NFL Random Thought of the Day

During the last Combine, Fautanu was reported to have been medically red-flagged for "a knee issue that would be expected to significantly affect his longevity in the NFL." Many questioned the validity of the report. But from what I have been able to discover is that he has been found to have significant articular deficit in his right knee. In the past I have always pointed out the way a right vs left-side OL can be affected differently for a right vs left-sided arm/shoulder or lower extremity injury. Fautanu is being switched to the right side in order to transfer the major mechanical forces to his left knee, and minimize further trauma to his right knee...............hopefully preserving additional longevity in the NFL.

Fautanu: Adjusting to right tackle just a matter of time
By Josh Alper
Published June 4, 2024 09:52 AM

Steelers first-round pick Troy Fautanu signed his first NFL contract on Monday and that means he can devote his full attention to transitioning to the professional ranks.

Part of that process includes getting comfortable with playing a new position. Fautanu played left tackle at Washington, but will be playing on the right side in Pittsburgh and he discussed how much of an adjustment he’s making in order to get ready to man the spot this fall.

“You constantly push off one leg thousands and thousands of times,” Fautanu said, via Tim Benz of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. “Then you switch to the other side, and you aren’t really used to pushing off the other leg. It’s just a matter of time. I’ve already talked to my strength coaches. They already know it’s an area I want to improve — the strength of my left leg. I’m so right-leg dominant after playing the left side so long; it’s just something I’ve got to work on.”

The Steelers picked up left tackle Broderick Jones in the first round in 2023 and a successful transition for Fautanu should set them up with bookends on the offensive line for years to come.

All the stress shifted to the left knee...........MCL injury.

The team says he will be out 2 weeks. He'll be lucky to be ready short of 4 weeks.

Steelers first-round pick Troy Fautanu ruled out vs. Chargers after knee injury at practice

Steelers rookie right tackle Troy Fautanu will not play on Sunday against the Chargers.

Fautanu, the Steelers’ first-round pick this year, started at right tackle last week but suffered a knee injury on the practice field on Friday. The Steelers initially announced that he would be questionable, but today the team announced that Fautanu will miss the game.

How much time beyond Sunday Fautanu misses remains to be seen, but Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Fautanu is expected to be sidelined indefinitely.

Dolphins sign QB Tim Boyle to active roster

With Dolphins starting quarterback Tua Tagovaila on injured reserve following his most recent concussion, the Dolphins have added their second new quarterback to the 53-man roster.

Just days after signing Tyler Huntley from the Baltimore practice squad, the Dolphins have elevated Tim Boyle from their own practice squad.

The move gives the Dolphins three quarterbacks on the active roster. By rule, one of them can dress as the emergency third quarterback for Sunday’s game at Seattle.

The only question at this point is whether Huntley or Boyle will be the backup, with the other being the third quarterback. Skylar Thompson is the starter during Tua’s absence.

Four players fined for hip-drop tackles in Week Two

The NFL is continuing to crack down on hip-drop tackles via the league’s disciplinary process, if not with penalties on the field.

Four players were fined for hip-drop tackles in Week Two, the league announced: Chicago’s T.J. Edwards, Kansas City’s Nick Bolton and the Jets’ C.J. Mosley were fined $16,883 each. The Rams’ Desjuan Johnson was fined $5,191.

The league did not explain the discrepancy in the fine amounts, but may have decided that Johnson’s hip-drop tackle was less blatant than the others.

The NFL defines a hip-drop tackle as when a defender wraps up a ball carrier and rotates or swivels his hips, unweighting himself and dropping onto ball carrier’s legs during the tackle. The technique has caused several injuries in the past and the league wants to get rid of it, but players have complained that it’s ill-defined and question whether it will be enforced consistently.

Some players can deal with a win at all cost mentality, others not so much.
Yep, can’t argue with the results. Mayfield’s Bucs remind me of the Foles-led Eagles team that won the Super Bowl. You can win a championship and “have fun” doing it. But I don’t know of many dynasties in sports that varied from the Brady/Bellichek/Pats intense obsession with winning.

On a different note, I like that Caserio and Will Anderson have said this offseason, “The Texans aren’t for everybody”. That tells me they are bringing a highly competitive environment to the team as well.

The team reports that Justin Herbert will be a game-time decision. He just sustained what was reported as a "mild" high ankle sprain. To put him out there 1 week post injury trying to play thru it, is an open invitation for aggravation of the injury and an even longer rehab..................or a compensatory injury...................not to mention how questionable his performance (esp., mobility) would be.

The Panthers have reported that several teams have contacted them with interest in a possible trade for Bryce Young. The Panthers say they are not interested in trading him......................that's their public stance.............for now.............

Report: Bryce Young benching “should be viewed as a break”
By Mike Florio

Yes, dysfunctional teams do dysfunctional things. And the currently dysfunctional Panthers are taking a page from the recently dysfunctional Jets.

Carolina is spreading the word that the benching of quarterback Bryce Young will be temporary.

That’s the Sunday Splash! from the media outlet partially owned by the Panthers. The benching, per the report, “should be viewed as a break.”

The Jets did the same thing with Zach Wilson two years ago. And it didn’t work.
It won’t work here, either. Two games into the season, Young is out. So he’ll be back in later? Why give up on him now?

For some teams, the benching might be a nod to the will of the locker room. Elsewhere, it’s the coach’s call. With the Panthers, we know from experience that owner David Tepper’s spoon is the biggest and deepest in the stew.

Regardless, the idea that sitting Young down with the idea that he’ll be back later is the kind of move made by teams that don’t know what they’re doing, or how to do it.

Or maybe it’s just a clumsy effort to generate trade leverage. To argue that they haven’t decided to move on from him. To pretend that they fully intend to keep him around in the hopes he’ll become Carolina’s franchise quarterback.

Panthers fans should hope that’s what happening. Because if the Panthers genuinely believe the best way to groom the No. 1 overall pick is to bench him after two regular-season games and then re-insert him into the fray at a later date, the organization has far bigger problems than previously realized.

Stupid decision to play him this soon.

Justin Herbert left the game after being sacked in the third quarter, aggravating a high ankle sprain sustained last week

Watson had never taken as many sacks as he did in Today's loss to the Giants.......................... not even when he played for the 4-12 Texans in 2020. :D

His legs can no longer compensate for his deteriorating skills..............

On one of the plays I saw Watson passing, a pass rusher caught his throwing arm from behind and pulled it back after the ball's release. Will see if he ends up on the injury report or not.
'

Watching Justin Hebert, it was evident that he could not plant his injured rear leg firmly....................before the sack that re-injured his high ankle sprain.

The team feels that it is only bruised ribs.............until serial x-rays or CT scan is performed, rib fracture is in play.

God I’m so tired of the chiefs getting the benefit of calls at crucial times. Last week they got a crucial PI call on the Bengals defense that really could’ve been a no call that set them up for the game winning FG. This week their CB absolutely mauls Pitts in the end zone and no call.

This is the kind of stuff that makes you think the NFL is rigged.
