Texans random thought of the day

Seeing how we're ranked 25 in total D & Seattle is 26th... I'm going to say Clowney who?

Clowney & Mercilus are sidekicks, Robins... neither are Batman.
Actually, according to DVOA, Seattle is 17th, Houston is 27th.

PLEASE let's get off the old standard of ranking offenses and defenses based ONLY on yards. The Chargers don't have the 4th best defense, as yards allowed would indicate. Instead, they're 21st.

Ok. So our defense isn't as good as Seattle's. I still don't care that Clowney is gone. None of us wanted him gone. None of us could have stopped him from leaving, none of us could get him back.

LOLLLLL ... whooo wee. It gets good here at times. Yuuuup. Just like the QB doesnt impact the game by himself. A DE will not either. LOL Cmon man this is just casual stuff. Look at the metrics the graph provides. We arent talking about team defense, thats just moving goalposts. In humoring that take, you're right Clowney by himself with Watt INJURED AGAIN (who would have thunk it!!!! WAtt injured BEFORE Clowney NOOOOOOO!!!! His knee was supposed to blow up on October 23!!!) wouldnt have made the needle move to rank this unit much better, BUT do you think he makes one or two plays to influence a game? Do you think BY THAT GRAPH he doesnt occupy multiple defenders allowing his teammates to make more plays? Dude Mercilus IS DUMPSTER JUICE!! You dont need to even double the guy. He'll just run upfield and hope the QB runs into his arms. A TOTAL NONFACTOR. Offensive Coordinators gameplan for Jadeveon Clowney.

You know what WOULD have made a difference? KJAX + CLOWNEY. We latched onto the wrong DB, and gave away Clowney for nothing AND paid half his salary. LOL

Defenses dont tell the whole story either do they? Hmm. Whats Seattles record? Hmmm. Maybe their coach has something to do with it? Hmmm. Interesting. Maybe the offense is actually carrying the team while the defense deals with injury and a down year? Yup I'd say so.

Kinda like what should have happened here.

edit: FWIW Seattle also has the hardest schedule in the NFL. Houston? 11th.

I care in that he was given away for practically nothing just because OB had a hair up his ass about him. Emotional reactions over good football decisions will not work out well in the end.

Zach Cunningham is turning into an elite MLB right before our very eyes! Wont be long before McKinney gets phased out.
I dunno are you suggesting that there's redundancy with both Zack and McKinney on the field at the same time, and if so could one of them
be trade bait in the near term, which could be before or during the 2020 NFL Draft ?

Maybe that was all he was worth

Something like that! I dont think I can watch McKinney in pass coverage any longer. It makes me physically ill - with Cunningham being the better pass defender, and now even the better run defender McKinney is expendable.

What makes me physically ill is that the Texans "OC" can't scheme an offensive play where his RB is matched up against a MLB. How many times, across the NFL, do you see a RB matched up against a LB, or a TE getting 1 one 1 coverage from a LB? Beautifully designed offensive plays from great offensive minds gets that done. Texans, meh...not so much.

EDIT: I know LBers are supposed to cover the back out of the backfield. It just feels like OB doesn't know how to do that. Or won't for some reason.

need to foward this article to OBrien. Give him some ideas since RB inclusion routes are so new and "modern".

Even funnier... there are STILL people today saying this defense doesn't miss Clowney. They say that as we are ranked like 25th in the league.
........and as the Seahawks are ranked 26th in the league................:mcnugget:

I don't know what stat you're using, but I prefer DVOA. Texans are 27th, Seahawks 17th.
Evidently, the same stat that you were using when I responded..........apparently, your preference has changed quite quickly.

Yah, my bad. I know it looks like I'm changing metrics to support my argument. If you look at my past posts, you'll see that I always use DVOA when comparing defenses or offenses. Rankings based on just yards or scoring is not as accurate as DVOA IMO.

When I mentioned "like 25th", I was too lazy at the time to look up their actual DVOA ranking. I just remembered the last time I checked, they were in the mid-20s. My apologies.

Easily. 1 Probowler is better than 2 rotation players.
We could have had TWO PRO BOWLERS retained in KJAX and JD and the defense (in particular run D) would have been exponentially better. Just sayin.

edit: my bad KJAX was snubbed to the Pro Bowl, but was 2nd team All Pro (PFF)

Not just an opinion. It's a fact. Rankings by yardage doesn't tell anyone anything. Even Aikman's system does a better job than that.

Does anyone really think the Chargers have the 4th best defense?

Bro he was used totally different over there. When Watt went down a few years back, Clowney took over his roll and beasted.

We don’t have that now

After the secondary got hurt Clowney wouldn't have helped.

Clowney is a really good but not great player who wants to be paid like a great player.
His pay is irrelevant to this aspect of the conversation but since we’re already paying half of it the point is a push at best.

Premier talent impacts game. We have none on our DL. The dude that lead our defense the last time our star DE was hurt would probably do just as well when called on again.

Pay may not be relevant to you.

But pay is and always has been relative to the McNair's.

On SportsCenter I just heard Bill O'Brien comment that JJ is "working very, very hard and is making good progress"...
from 1 to 10, how possible/realistic is a return by playoff time?
1 being no way
10 being he'll be back

my guess is 2

I'm going to guess he comes back for the playoffs as a pass rush specialist. Should he? Nope

Will he be a differencemaker? I'm going with, Nope.

If he wants to come back and be successful later he needs to sit out the remainder of the season, including playoffs. As usual if we make it we will be bounced in the first round, why risk it. I'm tired of seeing guys rushed back onto the field too soon and being ineffective and risking further injury.

He has plenty of time to recover in the off-season. If he can play, he will

Completely random - and not entirely Texans related...

I have a couple of days off, without the work and family commitments I normally have (which is why I mostly just read and don't comment much), but just noticed I finally went over 1000 posts. Yay me!

<---- somebody shut this guy up!

I just realized if we win Saturday, we would have won the division 6 years in the decade. I wonder how that stacks up with the rest of the NFL outside of the AFC east which has largely been a one team race outside of this year.

Maybe it's a sign the next decade we'll finally be elite too XD
