Texans random thought of the day

Philip Rivers has always been one of my favorite players. Pissed Off Philip is also a real thing, it seems like he elevates his game more when the lights are the brightest and he's fired up and last night after that missed helmet to helmet call he just went super saiyan - he wasnt going to lose that game. I was wary of the Chargers before last night. I thought they had a very balanced team and played consistently at home or on the road (even though they barely get any fans at home games its sad - team should have went someplace else) I feel they will be the toughest out in the playoffs now that they are in the drivers seat for the #1 seed with such an experienced QB and solid defense, they are kinda similar to the TExans in that their offensive line is somewhat suspect too, but they are winning. Talk about a fantastic job by Anthony Lynn, year 2 and he's sitting at 20-10 and only getting better.

Chargers showed how you beat the Chiefs .. make a few stops and score. You have to keep up. That KC defense is not good even though they did get after Rivers last night they are susceptible to big plays and getting run on, exactly what the Texans like to do.
they are not in the drivers seat for the #1 seed. KC still has to lose or the Chargers will get to be a 13-3 wildcard. That would suck to host them, likely the AFC north gets a KC or Charger team at home

This is why the Colts' game was important. KC and the Chargers are battling for the #1 seed. Now, the Texans are looking at the 3rd seed and hosting either KC or the Chargers or possibly a rematch with the Colts.

we wont get the chargers or KC even as #3 seed AFC North will have worst division winner record and win that lottery. We will get Dolphins/Titans or Colts, Colts have a hot Dallas team and finish at Tennesee. I am starting to feel Miami will be sneaking in versus a second AFC South team. Hosting Miami feels better if we dont get a bye

Chargers have a 'tougher' stretch with BAL (7-6) and DEN (6-7) but KC travels to SEA (8-5) and then ends with Oakland at home whom gave them a run for their money in the last meeting. Whats interesting is that nobody can really relax. Everyone in the playoff race has to win these last few games. No resting players so it should make for an entertaining last few weeks to the season in the AFC and I think LAC showed they can win against the best teams in the league and IMO should beat both BAL and DEN easily. I think KC loses to SEA. I would say INdy gets one of the wildcards they way they are playing.

Don't count out Balt.

@patdstat : Whitney Mercilus is not happy and the Texans are playing 4/3 Defense

While at work, I listened to Pat Star's podcast (State of the Texans). Pat dropped a few nuggets the rest of Houston media hadn't provide. While the rest of the local media were stuck on Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts figuring out the Texans Game-plan, Pat was dropping bombs.

Apparently, the Texans are playing Mercilus out of position and don't be surprised if he's gone next year.

Tried listening to this podcast but found the audio awful. Listening using Spotify. You get this issues at all?

I listen to Texans unfiltered which is ok and around the NFL which is great for league wide coverage. Anything I'm missing out on?

I didn't listen to the audio, but I've always thought Merci & Vrabel really hit it off. Vrabel was making him a complete LB & not just an edge rusher. He was rounding out to be a complete player.

This year he's been more of a second thought.

Couldn't agree w/ his take more -- move JJ inside and let Mercilus get after the qb. What was interesting to me was that he didn't want to comment much more on the reason he thinks this isn't happening. So let me guess what he wanted to say -- JJ's putting his stats before what's best for the team. We're clearly a better pass rushing team w/ JJ, JD and Mercilus getting after the qb instead of Mercilus dropping into coverage but JJ's not going to get the same stats inside.

Or 2 of the best DCs in the game disagree about moving JJ inside full time. They decide afterall, not him.

Keeping JJ at DE helps the odds of keeping him heathy.

I expect that we will see JJ playing some DE in the playoffs. If not it will be because RAC sees JJ as the best pass rusher on the team and trusts him to make more plays than Mercilus can.

The health reason is why I've advocated for mixing it up and not moving him there permanently. As mentioned before -- get someone that can move the pocket inside this offseason and keep JJ outside. But with this personnel, our best pass rush is with him inside. He's already lining up there several times a game but when it's an obvious passing situation, he's usually 9 technique w/ Mercilus dropping into coverage.

Agreed, and even though they need OL/CB help badly, if Oliver falls out of the top 10 I trade up and take him. An OL with Watt/Clowney/Oliver would be simply awesome. Oliver is going to be a great player. IMHO

People have been saying that for almost 50 years.

Source? Come onnnnn, mannnn

Not in a mood to argue but.. No, No they haven't (bold Nonsense btw) and I'm not tossing out new scripture but the last few years (this year especially) seems like the game has moved away from smash mouth and delved into patty cakes.. per the new rules and regime.. not the players as they still want to go h.a.m.

I played ball from pre-teen through D-1 college and the way I was 'coached' was to annihilate your opposition.

I guess I'm a purist in that old school respect.

All that said.. I 'get' this new effort in protecting the player's well being BUT you don't play because you're a *****.

They wanna man up.. tbey just aren't allowed to anymore.

Do GM's hit on 50% of first-round picks?

Is there some evidence for that beyond Seth Payne, of all people, said so?

I am posting this with no background checking but if someone asked me the percentage of first round hits, I would say 75% or 80%. Information is easy to get on the guys. It would seem there should be plenty of knowledge about them. I find 50% to be low. Just for your Reference, I am not part of any Pro Football Organization. LOL

I find myself watching less football than I used too and I dont think I'm alone. I could be wrong though.

I don’t think you are alone. I know a lot of people that have lost interest in the NFL for various reasons. At the same time, though, the game is being followed ALOT more globally as well as ALOT more by females. That’s why ratings are up.

In other words, they are losing fans but gaining a lot more.

Well, there’s a lot of debate on what you consider a draft pick a “success”. Does the 1st rounder have to be a perennial pro-bowler? Do they have to be a starter for several years? How about a solid backup for 15 years? Or what if the player was a stud for a few years, but injuries shortened his career?

People have done several studies on this, and that 50% mark tends to be more accurate than 80%. You can google a lot of articles on this. Here’s one example of a fairly simple study. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/74206-what-are-an-nfl-first-round-picks-odds-for-success

So now the NFL is depending on women to replace long time fans that brought the NFL to it's greatest popularity?

Good luck with that. I do agree with the NFL's popularity being tied to global markets, but they're running the risk of further alienating fans in this country.

That’s true, they may be alienating some of their loyal long time fans. But at the end of the day, does it really matter if the fan base overall continues to grow?

Eventually if the main fanbase is made up of women/foreigners the NFL will start to lose popularity. Right now FF is helping carry God'ell's water.

Why do you say this?

I play in 2 leagues and some of the people wouldn't watch football at all without FF.

Because so many FF folks don't stick to one game at home so they don't show up in ratings. They watch Redzone, fantasy web sites, go to bars with multiple games on, etc. That hurts the ratings for individual games.

I don't like that idea at all.

Personally I like how Jj, Clowney, & Mercilus move from one spot to another. Only thing I would add, would be to change up their "role" after the snap.

There are logistic issues with that, I get that. At the same time, Jj or Clowney crashing inside is predictable. Or Jj going wide & the RB finding that lane inside.

We can use that to our advantage

The Texans pulled another one out of their a$$es and could possibly have the #2 seed. I'ma biotch a bit less. If Eli freaking Manning can have 2(!!!!!!!!!!!) :trophy:why can't OB have one? I see OB, as a coach as I see Eli Manning Just lucky. Here's to a 6 game winning streak. :wesmantexanfan:

Man this board is tough! Here we have the Texans having won 10 of 11 and currently with the #2 seed in the AFC (even if it's only for a few hours) and yet the majority of posters are acting like a spoiled kid who is crying because their bike isn't as cool as the kid around the corner. I don't know what some of you were expecting, but if you were told in mid September that the Texans had all but virtually clinched a playoff berth with 2 games left you would have called that person crazy.

I'm sure fvcking glad this board wasn't around when the Oilers were here.

Plus the offense they hate so much put up 29 pts today.

Really amazing to be able to do that without Fuller/Miller and behind this OL.

Fact is Watson looked like a rookie QB playing behind an expansion OL and he still made enough plays to win on the road in a cold climate.

Don't be disingenuous. You've declared them "not a contender."

Watson, Hopkins, JJ are carrying this team despite not because of OB.
