Texans random thought of the day

A very interesting piece of Texans history for those of you that didn't know.

***************************************************************************************************

Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Gifted the “Texans” Name to the Houston Texans

I thought this was common knowledge. It was one of the reasons I didn't like the Texans name - it was already done by a hated (one way) rival.

I know Houstonians will hate this, but the single star is so much better a declaration.

So "Texans" is a "Cowboy" name. That's disappointing. Out of the names considered (Apollos, Bobcats, Stallions, Texans, and Wildcatters) I don't much approve of any of them. But, like the "Texans", whatever they would have called the team I'd have grown used to it.

From the beginning, I believed the name "Texans" was a lame, uncreative name for a football team. In the end, none of our opinions really made any difference.

I could not agree more. And while a good job was done with the color scheme and logo...red, white and blue is not creative either.

Out of the names considered (Apollos, Bobcats, Stallions, Texans, and Wildcatters) I don't much approve of any of them.

They are versions of been there and done that

Apollos- space name
Bobcats- Owner's name
Stallions- horse name w/Texans undercurrent
Wildcatters- oil industry

Might have taken less time to have a name like Bobcats than it did Texans.

The first year just made me feel like Forrest Gump saying Houston Texans.

I like the name. I don't think of a citizen of the state of Texas when I hear "Texans."

I think Sam Houston, Stephen F Austin, Juan Seguin, the Texans from back in the day that brings to mind an image of something like a Cowboy, but a lot smarter & tougher (If you know what I mean.

Sort of like TK I think of what I want a Texan to be: strong, friendly, courteous and willing to do what it takes but moral. I didn't like the name or the bull on helmet but grew to like them--a lot.

Storm moving towards here in Zavalla. Should lose satellite at kickoff. And I never thought I’d have to worry about a giant oak tree limb crushing me, but here I am.

You live in Zavalla? I'm familiar with that area, my parents owned some farmland on 69 outside of Zavalla for a number of years.

Texans is a great name. It doesn't matter if Jerry Jones had the rights to the name.

Texans is a sh!t name. You can't lay claim to a state when the other (prior) team has 7 appearances and 5 Lombardis.

Doesn't matter how long ago. Until you do it once you can't beotch.

Agreed. We should have claimed Nevada. Makes way more sense.

My uncle owned a plot at Sam Rayburn just outside Zavalla where we did some great fishing for years

do ya think that McNair was dumb enough to think he'd get Cowboy fans to flip by calling his team the 'Texans'..?? He had the energy theme, the aerospace theme, or the gulf coast theme to draw from and he went with the most unimaginative name possible.

The only worse name and even less imaginative I could think of would have been the Houston Houstonians..........:dangit:

The intro to the BoB coaches show on 610 ‘BoB says we wanna be a big strong physical team. Really? Is that why you go shot gun on 1st and goal at the 1 foot line!!!!! Damn he insists on running between the 20’s and insists on passing from point blank scoring range.

Did you see what happened when they tried under center from the 1 foot line!!!?

Can we get a RB who's explosion jumps off the screen.

I watch the highlights of other teams, there backs have burst and power.... I watch our Texans and it looks like my dad is out there......... he's 73

There must be some athlete on someone practice squad who can do something.

So... is your dad currently a free agent? Texans have tryouts every week, no promises though....

Yeah, my man. I have a little place and a bass boat out here on Sam Rayburn. I’ll take any member of this website out on the lake for some fishing. Texans make it to the playoffs I’ve got the spot for a party/BBQ.

It's been years since I've been out on Rayburn. The last time was so long ago it had to have been in the 90s. I hated the catfish from Rayburn, they tasted like ****. The bass were great if you fried them right. Honestly, I had more luck on those paid excursions into the Gulf for salt water fishing than I ever had catching fish in Rayburn. LOL

Rayburn is one of the nations premier bass fishing lakes. Also great for perch. I love some fresh crappie. Any bass I catch over 3 pounds I release.

I've been out of it for a while... do you not like anything on the OL? Or just the tackles?

Kelemente, Martin, Fulton... hate'em?

I like Fulton alot, I think Rankin can eventually be a starting LG and I value Mancz/Kelemete as valuable backup OL, but not as 16 game starters. They will have their moments but aren't every down players. IMHO

We would catch crappie under the bridge when available. I don't remember catching much perch. Mostly bass and crappie, both of which are good eating.

You know you don't have a lot of faith in your coach when the random thought that pops into your head while watching the game is: "I wonder if we've ever practiced a qb sneak?"

Hey....I'd have no problem adding another turd to this POS OL. At least he was a RD1-15 pick (if I remember right) and maybe a change of scenery would do him some good. Catch him the moment he hits FA.....today.

Get him signed on the cheap for the next two seasons and then let him learn the system behind Davenport.....I guess. Hopefully he'd be ready for a start after the Bye-Week. He could be the Swing tackle in the interim which could allow Rankins to move inside.

I still wouldn't have any problem with Mancz getting some playing time at Center over Martin.

I'll differ on Mancz. I think he's better than Martin but Martin gets the starts based on his draft position. Mancz had a pretty respectable season in 2016 as the starting center. Martin hasn't come close to that as a starter since 2017.

If I could get the Cowboys to bite on trading for Martin, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I'd have Kelemete move to backup OG/C. I'd sign Flowers and move Rankins to LG.

Cowboys are in need of OL help and maybe Jones wouldn't mind teaming up Zach's brother in Dallas. I'd be very happy if Gaine could coax a RD4 or RD5 out of the Cowboys.

By the time the Bye-Week hits, the Texans could try an OL that would look something like this:

LT- Flowers
LG- Rankins
OC- Mancz
RG- Fulton
RT- Lamm

ST- Davenport
OG/C- Kelemete
ST- Sharpe

+ 2019 RD4 or RD5 pick from Cowboys

Flowers is beyond horrible, why would you want him? I think Mancz had a much better supporting cast in 2016, he's not all that

Flowers would cost next to nothing to see if he has any real desire to make good on the early forecast in regards to his potential.

The only OL even worthy of being mentioned was Brown who was coming back from injury. Mancz had that type of season with Su'a-Filo next to him. I just think he would be better than Martin.

Yeah, don't know what I was thinking... must have been drumk, or working on it.

Alfred Blue fills in capably for Texans
Aaron Wilson , TChronicle Oct. 8, 2018
The absence of veteran running back Lamar Miller from the Texans' starting lineup made an impact on the offense.

With Miller out with a chest injury, the running game wasn't very effective.

Backup runner Alfred Blue did fill in capably as a receiver, catching a career-high eight passes for 73 yards. He rushed for 46 yards on 20 carries, averaging just 2.3 yards per run.

It was the third-highest yards from scrimmage (119) in his NFL career.

“I thought Blue ran tough," Texans coach Bill O'Brien said. "We wanted Lamar (Miller) to be active only to use him in an emergency situation, he’s banged up coming into the game, but he could have played tonight, but we wanted to try to see if we could give him a week to heal up unless we absolutely had to have him.

****************************************************************************************************

Blue gave the Texans a noticeable shot in the arm against the Cowboys. But it was basically with his receiving effectiveness...........not so much his run prowess. Take away his one long 17 yd run, and you get a very unimpressive 1.5 yds/carry.

Yeah, don't know what I was thinking... must have been drumk, or working on it.

You and me both. Got off the table about 3 hours ago....had an abscessed cyst removed from the middle of my back and right on top of the spine. I should've been drunk before I got there b/c those numbing shots didn't really do much.
