NFL Random Thought of the Day

Seattle Seahawks left tackle George Fant tore the ACL in his right knee during last night's preseason game against the Vikings....................#21

Dr J. I think you're morphing into this guy....

:D

The more we see of this stuff the more difficult it is to blame folks like Duane Brown with unguaranteed contracts re injuries for sitting out the preseason.
That's what a personal protection insurance policy is for a "smart" and "savvy" forward-thinking NFL vet.

The Ravens' 304# DE is being given time at FB...........looking good at that position so far........this may allow him onto the final roster.

Unless the premiums on those sorts of policies are prohibitive I don't understand why they aren't routinely used ?
I know for a fact that they aren't. I've addressed this in a previous post. These policies are relatively affordable (especially for a player like Brown), but must usually be attained in advance to the beginning of the non-guaranteed year. I'm sure that he could attain a late limited policy, but the premium for such a policy would probably be sky high with questionable ultimate financial protection. Brown never expected that the Texans wouldn't renegotiate his contract by TC (stupid in itself). He can readily attain a policy for next year if it remains non guaranteed............too late for this year.

Smart players and their smart agents would anticipate the need for these type of policies.

Now Seattle's LT Fant is reported to have a complete tear of his ACL and a complete tear (not a minor sprain) of his MCL............an unusual combination that is most commonly associated with a knee dislocation. If this is the case, it could very well involve another ligament or ligaments. If it is only the complete tears reported at this time, it will still be a more difficult recovery in that it is likely to have also involved cartilage/meniscus damage. And if it involves additional ligament(s), like Bridgewater, this could be more than just a 1 year recovery........hopefully not a career ender.

Ouch!! Saw that happen; Fant got rolled up on by one of his teammates. He had played a solid LT up until that point.

#37 of the Panthers was forced backwards on the ground.........hyperflexing both of his knees.......that's the same mechanism that got Derek Newtons patellar tendons ruptured...........also a mechanism by which quads and PCLs are torn.

Titans Fowler looks like he was being checked for "drawer sign"............ACL.

[Later edit: Unlike what the broacasters have been saying, they did not knock knees. Fowler was hit in the lateral quad.]

Well, the Eagles have gotten creative in describing first-round DE Derek Barnett's injury which has precluded him from practicing or playing..........."specifically," it is a "lower body injury." :spit:

Watching Odell Beckham Jr. they have announced that he has suffered an ankle sprain. The way he was hit from the side of his knee with his foot partially planted. it sure looks more like it could be a knee injury........at least an MCL.

I see Seattle's starting LT is out with a leg injury too.

Watched a little bit of Browns/Giants last night and news flash.....Osweiller started and is still horrible. A repeat of what he did here. Just bad.

As already mentioned, reports are Beckham sustained an ankle sprain..............the mechanism of hit still makes me concerned that he may have also suffered an MCL sprain. We'll need to wait for the final word (taking that they will honestly reveal the MRI findings)

This morning from the New york Daily News:
The Giants did say Beckham “will undergo further examination,” presumably an MRI to also check his knee, which bent awkwardly on the low-but-legal hit by Browns defensive back Briean Boddy-Calhoun.

Still no word on Beckham's MRI. Should have been performed early this morning with the result certainly by noon. With no definitive word , I'm now suspicious that the simple ankle sprain may turn out to be a high ankle sprain, and/or that an MCL injury is present.

On a conference call, McAdoo refused to say whether Beckham had a high ankle sprain........................translation: "It's a high ankle sprain."

Can we not leave politics out of sports? This is beyond asinine.:toropalm:

Robert Lee: ESPN under fire for taking announcer off UVA game
by Brian Stelter @brianstelter August 23, 2017: 7:46 AM ET
By trying to avoid an embarrassing ordeal, ESPN has embarrassed itself.
On Tuesday night, the network confirmed that its management moved an Asian-American announcer, Robert Lee, off the University of Virginia's home opener football game "simply because of the coincidence of his name."

Earlier Tuesday, a source had told CNN that Lee was abruptly switched to the Youngstown versus Pitt game. He had recently been promoted by ESPN, so the switch was a sensitive matter.

Osweiler being held out of game 3. Kizer named starter.

Could Osweiler be on the trading block? Maybe going to Jags or Colts?

Ravens OC unconcerned with Joe Flacco return timeline

Tired of asking Ravens head coach John Harbaugh when Joe Flacco will return, Baltimore area reporters tried offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg on Wednesday.

His answer doesn't exactly cut through the haze surrounding the quarterback's back issue, though it didn't sound any alarm bells either.

Q: Is there a time you'd like to see Joe back practicing for you to have a comfort level?

A: "Yeah, well, I think I know. And at least Joe thinks he knows when this will happen, so that way I think I know and so we think we know," Mornhinweg said, via the team's official site. "And then so, lookit, if it's before that or a little bit before -- probably not going to be much before -- maybe a little bit before or a little bit after, we'll adjust the plan. As long as he's back within a reasonable amount of time to prepare I think we're going to be just fine there, yeah."

What a direct answer! Bottom line translation...............I haven't and still don't believe he has a muscle strain..................he has a disc problem.

Just saw on the NFL Network crawl that Oilers' LB Robert Brazile

was named a senior finalist for the 2018 Pro Football HoF.

...oh and GB OG Jerry Kramer was also named a finalist too.

Report: Josh Gordon in rehab, seeks NFL reinstatement in September
Posted by Charean Williams on August 25, 2017, 6:32 PM EDT

Browns receiver Josh Gordon has returned to rehab in hopes of being reinstated to the NFL, according to Jason Cole. Cole, citing sources, tweeted that Gordon entered rehab two months ago in cooperation with the NFL in hopes of returning to the field in late September.

Gordon has entered rehab at least three other times, according to Nate Ulrich of the Akron Beacon Journal.

Gordon, who hasn’t played since December of 2014, had his petition for reinstatement from his drug ban denied three months ago. He can re-apply next month.

The Browns retain Gordon’s rights.

Browns head of football operations Sashi Brown told some of the team’s season ticket holders last week that “we want to better Josh the person first.”

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell reinstated Gordon on a conditional basis last summer, but Gordon didn’t adhere to the program and checked himself into inpatient rehab in September. Goodell said last week that Gordon has entered the NFL’s program, a step toward the receiver working his way back onto the field.

Because of his omission, and Guy Lewis' for so long, I just have zero respect for these entities any more.

That said, they could gain a little of that back by righting a terrible wrong and getting Dr. Doom his rightful recognition.

Edelman is suspected to have ACL tear. As I've been saying in other Texans discussions, anything can happen and no season will be like the previous.

http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/...-julian-edelman-carted-field-right-leg-injury
Having watched the game, it would almost shock me if an MRI does not demonstrate at least an ACL..............classic mechanism......foot plants..........knee goes forward..............lower leg forgets to go with it.

Believe it or not, with his history of myriads of injuries, he has never suffered an ACL rupture.

Edelman is lucky in one respect. He signed a 2-year, $11M contract with $7M guaranteed in June.
