NFL Random Thought of the Day

There has evidently been a leak from the NFL league office with possible "destruction of evidence" involved.

League office apparently leaks details of looming Ezekiel Elliott suspension
August 7, 2017, 11:57 AM EDT

Two years ago, someone at 345 Park Avenue leaked to Stephen A. Smith of ESPN the notion that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady had destroyed his cell phone in connection with the #Deflategate investigation. Within a day of the leak, Brady was suspended four games due in part to the allegation that he’d destroyed his cell phone.

Now, it seems like someone at 345 Park Avenue has leaked to Cris Carter of FS1 the notion that Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott is about to be suspended, with some eye-opening details.

Via Ryan Glasspiegel of TheBigLead.com, Carter said on FS1’s Undisputed that “in the next 48 hours I would be shocked if Zeke was not suspended.” Carter added that, “based on the information that’s going to come out, it’s going to be fairly easy to determine that something happened to this woman in her four days of being with Zeke.” (The specific allegation is that Elliott committed five acts of domestic violence in a six-day window.)

Carter described the situation as a case of “assault or domestic violence,” and Carter hinted that “when the information comes out there’s going to be some similarities” to Tom Brady’s suspension, including “information that he had been advised possibly to give up, that was destroyed.”

Carter ultimately suggested that Elliott’s banishment will be in the range of Brady’s four-game suspension. If this happens, it will contradict multiple proclamations from Cowboys owner Jerry Jones regarding the absence of any evidence of domestic violence.

That said, there’s no guarantee that Carter’s comments will be borne out by the eventual facts. He was careful to couch his terms in a way that would protect him from @OldTakesExposed, stopping short of reporting anything but merely sharing what he’s hearing. (Then again, Smith used similar tiptoe terms with Brady, prompting a negative reaction from him to our posts on the issue and generating some of our all-time favorite drops from his daily radio show, including “Mike Florio needs to grow the hell up” and “Would you please break a damn story?”)

If what Carter is hearing is accurate, it’s likely not a coincidence that someone from the league office saw fit to prime the pump by leaking startling information about Brady’s case in 2015 and now Elliott’s case to one of the weekday morning #EmbraceDebate shows. Getting inflammatory information into the public domain now makes it less stunning when the league issues its press release.

Jay Cutler: I’m a quarterback, I don’t have to be in great shape
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 7, 2017, 2:14 PM EDT

Is new Dolphins quarterback Jay Cutler in good enough shape to play after spending the last few months in retirement?

“The good thing is I play quarterback so I don’t have to be in that great cardiovascular shape,” Cutler said with a smile today.

Cutler said Dolphins coach Adam Gase called him last week, asked him if he was in good enough shape to play this season, and when Cutler said he was, they quickly agreed that they could make it work.

“I told him I was good to go. It was very short, very brief,” Cutler said.

Cutler said he’s just getting a feel for the Dolphins’ facility and wants to “figure out where the dinner room is.” He’s confident that within a month, he’ll have figured out enough to lead the Dolphins on the field at the start of the regular season.

The #Dolphins have passed QB Jay Cutler on his physical and he's officially signed his deal. Means his shoulder cleared, too.

That means he came into camp breathing and with a heart beat. And his shoulder being cleared to practice does not say anything about how his shoulder will respond to repeated practices or in game situations. I would doubt seriously that his shoulder rehab was geared to the same type and intensity as if he had known he would return to playing. His return may be much more difficult than what he and the team believe.

Raven reported that TE Crockett Gillmore was placed on IR after having surgery for an MCL tear. This reporting is questionable. Isolated Grade I and II are always treated conservatively. Now studies have revealed that nonoperative vs operative approach to Grade III result in similar outcomes and are now uncommonly repaired. If the injury is a Grade III MCL, this injury is associated with a high incidence of associated ACL tears, and a lower incidence of mensicus tears. It is likely that the additional injury is responsible for the surgery and the IR necessary for rehab for the whole season.

Sounds just like Cutler.

A rally in support for free agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick will be held later this month, according to a social media post by movie directory Spike Lee.

The "United We Stand" rally for Kaepernick will start at 5 p.m. ET on Aug. 23 and will take place at 345 Park Avenue in New York City.

345 Park Avenue is the address for NFL headquarters.

It is not immediately clear if Lee is the sole organizer of the rally or if there are others involved.

Kaepernick, 29, last played for the San Francisco 49ers, throwing 16 touchdowns and four interceptions in 12 games during the 2016 season.

Kaepernick has not been on a roster since, causing speculating from around the league that his free agency status might have something to do with his political views and that he is being blackballed by some NFL teams.

Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem before games last season, and said he won't do so until there is significant change in the United States. He said earlier this year that he will now stand for the anthem.

Really bad idea. This is exactly why the final decision makers won't sign Kaepernick - this kind of f**kin' circus.

Exactly. Kaepernick needs to come out telling his "fans" this kinda stuff hurts more than helps. & while I didn't have a problem with his protest, it would be a good idea to state he was wrong for inviting that kind of distraction.

The Titans sale was conjured up to avoid anti-trust and anti NFL League ownership rules.............evidently, it won't.

***************************************************************************************************************************
Sale of 1/3 of Titans doesn’t solve lingering control issues
August 8, 2017, 5:59 PM EDT

With one of the three branches of the Bud Adams family tree selling its interest in the Tennessee Titans, some will assume that the move will solve the league’s lingering concerns regarding the ownership of the team.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, it won’t. As the source said, a sale could actually make things worse.

The problem continues to be the decision of the team’s founder to bequeath the franchise in three equal shares, one going to each of his children’s families, but the failure of the late Bud Adams to give control of the team to any one slice of the three-piece pie. That has resulted in a lingering impasse among the three Adams families, with no two branches willing to sacrifice control of the team to the other.

The decision to sell by Susie Adams Smith (and her husband, Tommy, who at one point after the death of Bud Adams was running the team) is being interpreted as a move of exasperation with the inability of the three branches to determine which branch will have clear control. So now the other two branches, with Amy Adams Strunk controlling one and Susan Lewis and her two sons, Kenneth Adams IV and Barclay Adams, controlling the other, may end up in the exact same posture with a stranger to the family ultimately joining the organization and arguing that he/she should run the show.

Although the Titans consistently have downplayed the situation, that’s the lingering problem. The team has been divided into three chunks that are held separately and equally, with no one chunk having more or less authority than the other.

The league wants one of those chunks to have clear, irreversible control. It’s believed the Titans would like Amy Adam Strunk to control the team until such time as control would pass to Kenneth Adams IV. But league rules don’t allow control to slide from chunk to chunk of franchise ownership.

To solve the problem, Amy Adams Strunk (pictured) could sell all or part of her slice to the other branch of the family, or that branch could sell to her. Or either of them could buy out Susie Adams Smith. Possibly, no one branch of the family tree has the capital to pull that off.

So with no owner of 1/3 of the team buying out any other of 1/3 of the team, and with Susie Adams Strunk now willing to introduce into the mix someone who may not display the same patience and cooperation that the family members have displayed among themselves over the past few years, the NFL may finally begin to push the Titans aggressively to get this matter solved, once and for all.

Blake Bortles “definitely” sees improvement in Jaguars offense
Posted by Darin Gantt on August 9, 2017, 6:00 AM EDT

The Patriots have the kind of defense that can make people look bad.

But after Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles went 5-for-17 passing against them in a joint workout yesterday, perhaps it isn’t all about the Patriots.

Bortles told Ryan O’Halloran of the Florida Times-Union that he could “definitely” see progress from their offense during training camp, though it might be hard for others to see it.

“It was about what we can do, how we react in the situation and how can we continue to get better,” Bortles said. “Up front, [the Patriots] single everybody up and that made everything one-on-one as far as the blocking schemes and then they do a lot of different things in coverage with their safeties, whether they’re sprinting their guys down or staying high and doing different stuff. . . .

“There is no doubt there has been some bad stuff that’s happened that we have to fix and continue to work on, but I think if you watched 7-on-7s [Tuesday] or 1-on-1s, there weren’t a whole lot of times we got stopped. We just have to find a way to carry that over into the 11-on-11.”

Bortles has had an up-and-down camp, highlighted (on the negative side) by a five-interception day. And since he hadn’t talked to reporters since then, he had to explain that one as well.

“I think anytime you throw an interception, you learn from it,” he said. “It’s practice – not downplaying practice or justifying that it’s OK to throw five interceptions, but if there’s a time to do it, it’s then. You learn from it and then hopefully move on and grow from it and don’t do it again.”

If Bortles has learned from his turnovers, the season to show it is this one. The Jags gave him chances to succeed this year, by drafting a workhourse running back in Leonard Fournette instead of investing in a quarterback of the future with the fourth pick, when they could have had any one of this year’s class they wanted.

That gives Bortles some degree of leeway, but the time for excuses and explanations is nearing an end, and he’s going to have to show the improvement rather than talking about it.

Report: NFLRA approves plan for 21-24 full-time officials
Posted by Josh Alper on August 9, 2017, 2:58 PM EDT

The topic of full-time officials in the NFL has been bandied about for some time and it looks like there is some movement toward putting some in place.

Albert Breer of TheMMQB.com reports that the NFL Referees Association has approved a plan to put 21-24 full-time officials in place. Those officials will come from the current roster and encompass all seven positions on the field with no more than five selected from any individual position.

There has been an option to put full-time officials in place since 2012, but NFLRA executive director Scott Green said earlier this year that the union was still looking for clarity on several questions before moving forward with a plan. Among them was how you move seasonal employees to a full-time position in a way that makes sense financially for all involved.

Breer reports that the full-time officials “will be able to have outside employment,” although it’s not clear how that would work or what responsibilities full-time officials would have that their part-time colleagues will not.

Looming legalization of gambling nudges NFL toward full-time officials

August 9, 2017, 4:27 PM EDT

The NFL has resisted legalized gambling over the years for a variety of reasons. Here’s one of them: Once fans can place bets on point spreads, over-unders, and various other in-game props, it will be important for the league to create the impression that it’s doing everything it can to ensure that the officials aren’t making mistakes.

Indeed, when part-time officials currently make mistakes, the knee-jerk reaction by many is to say, “Full-time officials wouldn’t make those mistakes.”

It’s more perception than reality, but the perception will continue to be the reality until all officials are full-time employees. So with legalized gambling coming (courtesy of either the Supreme Court or Congress), it’s no surprise that the NFL, nearly five years after securing the ability to hire full-time officials, is doing it.

Whether it actually reduces errors doesn’t matter. The league will need to do everything it can to create the impression that it’s trying to minimize errors, and full-time officials will assist in that regard.

Other eventual enhancements will include expanded replay review. The league likewise should consider assigning a member of each officiating crew to monitor multiple camera angles in order to enhance the initial ruling on the field, with the replay system as a fallback.

At some point, the NFL should tear down the current officiating function and rebuild it from scratch, in light of all available technological advances and devices. There’s nothing like the scrutiny that will come from bad calls causing millions of dollars to change hands to create the incentive for such an effort — and there’s nothing like the billions the NFL will make from legalized gambling to pay for it.

The Dolphins may have company for Tannehill on the ACL rupture list............2nd round rookie LB Raekwon McMillan. Gase is denying that the injury has been identified. The way it happened and the fact that he was seen leaving the locker room on crutches and with a big knee brace, makes me believe the is a significant chance that he has indeed suffered an ACL. If this is confirmed as I suspect, it will be "lucky" #13.

Big words from a guy averaging 3.44 yards against scrubs. Pats didn't really play anyone, as the usually do in preseason. Reality will catch up to Fournette sooner rather than later.

Leonard Fournette: NFL game 'a lot slower than I really thought'
http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/...-leonard-fournette-says-debut-was-really-easy

"It's a lot slower than I really thought," Fournette told NFL.com after the Jaguars' 31-24 victory over the New England Patriots on Thursday night. "That's how I've been since I first got into the NFL. A lot of people were like, 'It's going to be fast.' But by me playing in the SEC, that kind of helped me a lot.

"I think, to me, it was really easy."

Fournette, the No. 4 overall pick in the draft out of LSU, rushed for 31 yards on nine carries and scored on a 1-yard touchdown run.

Trubisky looked like the best young QB. Only watched pieces of the game but I was left impressed.

Garropolo also looked pretty damn good.

Curious to see Mahomes play.

Edit: Peterman looked strong in the highlights I saw as well have to tell it like it is.

I don't know that Fournette will bust but I don't get the once in a generation hype either. I think Mixon will be much better than him.

Two late round guys I liked for us that both got snatched up by the Patriots (because of course) looked very good. Jacob Hollister and Austin Carr.

Cowboys' Ezekiel Elliott suspended six games for conduct
Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott has been suspended six games by the NFL for violating the personal conduct policy, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The suspension comes as a result of an investigation that started more than a year ago after an ex-girlfriend accused Elliott of domestic violence in Columbus, Ohio. The Columbus City Attorney's office announced in September that it would not pursue charges against Elliott because of "conflicting and inconsistent information," but the NFL can penalize a player even without legal charges.

Elliott is expected to appeal the suspension, league sources told Schefter.

Elliott has three business days to file notice of appeal, and a hearing must be scheduled within 10 days of receipt of the notice, according to Article 46 of the collective bargaining agreement, which governs appeal of commissioner discipline.

Ouch.

Sammy Watkins traded to Rams

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap30...-trade-sammy-watkins-to-rams-acquire-matthews

Sammy Watkins is headed to Los Angeles.

The Buffalo Bills traded their star wide receiver and a 2018 sixth-round pick to the Rams in exchange for E.J. Gaines and the Rams' 2018 second-round pick, the teams announced.

In a separate trade, Buffalo acquired wide receiver Jordan Matthews from the Eagles in exchange for Ronald Darby and a 2018 third-round pick, the teams announced.

Around the NFL will have more on this story shortly.

Titans Corey Davis (1st round, 5th pick) went down with a Hamstring tear which I believe closes the door for him participating in the rest of the preseason.

Ezekiel Elliot is expected to appeal and have his suspension reduced to four games rather than six. My question is why? If he really is guilty for something as serious as domestic violence - something that took a year-long investigation and millions of dollars by the NFL - shouldn't he just man up and admit his mistakes? Accept the six-game suspension.

He's lucky a video hasn't surfaced of him hitting that woman. A video is a hundred times worse than just allegations. There was a separate video, totally unrelated, of him exposing a woman's breast on a St. Patrick's day parade in Dallas.

If only the Texans had some high-round draft picks to play with when the trade market is so friendly like that. E.J. Gaines and a second-round pick is not much for a potential stud and All-Pro at wide receiver. Granted, Sammy Watkins hasn't lived up to his expectations and injuries have slowed him down. He still put up a 1,047-yard, 9 TD season in 2015. Big play Sammy is only 24 years old as well.

Man oh man, imagine having a Sammy Watkins on the opposite side of DeAndre Hopkins with Deshaun Watson throwing them to ball. That's some #ClemsonToClemson fireworks right there.

Then again having a great #2 wide receiver is a luxury need at best. But now that Will "butterfingers" Fuller is injured. Not that he could consistently catch the ball anyways, a guy we invested a first-round pick on, it just makes me wish we hadn't dropped the ball so much on a #2 wideout. No pun intended!!!!

The sad thing is Jerry Jones is furious and appalled by the six-game suspension and he criticized the NFL for taking over a year to investigate and hand down this, as he words it, "unfair and harsh punishment." He feels after that long there shouldn't be any suspension. Really Jerry? I guess some NFL owners still don't think domestic violence is a big deal. Do we really need a video to surface before we start to take these things more seriously?

The problem is that the woman has zero credibility, and was caught telling friends to lie for her. The only proof she had was bruises that she apparently got in an unrelated bar fight.

Honestly, I think the Ginger Hammer is trying to make examples out of players from the most popular teams, so he can build a tough guy image. Same with the Pats and Deflate Gate.

If Zeke did it, he should confess and do his suspension. If he didn't, that is a different story.

See what happens when you put yourself in questionable situations with questionable people? He should know better. He could very well be 100% innocent but even the slightest doubt is going to look bad on him. I hope he learns something from this and moves on. Dude has talent but that so does everyone else.

Dolphins' QB Ryan Tannehill will undergo reconstructive surgery and be placed on season-ending IR, as @ArmandoSalguero reported.

As I posted before...........Tannehill should have undergone ACL reconstruction last year after the original injury occurred. Partial ACL tears in an elite athlete should not be treated conservatively, even with the new modalities such as stem cell therapy available today.

I don't know. The Cowboys supposedly did their own investigation & found the claim baseless. From Jerry's pov, they're suspending him 6 games because some woman made a money grab, frivolous lawsuit.

Basically Zeek is being suspended because his girlfriend got mad at him. What kind of precedence does that set?

NFLN released the letter yesterday. There were multiple incidents concerning abuse and his behavior. Seems to me that Elliot wasn’t so forthcoming about all the facts.

Despite the title of this lengthy Washington Post article, it actually takes you through the NFL investigation, its findings and its process in reaching the conclusions.

Here's how Ezekiel Elliott could get completely banished from the NFL
The NFL is going to be watching the Cowboys star closely

If Ezekiel Elliot doesn't stay out of trouble, there's a chance he could be banished for life from the NFL. That stern warning came from the league Friday after it announced Elliott's six-game suspension. In a six-page letter to Elliott, the NFL made it very clear that the league has the right to banish him forever if he were to get in trouble again.

From the letter:

"You must have no further adverse involvement with law enforcement, and must not commit any additional violations of league policies. In that respect, you should understand that another violation of this nature may result in your suspension or potential banishment from the NFL."

Now, that doesn't mean Elliott would be banished if he gets in trouble again, but it means the punishment would be on the table if he were involved in another domestic violence incident. The NFL's domestic violence policy even notes that a second domestic violence incident will result in "banishment" from the league, with the possibility of applying for reinstatement after one year. The threat from the league means that Elliott needs to stay out of trouble.

As things stand, Elliott will be sitting out the first six games of the 2017 season unless his appeal is successful. CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora doesn't see a good chance of that happening.

Elliott would have to produce new evidence in the case. Elliott's lawyer said Friday that the NFL "cherry-picked" evidence to support its case, and that Elliott didn't do anything wrong. The Cowboys running back also made it clear that he "strongly disagrees" with the suspension and the NFL's findings.

So what happens next?

As CBSSports.com's Jared Dubin noted Friday, Elliott's appeal will be heard by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell or a designated arbitrator. If the suspension is upheld on appeal, Elliott could choose to take his case to federal court, as Tom Brady did after he was suspended for his alleged role in Deflategate. Brady appealed the suspension, only to see it upheld by Goodell, which led to the federal court case.

If Elliott doesn't accept his suspension -- or the commissioner's decision in a potential appeal -- the case could potentially drag out as long as Brady's.

*****************************************************************************************************************************

I doubt that Elliot could even have it heard in federal court let alone be successful in that, unlike with Brady's strange type of infraction with no real process even drawn out for the infraction questioned, the Domestic Abuse Policy is solid.

Marshawn Lynch stood for the anthem in Seattle, contrary to Jack Del Rio’s claim
August 13, 2017, 8:21 AM EDT

Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch has not explained publicly why he sat out the national anthem before Saturday night’s game. But he did explain himself privately to Raiders coach Jack Del Rio — who then gave a misleading account of Lynch’s past actions to reporters.

“He said, ‘This is something I have done for 11 years. It’s not a form of anything other than me being myself,’” Del Rio said Lynch told him.

PFT tracked down a video of the national anthem before the November 13, 2011 Ravens-Seahawks game in Seattle, and that video clearly shows Lynch standing for the anthem. We have not been able to find any photos or videos showing Lynch sitting out the anthem at any time in the 11 years since he entered the NFL, until Saturday night.

It’s possible that Lynch has skipped the anthem in some settings, but Del Rio’s statement made it sound like Lynch has consistently sat out the anthem throughout his career. He hasn’t..............................REST OF STORY

The question is since the OLine has "changed" and with Elliot not there to deflect attention to him, will Prescott maintain or regress if he doesn't step up from his game manager approach.

Where does Dak Prescott rank among NFL QBs?
Andrew Tobolowsky, WFAA Published 10:56 a.m. CT Aug. 7, 2017 | Updated 10:56 a.m. CT Aug.

DALLAS - Since there’s not too much else to talk about during the NFL offseason, many NFL writers have turned to the treasured past-time of making lists. Where the Dallas Cowboys are concerned, one thing about these lists has stood out pretty consistently. That thing is, Dak Prescott is almost always ranked somewhat low.

Not super low mind you, and not always – here’s Fox Sports ranking him seventh. – but usually he’s not in the top ten. Sporting News has him at 12, so does Pro Football Focus, MSN has him at 14 behind both Eli Manning and Kirk Cousins.

I don’t honestly know where to rank Prescott, and I suppose most people don’t either. QBs get a lot of credit when the team wins, which the Cowboys did, but also are expected to throw lots of TD passes. Prescott's 23 TDs ranked him 16th in the league, tied with Blake Bortles and behind Cousins and Marcus Mariota. Prescott was phenomenally careful with throwing fewer INTs than anybody but Tom Brady, and in four more games, but that too has a stigma. Low TDs and low INTs makes you look like a game-manager, and little more...........REST OF THE STORY

I can't find it, but Cynthia Frelund from NFLN did a thing the other day where she amended her Cowboys' W/L prediction from 10.5 games to 7.5 games without Zeke Elliot. Dak is good, but Zeke allowed him to not have to take chances.

I believe that the new composition of the OL and the loss of Elliot will expose Prescott's formerly masked warts and reclassify him from "top tier."
