Listening to Seth Payne this morning describe Rick Smith in quite the positive light. He mentioned how GMS normally only hit on about 50% of their 1st round picks. Rick Smith after whiffing badly on Amobi Okoye went on a pretty dang good run of picking up quality players who performed at expectation. Kevin Johnson being the anomaly actually among names like:
Duane Brown, Brian Cushing, Kareem Jackson, JJ Watt, Whitney Mercilus, DeAndre Hopkins, Jadeveon Clowney, Will Fuller and Deshaun Watson. Thats a pretty damn good list of first rounders who for the most part panned out.
2nd rounders? Demeco Ryans, Connor Barwin, Ben Tate, Brooks Reed, DJ Swearinger, Sua Filo (playing good with Dallas go figure), Bernardrick McKinney, Nick Martin, Zach Cunningham .. that list is also not bad, with guys who are still effective pieces on other teams around the NFL.
He nailed a few 3rd rounders and later, but my point is that Rick Smith actually had a pretty good run, he struggled in identifying free agents and resigning homegrown talent, but his draft approach seemed to be stronger than most would give him credit for.
