NFL Random Thought of the Day

The Colts have named Richardson their starting QB for the 2023 season.

"It only took one play" for Carter to make a statement. That's good, because that's about how many plays Carter makes in a given game. If fact, he didn't even make the tackle on the highlighted play.

Lions WR Jameson Williams sustained a Grade II right hamstring tear in practice yesterday, meaning he won't be able to return for the preseason and longer. Having lost last season to an ACL, the preseason for him was very important, especially since he is suspended for the first 6 games of this season for gambling. As I've posted in the past, a WR coming off of an ACL foresees significant performance decline and increased risk for subsequent injuries. It should be noted that earlier this summer, sustained a hamstring injury to his opposite leg. When he is able to return in week 7, he will have significant challenges to overcome.

Buccaneers WR Russell Gage was carted off at yesterday's practice with a knee injury. It is apparently a patellar tendon rupture, making him lucky to even return next season............or even ever. A return to play after this injury is only 50%. Furthermore, of all common football injuries, the patellar tendon rupture has long offered the lowest rate of recovery to pre-injury effectiveness. Of course, isolated exceptions can always be found.

These "X" posters are losing their shiite over a 34 yard pass. I remember posting a 60 yard pass by Bryce Young that was dropped into the receiver's bucket with 2 defenders hanging off him. Only to get comments like, "Young had to step into that throw. He'll never have a chance to throw that in the NFL."
It's not just "X" posters who are losing their shiite.

That dude is half his size. Just saying. lol
Man can you imagine a DL with Anderson Davis and Carter after trading up. This would've been the best young DL that can grow over the next decade. Athletic stars. Watch how good Philly is going to be with Carter, Davis and Smith. They're going to be pretty good for a long time.

Ah!!! What could have been.

Well looking on the bright side he should be healed and ready to go by week 7.

Davis, Carter, Smith, and Ringo all drafted in my live draft.

All reports say that Carter has been killing it in Eagles camp. We will see once the season begins, but it looks like I may be eating a healthy portion of crow.

I wanted Jordan Davis last year at 12. I was pounding the table but apparently the Texans viewed him as a mismatch with Lovie’s D, and a rotation player. Instead they drafted an oft injured Guard. You guys see any issues with this decision making? To me, you can find a quality G in the 2nd or 3 rd and while Green looked like a physical guy and all that…given the injury history and lack of athleticism to help as much in the pass game…I just think that Nick blew that pick badly. Green is trending quickly toward bust territory imho.

Last question is for Doc or anyone else that can confirm - is it just me or do more ACL and other knee injuries occur in camps then the entire season. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems every year there are lots of serious knee issues in camp. If I’m right, is this due to conditioning or what is the cause?

No. Because Davis is a rotation player. He played 26% of the defensive snaps his rookie season, and he never played as much as 50% of the snaps at Georgia. Davis had zero sacks and 1 pressure during his 1st year in the league.

When was Kenyon Green an oft injured player in college? Green started every game during his 3 years at A&M, playing 3 different positions. Yes, Green was injured during his rookie season. But, he played through it. 15 of the 17 games. 88% of the offensive snaps. Did Green's performance suffer due to injuries? Sure. But give me the guy that shows up and punches his time card over a guy that misses 4 games and can't stay on the field without gassing. Every Sunday.

I've been thinking the same, the past couple of days...Texans just may have to cut bait with Green after this year. Ryans and staff, and Caserio, may even be shopping after cut down in two weeks.

I disagree that Caserio should be saddled with the blame. Green was our 1/15 pick and the decision was likely made by headcoach Smith, offensive coordinator Hamilton and offensive linecoach Warhop. Caserio more likely conceded to their decision. It's just not reasonable that a GM would override a newly hired coaching staff.

I think the same will be true for the 2024 draft. It will be Ryans and his assistants who will be making the decision on Green and potentially drafting or signing his replacement in 2024. Of course Caserio will have a GM's input.

According to CND, he had multiple injuries in college and was an injury risk prior to the draft. All teams had his injury history. I don't have the time to find Doc's info on Green but it's available on this forum. I would still have taken Davis. First - he would have had more snaps here than on an ultra-deep Philly line. It's not an apples to apples comparison. And if you'll remember how awful last year's team played the run, a guy who can really control the middle of the line seems like a logical selection. So...I'm standing by my original idea on last year's first round. Davis > Green.

What's done is done, but this team needs to stop drafting injury risks that high in the draft. There were much better selections if they didn't like Davis.

And looks like Ray Lewis with his arrest record connected to the death of an innocent person.

I'm shocked that you, of all folks, are drooling over this dude.
I'm not shocked. He doesn't play for the Texans. His agent isn't Mulugeta. He has never mentioned Watson, Vick or Moon. He didn't attend Clemson and most importantly....his parents are not Nigerian doctors.

After playing behind Fletcher Cox, Davis is now a starter this year. They will try and do the same thing with Carter and Smith but they may be too good to keep off of the field. With the addition of Carter and Smith the Eagles will now have one of the best DL in the league for the next decade. This is a result of a GM who can plan for the future instead of just the season at hand.

Kenyon Green had one the worst athletic performances at the Combine. Warhop loved Green's 34" arms and why he drafted him. This smells like Lovie promising Warhop a 1st RD pick if Warhop took the job.

You guys see any issues with this decision making? What I see is your typical Houston Texans McNair DYSFUNCTION. This has come to be what is expected. Why I said that the Texans will piss away the bounty they received for Watson. They are 2/3 of the way there. After the Browns 2024 draft pick ends up in the back half of the draft and Arizona is picking in the Top 10, this FUBAR will be completed.

Fighting is just another marketing tool that brings more "fan interest"........and more rivalry money. The NFL has never been interested in player safety..........unless forced to. The NFL's only honest interest is in their bank deposits. Their ultimate goal is to decrease the number of preseason games............and heavily monetize more joint practices.

Limiting joint practices to one day could wipe out most of the fighting
Published August 19, 2023 09:49 AM

The NFL doesn’t seem to be inclined to do anything about fighting in joint practices, for some strange reason. There’s another way to reduce incidents that could eventually get a player, coach, official, or fan injured during joint practices.
Limit them to one day.

Jets coach Robert Saleh recently explained his preference for restricting joint practices to one day and one day only.

“I like one [joint practice] from a safety measure standpoint,” Saleh told reporters. “I never like two practices, because a second practice is usually when the injuries happen. And then the second practice is when the team that knows they kind of got beat, they go into their meeting rooms, and the coaches are yelling at them. And then they come out and they play with a little more edge and it pisses each other off and all the melees happen.

“And so I just think the second day is very unproductive, except for trying to be reactionary to getting your butt kicked the day before. So it’s a lot more productive if you have one. It’s a lot safer from a player safety standpoint, and you can get a lot more work done on your own. And you’re only a couple of days away from a game, too. So you don’t want that physical of a practice that close to a game.

“So there’s a lot of reasons for it, mainly safety for the players. And production of work, just avoiding all those useless melees.”

The league professes to be concerned about player safety during games. And given the recent prevalence of Guardian Caps, the league clearly is concerned about reducing concussions in practice.

That only makes the league’s decision to bury its head in the sand on the skirmishes at joint practices even more confusing.
We’ve been leading the charge in recent days to get the league to pay more (any) attention to this. It shouldn’t be that way.

The league should be doing it without external pressure. It should be an obvious issue to be addressed — unless the truth is that the league is willing to tolerate the increased injury risk because the video of practice fights drives more interest at a time when the games that count haven’t started yet.

Based on the way that many fans have reacted to our call for less post-whistle violence in joint practices, there’s a decent chance that’s exactly the reason for the NFL’s inaction.

As a coach with primarily a defensive background I'd think it's more likely that somebody else like the GM made the decision to draft an interior offensive lineman that high but like you I certainly don't know it's just me speculating.

Yea it seems logical that Demeco and his hand-picked OC will have a great deal more to say about all offensive personnel than either of his predecessors did.
