The Actual and Real 2017 Texans Talk Mock Draft Extravaganza

Engram was going to try to lead an unsuccessful lobby for him for the Texans but now I won't have to

I'll vote Foreman too.

Let's call it and move on to the Texans. Need position and good value there with Foreman.

I nominate at 2.57 -

Taylor Moton, RT - hopefully to lock down this trouble spot.

or

Tyus Bowser, LB - just so much athletic, versatile, and tenacious potential here. think he could be really special in this defense.

For Texans, Kamara is pretty enticing. I'm not a big Lamar Miller fan based on what I saw last year, although I liked him enough in his more limited role with the Dolphins. I think he'll be way overpaid after 2017 and the cap savings for a 2018 cut makes sense.

Having said that, it's going to get pretty thin at OT if we don't get a prospect here.

I vote Taylor Moton. I'm not sure if he's going to be a tackle or a guard, but I like his play, one of the few OL I have watched a good bit of, and he seems like a good guy as well. He retweets PFF scouting reports on other players, even fellow OL prospects. He was a leader on his college team and a 4 year starter.

I'll nominate Antonio Garcia OT Troy. Best pass blocker available and whether the QB is Romo, Savage, or Watson, that's the most important criteria.

My vote is for Jourdan Lewis. IMO we can find a tackle just as talented as Moton in the 4th round. I question if he will play tackle in NFL, my money is he will be a guard. If we have to go tackle I would go Garcia, but IMO Bisnowaty, Holden and Skipper are just as likely to be a solid starter. Lewis is an immediate impact slot corner with middle first round talent. His off field should be no concern. No evidence of any kind.

Moton all the way, Garcia didn't show at the combine like he needed to, he is too light and wasn't athletic enough. Moton will come in and contribute day 1. He actually tested better athletically than Garcia and is a power player.

Interesting to hear people say Moton is an OG. He's every bit the athlete Cam Robinson is.

Taylor Moton
40-Yard Dash: 5.18
Vertical Jump: 30.5
Broad Jump: 109.0
3-Cone Drill: 7.73
Shuttle: 4.58

Cam Robinson
40-Yard Dash: 5.15
Vertical Jump: 26.0
Broad Jump: 106.0
3-Cond Drill: 7.81
Shuttle: 4.82

I like Moton. I think he can play RT. And even if he can't I see huge potential at RG.

That would be my pick.

Conversely there are still alot of corners left that can play slot. Kazee, Sutton, for instance. Bisnowaty and Skipper don't compare to Moton, Holden maybe but he's still a level below IMHO.

Sparq Rating for OL at the combine

Bolles 73.3
Lamp 73.2
Siragusa 70.7
Moton 54.3
Holden 39.3
Garcia 36.8
Bisnowaty 10.8
Skipper 7.7

Basically Moton is pretty athletic for a power guy. He could fill in at Tackle and be a force in the run game from jump.

For need I can't argue Moton. I think he can be a day 1 RT, especially when considering if Texans got him he'd be competing against Chris Clark AKA he would not be competing against anyone.

That said... Man I love Jourdan Lewis basically for every reason I said when drafting King for the Ravens about 6 or 7 pages ago.

I would not be mad with either direction yall went, but I see a gamer in Lewis when I watch games. I have little to no ability to evaluate how good OLineman are when I watch games, I only know how to tell if they've made a mistake or not. Watching Lewis game has me a bit biased, but like I said, I am good with either direction, my vote is Lewis though.

PFF

Name: Taylor Moton

School: Western Michigan

Position fit: Could play tackle at the next level, but his best fit is likely at guard.

Stats to know: Moton had the ninth-highest grade among offensive tackles in 2016 at 83.6 overall. Surrendered only two QB hits and eight hurries on 467 attempts last season. Gave up only two sacks, seven QB hits, and 25 hurries on 1,376 attempts over the last three years

What he does best:

  • Strong upper body does a good job anchoring down and stabbing rushers in pass protection.
  • Flashed quickness at the Senior Bowl performing scoop blocks on the backside of outside zone plays.
  • Great at controlling blocks, steering defenders the way he wants.
  • Wins way more than he loses.
  • Good power into blocks and double teams (Fits all run schemes).
  • Strong combine showed off his movement skills (4.58 20-yard shuttle).
Biggest concern:

  • A little waist bend from time to time (forward lean) when pass blocking. Still managed to allow only eight pressures in all of 2016.
  • Kansas State’s Jordan Willis and Wisconsin’s T.J. Watt both beat him on speed rushes to the outside.
  • Can faster players get into his chest and pull him down to take the edge?
  • Struggled from time to time with wider rushers.
  • Questions against level of competition on a weekly basis, but performed well when given the opportunity to play against better players.
Bottom line: Moton is one of the better offensive linemen in this year’s draft. He has the strength and athletic ability to move from right tackle to guard and have success in any scheme. There are some concerns as can improve his pass protection against skilled rushers, but a move to guard can protect him in that regard. Moton brings versatility and a potentially solid starter to an offensive line.

OVERVIEW

The Broncos brought aboard Moton after he was named a first-team all-Michigan pick as a high school senior. He redshirted in 2012, but started every game over the past four years for WMU. Moton lined up at right tackle for all 25 games of the 2013 and 2014 seasons. He moved to right guard in 2015, receiving enough votes from MAC coaches to be named third-team all-conference. Moton moved back to the right tackle spot as a senior, earning first-team All-MAC and multiple All-American honors in helping the Broncos "row the boat" to a MAC championship.

ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS
Big off the bus. Massive frame with good arm thickness and proportional build in his legs. Plus arm length with big hands. Starting experience at right guard and tackle. Comes off the ball with pad level. Makes concerted effort to drop hips and roll under his target at contact. Has dominant drive-blocking potential. His down blocks turn into steam-rollings. Coordinates hips and hands for maximum pop through point of contact as run blocker. Held his own against Ohio State in 2015 and smothered Illinois DE Dawuane Smoot this season. A bear with strong paws. Plays tend to end for defender once he latches on. Functional climbing to second-level target. Bull rushers won’t bully him very often.
WEAKNESSES
Will need to play with quicker hands into punch as guard. Looping, wide approach with hands toward target could open his chest to defenders. Footwork needs plenty of work. Needs choppier feet. Waist bending in run game needs correction. Content to make blocks at angles that need to be squared up. Lateral and move blocks feature inconsistent base width. Issues coming to balance before contact if block isn't right in front of him. Average body control and athleticism. Will be limited to primarily power-based schemes. Has issues with oversetting in pass pro. Can be fooled by twists.
SOURCES TELL US
"I had to go back and watch his 2015 tape when he played guard. He was a little rough at tackle this year but that isn't his spot. Big and strong as a guard. He was moving guys from Ohio State around like it was nothing." -- Area scout for NFC team
NFL COMPARISON

BOTTOM LINE
Four-year starter for ascending Western Michigan program. Size and potential to dominate at the point of attack with pure power should make him a coveted right guard prospect. He can be a little stiff in his movements and his footwork needs plenty of work, but he's functional in both areas. Might need additional work before he is ready to take on the wily, athletic defensive tackles in the NFL, but his physical traits and power give him a chance to become a reliable NFL starter.-Lance Zierlein

Measurables

Height: 6’5″

Weight: 319 lbs

Arm Length: 34 1/8”

Hands: 10 5/8”

Strengths

Versatility is one of a lineman’s greatest weapons. Moton has plenty of experience at tackle, where he played in 2013, 2014 and 2016, as well as guard, where he lined up for the entirety of the 2015 season.

Durability is also a treasured trait that teams value highly. Moton has started every single game for Western Michigan from 2013-2016. He did not miss a single game in his college career, which is something very few prospects at any position can say.

Regarding physical traits, he has massive arms, hands, and legs. His limbs are also quite strong. He is a wall of downhill force when he is on the move, and when on the line of scrimmage, he can smother anyone coming at him.

He is very, very athletic for someone of his stature. At last week’s combine, the big man ran a 4.58 40-yard-dash, good for fourth amongst all offensive linemen.

Weaknesses

His hands are not as quick as they need to be. The weight of his massive arms is problematic. Once he decides to throw his arms somewhere, he cannot move them quick enough to deter the athletic pass-rushers of today’s game.

His footwork also could use some refinement. His center of gravity is fine, but if a rusher tries to go around him, which is likely given his imposing size and strength, he will have difficulty sealing the edge. Pass protection, therefore, is not his strong suit.

Bottom Line

Moton’s weaknesses, although minimal, hinder his pass protection skills. However, the same attributes that hurt his pass protection make his run blocking second to none in this shallow draft class of offensive linemen. His weaknesses could be addressed with the right coaching, and his strengths can only be maximized at the next level.

When he gets his hands on a defender, that defender is pretty much out of the play. His track record of durability is even more impressive considering his physical style. He will likely go in the second round but could turn into a reliable, long-term option for a team that sees his potential.

Lot of people say Cam is a guard too, Mayock for instance ranks him with interior OL

I think the highest rated Safety on the board. Doesn't matter if it's a FS or SS. We need to own the middle of the field & shrink the field for our outside corners.

I wouldn't say a lot of people are saying it. Who other than Mayock is saying it?

I wouldn't say that he has to be an OG. But I think Robinson is going to really struggle in pass protection as a RT. I think his ceiling is definitely higher inside.

Agreed, with that said, I vote Moton, he's got a nasty game. Something the ol is badly missing. A hard worker whose best football is ahead of him. Plus I have been very tired of seeing garbage rt play for the last 4 yrs.

That would be Josh Jones on my board. I think he might be available in the 3rd but wouldn't be upset if the Texans nabbed him in the 2nd.

Moton (8) - TexansSeminole, WolverineFan, jradMIT, bah007, Mollywhopper, PapaL, banned1976, steelbtexan
Lewis (2) - gs27, TexansFTW
Garcia (1) - Lucky

Correct me if I have anything wrong. Looks like it'll take a revolution to overthrow Moton as the pick.

Do yall think Moton starts at RT day 1 (assuming Texans draft him)? I don't really see the need for him inside assuming we get everyone including Nick Martin back healthy then he can either push Mancz to guard or head there himself.

I really would prefer not to see Clark or Allen as opening day starters anywhere along the line.

What are yalls thoughts?

Yes. If Derek Newton can start for this team at RT for 5 years then absolutely Moton can start. He's essentially a more athletic and more polished version of Newton.

Yes I believe he would. Speed guys would give him problems in year one but he'd be the best RT on the team by the time he was given a uniform number.

Moton is a guy who can immediately start, he might struggle in pass pro, but judging by his agility measurables, he has better feet than he's been credit for, his shuttle number of 4.58 is outstanding, as run blocker he'll be able to come in and move guys, that alone is a huge upgrade to Clark.

Honestly I don't think he is gonna make it to the back half of round 2, the Texans would be lucky if he's there

I like Motons toughness and the way he moves people in the run game. He's part of the answer to the 3rd and short issue

With the 59th pick Kansas City selects Anthony Walker - LB, Northwestern

Derrick Johnson is 34 years old and coming off yet another leg injury so his time is just about up. KC has been looking for his successor for the last few years but has failed to accomplish the task. That ends now. Walker is a sideline-to-sideline tackling machine who recorded 225 tackles and 29 TFL in 2 years as a full-time starter. He can come downhill against the run, fly to the sideline to shutdown edge runs, and can drop into coverage and cover the seams. He has a complete game and would slide inside to start next to Johnson as a rookie and take over as QB of the defense once Johnson retires.
