Slowik and the offense

Sorry Bobby, all game studies from this season suggest you’re the one not make any adjustments….just staying status quo while hoping for better results.
Defense doesn't have to decide on actual changes for an OC to have a need for changes in play-calling. If you keep doing the same things on the same downs, the defenders are going to just figure it out. An offense is supposed to be at least somewhat unpredictable.

For a half we did, and pass protection was ok. CJ made some bad plays, Bobby ran too much, defense tired out
Solid post, except i don't agree with "defense tired out"

I was very happy with the defensive additions once I saw Al-Shaair. To'o To'o is playing well & they added White.

DeMeco's got a Solid rotation & they're playing well.

They got the Lions to 3rd & 6 on their 50... would have forced a punt had they held. Championship level defense has to get that stop if we're getting past the divisional round when we're playing Allen, Mahomes, Jackson, or even Herbert.

Before this game, wasn't Jared Goff one of the most accurate productive NFL quarterbacks this season? None of the other NFL quarterbacks really scare me. I am more concerned with our overall team than other teams.
Detroit was supposed to curb stomp us and embarrass us. We did that to ourselves.

Agreed. Like DeMeco says, it's not about the other teams. Our guys need to do their thing best they can & everything will be everything.

I know it looks like Slowick is failing, but i still believe.

On point. I've thought the exact same thing but didn't realize it was zero times. When they get a turnover and it's at the plus 50 - take a shot at least half the time. Bobby has to go, and he needs to go now while there is still a chance to save the season. I strongly suspect I'm whistling in the wind on that one. DeMeco still has the favor of the fans for now due to the defense playing above its level...and the overall vibe he brings, and, of course, his history here. But he must stop being the DC and everyone's friend, and he needs to lay the hammer down on incompetence. He doesn't have to be an offensive expert to understand that 2 touchdowns in the second half spanning eight games is gross incompetence, and he cannot let that be the status quo, or he will start losing the team.
Kubiak had to be forced to hire a competent DC, wil Ryans have to be forced to hire a competent OC?

Nico coming back will help. But the second half offense is an issue with/without Nico playing. Completely inexcusable the way the offense has performed in the second half of games this season. Pin the blame on the coaches and the players, they all share it. They need to fix it.

The defense has played too good this season despite dealing with injuries only for the offense to fail them.
Good news is they played the 1st or 2nd best team in the NFL to the last play and should've won the game without their best playmaker on offense and defense watching on the sideline. This team is much better than most on here give them credit for. This season is far from over and they can beat any team they play. Just gotta make plays that are there to be made and everything will be fine. Yes, Slowik needs to self scout, the most encouraging thing is the OL is playing better and the team should be healthy in the next couple of weeks.

Bobby Slowik has NOT taken 1 single shot at the defense following these turnovers. Every freaking time it’s a run the ball on 1st, run the ball on 2nd down.
Really? I hadn't noticed that, seriously. That is just not knowing your job!! How many times have we heard announcers say after a TO, "take a shot" "the sudden change of momentum is real" And he hasn't done that after 18 turnovers?? I get that field position and time left in the game, etc. dictate what you do, but to run it every time?? Gross negligence!

This situation should have been addressed after 2 or 3 games. Not 8, and counting. You are correct, gross incompetence

Defense got 5 picks off him and made Allen look like Bryce Young! Not worried about any QB except Lame and his running and the Swifty bestie getting all the calls at crunch time.

As a bare min, Strausser needs to go. There is a festering wound on this team, and it’s bleeding this team out…it’s called the offensive line. Softer than a roll of toilet paper, and headed by Mr. whiple at LT. Don’t squeeze the charmin ladies. This is an infection slowly spreading to the entire body, and it must be excised now.

DeMeco is slowly losing me. As of today…yes I’m still bullish on him longer term, but he is going to lose the team and it’s fans if he doesn’t start holding guys acccountable, especially coaches. And if we are still dealing with unchecked gross incompetence next season, many of us will be turning on him and calling for yet another coaching change.

Stop feeding Joe Mixon the ball on every first and second down of every offensive series and you just *might* be able to fool the defense.
Joe Mixon: stop trying to carry the entire team on your runs where you know you're getting stuffed... aint working homie. Play every other offensive series. Selflessness wins games boi. (we do have other RBs on the team, no...???)

I did a drive chart because I too thought we were run heavy but maybe since it was so ineffective we all were all over reacting. Texans had 13 drives and 66 plays not counting punts and FG's. Ran 56% of the time on 1st, 31% on 2nd and only 20% on 3rd (because we had a long ways to go). Overall passed 59% of the plays. Scruggs holding calls were brutal, one TD lost and one drive Mixon was actually moving using the run. 5 times over the course of the game we ran on 1st/2nd consecutive. Looks like Dare had 1 carry, all others were Mixon and Stroud scrambles

Personally, I don't consider QB scrambles to be running plays. The call was to pass and the QB run was a safety valve when the pass play didn't work.
Depends on the type of QB.

QB sneaks are runs, although the Texans rarely run QB sneaks.

Extremely interesting analysis by Jonathan Alexander regarding the play calling Sun night. Great breakdown of how these tight formations are literally like a calling card. In short, Bobby is calling an extremely predictable game, and uses formations and plays that don’t work - over and over and over again week after week. He’s like one of those little dolls where you pull the string and there is one of 5 canned statements. After a while, the little girl knows what her doll will say next when she pulls the string. The doll has no means to change what she says. Likewise, Bobby has canned plays he pulls over and over with the same very poor result. Players gotta play better. These defenses are catching up and Bobby has zero answers. This is on Bobby and more broadly, DeMeco. Not to mention the line stinks. If you guys don’t have an e-subscription you are missing great analysis week after week. Alexander runs rings around McClain.

I haven't gone through the Lions game and probably won't. Moving on to Dallas, as Belichick might say. But at some point, I am going to look at the Texans outside running plays and WR runs. From an observational view, these plays not only are not working but tend to be drive killers. Yet we see these plays called on some of the most critical downs. The Texans cannot seal the edge, which makes these plays DOA. I don't think taking outside runs out of the gameplan is an answer because that makes it too easy for the defense. But whether it's a technical issue, execution, or the Texans are tipping the plays...it has to be fixed.

The WCO has basic running plays. A staple is a pitch straight back to the RB and the RB either uses the outside zone or cuts it back inside. Problem is Howard and Mason aren't having good yrs run blocking and Scruggs is in over his head, Tunsil is playing hurt and has never been a good run blocker. It's amazing that Mixon has been as successful as he has.

BTW, when the ol stinks your offense is going to stink. Put this together with Stroud not playing as well as he did last year and Nico, Diggs being out and you get what we are seeing. Yeah, Bobby deserves criticism, I've been critical of his going conservative in the 2nd half (Kubiak did the same thing.) but his hands have been somewhat tied due to injuries to Mixon, Nico, Diggs. Metchie really needs to step up in the slot, no more Woods, Hutch in the slot. Time for Metchie to show why Caserio traded up to get him in the 2nd rd.

My solution would be to put Fisher in for Howard if you want to improve the run game and play Kendrick or Broeker 3- 4 series a game at RG to keep Mason fresh.

That's like putting a Band-Aid on a bullet wound. These issues go way deeper and it's foundational stuff. The analysis I have seen proves that Bobby is a horrible play-caller and play-designer. Look at Alexander's work for one. Changing out Howard and giving Mason a breather is like rearranging the deck chairs on the titanic. This ship hit the iceberg and is now sinking with Captain Slowik refusing to turn the good ship lollipop, and DeMeco is either incapable of getting it corrected or is unconcerned about it - and either one is extremely troubling. There is no accountability on Kirby, something I wouldn't ever expect from DeMeco. I'm really disappointed in how he's handling this crisis - and yes, it is a crisis.

So, are you calling for a new play caller? Just have Ryans say Slowik needs to be better in front of the press? Do you have another solution? How should the "crisis" be handled?

I find it hard that a defensive guru like Demeco cannot coach up Bobby on what Demeco sees self scouting. When he watches the tape they must have a conversation from what Demeco sees and how he would attack the offense. That input must not be getting from Bobby to the game plan and / or execution as Demeco is very knowledgable and says his job is to coach up his coaches

Wait, are you saying Lamar doesn't scare you? LOL thanks I needed that humor today

Less than 200 yards avg and less than two touchdowns over three games? Not with a healthy roster by then. Don't set a blitzing DB without a backup to keep KJ from drinking over the blitz.
Solid dude will take care of him. Recognize his strengths but don't fear him.

You do know he is top 3 if not number 1 in all key passing metrics and is on track for 1k rushing yards right? As well as currently having the record for passer rating?

Keep doubting, my friend, keep doubting

What he or any other player does and other stadiums doesn't really concern me.
