NFL Random Thought of the Day

Slowik is not going to have the success in Carolina like he had here. Young is not Stroud, or even anywhere close. I hope Slowik stays for at least another year, but we all know he's a short timer here. Stroud made his career path a lot easier. LOL
If Carolina is Slowik's only option for a HC job then I think he passes. Unless Tepper pays through the nose for Slowik and that's unlikely to happen. Unfortunately I dont think the Panthers will be the only org that offers Slowik a HC job.

If she came skanking around Houston requesting permission to interview Slowick.....you know, time to put the shoe on the other foot. Ms Skank, it would only cost you the Oliers name and colors to go after Slowick, otherwise go duck yourself. Then I'd mothball everything associated with the name and colors until everything was figured out for a "Throwback Uniform" one game a season.
I still love the fact that she contributed a million dollars to the Harvey Fund when this city was really hurting. I'm also glad that she owns the Inbreds because they will never win anything as long as she owns the team. Truly Bud's kid.

I like him. His players like him. But I'm not sure that he's shown enough strong signs of HC effectiveness to initially bypass lesser positions......where he needs to prove himself for a rebound.
Before they started trading off guys like AJ Brown, Jonu Smith etc... they did make an AFCCG with Tannehill as their QB. BTW, I wouldn't be against bringing in Tannehill as a backup to Stroud next yr.

Head to head hit with Mahomes' helmet shattering.............and no concussion check! Good job NFL et al !

Irsay has been a long-time cigarette smoker from what I've heard and has recently been dealing with emphysema. His hospitalization could be due to acute aggravation of this condition or a severe upper respiratory infection acutely worsened by his condition.
Not too many people are aware of how driven he is to his habit.
*********
***********
In 2002, Irsay checked into a rehab center for narcotic abuse secondary to severe chronic hip and back pain. In 2014, Irsay was checked into a rehab center after an arrest on charges of driving under the influence and four felony counts of possession of a controlled substance. About 10 years ago, I had opportunity to speak to the head of world-famous drug and alcohol rehab center, THE MEADOWS. I noticed that many of the in-house patients were heavy coffee drinkers and cigarette smokers while there. I asked why these patients were not restricted from also these admittedly addictive substances. She honestly replied that if they were to do that, they would lose a fortune because no one would come.

I wish Irsay the best and hopefully a recovery............with a promise to himself to try to remove smoking from his repertoire.

The report stated an emergency call from someone in the home said Irsay was observed to have a "blue skin tone."
Irsay received a dose of Narcan, a medicine that quickly reverses an opioid overdose, from the first police officers on the scene, according to the report, and "responded slightly" before paramedics transported him to a hospital. The incident was classified as a suspected overdose in the documents, according to the report.
The Colts, who last week revealed Irsay was dealing with a "severe respiratory illness," declined to offer any specific response but issued a statement Wednesday saying, "Mr. Irsay continues to recover from his respiratory illness. We will have no further comment on his personal health, and we continue to ask that Jim and his family's privacy be respected."

Russell Wilson gets lifeline from NFL team as Denver Broncos future uncertain

ESPN reports the Vikings might want Wilson - if Kirk Cousins doesn't stay with them. Cousins, who had his season cut short because of an Achilles injury, is wanted back with the Vikings if the price is right. But he might decide to become a free agent, which could open the door for Wilson takes his place.

It is somewhat unusual that if there is a opioid overdose, even a severe one, that narcan (nalaxone) would only result in a slight response. His underlying lung disease from his cigarette addiction undoutedly would set him up for severe response to any opiod, since opiods cause respiratory depression to an already compromised system. Narcan works within 2-3 minutes and is repeated once if there is no response. If it doesn't work by then and the patient is truly blue, not or hardly breathing and virtually no pulse, death is not an unexpected result. The slight response to Narcan can put the source in question. To note, a heavy smoker can almost have a blueish grey tone to their skin. Any number of things can cause a heavy smoker with significant emphysema to go into respiratory arrest, most commonly viral and secondary bacterial infections [cigarette or other smoke in a room (and we know his chain smoking habit), air pollution, dust and fumes from chemicals, paint or cleaning products, as well as mold and mildew] .............something that is as likely if not more likely to have occurred rather than opiod overdose.

Wild-card weekend racks up big numbers, despite only one close game
By Mike Florio
Published January 17, 2024 07:41 PM

The ratings for super wild-card weekend were stellar, even if the games weren’t.

Browns-Texans on NBC, which resulted in a 45-14 Houston win, averaged 29 million viewers. Saturday night’s Dolphins-Chiefs game, a 26-7 margin, averaged 23 million viewers on Peacock.

On Sunday, the Packers-Cowboys game on Fox — which was over before halftime — averaged 40 million. Rams-Lions on NBC in the Sunday night window generated 35.8 million average viewers.

Monday’s unexpected doubleheader had 31 million watch Steelers-Bills on CBS (31-17), and 28.6 million tuned in to ABC, ESPN, and ESPN2 for Eagles-Buccaneers (32-9).

Last year, Giants-Vikings on Fox had the biggest audience, with 33.2 million viewers. That’s far less than the January 2024 wild-card high-water mark.
Other wild-card games in January 2023 generated 30.87 million (Dolphins-Bills), 27.46 million (Seahawks-49ers), 20.6 million (Chargers-Jaguars), 26.87 million (Ravens-Bengals), and 30.1 million (Cowboys-Buccaneers).

Somewhat surprisingly, the Saturday night Peacock game between Miami and Kansas City drew more viewers than last year’s Saturday night NBC game between L.A. and Jacksonville.

Bottom line? First, the Cowboys deliver. Second, the late Monday afternoon game between the Steelers and Bills drew more viewers than last year’s 1:00 p.m. ET Sunday game.

That could make the NFL shifting to two games on Saturday, two games on Sunday, and two games on Monday, especially if wild-card weekend lands on the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Many seem to prefer three days of doubleheaders as opposed to a 10-hour Sunday marathon with three games, back to back to back.

McCarthy has a 1-3 postseason record in Dallas, with home losses to the San Francisco 49ers and Packers in the wild-card round in two of the past three years. His lone playoff win came in the 2022 wild-card round at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in what turned out to be the final game of Tom Brady's career.

Funny how eerily similar Mike McCarthy and John Harbaugh's HC resumes are..

You know there's a reason Houstons NFL team is called the "Texans" - it is Texas's team with now 5 Play-Off wins during its existence in the current century vs. 4 wins for the states other NFL team.
Just a reminder my fellow Texans fans: no matter what happens this Saturday in Baltimore we can all go into the offseason this year looking @ the upside of what should be a very exciting and enjoyable ride.

Of course he's coming back. Jerry knows the value of a yes man who works for donuts.

Bieniemy has certainly not done anything to earn such a promotion to HC by his performance as OC. Have the Commanders just found an easy way to fulfill their Rooney Rule requirement?

Commanders interviewed Eric Bieniemy for head coaching vacancy
By Josh Alper
Published January 21, 2024 01:39 PM

Eric Bieniemy’s name came up a lot in head coaching searches over the last few years, but the Commanders offensive coordinator has not been making the rounds on the interview circuit this month.

Bieniemy has had one interview, however. PFT has learned, via a league source, that the Commanders have interviewed Bieniemy for the vacancy they created when they fired Ron Rivera a day after the end of the regular season.

Bieniemy is believed to be a viable candidate for the Commanders job and his interview was not simply a courtesy because he was a member of Rivera’s final staff. The Commanders began their head coaching interviews after hiring General Manager Adam Peters this week and Bieniemy’s interview does not have any bearing on compliance with the Rooney Rule because he is an internal candidate.

The 2023 season was Bieniemy’s first in Washington after five seasons as the Chiefs offensive coordinator. Bieniemy didn’t call the offensive plays while in Kansas City and it was thought that taking on that responsibility with the Commanders would boost his chances of landing a head coaching job. The Commanders season did not go well, however, and Bieniemy didn’t get the kind of bump that many expected him to get.
Bieniemy did land an interview with his current team, though, and we’ll see if that results in a move up the ladder in Washington.

Just as an FYI........somethin not often mentioned........In 2020 and 2021, the NFL expanded the Rooney Rule to supposedly raise the bar for coaching and front office hiring. In 2022, the league announced a new requirement that all teams must employ [not just interview] a female or minority coach as an offensive assistant.

I was shown a close up of the Dawson Knox hit incident which definitely showed that he was going into a fencer's pose when he was immediately run over by a Chiefs player and knocked out of the fencer's pose. He was given a quick blue tent visit and cleared. Only 2 1/2 weeks ago, he entered the Protocol suffering a concussion. This Concussion Protocol remains a joke.

Or we don't know what goes on inside the Redskins organization. Bienemy, like Pierce in Vegas may have been butting heads with Rivera the whole time & the owners took notice. Or they just want to make sure he was part of the problem.

Who knows?

The Browns/Watson salary cap is now beginning to take its effect on everything the Browns will want to do...........it's only the beginning.

I am sure the Haslam is hoping to all end that Watson holds up while the money holds out...............

Andrew Berry: Browns would love to have Joe Flacco back, but there are constraints
By Michael David Smith

Published January 22, 2024 02:48 PM

After showing up off the street in the middle of the season and leading Cleveland to the playoffs in 2023, Joe Flacco is heading for free agency in 2024. Whether the Browns re-sign him to back up Deshaun Watson remains to be seen.

Browns General Manager Andrew Berry noted that the situation with Flacco this year is similar to the situation with Jacoby Brissett last year: Brissett played well enough for the Browns to earn a one-year, $8 million contract with the Commanders, and that wasn’t an investment the Browns felt they could make given what they’re already spending on Deshaun Watson.

We’d absolutely love to have Joe back,” Berry said, via the Akron Beacon-Journal. “He’s a good quarterback, but I guess maybe a little bit similar to Jacoby last year. It depends, right? I want to bring all of our good players back, but there are constraints to that. I’m really kind of both sides of the aisle but would have no problem having Joe back.”

Those constraints are primarily about the salary cap. Flacco might want to go somewhere that he can compete for a starting job, and the Browns might not think they can justify the cap space it would take to pay Flacco, given that Watson has a whopping $64 million cap hit in 2024. When you’re paying that kind of cap space for your starting quarterback, you can’t devote a whole lot of cap space for your backup, or else you’re not going to have enough left for everyone else on the roster.

Realistically, the Browns may decide that they have to go into 2024 with just Watson and Dorian Thompson-Robinson on the 53-player roster. And they’ll hope that Watson stays healthier and plays better than he has so far in his tenure in Cleveland.

You cant hire who you want to hire if you're an owner. Gotta fill God'ells quota.

Why is the NFL stopping at the offensive assistant position?.............Isn't that a bit discriminatory (especially as concerns females) by definition.:chef:

Short leash in Philly! He was one of my top choices for Texans OC last year (but knowing he’d likely be elevated after Steichen got a HC job).

Would not be surprised if Steichen brings him in.

It's sad when a private affair like this goes public. But Hill who enjoys the spotlight, should have not have made it high profile from the beginning.

Tyreek Hill files petition for divorce only weeks after getting married
Published January 23, 2024 05:12 PM

This season’s Hard Knocks devoted plenty of time to the recent marriage of Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill. After just a matter of weeks, that marriage is over.

Via Daniel Oyefusi of the Miami Herald, Hill has filed a petition for divorce from Keeta Vaccaro. They were married during Miami’s bye week.

Ordinarily, matters involving the private lives of players aren’t relevant. Hill made his marriage relevant, between injecting the storyline into Hard Knocks and claiming that he re-entered a Monday night game in December with an ankle sprain after she told him during a halftime text exchange, “You better get your ass back in the game.”

More recently, a fire caused significant damage at Hill’s Miami-area mansion. It was caused by a young child playing with matches or a lighter.

Vaccaro is the sister of former NFL safety Kenny Vaccaro, a first-round pick in 2013 who spend five years with the Saints and three with the Titans.

UPDATE 5:18 p.m. ET: Hill posted on X a denial that he has filed for divorce. Both the Herald and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel have based their reporting on court records.

UPDATE 5:26 p.m. ET: The Herald has acknowledged Hill’s denial, but reiterates that the divorce petition was filed on Monday. The Herald also notes that Hill’s attorney declined to comment.
