NFL Random Thought of the Day

Terry Killens becomes the first person to both play in and officiate a Super Bowl
By Michael David Smith
Published January 23, 2024 03:22 PM

Terry Killens will earn a unique distinction in football history when he steps on the field as the umpire at Super Bowl LVIII: He’ll be the first person to both play in a Super Bowl and serve as an official in the Super Bowl.

The NFL announced today that Killens will be part of the Super Bowl LVIII officiating crew. This is Killens’ fifth season as an NFL official and his first Super Bowl assignment.

But it’s not his first time at the Super Bowl: Killens played for the Titans in their Super Bowl XXXIV loss to the Rams. A backup linebacker, Killens made one tackle in the game, on special teams.

The 49-year-old Killens was a third-round pick of the Houston Oilers out of Penn State in 1996. He stayed with the Oilers/Titans until 2000, then spent two seasons with the 49ers and one with the Seahawks. Before becoming an NFL official he worked at the college level in the AAC and at the pro level in the Alliance of American Football.

FRISCO, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys' 2024 offseason will be defined by what happens with Dak Prescott's contract.

The quarterback has a $59.4 million salary cap figure, second largest in the NFL behind the Cleveland Browns' Deshaun Watson. This is the final year of the four-year, $160 million deal Prescott signed after the 2020 season that included $126 million guaranteed.

Dak has ol Jerry by the short and curlies! No trade clause, and no franchise tag clause. Heard today from some talking head that they should see if he'd want to go to ATL. Get some draft picks. Atlanta has way better offensive talent than Dallas does. Easier division, etc. Worth the conversation for Jerry if I'm him.

Dallas animosity aside….this would be a great move for both parties. Dak needs a change of scenery instead of a new contract.

Vic Fangio is out as the defensive coordinator of the Miami Dolphins, who announced Wednesday that they have "mutually agreed to part ways" with the veteran assistant coach after one season.

Sirianni, meanwhile, described the search for a new offensive coordinator as "extensive," with a goal of bringing someone in with fresh ideas after the offense went "stale" down the stretch. While Sirianni has had his offensive coordinator call the plays for most of his time in Philly, he has long described it as his offense. But it appears the new offensive coordinator will have more creative control.
"A guy who has a vision, a guy who is going to call the plays, a guy who is going to be able to coach the quarterback in the same sense there, so it's just about getting the right guy," Sirianni said. "But I'm hiring him to do a job and to be in charge of the offense."

Harbaugh got the best position available. Even though the Chargers are 44M over the cap, they can scrap some Of the veteran contracts and build back through the draft.

The Chargers have all their picks at the 5th slot in every round and picked up an additional RD7 pick somewhere along the way. They’re in a sweet spot for picking new talent or moving back for more draft capital.
Harbaugh has a track record for winning…..and San Diego won’t be any

Wonder what caused the split? Fangio did a good job last season considering the injuries his unit had to deal with down the stretch. I have a hard time believing the Dolphins will find an upgrade at DC.

After one (decent) season. Smh.
I guess if the owner is pi$$ed enough about only going one and done in the post season there's nothing you can do about it.

So now hiring practices may be driven additionally by compensatory picks rather than via strictly talent/accomplishment.

Years of shoddy hiring practices justify NFL’s imperfect effort to clean up its own mess

Why can't it be both? We've been on this earth long enough to understand the good ole boy network. At least now if you make an effort you get compensation. It will never be equal because of comfortability.

Seems like the team doing the hiring should get a draft pick as well

Not only involving LSU, but reportedly involving himself..

You could see his frustration that game with Jayden Daniels trying to chill him out on the sideline, finishing with just 2 catches for 20 yards.

Also, an 8-leg parlay is insane.. just sayin.

Tyreek Hill says he fired “f—king bonehead” who filed divorce documents
By Mike Florio
Published January 26, 2024 04:57 PM

Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill apparently is looking for a new divorce lawyer, since he claims he wasn’t looking for a divorce.

Via TMZ.com, Hill said during a Twitch stream on Thursday night that he never gave his people the green light to file a petition for divorce earlier this week.

“I just gotta say that it sucks that . . . yeah, a lot of our stuff is public record,” Hill said. “But behind closed doors, a lot of people got fired, too, for just doing things without a ‘yes.’ . . .

“It sucks that me and my wife gotta go through that. Like yeah, public records says it and right now we’re in a spot of fixing it -- I fired the ******* bonehead that did that mistake. Now it sucks.”

Implicit within Hill’s comments is a concession that, yes, a petition for divorce was filed (despite his prior denial). Also, it sounds as if he gave the green light to the preparation of the paperwork, but not to the filing of it. Lawyers don’t just spontaneously prepare paperwork they haven’t been told to prepare. They do the work that their clients tell them to do, if they hope to get, you know, paid.

It’s possible Hill did indeed give the green light for the drafting and the filing of the petition, and that he didn’t realize his wife would find out about it before he wanted her to find out about it. If so, he needed an excuse. Saying the lawyers did it without approval was possibly the best thing he could come up with.

Finally, and most importantly, the petition hasn’t been dismissed. If it was filed without authorization and if Hill never meant for it to be filed, the first command to the lawyers should have been to fix it by dismissing it. The same database that shows the filing of the petition does not show that it has been dismissed.

And, again, this is newsworthy because: (1) Hill is a high-profile player; and (2) he previously injected his new marriage into his public narrative. Throw in the fact that he has spoken out about the situation with an eyebrow-raising explanation, yes, it’s news.

This dude got 3 women pregnant at the same time and he's blaming a lawyer?

"One gun was fired by one man," an animated District Attorney Jason Williams said during closing arguments, holding in the air the evidence-tagged handgun that Hayes fired, hitting Will Smith eight times -- seven in the back -- and hitting Racquel Smith in the legs.

Hayes had been convicted in December 2016 of manslaughter in Smith's death and attempted manslaughter for the gunshot wounding of Racquel Smith. But the jury vote was 10-2, and the conviction was tossed after the Supreme Court outlawed nonunanimous verdicts. Hayes was released on bond after having served more than four years of a 25-year sentence handed down by the same judge who will determine his sentence again.

Watson needs to relinquish his ridiculous contract if he wants to have a better support cast...............I won't hold my breath. And a better support cast is not likely to make up for his heretofore pathetic Browns performances.

Deshaun Watson wants Tee Higgins to jump from Bengals to Browns
By Mike Florio
Published January 27, 2024 07:32 PM

Bengals receiver Tee Higgins has worn an orange helmet for all of his four-year NFL career. If Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson has his way, Higgins will still wear an orange helmet in 2024. Without the stripes.

Watson, appearing on his personal quarterback coach Quincy Avery’s podcast, made a pitch for Higgins to leave Cincinnati but not Ohio.

“We wanna pass the ball,” Watson said, via Patrick Andres of SI.com. “That’s what we’re gonna do. We’re gonna pass the ball a lot.”

Watson hopes to be passing the ball to Higgins, who like Watson played college football at Clemson.

“We’re gonna take good care of you,” Watson said. “The Cleveland fans are gonna love you to death. We got the Clemson ties. We ain’t get to play with each other, but this is our opportunity.”

It’s unknown whether the Browns organization would have Higgins on their radar screen, if he becomes a free agent. While his contract is expiring, the Bengals have exclusive negotiating rights for now — along with the power to apply the franchise tag.

Cleveland already has plenty of cash and cap space tied up in pass catchers. Receiver Amari Cooper has a salary of $20 million and a cap charge of $23.776 million. Tight end David Njoku counts another $9.645 million against the cap next season.

And Watson himself has a massive $63.77 million cap charge for 2024. That easily can be reduced by restructuring his $46 million salary. But that approach kicks the can, driving up his cap charges in future years. Already, the Browns have pushed $8.894 million of Watson’s five-year, fully guaranteed deal into 2027, the year after the expiration of his current contract.

Watson’s cap number for each of the next three years is currently $63.977 million. Adding a receiver at a market-value will make it harder to put enough great players around Watson, especially with so many great young receivers now entering the draft every year.

Thus, while it’s easy for players like Watson on the team to dabble in fantasy football, the reality continues to be the salary cap. There’s only so much money to go around.

The good news is that the cap keeps going up and up, making it easier for teams to absorb big contracts. It remains to be seen whether the Browns will explore giving one to Higgins — assuming the Bengals neither sign him to a long-term deal nor apply the franchise tag.

It’s hard to imagine the Bengals letting Higgins get away. Ja’Marr Chase is receiver 1A in Cincinnati, and Higgins is 1B. Even if they have to pay both guys big contracts, the Bengals would be wise to find a way to keep both of them around.

Especially if a division rival is lurking.

I’m interested in seeing how the Lions trade of Stafford compares with the Texans trade of Watson over the years. Some hits and misses from both so far. Obviously have to put Lions in the lead since they are still playing today but to be fair they are a year ahead of Houston ;)

But most importantly, every team appears to have “won” their trade except the Browns! :)

Full trade details
So to truly appreciate the Matthew Stafford trade in its entirety, you have to view it like this:
Detroit Lions received:
  • Jared Goff.
  • Jahmyr Gibbs.
  • Sam LaPorta
  • Ifeatu Melifonwu
  • Jameson Williams.
  • Joshua Pascal.
  • Brodric Martin.
Detroit Lions traded:
  • Matthew Stafford.
  • No. 34 overall pick in 2022 (to Vikings).
  • No. 66 overall pick in 2022 (to Vikings).
  • No. 81 overall pick in 2023 (to Cardinals).
  • No. 122 overall pick in 2023 (to Cardinals).
  • No. 139 overall pick in 2023 (to Cardinals).

Mar 18, 2021: Rams traded Jared Goff, 2021 3rd round pick (101st overall, Ifeatu Melifonwu), 2022 1st round pick (32nd overall subsequently traded , Lewis Cine) and 2023 1st round pick (6th overall subsequently traded , Paris Johnson) to Lions for Matthew Stafford
Apr 27, 2023: Lions traded 2023 1st round pick (6th overall, Paris Johnson) and 2023 3rd round pick (81st overall subsequently traded , Tyjae Spears) to Cardinals for 2023 1st round pick (12th overall, Jahmyr Gibbs), 2023 2nd round pick (34th overall, Sam LaPorta) and 2023 5th round pick (168th overall subsequently traded , Owen Pappoe)

I think the Lions clearly won that deal, hands down

Morgan Moses fined for using a camera as a prop to celebrate Lamar Jackson TD
By Michael David Smith
Published January 28, 2024 05:50 AM

After Lamar Jackson scored the game-clinching touchdown in last weekend’s win over the Texans, Ravens offensive lineman Morgan Moses grabbed a photographer’s camera amid the end zone celebration. The NFL fined him for that.

Moses was fined $13,659, the league announced, for what was termed unsportsmanlike conduct.

The NFL does not allow players to use props in celebrations, and they’re fined if they break that rule. If the photographer went along with Moses using the camera, the photographer could be in hot water as well: In November the NFL suspended the credentials of the man who handed Tyreek Hill a phone to use in his backflip celebration.

Moses was the only player the NFL fined for on-field conduct during the divisional round of the playoffs. No fines for illegal hits or personal foul penalties. Just for a touchdown celebration.

I don't understand the rationale
The minority coaches didn't want to have impression that teams were getting paid (via draft choices) to hire them as head coaches. The teams that were developing the minority coordinators to become head coaches received the draft compensation, instead.

Looking at the deal today. But remember the Rams have a Lombardi in their trophy case. Let's see if the Lions can pull that off.

Agreed. It’s the rare case where both teams get what they want in a trade. Rams wanted a QB who could deliver them a Super Bowl right now. They got that.

Lions wanted to get ammo to build a perennial contender. It looks like they got that.

If they both win the Superbowl than that’s the definition of a good trade. Rams were in win now mode and Lions were still adding pieces. Paid off for both.
