play well, this could be a very good offensive line.
