NFL Random Thought of the Day

“Yeah, Zach has played well,” said head coach Nick Sirriani when asked by SI.com Eagles Today if starting him was an indication of how far he has come since his arrival. “One of the reasons why he was in there (Thursday night because he’s played really well. Really excited about where he is.”
***
Wow that's really interesting ! Titans also cut Zack after he was let go here right ?
Well I dunno but whatever he was doing wrong it sure looks like he's got his act together now, an with no less of group than the powerhouse Eagles defense, guy might end up with a SB ring.

Bills QB Matt Barkley throws three interceptions in 12 attempts at Steelers
By Mike Florio

Published August 20, 2023 10:13 AM
The Bills have an open competition for No. 2 quarterback. On Saturday night in Pittsburgh, veteran Matt Barkley might have slammed the door in his own face with a performance that conjures memories of Nathan Peterman’s misadventures against the Chargers.

Barkley had three interceptions in 12 throws against the Steelers. Barkley also had a fumble, which Pittsburgh recovered.
The hit that knocked the ball loose resulted in an elbow injury for Barkley.

In the first preseason game, Barkley played better than newcomer Kyle Allen. In the second game, Allen performed better than Barkley, completing 12 of 15 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown.

Neither candidate to back up Josh Allen has seized the job. It’s hard not to wonder whether the Bills are considering other options for the No. 2 job.

If either Barkley or Allen win the No. 2 spot on the roster, the question then becomes whether the Bills will carry a third quarterback on the 53-man roster. In order to dress a third quarterback on game day, a team must have three on the active roster.

Bills OT Tommy Doyle was carted off the field in an air cast on his left leg yesterday. He injured that same leg in last week's preseason game.......it was called a "contusion." What is significant is that he had just come back from a season-ending ACL rupture. The team reported that he sustained a severe knee injury. But an air cast only goes from the toes to just below the knee. An air splint can go all the up the thigh. [the terminology air cast vs air splint may have been misused] If an air cast was used, you would suspect a possible tibial fracture or foot or ankle injury. An air splint could be used to subtedly immobilize the knee and/or bring down or prevent severe swelling. The knee injury could easily include an ACL rupture. We will have to wait for a further update.

If a player wanted to wear a Guardian Cap during a game, the league would prohibit it
Aug 20, 2023 01:35 PM

The Guardian Cap has become an effective tool for limiting head trauma in training-camp practices. And the news regarding the 52-reduction in concussions could make a player inclined to use it during a game.

On Saturday, a coach raised that very question with us. What if a player who likes the Guardian Cap and feels safer wearing it wants to use it during a game?

So we asked the league. And the answer would be no.

“A player would be prohibited from wearing a Guardian Cap during a game,” chief NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said via email. McCarthy also pointed out comments from NFL executive V.P. Jeff Miller during a recent media call regarding health and safety issues.

“What I do think, ultimately, over the next two, or three, or five years is that some of the improvements made to overall helmets will incorporate some benefits of the Guardian Cap,” Miller said. “In other words, the offensive lineman-specific helmet will probably — probably — have the same benefit to a player as wearing a regular helmet as a Guardian Cap would.

And so you may not need a Guardian Cap. Or, another add-on — which I don’t contemplate right now — for the Guardian Cap itself, is it will evolve in such a way that it will mitigate even more of the forces without any detrimental impact.

“Because that’s part of the equation here, too. I was really excited by the benefit that we saw from Guardian Caps this past year, but we were interested in studying the heat, interested in studying the neck forces and potential stingers, interested in getting the player feedback — as we are this year with the modified Guardian Cap — before we make any informed decisions with the [NFL] Players’ Association about what happens next. I do think, to answer the question, the technology will continue to evolve — I think relatively quickly — and I think with player feedback last year and this year on the Guardian Cap, we’ll be able to make more informed decisions about what the future of it looks like.”

As a practical matter, the league and its helmet partners are now in a race to innovate helmet design that provides Guardian
Cap-style protection with the normal look of a helmet. While the league would likely never put it this way, aesthetics matter. How the game looks on TV. Helmets and colors and logos.

The Guardian Cap objectively doesn’t look good. It’s big and it’s bulky and it makes the helmet look like someone tried to soundproof it with egg cartons.

Still, until better helmets are made, the possibility of a player insisting on wearing the Guardian Cap lingers. And if a player chooses to push the issue, the league might not have any choice but to relent.
What if, for example, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa asked for permission to wear one? What if, after the league said no, Tua suffered another concussion?

For now, the league needs to hope no player makes a public push to wear the Guardian Cap during games — and the league needs to come up with a better helmet that provides the same protection as the Guardian Cap while also looking like a normal helmet.

Of course they would. Which makes the Bennett ❤ look a little silly, don't you think? He's not the Rams future QB.
He's a good QB well worth a 4th rd pick. They will take Williams or Maye because they have franchise QB ability. They won't be forcing a QB pick. As far as Bennett goes, quality QB depth matters as the Rams, Titans etc.... know all to well. I also have McCarthy rated highly.

This really comes down to which QB class do you think is better and are you willing to be patient? The McNair's have answered that question the way I expected them to answer it.

Finally found a picture of Tommy Boyle on the cart. It seems to be neither a classic Aircast or an air splint...........It appears to be an ice wrap knee immobilizer.

Vikings TE T.J. Hockenson has essentially missed most of TC with what he now calls an ear infection which has affected his balance. These are usually caused by a viral infection of the inner ear. Symptoms typically will resolve in 1-2 weeks. Three weeks and you begin to be concerned about permanent damage to the nerve that sends messages of balance from the inner ear to the brain [vestibular neuritis] or to the gyroscope structures of the inner ear that control balance [labyrinthitus]. These conditions cause vertigo (usually experienced as a spinning sensation), dizziness, imbalance, unsteadiness and sometimes problems with vision or hearing. In a healthy balance system, the brain combines messages sent by the balance control systems in both ears, but if one side is affected, the messages from that side are distorted, causing symptoms of dizziness and vertigo. He needs to see resolution sooner than later. Hopefully this will occur. Otherwise it could mean loss of significant time in the regular season, or worse. Prayers for the young man.

Former Bears running back Tarik Cohen is trying to get back into the NFL. He tore his ACL and MCL during the 2020 season and missed the entire 2021 season while recovering from those knee injuries. He was released by the Bears in March 2022 and then tore his Achilles while working out on his own a couple of months later. As a RB with history of such injuries, his effective future in the NFL has got to be highly questionable. But kudos for his persistence.

Wonder if the Texans follow suit?

Panthers “want to get more reps” for Bryce Young, starters in preseason finale
By Josh Alper
Published August 22, 2023 08:05 AM

The Panthers will kick off their third preseason game the same way they started the first two.

Quarterback Bryce Young and the rest of the team’s starters will be on the field to open their final exhibition contest of the summer. Young has attempted 12 passes through the first two weeks and head coach Frank Reich said on Monday that they “still want to get more reps” for the first team before the start of the regular season.

That approach appears to be just fine with Young.

“This is by design,” Young said, via the team’s website. “I trust the coaches wholeheartedly in their approach, what they’re doing, the play-calling, everything. For me, I’ve never played in a preseason game. Like there’s scrimmages in high school,

I guess, but I’ve never played a game [where] the starters aren’t playing as much as they can. Obviously, that’s part of the league. It’s just something that’s new for me to adjust to. But our coaching staff, they’ve been here for years. They’ve had a ton of success. I have all the respect in the world for them. They don’t wake up the day before the game and just try to figure it out. They have a reason. They have a plan. Whatever that is, I don’t question it. I just go in and try to execute.”
Reich said the Panthers will “play it by ear” when it comes to how much Young and company will be playing as they try to ensure that they are ready to roll against the Falcons on September 11.

Jaxon Smith-Njigba made the last Cowboys preseason game even more costly. He came down on his wrist breaking his fall on a pass, fracturing his wrist. From the position of his fall, it is evident to me that the fracture must be of his scaphoid bone, a bone with poor blood supply and therefore little ability to heal spontaneoulsly. He will require surgery. The team says he could be bakc as soon as week 1. They are dreaming. He will be lucky as a WR to be back by week 4.

Marcus Maye sentenced to six months probation in DUI case
By Josh Alper

Saints safety Marcus Maye’s changed his plea on DUI charges from not guilty to no contest and he received his sentence on Tuesday.

Maye was sentenced to six months of probation and his driver’s license will be suspended for the same amount of time. He was also sentenced to 50 hours of community service.

“Mr. Maye’s legal saga has come to a conclusion today and he looks forward to focusing on football,” Maye’s attorney Eric Schwartzreich said, via Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com.

Maye initially faced charges of driving under the influence, DUI/damage to property and person, and leaving the scene of the crash as a result of the February 2021 incident.

The NFL could impose further discipline on Maye for his actions.

And so it starts with JSN. I was expecting soft tissue injury first. I just don't see this guy being durable for the NFL

Commanders WR Terry McLaurin is another player that the team is highly unrealistic re. return. They are saying he has a chance of playing week 1. A turf toe in a WR will have problems with taking off, stopping, accelerating and cutting short of 5-6 weeks, with longer effects in the same season common.

Google/YouTube become caught up in lingering Sunday Ticket class action
By Mike Florio

Published August 23, 2023 06:38 AM

Google’s expensive purchase of the NFL’s Sunday Ticket package has come with a free side of litigation.
According to Reuters, Google has been sued for information relevant to the pending class action lawsuit against the NFL and DirecTV over the Sunday Ticket package.

Google allegedly has failed and refused to provide information regarding retail pricing, rights fees, and subscriber numbers for Sunday Ticket. Google previously has claimed that the production of the requested information would be “unduly burdensome.” Eventually, Google agreed to provide only three documents, characterized as “summary presentations” regarding the arrangement with the league.

The apparent goal is to explore whether the NFL placed restrictions on Google similar to restrictions allegedly placed on DirecTV regarding the price of the package and the requirement that consumers purchase all games over all weeks, or none at all.

“Evidence that the NFL imposed restrictions on Google will support plaintiffs’ claims that the NFL imposed these same restraints on DirecTV during the class period, to the detriment of consumers,” attorneys for the class alleged in the new claim against Google and YouTube.

The effort to prove NFL control and influence over Google’s pricing comes at a time when the league has filed what’s known as a motion for summary judgment in the case. The basic argument in such motions is that there is no need for a trial because there is no dispute regarding any material fact that must be resolved by a jury, and that the case can be resolved by the judge applying the law to the undisputed record in the case.

The question becomes whether the NFL fixed Sunday Ticket pricing in a way that violates antitrust law. Suggestions have emerged that Apple, which bid on the package, wanted to make Sunday Ticket available to consumers at a much lower price.

The league enjoys a broadcast antitrust exemption, but there could be limits to the application of the license to shop TV rights as a collective. This litigation could test, and could show, that there are certain things that can’t be done when it comes to setting the price and the terms that consumers must pay to watch their favorite teams’ game, if those games aren’t broadcast in the relevant local market.

Pete Carrol obviously knows nothing about scaphoid wrist fractures [which has been now confirmed]. A "slight fracture" of a scaphoid fracture's healing capacity is no different that a complete fracture. In Carrol's proposed timeline, even with a secure screw repair, Smith-Njigba would have to play with a hard splint..........which for a WR is never going to happen. And even with no trauma, a repaired scaphoid is notorious for delayed or non union/poor healing........~10%. If union does not properly occur with this fracture, it typically can take anywhere from 3-6 months to ultimately heal. They better not screw around with this young man, especially so early in a promising career.

Would Jerry prefer the guys drive with Sam Williams?

Off field concerns caused Williams to fall in the draft. There is a reason players fall due to off field concerns:

How 'bout dem Cowboys, @steelbtexan?
