The New New JaDeveon Clowney Thread

Clowney is getting oh so close to a reality I don't think he's prepared to handle. If Clowney skips 2020....there's no paychecks coming but the bills, they come like clockwork. If there is in fact a cap decrease for 2021 and Clowney hasn't played any football in roughly 18 or so months, he's going to be looking square in the eyes of a veteran minimum contract with incentives.

Clowney might be in a position to grab a 1 year 5-8M dollar contract with incentives if he gets off his high horse, realizes the situation, and signs with a team that offers him the best opportunity to put his skills on display for crunch time. Still have no idea as to why he turned down the Browns. His opportunity to play alongside Garrett could've done as much for hm as playing along side Watt for a season. Browns are definitely in a tougher division so if his sole concern is a playoff contender.....the Texans might be his best shot.
All these athletes are about to get a rude awakening financially.

The NFL doesn't think he's anywhere near worth what he wants to get paid and for the length he wants to get paid.
OB's trades are starting to not look quite as bad as they did before. Clearly no one around the league was going to give up much compensation for him. Even Seattle played hard ball with him when people thought that he'd be a for sure extension over there. Hopkins trade got poor compensation back, but we're seeing now that he was a lot more of a headache than what many originally realized and he seems like he wants to be a political activist more than a football player these days. OB might be better off without both.

As I mentioned when discussing the supposed Mahomes mega deal, the magnitude of a high profile agent contract for his high profile players is important to his reputation. While Clowney's value is apparently sinking, so is Bus Cook's............no doubt embarrassing for both of them.

Raiders offer Jadeveon Clowney new contract worth less than offers from multiple teams, per report
A new suitor has entered the fray for the NFL's most coveted free agent

They only have 7.9M left on their in their kitty.....it'd be nice to see the actual offer.

Saw a link today that alleges Browns have offered JD a one year $15 million contract. He should grab it with both hands.
Cleveland Browns reportedly renegotiate defensive end Olivier Vernon contract to increase GTD $ in signing bonus, low base salary and others to lower his cap hit. Probably takes Browns out of Clowney market.

I remember the game the Texans played against Oakland in Mex City a few years ago which ESPN carried and Chucky was profuse in his praise and characterization of Clowneys play vs the Raidersve , and yea JDC did have a real good game that night in Mexcio.
Anyway in retrospect it looks like Grudens commentary about Clowney that night was sincere.

Browns appear to be out of the bidding for Jadeveon Clowney
Posted by Michael David Smith on July 8, 2020, 10:44 AM EDT

It appears we can cross the Browns off the list of teams interested in free agent Jadeveon Clowney.

After the Browns agreed to a renegotiated contract with Olivier Vernon, a league source told PFT that Cleveland is unlikely to continue pursuing Clowney, whom they had previously shown interest in signing.

Under Vernon’s old contract he was set to make $15.25 million, but it was non-guaranteed, meaning that the Browns could have cut Vernon upon signing Clowney. Vernon agreed to take a pay cut, but now $10.75 million of his 2020 pay is guaranteed, so there’s no doubt he’s going to make the roster. That probably doesn’t leave any room for Clowney.

It’s possible that the Browns wanted Clowney but his price was too high. It’s also possible that the Browns were expressing interest in Clowney primarily because they wanted to squeeze Vernon into taking a pay cut.

Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times reported the "odds [are] likely increasing he plays another year in Seattle with every other option that falls through."

The team could offer Clowney a one-year deal, which would allow him to test free agency next season, though it wouldn't reach the $15-16 million annual salary the Seahawks initially offered.

With the Browns, Raiders, and probably the Seahawks off the list.....the Texans could move themselves onto the list if they so chose. Before anyone trashes this possibility, Clowney would be an asset on the DL for 2020. If he stays healthy for a full season, it could a major benefit to the defense. I still feel very strongly that if the Texans wanted to get the best out of having Watt and Clowney as DE's....then they must go to a 4 man front. This could free the Texans up to move McKinney for a fairly decent (RD2) draft pick. I'd like to see Greenard be a pure pass rushing LB who's in on most passing situations with the freedom to find the best opportunity for a mismatch. The only hope for this defense, get pressure on the QB and hit him enough that he hears footsteps. Again, I feel like Clowney would be a big plus on this DL!!!

Clayton: The big question now with Jadeveon Clowney is when
BY JOHN CLAYTON
JULY 8, 2020 AT 1:34 PM

The wait continues for former Seahawks defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, and the wait is costing him money.

On Tuesday, Clowney lost the chance to go to Cleveland. The Browns redid the contract of defensive end Olivier Vernon. He took more than a $4 million pay cut to get a one-year, $11 million deal that is completely guaranteed. With Vernon locked up for the season and the team also working on a contract extension for defensive end Myles Garrett, there is no job opening for Clowney in Cleveland.

What’s interesting is what the Browns did. At the start of free agency, they made an offer to Clowney. It was believed to be in the $17 million a year range. Clowney, who wanted more than $22 million, said no. When he lowered his demands to $17 million, the Browns weren’t there. There are reports in the last month that they were offering $12 million to Clowney. Nothing happened. And if the Browns had signed Clowney, they would have needed to cut Vernon.

For Vernon to sign for $11 million, that tells me Clowney’s market value is now down to $10 million or less on a one-year deal.

The Las Vegas Raiders are interested but their offer was considered to be the lowest of the small list of teams trying to sign him.

The Tennessee Titans remain interested but I doubt they would offer him more than the one-year, $9.5 million contract they signed Vic Beasley to earlier this offseason.

The Seahawks still have a chance to get him, but the question is when. I believe if Clowney understands he’s going to make less than half of what he values himself, he might not risk going into a training camp. He told Josina Anderson last week he wants to get a deal before the start of the season.

Nothing will happen on the Clowney front until the league allows players to make visits and for team doctors to conduct physicals. That might not be until the start of training camp. Florida, Texas, Arizona, California, Georgia and other big states are spiking with positive COVID-19 tests. Titans general manager Jon Robinson said Tuesday they would need to have a physical for Clowney before doing anything.

Cowboys have 'no interest' in Jamal Adams trade or signing Jadeveon Clowney
Jesse Reed, Sportsnaut 3 hrs ago
http://a.msn.com/02/en-us/BB16GaDh?ocid=sf
The Dallas Cowboys have been linked to Jamal Adams, who wants a trade, and free agent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. However, the franchise reportedly won’t be pursuing either defensive superstar.

The Dallas Cowboys are a desired destination for two premiere defensive stars, and yet owner Jerry Jones is either a little trigger shy or cash strapped.

New York Jets safety Jamal Adams is dissatisfied with how contract extension talks have not taken place with his current team. He’s made it clear through social media and an official request to seek a trade that he wants out.

He’s also made his preferred destination known, with the Cowboys being the team he wishes to join.

However, Clarence E. Hill Jr. of the Forth Worth Star-Telegram reported Monday that “a source said there has been no talk and no interest in making a move for New York Jets safety Jamal Adams.”

This falls in line with previous reports indicating the Cowboys just cannot afford to make such a move.

Jadeveon Clowney has also listed the Cowboys as a team he’d like to sign with in free agency.
However, per Hill, that’s also not in the cards for Dallas:

“The source said the team has no interest in pursuing Seattle Seahawks free agent defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who has reportedly listed the Cowboys as a preferred destination. Clowney is too expensive with offers on the table of $15 million annually or more.”

Looks like at one time or other, Clowney has been mentioned in association with a heck of a lot of teams............his agent's PR machine seems to be working overtime.

*********************************************************

CLNS’ Evan Lazar believes that Clowney signing a deal with the Patriots will be perfect for him because he’ll get a chance to prove what he’s worth again, similar to what Cam Newton is doing.

Here’s what he said:
“Before you tell me to stop dreaming, hear me out. According to some reports, Clowney is looking for a top-of-market deal worth close to $18 million. But he is still unsigned and is starting to give off Cam Newton vibes as someone that might need a “prove it” year to reset his value. Last season, Clowney only managed three sacks in Seattle, a sticking point for many teams in negotiations, and hasn’t developed into the pass rusher that evaluators expected. According to Pro Football Focus, he has never topped 64 quarterback pressures in a season, and the highest pass-rush grade of his career was 79.7.

After Jamal Adams trade, Seahawks likely out on Jadeveon Clowney
Grey Papke, Larry Brown Sports 3 hrs ago

View attachment 6433The Seattle Seahawks’ trade for Jamal Adams will have significant ramifications around the league, and it will likely matter to one free agent in particular.

Pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney remains on the market, and he’s been heavily linked to a return to the Seahawks. In fact, it was noted recently that the longer things go and the more teams drop out as suitors, the more likely it was that Clowney would end up back in Seattle.

That appears to be off the table now. According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Seahawks’ deal for Adams “all but closes [the] book” on Clowney’s return.

The Seahawks were already tight on cap space; and while the Adams trade doesn’t hurt them in 2020, it seems likely they’ll try to extend the safety at some point. That won’t be a cheap deal. The Seahawks would probably have to get creative to bring Clowney back for one year, and multiple years seem off the table at this point.

Clowney reportedly has an offer from another team out west. Unless something develops during training camp, that may be his only realistic possibility at this point.

****************************************
With the "other remaining team" being the Raiders...........good luck with that..........they have less than $8 million to work with................Bet that early Texans $18 million dollar multi-year offer by Brian Gaine looks dang good about now.................

I still think it would be beneficial for the Texans defense to add Clowney for the 2020 season. With the Seahawks and Browns out of the running.....Texans could be in the drivers seat as for the financial side of signing Clowney.

Never going to happen. There is good reason why Clowney is playing solitaire............and far from the most important is financial. The Texans are being smart staying far far away from adding Clowney to the roster. The Seahawks were in the best position to know the exact nature of his body's condition (and gained negative information later), and certainly had the funds..........yet (contrary to an early report) they never offered him a multi-year deal. At one point in time, body parts begin falling off.....and with it goes an already questionable performance. Fool me once, shame on you..............fool me twice.........

In the last couple of days, Michael Thomas has repeatedly told the media (numerous recent articles) that he is pushing the Saints to sign Clowney. If you've ever heard him speak, you quickly realize he isn't an Mensa English wizard. With his latest push, it is obvious that he isn't much of a math wizard either. Even if the 2021 salary cap is not anywhere around the originally projected $175 million and closer to $200, the Saints are in big trouble and would still be around a negative $41 million...........second worse cap situation in the NFL. As for 2020, the Saints are already at $8 million cap space for their top 51, but a projected negative $14 million for their top 53.

Maybe Thomas will donate his 2020 $5 million salary/bonus to the cause........or maybe his $16.8 2021 salary/bonus.......:chef:

& how does that Seahawks FO look now after they pretty much gave up the same amount of capital to get Jamal Adams that the Texans FO was supposedly stupid for giving up to bring in Tunsil back in 2018......if you look at it, they may have actually given up more..Their fans are pissed over there right now.

just goes to show the disconnect fans and the media have from that of NFL FO’s. 1st rounders are tremendously overvalued by fans & the media.

I don't think there's much of a comparison between the two transactions because 300+ pounders with Tunsils feet don't come along that frequently while 4.55 DBs are anything but rare and unusual creatures to see in an NFL Draft.

Lol, so all Jamal Adams play amounts to is his 40 time?
And Adams' strong suit is playing up close and blitzing........he's nowhere close to a lock down safety in coverage. Is that what you want to break the bank for? His last 6 games were very mundane...........almost journeyman-like, while missing 2 games to an ankle injury in the middle of that period of games. This could turn out to be an even worse trade than noted by its critics.

Jets got an amazing return for Adams. Miami got an amazing return for Tunsil. Texans got squat for Clowney and Hopkins. Clowney was a much hotter commodity after his 2017 season. If Texans had that many questions concerning giving him an extension.....then they should've been willing to move him. The Adams trade should require the McNair's and OB to wear "DUNCE" hats for the entire season based on the return they got Hopkins.

If he was a 4.35 guy he'd be a substantially more valuable corner.
And O'Briens deal is looking better all of the time.
I'm not suggesting Adams is worth the haul the Jets got for him.. just that he's far more valuable than the 'anything but rare 4.55 DB' you boiled his game down to.

I believe there was disagreement in the FO about Clowney's value. Gaine wanted to keep him (Romeo probably did as well), O'Brien didn't.

By the time Gaines was out of the way & O'Brien was in control the timing was all screwed up. & BO'bs approach put him between a rock & a hard place.

Well for starters, Clowney was traded after the 2018 season, not 2017. His numbers for both those years were damn near identical though however still nothing that screamed for the type of money he was repoprtedly asking for. But c'mon man, after seeing so many teams bow out for his services now.....so many pass rush needy teams, I think its fair to say that his "hot commodity" status was being overplayed then as you are still overplaying it now. What you need to ask yourself is whether Mack or Donald....the guys he fashions himself in the same class as....whether they'd have a nice long term deal by now or not...& i think the answer to that is a resounding yes.

So sure, maybe we could've gotten a little bit more back for him then......maybe. But you can't blame a large portion of what's going on with him on 1 terrible season in Seattle. I think its pretty obvious now that what we did get was about the max & what's going on with him now shows that. The market he & you thought was there for his services isn't there & as strong as y'all thought. The book is out on him.

Who knows this might be a turning point for his career. Maybe it forces him to realize that the league is no longer buying into his hype anymore. Maybe he develops a massive chip on his shoulder & sets the league on fire next year for whomever winds up picking him up. Either way, he ain't getting anything close to the money he thought he was gonna be getting when he was shipped outta here...at least not next year he ain't.

I believe 2017 and a few seasons since then, I've been behind gutting the roster and starting over. Hail, I even projected OB getting a clean-sheet start-over by giving him enough draft picks to build this roster to his expectations. But, to do something so extreme....the entire FO and coaching staff would have to go. New FO and HC would be on the 5 year clock and essentially following the Buiness 101 manual's 5 year plan.

Years 1-3: Building towards desired objective. That would be through the draft and inexpensive FA signings.

Year 3: Ownership assessment of meeting or exceeding 3 year objectives. That could be measured by team record and advancement of players overall within the given system. If there are no gains....like any business, they should prepare to shut down. An NFL wouldn't do this but the team owner should be prepared to fire the HC and/or GM before additional losses begin to pile up.

Year 4: If the blocks are in place from years 1-3, now is the time to start expanding your business or in the case of an NFL team, signing their upcoming FA's or players that have proved their value. They could add solid plug-n-play veteran FA's at this time b/c the objective now should be solid and consistent runs in the playoffs going forward.

Year 5: Total assessment of the entire program and the objectives being met. You either maintain with an expected amount of growth expected year to year or season to season. Can the team remain viable with salary cap restrictions. Is the HC and his staff still capable of coaching up rookies and FA signings. Is the scouting department capable of finding the gems in the draft from a deeper position in each round.

In my opinion, the GM(s) and OB and his staff have never been held to this type of measurement. If he had been responsible, OB would've been out by year 3. I just don't see OB as the man who's going to lead this team to a Super Bowl victory based on his prior 6 years results.

Dom Capers and Charlie Casserly are the only two HC/GM to ever be held to that level of accountability, and it was well deserved for both of them. Having a rookie didn't help matters, though. PR being at least as important as the product on the field.

Could Clowney's career be over before he ever gets an offer for a big contract? Teams just don't seem interested in giving him what he appears to think he's worth.
Maybe it's not that he thinks he's worth that, but that's what it's going to cost to get him to play one mo'gin.

If he's in a situation where he understands the long term implications, maybe he doesn't want to risk his longterm health unless it's "worth" it.

Clowney's Propensity for Penalties a Potential Problem for Titans

David Boclair
Aug 9, 2020

Without question, Jadeveon Clowney will add a lot to the Tennessee Titans. If he decides to sign with them, that is. Then again, the same will be true if he goes to another team.

There is the athleticism. The speed. The playmaking ability. All attributes common among players taken first overall in the draft.

There are also the penalties. That’s right, penalties.

In each of the last three seasons, Clowney has been the NFL’s most penalized player on defense and one of the most penalized in the game – period (regular season and playoff games combined). All told, over that span, he has been flagged 39 times for seven different violations. The majority of them have been attempts to anticipate or beat the snap that cost his defense five yards.

The Titans have confirmed their interest in the free agent defensive end, who is the biggest name still available in 2020 and have been mentioned as a possible destination for him throughout the offseason.

However, in two seasons as head coach Mike Vrabel has preached discipline with obvious success. In 2018, Tennessee’s 82 penalties and 727 penalty yards against were the fewest in the league (both were also franchise records). Last year the Titans again were in the top 10 for least penalized clubs with 99 flags that 932 yards.

During that time, opponents have been penalized 64 times more than Tennessee. That is an average of two per game.

“It’s my charge to make sure that we’re a fundamental football team, that we’re using the proper fundamentals so that we avoid penalties during the play,” Vrabel said earlier this offseason. “But it also allows us to do our job because the talent level is so close week in and week out, that technique sometimes is going to be the determining factor in whether somebody does their job, or somebody has an advantage.”

Which brings us back to Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick in 2014 and a three-time Pro Bowler who has been ranked among the NFL’s top 100 players four years running. He is No. 41 on this year’s list.

Over the past three seasons, the first of which (2017) was with Vrabel as his defensive coordinator in Houston, Clowney has been called for neutral zone infractions 16 times, offsides 11 times, roughing the passer five, holding three, face mask twice and encroachment and taunting once each (source: NFLPenalties.com). One holding call was declined. All of the rest were accepted.

Clowney cost the Seattle Seahawks yards 12 times in 2019, two more than the next most-penalized defensive player, Tampa Bay linebacker Shaquil Barrett. By himself, he accounted for 9.52 percent of all the penalties marked off against Seattle. Three of the flags against him came in the divisional playoff loss to Green Bay.

In 2018, his last season with Houston, he was responsible for 12.39 percent of penalties against the Texans when he was flagged 14 times. He ranked second overall in the league that year and again was called for at least two more penalties than any other player on defense.

In 2017, he tied for second overall in the NFL with 13 violations that were 10.48 percent of Houston’s total.

Clowney has been the NFL’s most penalized player on defense and one of the most penalized in the game
Clowney is full of raw physical potential, but clearly he lacks the mental discipline to be one of the game's greats. This stat alone reveals that basic truth.

I've got to give O'Brien some props on this decision. Maybe Clowney could have helped that defense last year, but an argument could be made that he could have hurt more than he helped, too. Especially being the most penalized defensive player in the game.
