The Johnny "Football" Manziel NFL thread

I thought the phrase "there's a package on the table" meant trade or something. I was wondering what they were going to package with Manziel to get someone to take him.

You know, The "Manziel Package":

funny-easy-open-package.jpg

The quarterback with whom Johnny Manziel has been compared most favorably is Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton.
Like Tarkenton, Manziel was undersized at 6-foot. Like Tarkenton, Manziel was quite the runner. Tarkenton ranks fourth all-time among NFL quarterbacks in rushing with 3,674 yards. Manziel rushed for 1,410 yards at Texas A&M in 2012 on his way to a Heisman Trophy.
But Tarkenton is not a fan of his clone.
“I was excited from his college career,” said Tarkenton in a radio interview Thursday with the Talk of Fame Network. “But I watched him last week … if someone put a gun to my head and asked me if he was going to make it, I’d say no.
“He was very inaccurate. You can have the strongest arm or the weakest arm -- but you cannot play quarterback if you’re not accurate with the football. It’s not a hard thing to do. The great ones are always accurate. He missed four or five passes last week that were way off the mark. You cannot teach accuracy.
“He doesn’t look as quick. He looks hesitant. Right now, I don’t think he’s going to be an outstanding quarterback.”
Tarkenton arrived in the NFL as a third-round draft pick by the expansion Minnesota Vikings in 1961. He became a walk-in starter and an outstanding quarterback. He was a nine-time Pro Bowler and the 1975 NFL MVP.
Tarkenton lasted 18 seasons despite his lack of size, passing for 47,003 yards and 342 touchdowns. Even though he hasn’t played since 1978, Tarkenton still ranks in the NFL’s Top 10 in both passing yards and touchdowns.
Manziel was a first-round pick of the Cleveland Browns last May but lost a battle with Brian Hoyer for the starting quarterback position this summer.
Asked if he could give Manziel a bit of advice at this point of his career, Tarkenton said, “Get your life straightened out.”

I wouldnt bet on manziel being a good qb, but I won't say it's definitely not going to happen. He'll have to rededicate himself, be humbled and truly work on his craft. But right now that's a long journey for him IMO.

I thought manziel would be most likely to have early success but have to work to sustain it, but I'm rethinking that.

They are talking about special packages for him and I haven't seen anything he does well enough to warrant that.

My guess is that they are throwing that out there to make d coordinators prepare for it.

Every team in the NFL knows how to beat JFF, piss him off!

For anyone to try to compare Manziel to Tarkenton is an absolute insult.....and shows historic gross ignorance of the type of person Tarkenton was/is.

From an excerpt from an article written by Fran Tarkenton:
Religion certainly played a role in the game when I played. I grew up the son of a Pentecostal Holiness minister-we were charismatic before charismatic was cool. I was in church Wednesday night, Friday night, Sunday morning and Sunday night-every week of my childhood. I was there at the first-ever national camp for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, in Estes Park, Co., in 1956, along with everyone from legendary NFL quarterback Otto Graham to a young Don Meredith (although fellow quarterback Don and I didn't make it to many of the meetings). When I went to the NFL, I needed special dispensation from the church to play on Sundays.

I'm trying to figure out what kind of package they are going to put in for Manziel.

He hasn't done anything that makes me think he deserves a special set of plays for him. I mean...If they are going off of his college stuff...then ok...

But so far he's shown that he is not ready as a passer and his running ability is not as impressive as it was in college and could lead to him getting hurt.

Just let the guy sit and learn all year and then give him a crack next year.

He's not ready.

1st bolded: Or the year after

2nd: I don't see him ever being "ready".

Manziel: Browns knew he'd have to learn

By Pat McManamon [ESPN.com]

Because the Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback clearly knew what general manager Ray Farmer told ESPN.com’s Jim Trotter last week, as Manziel prefaced his growth in the preseason by saying: “You look at what Ray had to say ...”

Farmer said this: “I think he is right where he’s supposed to be. I laugh because it’s four weeks into his first training camp, and everyone is waiting to see Steve Young run out the tunnel. I don’t know where the reality in that lies.”

ManzielManziel appreciated it. He said he thought he took a step forward against St. Louis and he hopes to take another step forward against Chicago.

But he also said he never expected to walk in and be ready for everything immediately, that the only people who can do that have to know where they will be taken two months before the draft.

“I think they’re happy with my progression through the time I’ve been here so far,” Manziel said of the team. “I think they knew what they were getting when they took me, that it would be a process. It’s not a spread-the-field out and run, pick-a-side concepts like we did at A&M.”

The Browns are committed to the Kyle Shanahan system, so rather than change the system for Manziel’s talents, they are force-feeding him the system. He accepts it.

“It’s just different what we do here and what the NFL game is all about,” Manziel said. “I think they knew that, they were smart enough to watch the tape and (to have) known and heard enough about our system to know how it was.
“I think they knew it would take some time for me to get adjusted to everything.”

Seems to be wishful thinking for someone who has stated (and has acted) as though no one is going to change him.

And :hobie: Vince Young...the ORIGINAL Tebow. As a liscenced professional hater...I must concur, we ARE gonna hate. Vince...uh...I mean Tim...I mean Johnny's first game will be against the Steelers. IF he winds up playing in that one that defense is going to try to make ESPN highlight reels to see if they can give him his "welcome to the NFL" hit.

Insightful piece from Sage...

Memo to Johnny Rookie -- Sage Rosenfels

Let me preface this by stating what some you of you already know. I was never a true starting quarterback in the NFL. I started 12 games and played in 44 over the course of twelve years. I didn’t go to any pro-bowls or win any playoff games. But I learned what it took by playing behind some great quarterbacks. I can’t give Johnny Manziel advice on how to throw a football or which protein shake to drink to gain weight. But maybe I can offer some advice on what it takes to be a quarterback in the league for a long time; hopefully as a successful starter.

I get it. I understand. We were all 21 once and liked to have a good time. Making great decisions isn’t what most 21 year olds do. But being a first round draft pick at the quarterback position isn’t exactly normal either. So Johnny Manziel, let me give you a heads up on what playing quarterback in the NFL is all about and in the process give our readers an insight about what this position requires from a preparation standpoint...

I invite everyone, regardless of feelings for Merrill Hoge, to take some time and listen to his epic rant on Manziel this morning. Sorry no link yet, but it was on Pittsburgh radio and it's an all timer.

This fan, in an epic NSFW rant, should have stuck around for the 2nd half

He just needed:

1. Another adjective available to mix it up a little.

2. End the video with "I'll see you next Sunday" to tie in the other video "factory of perpetual sadness"

Maybe he should look into 'Johnny Bench'

"Coach! Coach! Put me in, I can wreck this team!

"Johnny, get your ass back on the bench and study the damn playbook!"

Boy, wouldn't this be something. Meanwhile Tony Romo just played his first game of the 6 year $108MM extension.

Gosselin: If I'm Cleveland Browns, I'm calling Jerry Jones today and offering Johnny Manziel

If I were the Cleveland Browns, I'd call Jones today and offer him Manziel for a first round pick in 2015. The Browns fleeced the Colts out of their one for RB Trent Richardson last year and might also get the Cowboys to bite this year. Jones clearly has been mourning his decision not to take him in the 2014 draft. The Browns might wind up with a Top 10 pick in return for a guy who's not even playing for them right now.
