The Johnny "Football" Manziel NFL thread

It must be nice to have someone other than homer Texans fans to get excited about your QB... er, backup QB.

For those Johnny Manziel fans, Jason LaCanfora expects the Browns to have a special package in place, today.

That reminds me of the Jets and their Tebow package. That worked out great.

I picked NO to beat the Browns. .. a gimme if I ever saw one.. dang that Johnny Manziel.

Except, didn't that play draw a flag for Johnny Trickplay and was nullified?

...the play was negated by a penalty on Browns running back Terrance West for an illegal shift. West jumped back behind Brian Hoyer just before the snap and clearly was not set for a second.

The league office, though, referred to page 64 of the rule book, which states unsportsmanlike conduct is "Using entering substitutes, legally returning players, substitutes on sidelines, or withdrawn players to confuse opponents, including lingering by players leaving the field after being replaced by a substitute and an offensive player lining up or going in motion less than five yards from the sideline in front of his team's designated bench area. However, an offensive player is permitted to line up less than five yards from the sidelines on the same side as his team's player bench, provided he is not in front of the designated bench area."

The designated bench area is between the 32-yard-lines, and the Browns ran the play from their 38.

ESPN analyst Gerald Austin, Mike Carey on CBS and Mike Pereira of Fox also said the play was illegal.
...
Bill Leavy's crew missed that call, though, and, had West been set, it would have been a big -- and memorable -- play for Manziel and the Browns.

I think it should have been unsportsmanlike just because he was engaged in a conversation with someone not on the field. I understand the "letter of the law" & that they "cleared it" with the officials before the game, still think it was cheap.

Now, if they had JFF run into a 10 man huddle, then get into an argument with Hoyer, about who is supposed to be in the huddle, then walk away like he wasn't supposed to be there, that would have been fine.

But talking to the coach on the sideline, nah... I don't like that.

At my first job out of college, there was a guy who got hired maybe 2 weeks before me, also straight out of college. He, too, obviously missed college life because he clearly couldn't tell the difference between a Friday or a Saturday night and a Monday or a Tuesday night. He was fired about 3 months in after falling asleep in a meeting with a client.

He made it clear that he didn't miss school........

.........the thought of what might have been had he opted not to come out after his sophomore year.

"I don't think I miss school,'' said Manziel. "But I miss those guys in the locker room. I miss Coach Sumlin. I think it's fair for me to say that I miss college life, but this is the decision that I made. And I knew very well going into the draft last year that it was going to be different for me and going to be a time for me to grow up. That's the path I chose. And if I wanted to stay in college and sleep in and go to class and horse around like I was doing the past couple years, then I should have stayed."

.....He probably should have.........since the above essentially speaks volumes as to Manziel loathing "structure."

The cameras cut away to Manziel just after backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Justin Hunter over Buster Skrine to give the Titans a 25-point edge with 2:44 left in the second quarter. Manziel chatted with practice squad quarterback Connor Shaw and found something funny.
...
Perhaps Manziel was saying to Shaw, "Heh, heh, don't worry, Brian Hoyer will get us right back in this thing.''

Because that's exactly what happened right after Manziel's televised chuckle.
...
By the time it was over, everyone was laughing. Manziel just got started a little sooner than everyone else.

I hadn't seen this but Apparently Manziel wants to Mentor Jamies Winston:

Johnny Manziel has enough on his plate as a rookie NFL quarterback who seemingly needs a little counseling of his own at times. But the former Texas A&M star nevertheless wants to be a mentor for Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston when it comes to dealing with the pressures of being a returning Heisman Trophy winner.

..................

"He's a guy I want to help in as many ways as I can," Manziel said Friday.

Winston, of course, is also being mentored by Buffalo Bills quarterback and former Seminoles teammate EJ Manuel.

But to get through to Winston, it apparently takes a village

Will be interesting to see what the Browns do at the QB spot in the near future. Hoyer is performing with young and developing receivers, a hampered Jordan Cameron and no Josh Gordon. He hasn't been re-signed so do they bring him back though they drafted Manziel? If Hoyer his the market he'll have his suitors.

Because they used a 1st on him there will eventually be pressure from the owner/front office to see what Manziel has.

If would be just like the Browns to finally find a somewhat decent QB and let him walk for a reason like this, only to have the first round pick be a total bust and end up back where they always end up.

That's the problem right there. Do you stick with "somewhat decent" or do you try to get better?

Not that I think JFF is definitely better. But if the Browns finish 8-8 this season & Hoyer was only "somewhat decent" do you move forward towards getting Manziel ready to play?

& they can still trade him, If he's not the player they thought he was & they can get an idea in practice, they can trade him before anyone sees him bomb in the preseason.

Factory of Sadness.

It might get snickers and might be embarrassing, but in the long run sitting Manziel is beneficial for him. He's not a finished prospect and needs polish before he's ready to step out and actually play proper football.

I doubt barring injury that he starts until next season, but it will be interesting to see what Cleveland does in the offseason.

Cleveland has 2 first round picks. If they play this right they could finally dig themselves out of the perpetual sadness they've been in since Art Modell left town.

I don't think Hoyer ever wins a Super Bowl as a starting QB so I see your point.

I'd roll with Hoyer until someone beat him out. Problem is, I don't think Manziel will ever beat him out. He will get the job by default and they will be worse off for it. Just my opinion.

In any case, whether Hoyer or Manziel is their QB next season, I expect them to be drafting another one within the next three years.

Many of us were saying that you had to sit him down and let him absorb an NFL playbook. His transition was always going to be tough and he needed to adjust his playing style somewhat to compensate. Hopefully he's taking it serious because I thought he needed a little humbling when he came out.

I have been surprised at how efficient Cleveland's offense has been running though. 1st year head coaches with a defensive emphasis rarely have offenses this good right out of the gate.

As for their 1st round picks, most people thought both picks would be top 8, maybe even top 5. Right now it's looking like both picks will be in the 10-18 range.

That's a good point, but two mid 1st rounders are still first rounders, albeit maybe not necessarily the creme de la creme. If Cleveland plays it wisely, they can make out of this coming draft very nicely.

I still believe that Manziel needs to learn to pattern his game after Russell Wilson. I always thought that the Wilson comparisons were facile coming out of college because Wilson is way more polished (the only thing they really had in common in college was their height and weight), but if Manziel learns to play like that he could do very well.

maybe JFB will be better on another team other then CLE I bet he will be on the bench for 4 years then get traded

Johnny Manziel’s jersey-sales ranking is falling and fellow Browns quarterback Brian Hoyer’s has been rising, as the six-year veteran surpassed Johnny football this week.

Hoyer’s number 6 Brown’s jersey now ranks sixth in jersey sales, while Manziel comes in at number eleven, according to Dick’s Sporting Goods. Sports Illustrated reported that it’s the first time that sales of Hoyer's jersey have exceeded those of Manziel.

This is good for Johnny. I still don't know if he's going to be a good QB, but sitting is good for him to learn and good for him to be humbled some. Maybe.

I agree. Confidence is not a bad thing, but he needed a reality check after sitting on that pedestal in college. He also needed time to transform his game a bit and become less dependent on improvisation.

Confidence is one thing. (Which I like) Arrogance is another (Which I don't like).

Johnny is the latter of the two, should he every learn humility I may have to reevaluate him. But at this point I'm in the column of "I don't care for him."

I am so glad we didn't pick him up.

He wasn't even the QB they thought about trading back into 1st 4

That would make Bridgewater the guy we were thinking about trading up for?

Kinda pissed hearing we thought about it and didn't pull the trigger. I was under the impression that we never considered it, which is fine, but to think we considered grabbing a top QB and didn't is a little concerting.

Carr or Garoppolo

Why would we consider trading up for them but stand pat and then pass on them when they were available at #33? You don't consider trading up for a player and then pass on them when they come available to you.

That's like me considering if I should buy a Corvette and then a stranger saying "here, have this Corvette'" and I'm just like "no thanks, I'm good".

Or you're betting they'll be there later. There was a lot of hype around Tom Savage, because OB said a couple of good things about him. The media would have you believe that we would have traded down & take him sometime in the first.

Maybe it was Garoppolo, there was talk about someone taking him late in the first. Then after he made it past, Rick talked everyone into believing he'll be there at the top of the third... & he almost was. Who'd have tunk New England would take a QB in the 2nd round?

& just because the Texans were thinking of trading into the first doesn't mean that it was a good idea, or even a logical discussion.

Could have been a change of heart overnight or maybe the thought that Garoppolo would be there in the 3rd.

Idk, your probably right in that it was Bortles, they may have thought he would drop further than he did

I have no idea. The rumor just doesn't make sense to me. Would love for Playoffs to pop back in and explain because if it wasn't Bridewater/Manziel and we passed on Carr/Garoppolo with our pick anyway then I don't see how it would be them either.

Maybe you and TK are right and we changed our mind overnight, which may help explain the situation but doesn't exactly inspire confidence.
