NFL Random Thought of the Day

Jensen's knee injury occurred 2 weeks ago, and the Bucs keep saying that his knee swelling has made it impossible to ascertain a diagnosis of his injury. I've never had a case or heard of swelling being a reason for not diagnosing a knee injury, especially for this long a period of time following the injury. I guarantee the Bucs know the major injury(ies) that they are dealing with. The only question in my mind is why are they hiding it.

Come on Bucs, take a crack at it...........

Ongoing swelling delays final diagnosis for Bucs center Ryan Jensen
Posted by Mike Florio on August 14, 2022, 11:48 AM EDT

The Buccaneers began training camp with center Ryan Jensen suffering a serious knee injury. The Bucs still don’t know how serious it is.

“The swelling hasn’t gone down and they’re not exactly sure on the timing,” coach Todd Bowles told reporters on Sunday. “He may or may not come back, if at all. They said in the next week — we should know something by this week. Because we didn’t have an answer, I didn’t give a comment. I wasn’t trying to be mean or anything. They just told me to wait until the swelling goes down because it could go one of two ways and we are just waiting for it.”

Previously, Bowles has said Jensen will be gone until November or December at the earliest.

The fact that it’s taken so long for the swelling to reduce to the point that a clear diagnosis can be secured won’t create much optimism for a best-case scenario.

I think JC Jackson benefitted from the Hoodie effect. All those cb's played alot better under Hoodie than anywhere else. Malcolm Butler falls into this also. I mean, that's his area of strength, that's where he cut his teeth. My cousin was drafted in the 5th rd last year and I told him he couldn't have went to a better situation as a db.
Jackson had real talent coming into that draft. But he had baggage that made him an udfa. I wanted RS to pick him but knew he wasn't Texans Worthy.

You're looking at it from hindsight 20/20 my friend. Every law has a name on it for a reason. You're talking like new information has been here from them the outset. Why you think kids don't ride in the back of pickup trucks anymore? Why you think there are full belts across the shoulders vs lap belts. The car wrecks you speak of with the collisions where not spoken of in the 70s and 80s. It wasn't until guys started committing suicide because they had these terrible headaches and they couldn't remember their kids names. There is a reason youth football participation is down from normal numbers. Even when the new claims came in, nfl denied it like it wasn't possible or didn't happen.
I'm still in the crowd of if they didn't know, they should have known. Of course I also think they shouldn't have changed the rules to make NFL football more like arena football, where it's a penalty every time there's a hard hit, or QBs. are a protected species.

300 Out Of 650 Black NFL Retirees Qualify For Financial Compensation After Neurological Test Rescores

Aug 12, 2022
After tests of 650 ex-NFL players were reevaluated, their neurological test scores were updated. Since then, 300 of the players are now eligible for the National Football League’s $1 billion concussion settlement after the elimination of test adjustments based on race.

The law firm Seeger Weiss LLP stated that thousands of other Black players can request new tests to determine whether they’re eligible for a payout. Attorney Christopher Seeger issued a statement, apologizing and claiming he is part of getting it fixed.

“I was wrong. I didn’t have a full appreciation of the scope of the problem,” Seeger said. “You think you know everything. Sometimes you don’t. But the closer I looked, the more I realized that this had to go. I’m really sorry that anybody, any client of mine in this program has been made to feel that way. That is a big mistake. It was a failure of the system. I’m a part of that. But I’m also a part of getting it fixed.”

You saw Aqib Talib as part of the pack actively pursuing the coach..............no attempt on his part to hold back the attack.

Report: Aqib Talib was “just feet” away from the shooter in fatal incident at youth football game
Posted by Mike Florio on August 15, 2022, 11:06 PM EDT

The brother of Aqib Talib allegedly shot and killed a man at a youth football game over the weekend. Aqib Talib was reportedly close to the gunman at the time the incident happen.

TMZ.com reports that a video of the incident shows that Aqib Talib was “just feet” away from the man who fired the shots. His brother, Yaqub Talib, allegedly pulled the trigger.

Aqib Talib’s lawyer has issued a statement admitting that Aqib was indeed there at the time of the shooting.

“Aqib was present when this unfortunate incident occurred and is very distraught and devastated over this terrible loss of life,” the lawyers statement explains. “He would like to convey his condolences to the family of the victim and to everyone who witnessed this unfortunate tragedy.”Yaqub Talib turned himself in on Monday. Aqib has not been charged with any crime. Based on a video obtained by TMZ.com, “Aqib was in the middle of the incident,” but “he is never seen participating in the violence.”Talib spent a dozen seasons in the NFL, playing for the Buccaneers, Patriots. Broncos, and Rams. He has been hired to serve an analyst for Amazon’s Thursday night pregame show.

Last year, Becton lost his season to an MCL rupture and dislocated patella (knee cap). He chose not to have his patella surgically stabilized, while he did have his MCL repaired. Once dislocated, there is an increased risk for repeated dislocation. That is exactly what happened yesterday, taking with it a chip of bone. After a second dislocation, he will undoubtedly undergo stabilization surgery along with the removal of the bone chip........another season-ending surgery for Becton.
The Jets kept delaying surgery, reporting that he may be able to return this year. Becton has undergone surgery on his knee, and he will not return this season.

Lonnie Johnson picked up from waivers by the Titans. Hey Lonnie, I know the pickens are slim, but let me pick your brain anyway about the Lovie and the Texans. :)

Stephen Ross Reportedly Intends On Changing Ownership Succession Plan Of Miami Dolphins From Bruce Beal To Jennifer Ross
Aug 12, 2022

According to Ben Fischer of Sports Business Journal, Miami Dolphins Owner Stephen Ross has begun taking steps to keep ownership of the franchise within his family. Ross reportedly intends to change the succession plan from limited partner Bruce Beal to his daughter, Jennifer Ross. Beal is claimed to be seeking approval to ascend to controlling owner, but the process would halt if Ross’s plans for succession go through.

Ross and Beal were both punished by the National Football League for alleged tampering after the league finished its investigation into Brian Flores’ tampering allegations. Ross was relieved of all of his current committee assignments, which included the finance, media, international and legalized sports gambling committees. Beal was fined $500,000 and is prohibited from attending any league meetings through the end of the 2022 season. The punishment also included the Dolphins organization losing its 2023 1st-round pick and 2024 3rd-round pick.

The NFL has more than enough to act on Kamara. The question remains why haven't they? They certainly can't be worried about a Fed lawsuit. :shades:

Report: Suspension For Saints Star Alvin Kamara “Unlikely” To Come In 2022

Aug 15, 2022

With the most recent pushback of Alvin Kamara’s legal case on August 1st, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that a suspension in 2022 seems “unlikely” to come for the star running back of the New Orleans Saints.

Alvin Kamara was arrested in Las Vegas, after playing in the Pro Bowl. He was arrested for alleged battery resulting in substantial bodily harm, a felony. The incident, which locals say happened at Drai’s nightclub at The Cromwell on the Las Vegas Strip, occurred on Saturday at 5:50pm. However, police did not arrest Kamara until Sunday, after he played in the Pro Bowl, for reasons unknown.

Police have claimed that the altercation between Kamara and the alleged victim was reportedly caught on surveillance video. The video allegedly shows Kamara putting his hands on the victim’s chest to prevent him from entering the elevator, and the victim pushing Kamara’s hands away before Chiefs cornerback Chris Lammons allegedly punched the victim in the face knocking him unconscious. Police also say that Kamara allegedly punched the victim up to eight times.

All of their attorneys, including Kamara’s, were present and all had reportedly requested a 60-day status. This marked the third time this year that Kamara’s case has been postponed.

Second round Seahawks RB from what is being described does not sound like a simple groin hernia. I would think that it is most likely a "sports hernia." If they are trying to get him back with nonsurgical treatment, it would mean 2-3 months of rehab. Certainlly not anything that would be expected to get him back for week 1. This could result in ~70% return to play. But as a RB, I would expect a lower return rate as well as a significantly higher recurrence rate. I would more expect that we hear that he makes a trip to Pennsylvania for a surgical repair. Even with such a repair, recent studies demonstrate that despite a return to preinjury performance level in most cases, career years and games are significantly cut. Furthermore, there is a significannt risk of a contralateral "sports hernia" developing and also hip pathology being present.

This is just another example of why the NFL Personal Conduct Policy is a joke.

NFL on Alvin Kamara: “No change to his status”
Posted by Mike Florio on August 17, 2022, 1:52 PM EDT

Saints running back Alvin Kamara continues to face felony battery charges, arising from a Pro Bowl-weekend incident in Las Vegas. Kamara continues to be eligible to practice and play.

“There’s no change to his status,” an NFL spokesman told PFT via email on Wednesday. “We continue to monitor all legal developments in the matter which remains under review of the Personal Conduct Policy.”

An August 1 hearing in the matter resulted in a 60-day delay. The chances of the case being resolved by the end of the 2022 season currently are slim, barring a plea deal. Even then, the league would need to have time to investigate the case, to conduct a hearing before Judge Sue L. Robinson, and to process any appeal.

PFT previously has reported that Kamara is bracing for a suspension of six weeks, eventually. That’s the baseline punishment for cases of felony battery.

The fact that Kamara faces a felony also allows the league to put him on paid leave. The policy, however, says that the league “may” do it, not “shall.” That gives the league leeway to not place Kamara on paid leave.

While the league can change its position at any time, there’s currently no indication that, once Week One rolls around, Kamara will be placed on the Commissioner Exempt list. And unless he takes a plea fairly soon, the more likely outcome would be a suspension in 2023, at the earliest.

What is anyone doing with a gun at a youth football game? Wonder if the gun was legal.

It's the last place a weapon should be at.

I've been a youth football coach and I've seen the tempers of some of the dads out there. It's sad and pathetic to see a grown-ass man meltdown because their kid's team is not playing up to his standards. Let the kids play. It should be fun, not some avenue for loser dads to live vicariously through their kids.

It should be interesting how long James can stay on the field after Mulagheta negotiated a sweetheart deal.

Chargers, Derwin James Agree To Safety-Record Contract
August 17th, 2022 at 8:58am CST by Sam Robinson

From 2019-20, James played in just five games. An August 2019 stress fracture in James’ right foot shelved him for much of that season, and a meniscus injury during training camp in 2020 ended up sidelining the former first-round pick for all of that season. During his two healthy years, however, the Florida State product has been one of the NFL’s best defensive backs. The Chargers rewarded him as such and will count on the 26-year-old talent for the next several seasons.

******************************************************************************************************

What the article didn't mention [besides the 2019 Jones fracture and a meniscus surgery in 2020]:

James suffered a left lateral meniscus tear in a game on September 10, 2016. He underwent a repair surgery and missed the final 11 games of the season. James missed two games in 2021, both because of a hamstring injury, but he was also apparently suffering from a shoulder issue and had a left labrum surgery once the season ended.

It should be mentioned that his 2020 meniscus surgery was on his right knee. So now he has suffered damage to both his right and left knee menisci. A medial meniscus injury has greater long term implications. A re-tear rate is relatively high at ~25%.
