Slowik and the offense

For those who are subscribed to the QB school on Patreon, there's a full CJ Stroud breakdown by JT O'Sullivan. Well worth the $5/month during the football season if you ask me. He goes through every snap, shows us how good Min defense was, how bad the penalties were, and the O-line and TE struggles.

Does he blame Stroud at all? To me, there were penalties which put is in obvious passing downs early and often so no running game to keep the pass rush honest, and then immediate pressure very quickly.

It looked to my untrained eye like Stroud patted the ball and couldn’t let it go a few times, but the broadcast didn’t show how the routes were developing so I’m unsure, was he holding onto it and hesitant or were his receivers shut down?

Without wishing to overreact, there were a couple of games last season, the Panthers game in particular springs to mind, where the Offense just never got anything going consistently and Slowick looked like he had no answers. It is a bit concerning, have to offer some sort of threat every game but here we are building up 2 years worth of tape where we can be shut down for a game at a time.

I wonder how people think this happens. Do they think the OC says 87, your man is 58. 78 you block 54. 76 block 99.

I know he took the blame for it, but really he doesn't know how the defense is going to line up so he has no way to know who is going to block who on any given play. They have rules & however those rules work out, they work out. That's one of the reasons DL like to shift late in the count. That's why the protection is called at the LOS.

Yes. But the offense has checks and can change protections. You can't allow the defense to lineup and dictate the top pass rusher being blocked by the rookie TE. It's a chess match and the Vikings got the checkmate. I'm convinced it's something than can be fixed. But it's also something that needs to be fixed.

Stroud had his bad moments, too. Int #2 is on him, there were at least a couple more interception worthy plays where he got lucky. He also had his typical CJ awesome moments. But in general, yes, they just never got anything going.

Agreed, I wonder who's calling protections at the LOS? Not that it would've mattered last game.

What is failed to be taken into consideration is that Slowik is working with a 3rd and 4th string running back when calling those plays. Talent played a role in execution.

That doesn’t mean excuse him from some of his playcalls though. Just saying his play calling will be better.
We had one good game where our run game looked decent, and that was against the Colts, who have proven to the league that they cannot stop the run. The jury is still out on wether or not our 1st and 2nd running back will help Slowick call a better game than he has thus far this season.

Today on Sports Radio 610. Stoerner was discussing the running game and mentioned that Schultz who is a notoriously terrible blocker is either staying in to block or being used as a lead blocker on too many occasions.

Also, he mentioned that on several plays, Schultz's lack of effort when blocking is alarming. It's like a guy who is pouting at his lack of touches while being asked to do something he's never been comfortable doing. It's an interesting listen at the 5:23 PM clip.

Having a running back that can get positive yardage on 1st or 2nd play calls will be a difference maker to any OC. Right now on 1st and 2nd downs they are averaging negative yards based on the average 3rd down they are seeing. Not having the right personnel and penalties are killing the offense.

Having players that can execute and be play makers will help any OC.

That is why a lot of OCs under under top tier QBs move on and fail. Think Belicheck assistants and to a lesser degree Reid assistants.

You have to have playmakers that can execute. Mixon is one. Stroud is another. If the Oline isn’t getting penalized that helps even more.

So while what you say is correct it is too small of a sample size to make that judgement.

Don’t think Mixon gets back this week. But I do think Pierce will…

And adding Quitoriano in for some heavy TE packages will let the OL come forward and attack which would fit well with Pierce’s style.

I think Stover gets the lion’s share of FB snaps with Brooks on IR. They had been using Schultz there a bit, but I think that is getting “too cute” imo. Schultz just doesn’t have that glass-eating mentality needed from a lead blocker.

But Quitoriano gives the team a legitimate big bodied Y TE to let Schultz/Stover move around the formation.

There’s a lot of reports saying Mixon is a go for tomorrow.

It doesn't matter which playmakers are available if stupid penalties on the OL continue. The Texans have had several big plays and 1st downs negated by OL penalties.
It's odd how some coaching trees blossom and some wither away.

I would still activate Akers and have four RBs ready to go.
If you activate Akers and Pierce then you lose a ST player. Which is strange because both should be able to fill that role as a backup RB. Heck, Dare would play long snapper if this team needed him to do it!

I wouldn't call Schultz a notoriously terrible blocker but I would call him a notoriously inconsistent one. He has some excellent blocks on his tape. I think the idea of him being an awful run blocker comes mostly from a heavy dose of confirmation bias.

So you’re predicting he’ll get hurt in this game? And are you saying they’re rushing him back too soon?
I'm predicting that he isn't healed from the high ankle sprain and will likely aggravate that injury and/or suffer a compensatory injury. I don't think the Texans are rushing him back too soon, rather Mixon is rushing himself back too soon.

13 rushing attempts for 102 yards and a touchdown.
3 targets with 2 catches for 30 yards and a touchdown.

Aren’t you glad he played and didn’t re-aggravate that sprain?

Big impact on this offense.

The OL needs to be shuffled. I doubt they do it this week on a short turnaround, but after the Jets they need to rethink their lineup. Green is a major liability.

Slowik's offense and feel for the game isn't there. He needs to to do a faster tempo, more quick passes, and more creativity in the run game. The WR screen and the HB toss were two horrible calls at terrible times. He has to get better

I was surprised Patterson got the opportunity over Kendrick Green. Too bad he got hurt. His only drive ended in a td for the good guys!

I think Slowik is still learning on the job. As you mentioned it doesn't seem like he has a feel for the offense. I'm sure his playbook is fine but how he calls the game is a head scratcher. I'm sure the OL and injuries have something to do with it but too many times our offense goes stale for long stretches.

I’m on board with what many have mentioned for a quick fix…..have Howard move to LG (if Patterson isn’t cleared to play) and have Fisher start at RT. On the other hand, could Fisher start at LG in a pinch?

Howard at LG is barely better than Green if he even is better than Green.

Howard is miserable at G

My real desire, keep Tunsil at LT. Move Scruggs back to LG since he has familiarity with the position. Patterson (when ready) goes back under Center. I have not cared for Mason this season or much last season and would like to see Broeker in at RG. I’d move Howard’s under performing arse to Swing Tackle and insert Fisher in at RT. I believe 4 of the 5 pieces would play the game with a much nastier demeanor in the run game and would at least play pass pro until the whistle blows.

What I would do…..climb over the Colts in the off-season and sign their C- Ryan Kelly. I think Kelly would be a perfect match for this OL. A solid veteran that could be flanked with Scruggs at LG and Patterson at RG. Tunsil would stay at LT and Fisher would replace Howard at RT. This lone signing could make a massive difference with the OL.

LT- Tunsil / LG- Scruggs / C- Kelly / RG- Patterson / RT- Fisher

Didn't they specifically say he couldn't? I thought they did at least when mentioning that Ty was the one who could.
