In this draft analyst's opinion, I would grade Watson as a third-round pick for the 2017 NFL Draft. Watson was off with his accuracy for much of 2016, displaying poor ball placement, especially when going downfield. He missed a lot of potential touchdowns as a result. Watson has a lot of room for improvement with his field vision, ball placement, and accuracy. There were instances where he flashed accuracy, but he had too many missed and poorly placed throws. Watson has some strengths for the NFL that cause many to compare him to Dak Prescott. When plays break down, they can use his athleticism to pick up yards on the ground and also can avoid sacks.

Where the comparison breaks down is in terms of accuracy and ball security. Prescott was much more accurate in college and threw far less interceptions. Prescott threw only five interceptions as a senior with 11 as a junior. Thus, Watson threw more interceptions (17) in 2016 than Prescott did in his final two years combined.

There are a lot of growth issues that Watson will need development for in the NFL - aside from his passing skills. Watson is also going to need to learn how to work under center, call plays in a huddle, and develop his footwork to make drops from being under center. His college offense has a lot of quick throws, screens, and designed runs that inflated his numbers but don't translate to the NFL. Some NFL sources believe that Watson is going to need his pro offense to be catered to him and that he could have issues fitting a NFL system.

In speaking with sources from teams around the NFL, their grades on Watson didn't match the media hype that he has received. I surveyed many teams to see where their initial draft grades were for Watson. Two playoff teams told me they had third-round grades on Watson. One said it was on the low end as a third- to fourth-rounder. Another playoff team told Walt that they had a third-round grade on Watson. Two other teams said they had second-round grades on Watson. All that being said, teams believe that Watson could be a late first-round quarterback, similar to Teddy Bridgewater, because of the dire need at the position across the NFL. A team could move back into the first round for Watson like Bridgewater. A general manager of an AFC team said that in the draft meetings in April, Watson will benefit from the 'Dak Prescott effect' and rise. Thus, it wouldn't surprise anyone if Watson is taken in the middle of the first round during the 2017 NFL Draft.

Just because most teams have Watson graded on the second day or mid-rounds doesn't mean that he won't go in the first round. Last year, many teams had second-round grades on Jared Goff, yet the Rams traded up to the first-overall pick for him. There were teams that had mid-round grades on E.J. Manuel and fourth-round grades on Christian Ponder, yet both of them went as top-16 picks in their NFL drafts. Many teams had second-round grades on Teddy Bridgewater, yet he went late in Round 1. Thus, you can't rule out that a quarterback-needy team won't be desperate enough to take Watson at any point in the first round

I don’t really care that the thread has negative **** in it. That’s this whole freaking message board. I post plenty of negative about this franchise.

I just see a bad take, a take that is fact-less, makes no sense, or doesn’t take the bigger picture into account, and I try to fill those gaps. That’s all.

The picking apart every single mistake the guy makes on a shitshow team, and saying that’s who he is is just dumb. A million examples of QBs getting in different situations, whether it’s a new team or different coaching on the same team, and improving their game.

Watson has never had a legit run game, never had an o-line worth a ****, never had coaching worth a ****, and never had a top end defense, and he STILL puts up numbers of a top 5-10 QB in this league and STILL has the best winning percentage this franchise has ever had. Get out of here with this Schaub or Tannehill is a better QB bullshit. And I liked Schaub.
 
One thing that isn’t brought up is that Carr has the highest paid Oline in the NFL, the running back we should have taken instead of Howard, and is being coached by a guy who at least won a SB. Watson has never had any of these things, yet I still think Watson is way better than Carr.

Who's saying anything about elite?

We're saying that certain claim like corrosion's of Watson as being "piss poor to middling" as without proof/merritt because none of the professionals (coaches/analysts) ever said that.
And Steelb's comments are even worse.

I dont think they had All 22 in 2009. If they did, I'm sure you would find that Schaub had a great 2009.

I don't know if 5th is right. And I am not trying to be mean. However, when you go out and almost tie a reletive useless QB in stats... something has to improve. I agree OL is needed but you can run and you can throw it away (not done often). Make better choices with where you throw it. I think he is solid top 8, but I don't know about 5. Brady, Rogers, Brees are top 3 so who do you put at 4 and 6?

Edit: It has Watson at 6. But the list is awful. Murray, ahead of Brady and Rogers? Wilson #1? I suggest a different list.

PFF has been very critical of Watson in the past.
Their scouting report was fairly brutal, too.

& that's his second coach. So another point for the likely hood of Watson getting better with a better coach is high. Very high.

I think there is more to the story. Cal just inked a big deal for Hopkins and I don't think he wanted to pay him more or talk about it yet. So, he told GM OB to trade him. Keep in mind that Cal was and is the final word. OB probably thought maybe Johnson would help the run game. When healthy he was a beast. To make up for Hopkins he tried to get some WRs and Cooks is pretty good Cobb was.

Dude Brady is not a top 3 quarterback right now. You’re stuck in the past if you honestly believe Brady is top three right now. You’re nitpicking right here and for what. Watson in the past 4 games has shown a lot growth and improvement. The mistakes you’re talking about I can prove every last quarterbacks makes. Like I said you’re only here to be negative. How about telling us what Watson does right.

He had improved alot the yr he broke his leg and theTexans beat the Raiders in the playoffs. It took him a yr to learn Gruden's system and now he's back to playing well again.

Hopefully this happens with the new regime and DW4. The 1st yr is a learning yr although he shouldn't be terrible. By yr 2 in the new system after the 1st 3-4 games I expect DW4 to be playing at a high level.
 
Steelbtexan, this board is about different opinions. Hell, 76Texan and I had alot of conversation about Keenum. Your opinion, in regards to Watson seem jaded for some reason. I don't know why, it just is. Does Watson have flaws? Sure, every qb in the NFL has flaws. I think he has done more with less. His oline has always ranked in the bottom 3rd. He had Hopkins and nothing else. He had 2 good defense and he had BOB. I think if he can get a middle of the road oline,top 15 defense, its enough to get the Texans where they want to go. Thats why I don't see the rebuild as long as others because they have the qb and LT. This team keep signing or trading for rbs,when there are tons of guys coming out every year. I do find it strange you think Carr is a SB quality qb now, in his 7th yr, but the book is written on Watson already.

Because Carr improved and I dont think the Texans can get to where they want to go unless DW4 vastly improves and changes the way he plays. I dont see it happening so I look at this as wasted time for the Texans org.

I get what you're saying and why you think DW4 can take the Texans to where they want to go and I hope you're right and I'm wrong.

Brady still can read a D and make better choices with the ball. He throws it away and he steps into throws with a dirty pocket. Things Watson is not doing.
I have already said I want him to get better. I have also said I wanted him on draft day.
Last, but most importantly is everyone has bad traits. Brady walked into a very well prepared team and got cooked. It happens. However, in his 4th year he had went from a late pick to a top 5 QB same with Rogers and Wilson. That was the point of my post. He didn't sit stop making improvements. Thus far I don't see a different Watson from year 2. Now it can be coaches or player. You can say the team isn't good, but for the most part in every case of the top QBs the team was bad at times. Be it OL, run game, D, WRs. What set them apart and still sets them apart is the improvements they made and the ability to make lesser players better. I have NOT said he is bad. Just to win a SB he must get better. The OL is bad, but what excuses are there for not throwing a ball away. You don't try to make something from nothing and take a sack. That hurts the team. Had the Jags thrown the ball away a few times, the whoever QB would have had a better QBR than Watson and already had a better completion percentage. Because he forced a throw and it was a pick. I want to see him grow and with JJ around and he is still playing the same as year 2 seems to say he may not. Seeing JJ is everyone's ear about being better.

Fingers crossed he starts looking off DBs more and throwing it away to keep it 3rd and short over 3rd and long. Seeing that is what I want to see. Better play so with better team he can win big games.

Apparently. Numbers don't lie. Brady, Rogers, Breed all made improvements in each season. Be it mental or physical improvements. I already stated ALL QBs have a bad game and even tossed Brady in vs the Saints as an example.

It seems that you can not make a point and even include that you want to see them get better without a koolaid sipping Watson is God fan to act like no problem exists. Proof by the posts above
