The Johnny "Football" Manziel NFL thread

Texans QB board was Bortles, Garopollo, Savage.

The discussion to consider trading back into the end of the 1st to draft a QB was more driven by the extra 5th year of contract control you have with first round draft picks.

O'Brien didn't see JG as a prospect worth it at that point (and neither did anyone else in the league.)

Had OB coveted JG they would have traded back into the 2nd ahead of NE, because 1) he knew BB had to draft a backup, 2) NE had no 3rd round pick, and 3) if OB thought JG was a propect who could fit his system BB would think the same.

Remember, O'Brien's philosophy on QBs is this: If there are say, 12 capabilities/traits/skills you require in your QB, the guy you choose better pretty much meet every one of them.

Just curious, is this something you Know or just believe?

How far would Bortles have had to drop for them to attempt to trade?

Not to complain, but you say "Remember" as if to say we were told this before...

Where we told this before?

Again, not to complain, but why would New England "have" to draft a back-up? They just signed Brady until he is 40... surely they could have found a Free Agent like McCoy, Stanton, or Fitzpatrick to be their back up & they can worry about drafting a possible starter next year or the year after.

More than one source, same exact info. OB did not tell me this himself, so I don't know it.
How far would Bortles have had to drop for them to attempt to trade?
It never came into play.
Not to complain, but you say "Remember" as if to say we were told this before... Where we told this before?
I've listened to every interview and watched every presser OB has done since coming to Houston, and gone back for for what I could find before he came here from a multitude of sources most public, a few private. He has made that statement on at least one and I'm pretty sure more than one occasion, but I didn't memorize the dates.
Again, not to complain, but why would New England "have" to draft a back-up?
But BB did not sign a FA QB before the draft, and WC guys like McCoy aren't in the conversation for that offense. Pats planned on getting some value for Mallett predraft, but Texans didn't budge.

There was an open line during the draft, and Texans still never went off their offer. Nobody past JG could be leveraged for the Mallett trade. I have one source who says BB drafted Graopollo to force the Texan's hand into meeting their demand for Mallett -- I don't have a follow up source for that, and it seems a bit far-fetched to me. I do think it was a test of wills and O'Brien was not going to set the example of folding in his first public deal, especially against BB who he knows as well as anybody.

But Mallett was leaving... either before or after 2014. For something or nothing. BB needed a QB to groom for a year to backup Brady. Had JG developed an Achilles Heel, BB would have had to settle on a compromise veteran.

Pats are a playoff team. Gotta have a backup plan if you're 9-3 and somebody takes out one of Tom's knees. (See Matt Cassel, 2008)

Johnny Manziel said in February that if the Houston Texans passed on him with the No. 1 overall pick it would be "the worst decision they've ever made."

Of course, the Texans did pass on the former Texas A&M star, instead picking South Carolina phenom Jadeveon Clowney. Fast forward nine months and Manziel's Cleveland Browns are prepared to host the Texans. Barring an injury to Brian Hoyer, Manziel is unlikely to get a chance to make Houston regret its decision.

"Obviously, I have a chip on my shoulder for any team that passed me, not just the Texans," Manziel said this week, according to Northeast Ohio Media Group. "I think when my time comes, and I have a chance to play and show what I'm made of in this league, hopefully, I do make some people regret not taking me."

Had the Texans drafted Manziel, there's a good chance he'd be the team's starting quarterback right now. Ryan Fitzpatrick couldn't hold onto the job, and now Ryan Mallett gets his first career start on Sunday.

"It could've been (me starting for Houston), but at the same time, you're looking at the big picture like that and saying that there's a lot of couldas, shouldas, wouldas in that equation," Manziel said.
Or not.

If the dude's talent level could match his arrogance, then he might be okay as an NFL QB one day.

But, his lack of basic fundamentals regarding learning playbooks and pre-snap reads leads me to believe that he's just a watered-down version of VY without the national championship pedigree.

Pitiful.....just pitiful........what next?

Is It Time for the Cleveland Browns to Start Johnny Manziel?
On the outset, it appears that everything is going to plan for the Browns and Hoyer. It that appears Hoyer is playing well enough for the Browns to stay on course for a playoff spot. It appears that the Browns won't have any reason to start Manziel until his second season. It even appears that Hoyer could cause the Browns some problems in deciding who is their quarterback moving forward after this season.

Yet, when you look closer at what Hoyer has done this season, it makes you wonder if the Browns would be better off getting Manziel onto the field sooner rather than later.

To go along with Hoyer's impressive touchdown-to-interception ratio and the Browns' victories, the quarterback has also only completed 55.7 percent of his passes in an offensive system that should aid his completion percentage. Part of that has been poor wide receiver play, but most of it has been Hoyer's own inaccuracy.

While completing a very low percent of his passes, Hoyer is also not throwing for huge yardage. He is averaging just...

Fahey stirring a reasoned argument, at least.

Making this about Cleveland's "QB of the future" is the only thing that makes this a difficult situation. IMO, it should be about Hoyer's valuation as a starting QB. I don't & did not expect him to put up Brady/Manning type numbers.

But Cleveland has been looking for a QB for a long time & Manziel is the second first rounder they drafted for the position in the last five years.

If it were me, I'd try to sign Hoyer for a reasonable amount. $5~$7 million/yr. With a big roster bonus for 2016, which he'll earn by playing well enough to keep the Browns in contention for another season.

"Wasting" a first round pick on a QB isn't even part of the conversation. They've already wasted a first round pick trying to make Weeden the man, who's to say JFF would do any better?

& if JFF is the next Tom Brady, or Tony Romo, or Colin Kaepernick, or Aaron Rodgers, we'll see if he can handle being #2 for another year. If he can't handle that situation as well as they did (being ready to play when their number is finally called), he won't be the next Aaron Rodgers (et al) on the field either.

The only way Cleveland can screw this up is by over-valuing Hoyer & marrying him with a stupid contract. They should be willing to let him go if some other team runs up the "price"

Police Report: Johnny Manziel Involved In Massive Fight Late Friday Night at The 9 in Downtown Cleveland
An eager Cleveland Browns fan sparked a massive fight at The 9 when he approached Johnny Manziel and his "entourage" late Friday night, according to a police report obtained today by Scene.

Cleveland police were called to the apartment's lobby at 2:36 a.m. for a report of a "riot" involving 20 men and two security guards.

The alleged victim, 33-year-old Sandusky resident Chris Gonos, reported to police that he and his girlfriend spotted Manziel while waiting for an elevator at the high-end apartment complex, where many Cleveland professional athletes live, and professed his love to the rookie quarterback.

Gonos told police he pointed Manziel out to his girlfriend: "That's Johnny Manziel." Then he approached him.
...
Gonos stepped towards Manziel and was promptly punched in the face, the alleged victim's account to police says, followed by a beat down by Manziel's crew, giving the man a "swollen lip, right eye swollen, red face." A security guard intervened and also was hurt...

Not that it matters cause the haters are gonna hate no matter what but...

A man who told Cleveland police a member of Johnny Manziel's entourage assaulted him early Saturday has a criminal record involving alcohol and fighting, according to court records.

The Sandusky Municipal Court's website shows Christopher Gonos, 33, has been convicted of the following misdemeanors over the past 13 years:

An assault on Dec. 3, 2001
A citation for an open flask of alcohol on July 4, 2002
Public intoxication on Nov. 23, 2002
Disorderly conduct on Aug. 18, 2005
Disorderly conduct and obstructing official business on July 1, 2006
Gonos also was convicted last year on a federal charge of structuring financial transactions to avoid filing currency transaction reports, according to the Sandusky Register.

He was sentenced to two years of probation, fined $1,000, and ordered to submit to regular substance abuse treatment and testing, according to federal court records.

Johnny Manziel's agent disputed the account of a man who said he was "assaulted'' by Manziel's "entourage'' and that his brother was sucker-punched by Manziel in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The agent countered that Manziel and his roommate were the ones accosted by the man and his group.

"Johnny and his roommate had been out to dinner earlier in the evening with Johnny's mother, who is staying with him this week," said agent Erik Burkhardt in a statement.

"There was no entourage. Johnny and his roommate were trying to get on the apartment elevator at his home when they were accosted by a very aggressive man and his associates. It was an unfortunate situation and he immediately let (Browns general manager) Ray Farmer and the team know what happened."

...

Burkhardt maintains that Manziel was with only other person, which police identified as 24-year-old Dana Kirk, of Kerrville, Texas, Manziel's hometown.

Gonos, who has a criminal record, spoke to Scene, an alternative weekly newspaper, and described a brawl in which Manziel was tackled by Gonos' brother and shoved against a wall.

it certainly is, put in JFF and see how far they can drop in the standings for the sake of change. for the first time since the 80's the cleveland browns have a starting quarterback able to garnish enough wins to put them into legitimate playoff contention. doing so without the #1 receiver and with major injuries elsewhere. only cleveland could take a machete to the first good thing they've seen in ages.

of the future my butt. dude's 29 years old and has a 10-4 record with the browns ... he should get a jj watt type contract.

Not that it matters cause the haters are gonna hate no matter what but...

Why is it that when Manziel gets arrested at 19 it's just "kids being kids," but when a guy was arrested 13 years ago at the age of 20 he's discredited?

Oh yeah, the Cleveland dude didn't hang around in College Station pretending to go to school there for a couple of years.

the truth will come out

No one was arrested, and Gonos told USA TODAY Sports he has not decided if he wants to pursue formal charges.

“I waited in the lobby, to tell my side of the story. I stayed there, the police officers were super cool, they listened to me,” Gonos said. “I told them if they didn’t believe me, to check the tape.”

The hotel manager told police to contact the hotel’s security director to obtain security camera footage.

Browns head coach Mike Pettine on Monday afternoon said that he had not seen footage of the incident, though the Browns were “in the process of collecting information,” Pettine said.

Manziel is a very public figure. If the accounts are correct that he was waiting on the elevator to go to his apartment, it is one thing to approach him and say that he is a big fan, and maybe even ask for an autograph. The End! Gonas, the alleged "victim" certainly crossed the line when he as he said tried to hug Manziel. We have stalkers out there and some crazy enough to hug and put a knife in your back at the same time. So even if his account is accurate, touching in aggressive manner requires some degree of protection from strangers.

Not that it matters cause the haters are gonna hate no matter what but...

I'm not a big fan of Manziel, but Christopher Gonos sounds like a doofus. Being a fan does not afford you the right to invade someone's personal space, especially right outside of their home.

Maybe the tape shows something different, but I do not perceive Johnny as doing anything wrong. The whole "don't start none, won't be none" mentality comes to mind.

my question is, why does he have a body guard? He isn't even the starter and is barley the back up and needs a body guard....

Dude is starting to turn into another Beiber....

Manziel says it was just him and his roommate.

I do not find Gronos to be credible.

Among his other transgressions, this one clearly reveals that he's a big liar:

Gonos also was convicted last year on a federal charge of structuring financial transactions to avoid filing currency transaction reports,

Unless there is clear evidence (ie tape) revealing otherwise, this dude can go eff himself. I freakin' hate liars.

More details on the last fed charge (questioned by some).

Three in Gonos family plead guilty

Federal court documents show that Chris Gonos, however, now has special conditions imposed on him because he failed multiple drug tests in recent months and weeks. He tested positive for marijuana use in September and last week, and he tested positive for cocaine in June.

He told court officials “marijuana use has been a part of his life for so long, and stopping has been more difficult than he imagined,” according to court documents. The conditions of his release require him to avoid alcohol use and continue undergoing substance abuse treatment.

Evidently, Manziel can add another notch to his other life's poor choices.........his body guard.

Manziel’s bodyguard arrested for DUI, while driving Manziel’s car
Posted by Mike Florio on November 29, 2014, 2:46 PM EST

The man at the center of the allegation that Johnny Manziel’s entourage pummeled a zealous fan finds himself in another controversy.

According to 19ActionNews.com, Manziel’s bodyguard has been arrested for DUI while driving Manziel’s car. The bodyguard, whose name has not yet been disclosed, also allegedly assaulted the fan who approached Manziel at an upscale apartment complex on November 22.

While Manziel wasn’t in the car, Manziel owns the car. Which, if the allegedly drunken bodyguard had caused property damage, injury, or worse, would have exposed Manziel to significant financial responsibility.

The bodyguard has not been charged, but he reportedly remains jailed.

Right. Because you are only allowed to celebrate a touchdown when you are winning.
:vincepalm:

The knee-jerk defense is strong in you.

No, the senseless hateraid for anything he does is just dumb

Seriously.... He just scored his first ever NFL TD and people are hating on him for "how" he did it and that they were behind in the score.

I forgot how strong his arm looks. Kid throws effortless bullets on ropes.

He didn't look unprepared, but you could tell the game was going too fast for him.

The Browns play the Colts next week. The secret to their wins so far has been the defense getting turnovers. If that doesn't happen, they can't even move the ball, much less score... with Hoyer.

I know they're going to go back to Hoyer & cross their fingers & blame the rest of the team, but they play Indy next. We need them to beat Indy. Either that defense shows up & get multiple turnovers, or Johnny makes big plays & keep them in the game.

Or.... they get both.

Time will tell but really how stupid the media hyped it the minute he started warming up. But that gets clicks on websites . I hope he does well .

He's chosen a very polarizing persona so yes there are people who criticize unfairly. It would help if he could have a teensy bit of situational awareness and some better decision making. Many people find the money celebration obnoxious to begin with. I don't think almost anyone would have kicked him for a simple celebration.

I bet if he went to some school in South Dakota he wouldn't get so much hate around these boards.

If he had a less polarizing persona such as Keenum or McCoy, he wouldn't get so much hate nation wide. He brings it on himself by his need to be in the spotlight

I don't like a guy celebrating when his team is down, regardless of who it is. Seems like a me-first attitude. But I'm also the kind of guy who would probably just hand the ball to the ref regardless of the situation anyway. To each their own.

Good for him for getting that TD.

Meh, he was excited about his first NFL TD and getting his team to feed off of his energy. Its no different than what he did after scoring during his last college game against Duke while bringing them back from behind after making plays. If they were getting blown out and he scored with a minute left and did that then I'd have a problem with it. Cam Newton on MNF a couple of years ago comes to mind with his Super Man celebration down by 4 touchdowns in the 4th quarter.
