Lovie had refused HC talk before then suddenly agreed after Culley was fired and the Flores suit. I don't know if Smith made demands but it fits for me.

Oh no mistake has been made. Lovie made it perfectly clear to Cal that he had to have the final say on the hiring of all coaches and players (no silly Culley or Gannon games here) before he would agree to accept the HC job. I don't think there is any doubt that Lovie did in fact hire all his coaches and that Lovie and his coaches were responsible for making all of the 2022 draft picks. If there is any doubt then you should check to see if your headphones are working.

After experiencing the embarrassing laughing stock circus from last year, which included fiscal irresponsibility and the gross mismanagement of money in Caserio's first year, which also went along with (2) disastrous searches for HC, Cal readily agreed to hire Lovie in less than 24 hours. Cal now knows exactly what he's got and the mistakes he has made and why Cal was so quick to hire Lovie as the official babysitter of the Houston Texans.
Hiring Culley was a fiscal mistake. I dont really see any other major fiscal mistakes that set the rebuild back. Lovie did make hiring his assistant coaches a condition on him becoming HC. I'm just glad Caserio and Lovie are working together. Caserio is actually quite smart to listen to what his coaches want and how the scouts evaluate those guys. Especially since Lovie knows the types of players he wants to get, so that his defense will have its best chance to be successful.

I'm not making excuses, history says it takes 5 years to build a SB contending team. How many years were the Bengals/Browns really bad before they turned around. If the Texans do what the Bengals did and spend in fa this could move the timeline up by a yr or so.
That was 15 years ago my friend. No owner is going to wait 5 years to make the playoffs. I don't care how bad your roster is, i don't care what happened previous to you, none of that matters. It doesn't take 5 years to be 1 of 7 out of 16. The Brown went from 1 and 32 to the playoffs 3 years after that and that's with 3 coaches. This is Caserio 2nd coach in 2 years. He has 2 1st rd picks in the next 2 drafts. This isn't an expansion team, yet he has draft capital like an expansion team. If he drafts well and get the qb sorted quickly, it doesn't take 5 years.

He had no other choice but to treat this team like an expansion team. Bull O’Brien not Rick Smith screwed all over this team. Then addin the Watson crap.

It basically was an expansion team that BOB/Derrick left behind. Having no 1st/2nd rd picks set the rebuild back by a yr. So whether you want to believe it or not it's going to take another 3/4 drafts to become a true contender. They may make the playoffs before then but they won't be a true contender. Now if Calhoun is willing to spend in fa starting next off-season then the time frame may be moved up by a yr.

Who drafted Derrick?
What does that have to do with the price of peanut butter. He drafted more than just Watson. And like I told you before it was a collective decision between him and O’Brien. Drafting Watson was not the darn problem. The problem was Bill O’Brien not have the type of handle he led everyone to believe he had. Dude put on a darn show on Hard Knocks. Acting like he was this strong disciplinary type coach.

Earth to steelbtexan, you do understand that you're talking about Daniel Calhoun McNair, right?

I'm saying the McNir's either did or didn't know. Lawsuits were brought and settled dismissed.

CnD isn't known for just making crap up, if you dont believe me.

He drafted most of the players from Derrick/Cunningham/Mercilus etc... that basically left this team as an expansion franchise. And yes BOB not only carried on this trend but actually somehow made things worse by extending said players as well as guys like Martin.

They had the 2nd oldest roster in the nfl last year and he hired a coach he had no business hiring. It was a wasted year from a team building aspect. Again, you act like Cal haven't spent money in free agency. Hell, he's paying 3 caoches and 3 gms as we speak. Browns and Bengals, 2 of the worse run, cheapest franchises didn't take 5 years to make the playoffs and they didn't have 6 1st rd picks in 3 years.

which one?
There was a guy who was fired, I can't remember his name that a female employee sued . Shortly after that RS left, followed by Palcic and then Rootes.

Google it, bottom line is CnD isn't known for making stuff up. If he says something you can take it to the bank.

Lowery I believe was the guys name.

That is not the reason why those people are gone. You guys have to stop spending certain things as such.

There was a power struggle going on in that front office. Information was being leaked out was another reason certain people were fired.

Rick also stepped down because of his wife situation.

Nope it wasn't a wasted year. He found 5-6 guys that can play out of the draft and fa. That's a pretty good off-season since he didn't have rd 1-2 picks.

They won't be the oldest team by the time they become a playoff team. They were taking shots on guys like KGH/Thomas/Miller/Collins etc...

Plus whether you like it or not Caserio/Lovie/Pep most importantly found their QB.

Hardly what I would call a wasted year.

What a wasted year is IMHO is a slightly above avg QB that's a sexual predator eating up 40 mil of cap space. Knowing that albatross of a contract is going to prevent you from winning a championship. Look at history and learn from it.

I don't believe anyone on this message board has inside information. I like CND with his injury analysis, but i don't believe anyone on here who has inside info. A close friend of mine used to work with the person who did the contracts and such, that doesn't mean I was privy to being an insider.

Spin it how you want, but it was a wasted year in my opinion with a bunch of holdover players especially at running back most notably. The Bengals and Browns are 2 of the youngest teams in the NFL right now. Jacksonville is also a young team. In my opinion Culley and an old roster was a waste of time and space. They weren't winning anymore than 4 or 5 games with an old roster. All it did was set the team back a year further. Even in rebuilds, sometimes the guys that start the wheels aren't the ones who see the benefit. I hope they pull it off soon. We know how Houston is in terms of fan support. You went to the games last year, it was sad.

One correction….Watson had no part in what the team looked like in 2021. Cal and BOB pretty much sunk this organization to being worse than a expansion team. Watson had a nice 2020 season while QB’ing this hot mess of an expansion team.

If anything….Watson returned to the Texans and Caserio enough building blocks in draft picks to allow the team to really expedite their rebuilding process. Sure, Watson’s legal situation reduced the team’s return, but how much more would many of us had expected over what they received?

I’m happy this chapter in Texans history has finally been closed and the new chapter began last season. This season has “nice step” written all over it.

I honestly don't understand this & would love for you to explain.

I can understand if the Texans gave away draft picks for 8+ year veterans, but they didn't.

They swapped future picks for Canon, so that didn't hurt the 21/22 draft. The picks they gave away were for 4/5 year vets. They didn't make the team. That's similar to 6th & 7th round players who most likely won't make the team.

& still we have 6th & 7th round players who did make the team.

We've got plenty of young players on the team. & we're going to be getting a lot younger through the draft in the next few years.

I agree if the plan was to hire Culley for two/three years then fire him, it would be a waste of resources. Buy this has worked out better than that plan. Lovie & Pep being carried over from last year salvage last year imo. We should have a competitive team next season

Agree.
All pointers indicate a reasonably positive outcome.
Only thing now will be the factors outside of team control, like injuries.

So Derrick eating up cap and generally being a distraction, as well as his perverted actions that lead to the Hopkins trade had nothing to with last seasons bad record or the need to rebuild? LMAO

They had to start a rookie QB because of this POS. I would say he was directly responsible for there bad record if you think he is as good as most around here do.

I think you're partly right though, because they won as many games with him as without him, so you could make a case that they didn't miss him at all.

I believe the general consensus is that Momma Watson went to Momma McNair and said this Hopkins kid is a bad influence on my boy and needs to go. And so Momma McNair ordered Hopkins to be dealt.

I think there's also some belief that Hopkins was kinda guiding DW so that he didn't get as out of control.

Watson had no input in the deals OB executed or contracts he extended. He left the team when they didn't include him in selecting the new GM and HC. What Watson did off the field was his mess and he pretty much kept that to himself b/c the team and OB did hand him that new contract.

Hopkins blew up on Bill O’Brien after that embarrassing loss. Then in the off-season demanded an raise/extension. Hop said out his own mouth, he knew Bill wasn’t going to give him what he wanted and that he forced his way out Houston. Now are we saying he lied?

Thank you. It’s pretty amazing to me how people on this board spins information around here. Hopkins actually got on Watson for partying too much during his rookie year.

Now? No, not now. This was one of the rumors that got started when DW said he wasn't going to play for the Texans. So it's about a year old or so.

I dont care to rehash the 2 Mamma's story again. But it happened.

I wish Caserio would've been the GM back then and things probably would've turned out much better.

Caserio could've been the GM for the price of the Howard draft pick.

Again that had nothing to do with Watson or any type of influence. Crazy how you only believe those people you trust on this forum. I said several times Hop told Watson during his rookie year, that he needs to slow down and chill out.

The Texans should’ve been had Caserio but the Patriots/Bill Belichick was playing hardball.

I said he had nothing to do with Watson bull crap. Watson acted alone. Players said Watson started acting funny after his rookie year. And he was always bragging about the materialistic things he acquired.
