Texans vs Chargers: 2024 Playoff Wild Card Game thread.

Moving Howard to OG helped with picking up the stunts. Now that Scuggs has moved to RG I hope that picking up stunts on that side of the OL doesn't become an issue. Fisher/Scruggs are really young players and some mistakes will be made.

Note to C:, Fisher and Scruggs are basically rookies. Be aware of a stunt from that side and be prepared to release ball early. Signed your offensive coordinator.
Joey Bosa & Khalil Mack are going to test them.

If anybody is interested in my tickets, I have 2 seats in Sect 115, Row J and a yellow parking pass. I can't make the game.

This should probably be a close game the key can we get a score in the 2nd half to win or will we have another dead half like we have much of the season. I say probably not.

Chargers 27
Texans 20

Interested to see what “wrinkle” DeMeco will unveil in his defense for playoff football. EX: Stingley shadowing Amari Cooper in the playoffs last season.

Obviously this will be the first time we see Harris/Azeez at LB so maybe they’ll have some more creative blitzes to take advantage of Chargers’ weak interior OL?

Or maybe to counteract Greg Roman’s more run-centric approach on offense we see more traditional 3 LB sets and get To’o To’o on the field instead of playing nickel with Okudah or Bryant on the field.

I think we’d all rather see To’o To’o on the field based on his play this season. This may be the rare game these days where you can play a traditional 4-3 and not suffer in mismatches.

With Ward and Petrie out, their best personnel grouping against the Chargers’ run game will be the 3 LB set.

I might be mistaken, but when Ward is in the lineup, the defense seems elite. Without him and even Petrie, they lose some flexibility. Hope the LBs will be able to cover the TEs in the seams.

I just need Bobby to stop calling the predictable WR screen which results in a wasted down/loss of yardage. His timing for calling these sucks. Need to figure out a better way to get the ball out quickly.

No matter, I'm ready for either
A) A pleasant surprise and win that allows our team to give the football world the middle finger for at least this weekend

or

B) 3 hours of frustration that remind me of why I need to have decent health and property insurance to be a Texans fan.

Short of winning this game, the 2024 season would seem to be atleast a half-step backwards, a regression, over CJ's rookie of the year and highly celebrated 2023 season which included a Wild-Card playoff win.
I seem to recall that going into the season, it was generally acknowledged that the schedule was tougher than last season and we might not do as well. With our matching 10-7 record, we more or less met, or maybe exceeded, expectations. Now, our OL, as a unit and individually, did not meet most of our expectations. And this seemed to have affected CJ, as well as a not unusual second year slump. But in the end result, the unit and the team got the job done. With a couple of tweaks this off season, we have a solid team to go forward.

This could be a very low-scoring game. The Texansonly have two main weapons for C.J. Stroud — RB Joe Mixonand WR Nico Collins — and I could see Houston coming out with a run-heavy attack. The Texans offense hasn’t been efficient all season, so that might make sense.

Houston has tilted a little too far toward a pass-heavy approach on early downs, even after it lost Stefon Diggsand Tank Dell. The offensive line has allowed too much pressure; I’d say that’s why a run-heavy attack could make sense.

The Chargers defense has also been shakier against the run this season. Los Angeles usually likes to sit back in coverage — more than most teams — and avoid getting beaten by big plays. Houston could have success running the ball and in turn have more time of possession than usual.

Also, without Diggs or Dell, Collins’ explosiveness hasn’t been there. He’s averaging less than 10 yards per reception without those two on the field this season. That leans right into the Chargers’ ability to avoid conceding big plays.

On the other side of the ball, the Texans will be without their two starting safeties, which is very important. Jimmie Ward and Jalen Pitre have been key for them this season and move around the defense a lot.

Houston has been good against play action this season, and the Chargers implement that a lot in their offense. Justin Herbert is averaging 3.4 more yards per pass attempt with play action than without it — the Texans defense ranked first in success rateagainst play action during the regular season.

Herbert also has thrived when blitzed this season. He’s averaging 7.2 yards per attempt when the opposition doesn’t blitz and 8.7 when they do. Well, the Texans don’t need to blitz to get pressure with a 27.3% non-blitz pressure rate, which is seventh in the NFL.

The Texans also have been stout against the run, which is the hallmark of the Chargers offense. Houston has a top-three run defense in adjusted line yards allowed and is in the top four in yards allowed per game against running backs. Overall, this matchup suits the Texans defense very well.

Overall, this matchup is a good one for both defenses

Texans final injury report going into the wildcard game.

Shaq Mason.........OG..Knee......OUT
Teagan Quitoriano..TE..Calf......OUT

Denico Autry.......DE..Knee......Questionable
Christian Harris...LB..Ankle.....Questionable
John Metchie III...WR..Shoulder..Questionable

I see Mooch giving Scott Matlock as the “x-factor” for this game, plays FB, DL & STs for the Chargers, will be interesting to keep an eye out for.

Im expecting the L. The only question is really will it be a last second heart breaker or will it be Ravens style where I can say "Not surprising" and turn the bulk of my attention elsewhere.

I do hope to be pleasantly surprised but...I'm not holding my breath.
Depends on what Oline shows up. We keep thinking they are going to adjust the following week and it doesnt change. Chargers needed to watch one tape. Ravens, Thats all they need. We get on a winning drive and go for a field goal and Tunsil jumps and puts us out of fg range we are all gonna blow a gasket.

We can complain about injuries all we want but end of the day our best players coming into the season are playing today.

Sure we’d rather have Diggs, Tank, Pitre and Ward out there but they weren’t our all pro candidates coming into the season (depending how you felt about Diggs). The Chargers have lost players this season as well. Every team still playing at this point have and are going to need to perform without them.

CJ, Will Anderson, Danielle Hunter, Nico Collins, 1st team all pro Derek Stingley, Laremy Tunsil, Joe Mixon… these guys are playing today.

If this team is going to win they need to make plays. It’s playoff football this is what we have been waiting for… no excuses!

If our regular guys show up, and Tunsil does that a 19th time, I think we may finally know his true value - according to other teams !

Surely wish the little Tank were with us today .... he'd be looking forward to this !

Id say it depends what Oline shows, what OC shows and which CJ shows.

IF two of the three are their "good versions" we might have a shot.

I like CJ, not sold on Slow and the line needs to do better... but they all have their warts like them or not.

IF two of the three come out handling business I like our chances. IF all three come out hot proving they belong in the playoffs then I will be glued to the game. IF all three come out looking like they are part of the problem like they've done collectively all season... well... at least no body else won the AFCS by default.

Speaking of Tank, I saw the team warming up in Tank Dell T-shirts, I don’t take that as positive news about how his injury is looking towards future performance. That’s a tribute as if he had died, and those are his friends who are some of the closest to him. Does not look good for the future.

Is there anything Schultz can do that Pierce or Mixon can't? Why would you ever go with Schultz in the back field?
It’s like the twilight zone, you’ve replied with the exact same message I quoted!

Because they train the FB position as part of the TE group, so Schultz is the next man up to play FB, not the backup RB.

I’m not disagreeing with your point, just stating the reason why the position groups are the way they are.
