Texans random thought of the day

Did you not live in Houston in the 90's? Houston was the litmus test for standing up to an NFL owner who wants a new stadium. And we lost. And we would probably lose again if push comes to shove.
A lot of consternation; spitting and boot stomping and Bud got a huge deal in Tennessee.

My question is where could the McNairs go and have the same type of market they have here to buy tickets and merchandise? Or all that they make for having a NFL team in Houston? I don’t think San Diego or St.Louis is as good a market as Houston. Oakland? Eww.

And if they moved to Austin/San Antonio that would be the ultimate FU to Houston. I would think that. I wouldn’t want to root for them.

Sure paying billion dollars for a new stadium cuts into your profit margins, but maybe don’t expect a new one every 25 years?

And then think about the building costs and interest rate costs now compared to 25 years ago.

Sheesh.

Pay for the renovations.
You would stop watching the Texans if they relocated to Austin/ San Antonio?

Right. Wherever they go, theoretically of course, someone would have to build them a stadium. San Diego let the Chargers go because they weren't doing it. Same in Oakland. St. Louis lost the Rams because of stadium issues. Even a move to central Texas would require a new stadium because the Alamodome sure isn't going to cut it. Other than that, I don't think there's anywhere else to go. I really don't see Portland or Salt Lake or OKC as being better options than Houston. I can't see cramming another team along the East Coast, so there's really nowhere to go ... in this country. And I really don't see the McNair's packing up and moving abroad.

My guess? This go round will be for some renovation and upgrades. But it’s a shot across the bow. In about 5-10 years…that’s when they will push hard for a new stadium By that point, NRG will be roughly 35 years old, so at that point…it may be time.

They might settle for that for now, but if that doesn't get them back in the Super Bowl rotation, and bring them other major events, they'll be crying for a new, relocated yard soon enough. Not to mention we then get 20-30 years to pay for upgrades and renovations on a building they're leaving anyway in 5-10 years, AND then a new stadium? I don't know. Maybe I'll be senile AF by then and won't even know what football is.

But he really doesn't provide details
In other articles, he revealed that he was unhappy with the constant turnover of coaches/GM,s, and the fact that the HC's were always at odds and in a power struggle with the GM, and he was particularly unhappy with the communication between him, the HC and the defensive line coach at the time. His snaps took a nosedive when the Texans went to a 4-2 D.

Wait a minute. Seems like this writer and Omenihu are over rating his skills. When is 12.5 sack in three seasons and 19.5 sacks in six seasons make him a top pass rusher?

"Omenihu has become one of the top pass-rushers in the NFL, racking up 12.5 sacks over the past three seasons with the 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs."
The author is just glad that a football player is talking to him. The football guy is just happy that anybody is talking to him.

Not that he has been a barn burner, but part of this is may be attributed to the fact that he only played in half of the games of 2023 and 2024 because of suspension and residual of injuries?

I bet the Mormans would bankroll an NFL franchise to include the entry cost/front money of a new athletic stadium, and they've got the bucks to do it, and they are very entruepunerial (spelling ?).
I don't follow basketball much but it's my understanding that folks in Utah are very passionate
about their NBA team and college football is also really big in Utah.

Not sure if the chronicle stated.

But the Texans got a sweet ass deal when they got the stadium
Getting more back in rebates than the rent they paid to Harris County the last 4 years and didn't have to keep up with maintenence.
Tax payers paid for the team to play here over the last few years (based on the article)

Don't get me wrong. I love the Texans but damn.

The Chronicle story leaves me with the impression that there's atleast an implied threat by
Texans ownership of a geographical relocation of the franchise to realize their goal of a
new stadium.

In ESPN’s latest set of bold offseason projections, Aaron Schatz envisions the #Texans pulling off a massive trade for New York Jets star wide receiver Garrett Wilson — Stroud’s former teammate at Ohio State. The idea isn’t just about adding talent; it’s about reigniting chemistry that once lit up college football.

“Wilson was clearly unhappy in New York last season, but he’s a very talented young wide receiver,” Schatz wrote. “He has three straight 1,000-yard seasons, which is even more impressive considering the quarterback play the Jets have had. In 2021, Wilson had 70 catches for 1,058 yards and 12 touchdowns at Ohio State with C.J. Stroud as his quarterback.

The Texans can’t be sure whether Tank Dell’s knee will be healthy next season, and Stefon Diggs is a free agent. Other teams have had a ton of success reuniting college teammates, such as Joe Burrow with Ja’Marr Chase or Tua Tagovailoa with Jaylen Waddle. Why not do the same thing in Houston with Stroud and Wilson? The 25th selection and a Day 2 pick in 2026 should get this trade done.”

As the commercial says "I told you to run that thing!" I'm not sure that is enough to get Wilson but I would sure do it from our side. I'm sure Nick could come up with enough. I know people said I was crazy when I brought it to the board but I think Wilson can be taken. It would also be good if we could get him without offering Tunsil.

For me, I just don't look on previous deals or drafts or free agent signings to make a decision. That's why we have talent scouts and people like Nick. Just like a cornerback on an island who must shake off when he goes for an interception and misses and the guy goes for a touchdown. Go big or go home.

True but in trades I'm sure GMs use a historical comparison point as a reference to kick off conversation unless there is no precedence. In the end it's always either going to be win-lose, win-win or lose-lose.

Yep, and I doubt Caserio takes this risk again after getting burned in the Diggs trade. However if Wilson becomes available I could see Caserio biting the bullet and doing the deal.

I am not sure that Nick considers he was burned in the Diggs trade
Agreed. Diggs was on track for nearly a 90+ catch 1000 yard season. No way to predict he was going down with a non contact ACL 8 games in.

If anything, Nick was burned by Slowik and his plans for how to use Diggs.

His usage was like an upgraded Woods but he was capable of being more of a playmaker imo.

I’d give up the draft capital…but can we fit two stud WR’s under the cap, especially with a hyper expensive under-performing o-line…and you’ve got Anderson and Stroud on the docket soon.
Good question and my answer is yes! Anytime a young dynamic guy is available at a reasonable price at a desperately needed position, you should go for it. I think most of us agree that 2024 was a go for the Super Bowl attempt. Should 25 be different?
Wilson and Collins 2 great WRs, Stingley soon; Anderson and Stroud plus Mixon and the young guns like Lassiter locked; we would be good to go. A trade for a young Superstar playmaker would definitely be a feather in Nick's hat and also encourage significant free agents to join. Would be a much more significant move than bringing free agent Hunter on last year.

No headroom for any significant FA. Where is all this money under the cap coming from? Wilson would very likely sign a long term extension as part of the deal…at what 25-30. CJ may command 60. Sting…not sure, but they likely want to retain him. And Will? 25? That doesn’t include all the dead money including Diggs, plus the o-line soaking up that sun like a beach babe.

You would structure the contract like the Eagles do, high bonus low base. Then you move on from guys like Tunsil/Howard/Hunter after this yr.

I am all for that. I like Hunter but I don’t see him as much better than Grenard. And Howard and Tunsil are vastly overpaid.

I have posted several times about where money can come from and how money can be used such as roster bonuses that can later be converted to signing bonuses. Also, let's not pay people until we have to such as Anderson and Stroud. Both Stingly and Garrett Wilson can be set up in different ways to fit under caps for the coming years. Yes we do have to be cautious, however it is time to go 100% to build this team with long time players. Often we see a player come in that is 30 plus and we hope they do okay.
Garrett 25 and his base is <$7 as was Collins in the first year of his extension in 2024. For example we leave Wilson's deal as is for this season and his extension begins in 2026 as a 5 year 55 m $ GTD (Nico ~52) ROSTER BONUS $25 M (Nico $17 m SIGN BONUS). In 2026, roster converts $25 S BNS that retros at $5m + $13 m base = $18 cap in 2026. That's Nico's hit in 2026. Players don't care what the money is called as long as it's guaranteed.

The key for me is working new players or extensions under the same cap we have without adding to it. Removing players such as howard, autry, Mason and in my opinion Schultz gives you a lot of money to play with.

Our cap dropped again from just under $7 million to half a million.

2026 cap space for 29 players is ~$97 million. We also read recently that the NFL thought the salary cap is going to explode in the next few years the way they have readjusted there advertising dollar information. Another key is to hit on your day three draft picks; cheap deals like Bennett and udfas to continue control of your overall cap. I think Nick has been a master at this.

What would the Jets want to unload WR- Garrett Wilson?

Texans don’t have the draft picks to spare, with the holes that need to be filled.

Jets are in a big need for a LT……would LT- Laremy Tunsil be to their liking?

Would Tunsil be enough or do you think the Jets would want more? If yes, would Hutchinson or Metchie help move the needle?

Texans would need to go out and compete in the UFA LT market to either find an answer or bridge to cover the loss of Tunsil.

Wilson would take the need of a WR early off the table….unless the Texans landed LT- Alaric Jackson and WR- Emeka Egbuka was on the board at 25.

Might be crazy to have Nico, Garrett, and Egbuka in the same WR Room.

First no trade of Tunsil without a left tackle on deck whether that is Jackson or either Josh Simmons if healthy or Josh Conerly. I would love to have all three.

My first trade thoughts when I realized that Garrett Wilson could be in play, was LT for Wilson straight up as a post June 1st trade as that allows the most cap savings from Tunsil of about 21 million. I would use that money to extend both Wilson and Stingley for their first year of new deal 2026 not 2025.

Then I heard of the possibility of Jets wanting a round one and a round from 2026. That sounds low to me but it would get us to the table. The key is new coaching for New York may realize that they are without a quarterback, wide receiver Adams leaving and basically only Garrett Wilson on the offense. My thought would be Jets would trade 25 and pick 7 to get their QB. I can see the Giants making a move to number one for Ward. I think Jets and Raiders would be okay with Sanders and my understanding is Daddy Sanders is okay with both of those teams. This creates a problem of teams bidding against each other in upping the kitty. Free agency QB to Raiders would open that up.

Jets get Sanders; round two their Wilson replacement ; round three get their safety.

Texans get slam dunk in Garrett Wilson adding a star at a prime need position that may be even better than Nico Collins. Also be a alumni in former Target of Stroud makes it even better. I would offer Hutch, Metchie and Tank Dell.

My new Left tackle in hand, I open bidding for Tunsil. Let's say I am wrong and the Bears beat me to Alaric Jackson. I would go get either Simmons or Conerly even if I had to trade up a bit. In fact; if Simmons could start Game one , he might be even a better situation than Jackson money wise . Cleveland and Washington both should offer good packages for a left tackle. Cleveland's 33 and 67 plus a round one in 2026 would get the deal done.

I was always under the impression that the only taxes that were raised to pay for NRG were on hotel rooms and rental cars.

Also is anyone really shocked that Harris Co has mismanaged the funds/upkeep of NRG? Saw this disaster on the horizon the minute the county insisted on ownership of the stadium. I can easily see the McNairs moving to the burbs just so they can own the building, or be partners in the group who owns the building ala Dallas and LA

I am all for that. I like Hunter but I don’t see him as much better than Grenard. And Howard and Tunsil are vastly overpaid.
Disagree on Hunter. I think he was a significant upgrade over Greenard. Not just on-field but as a vet mentor for Will Anderson. A legit top 10 edge rusher.

That being said, Will is the one that will be in the running for DPOY. When Will gets his second contract they wont be able to afford Hunter opposite him. They will have to rely on developing draft picks and also Anderson ascending to the type of DPOY player that will make whoever is rushing on the other end look good.

I’d like to see the Texans take a late round flyer on DT/DE- Ty Hamilton (Nebraska). Excellent piece to develop behind Hunter.
I am hoping to have a rotation of Anderson, Derek Barnett and Horton for the next 3 years or so. A late day three or UDFA should routinely be brought in to try to find that diamond in a piece of coal.
