I want more play off games. I want an 18 game schedule (since I'm paying full price for four preseason games).

not what I want, what you want.

The 16 game schedule is just fine, thankyouverymuch.
Now I do not think preseason games should cost as much as regular season games... no way. Not even close to the same quality of play.

And the current playoff set up is just fine too. The more teams that are allowed into the tourney the more it starts to feel like "everybody gets a trophy". But that's probably just me.

I don't see where either change will make the quality of play any better.

And by the end of the season and into the playoffs, the more star players will be on the sidelines on crutches, while you look at the game card line ups wondering "Who Dat?"

I don't agree with either.

The problem I have with both QBs is that they haven't played a lot. If they can handle the mental aspects of the game, & they both appear to have it upstairs, then the only real learning they can do is on the field.

I don't mean to start them right away, or even at all in 2014. But if they're in a blow out, throw them out there for a series, working your way up to a qtr, or even a half after you're out of play off contention.

I don't see how anyone can say, "1 year minimum" for any QB, any player. There has to be tangible milestones. I want to see how he makes this decision, that decision... how he handles this situation, that situation. I want to see him improve in how he does this, how he does that.

A lot of this, the coaches can see in practice. But when he's ready, he's ready. There's only so much learning you can do on the sideline. He can come up with all the right answers, but sooner or later, you have to put him in real situations to get real progress.

The bolded is the key.

There needs to be a schedule with milestones and metrics. Some guys might be ready in half a season, some guys might not be ready in two seasons.

But the only significant testing ground is in game. I've heard vet after vet say again and again, "there ain't nothing like game speed".

The true pass/fail tests have to be in real, meaningful games. And the kid has to earn the right to get into meaningful games by shining in practice.

Dareus arrested again
For the second time in less than a month, Bills defensive tackle Marcell Dareus is facing charges after an arrest. According to the Buffalo News, Dareus was arrested on May 30 in Hamburg, N.Y., after reports of car racing.

Dareus is facing three misdemeanor charges and four traffic charges stemming from the incident. The misdemeanor charges include: reckless endangerment, reckless driving and participating in an illegal speed contest.

The Pro Bowl defensive lineman is also facing traffic charges of speeding, failure to keep right, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and moving from a lane unsafely.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that Kaepernick and the San Francisco 49ers have signed a six-year extension through 2020, according to a source close to the situation. Kaepernick will earn up to $126 million, with $61 million guaranteed, per Rapoport. Kaepernick was entering the final year of his rookie contract, which was set to pay him under $1 million. The deal was completed in only one day of negotiations, and the team later announced the deal.

Kaepernick has been to two NFC Championship games & a Super Bowl. He just got paid.

Flacco got paid, turned in a crappy season. Ryan got paid, turned in a crappy season. To a lesser extent, Schaub got paid, turned in a crappy season.

If Kaepernick turns in a crappy season, Things aren't looking so good for Mr. Luck.

I betcha if you got a huge raise one year, then put in a crappy year's performance, you wouldn't be jumping up and down for joy when you're called into the boss' office next year to discuss the little matter of a readjustment of the following year's salary.:roast:
 
i knew the 49'ers werent sustainable because all of those early draft picks were playing well and needing to be paid, but i didnt expect their doom to come so quickly because of crippling the cap with a limited one-and-run quarterback.

alex smith was 19-5-1 with harbaugh, kap is 17-6. quarterback play is very much NOT what's fueling that engine.

Exactly. That is an insane contract for a QB like Kaepernick.

Kaepernick

After signing, with an old-old-school quill pen, his new contract, 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick explained to the media that he agreed to the deal as designed in order to help the team sign and keep other players.

“Part of the way the contract is written and the way it was negotiated was so they would be able to sign other players,” Kaepernick said. “That was something that my agents and the organization worked out and they felt like this was something they would be able to get other players with.”

So how does the deal accomplish that objective? Based on the full numbers we obtained late Wednesday night, Kaepernick’s paltry (relative to other franchise quarterbacks) signing bonus of $12.328 million results in only $2.05 million per year in cap space through 2019 being devoted to the up front payment. Coupled with his base salary of $645,000 and workout bonus of $100,000, Kaepernick’s cap number for 2014 stands at a very manageable $2.795 million.

Next year, when his salary moves to $12.4 million with a $2 million per-game roster bonus and a $400,000 workout bonus, the cap number spikes to $16.85 million. Which is roughly what his cap number would have been if the team had used the franchise tag on Kaepernick next year. Of that amount, $2 million goes away if Kaepernick doesn’t take at least 80 percent of the snaps or if he fails to lead the team to the Super Bowl or to be named first-team or second-team AP All-Pro. So the cap number could be as low as $14.85 million.

For 2016, the salary moves to $13.9 million with another $2 million in per-game roster bonuses and $400,000 workout bonus. That’s a cap number of $18.35 million, which will drop to $16.35 million if he doesn’t take at least 80 percent of the snaps or if he fails to lead the team to the Super Bowl or to be named first-team or second-team AP All-Pro in 2014 and 2015.

The cap numbers, subject to the annual $2 million de-escalator, for the rest of the deal are $20.95 million in 2017, $21.45 million in 2018, $23.25 million in 2019, and $23.4 million in 2020.

The deal allows cap space to be created in any given year via a restructuring that converts base salary to bonus money. However, that reality applies in all long-term, big-money deals. There’s nothing unique to the structure of the Kaepernick deal that makes it any easier to sign other players — other than the fact that the contract represents less than the current market value for franchise quarterbacks.

Over time, Kaepernick’s contract will reflect less and less of the current market value for franchise quarterbacks. If the top of the market was a true $20 million per year when the cap was $123 million per team, what will the top of the market become when the cap spikes above $140 million in 2015? By 2016, it could surpass $160 million. If the top quarterbacks received 16.26 percent of the available cap when the per-team limit was $123 million, the top of the market will be $26 million by the time the cap moves to $160 million.

Kaepernick, with a deal that pays out $13 million in 2014, as much as $14.8 million but as little as $10.4 million in 2015, as much as $16.3 million but as little as $11.9 million in 2016, as much as $18.9 million but as little as $14.5 million in 2017, as much as $19.4 million but as little as $15 million in 2018, as much as $21.2 million but as little as $16.8 million in 2019, and as much as $23.4 million but as little as $19 million in 2020, quickly will find himself well below the going rate for true franchise quarterbacks — no matter how well he plays as he adds to a career that consists for now of only 23 regular-season starts but several memorable postseason performances.

The rivalry between the Seahawks and 49ers extends to their coaches. In fact, it begins with their coaches.

Although most football coaches are tight-lipped types who say nothing more about their rival coaches than that they share mutual respect, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh have always had a barely concealed contempt for each other. They didn’t like each other when Carroll coached USC and Harbaugh coached Stanford, and they don’t like each other now, either.

The latest salvo comes from Carroll, who, according to the Seattle Times, said at an event for Seahawks fans that Harbaugh is “a great coach and we love beating him.”

Kinda what I thought. Too many QBs gett'n paid recently & teams not getting what they want out of the deal. Falcons, Ravens, Cowboys, not one of them make the play-offs after paying their QB.

& Coach Swag here built his team the right way, no short-cuts. Still going to need special player at QB... Kaepernick's contract shows the 9ers understand this.

Chiefs release cornerback Brandon Flowers
Flowers, 28, made the Pro Bowl last season, when he had 68 tackles and an interception. But Dorsey prefers bigger corners, and prior to his release, Flowers, who is 5 feet 9, was one of only three of the 11 cornerbacks on the roster shorter than 6 feet.

He also wasn’t a great fit in new defensive coordinator Bob Sutton’s scheme, which relies a great deal on press-man coverage, and Flowers struggled both outside and inside. He had a Pro Football Focus grade of minus-5.9, which was his worst since 2008.

But even after a rough 2013 season, his coverage grade of 35.5 ranks the fifth-highest of any cornerback over the last five seasons.

He also played through a knee injury last year and showed improvement toward the end of the season, when he had an interception as a nickel corner in the Chiefs’ playoff loss to Indianapolis....
