NFL Random Thought of the Day

Shanahan reacts to Purdy's on-field incident at 49ers practice

One moment from the 49ers' second week of practice is burned in coach Kyle Shanahan’s mind.
Thankfully, the play when defensive lineman Clelin Ferrell’s hand came down towards Brock Purdy’s throwing arm ended up as harmless near miss. But that still doesn’t mean Shanahan will forget.
“I had hold my breath so I didn’t lose my mind,” Shanahan said. “I could see he was alright but, it’s human nature. The only way you can finish a sack is if you run, run and reach. And those guys do it and that’s why we have to get on them all the time not to do it, because it’s human nature."

At the Texans week 1 opponent's training camp, things aren't going well with the Raven's new offense install.

The frustration from members of the Baltimore Ravens offense over the past few days of training camp has been visible and audible.

After Thursday’s practice, which was only a walk-through, new offensive coordinator Todd Monken said bluntly, “It’s not hard to project because we’re not really good right now. We have a long way to go.”

Friday’s practice included quarterback Lamar Jackson punting a football and tossing aside his helmet after another blitzer got a free run at him and forced him to throw the ball away, and Jackson’s favorite target, tight end Mark Andrews, flipping off and yelling an expletive at a referee for not calling defensive pass interference.

The Ravens have moved on from long time NFL OC Greg Roman and plucked Todd Monken from FBS champion Georgia. Monken does have NFL OC experience with stints at Tampa Bay and Cleveland. On paper, the matchup at Baltimore looks like one of the most difficult of the season. And likely will be. But, I would much rather the Texans face a Ravens offense possibly not in full sync by week 1 than play them later in the season.

Great find!

New Personal Conduct Policy expands reporting obligation for players
By Mike Florio
Published August 6, 2023 08:28 AM

The recent changes to the Personal Conduct Policy don’t arise completely from the NFL’s misadventures in the Deshaun Watson case.

One change arises in part from receiver Antonio Brown’s short-lived stint with the Patriots in 2019.

After Brown finagled his release from the Raiders, the Patriots signed him. Then, after only one game, Brown was sued for sexual assault and rape. It later came to light that Brown knew of the threatened litigation before signing with the Patriots, but that he did not disclose it to them.

The Personal Conduct Policy now imposes an obligation on all players to disclose potential violations to teams before signing contracts with them.

“In addition, active and prospective players have an obligation to promptly disclose any such incidents to their club or the league office before signing a contract with a club,” the revised policy states.

The Patriots gave Brown a $9 million signing bonus. He was cut after only 11 days, after the lawsuit led to additional reporting, including allegations he attempted to intimidate an alleged victim. The Patriots then declined to pay the first installment of the signing bonus.

The ensuing grievance filed by Brown against the Patriots was later settled. Which implies that the Patriots paid something.
Per a league source, the revisions did indeed result from the Brown case “and a few others.”

The new language of the Personal Conduct Policy will be aimed at ensuring, in the future, any failure to disclose a potential Personal Conduct Policy violation before the signing of a contract would become a conclusive defense to owing the player a dime, if he’s cut after the truth comes to light.

Kyler Murray is 8 months since his ACL. For a QB like Murray, I wouldn't be surprised to see him begin the season on PUP. If he plays any time before week 8, he will have to convert to a pocket passer, as skill players need max time in order to effectively cut and suddenly stop.

NFLPA scraps its postseason bowl game
By Mike Florio
Published August 8, 2023 01:19 PM

The NFLPA Collegiate Bowl is no more.

In one of the first tangible developments from the new union regime under executive director Lloyd Howell, the NFL Players Association has announced that the plug has been pulled on the annual college all-star game.

“After much deliberation, we have decided to bring our game to a close and take the Collegiate Bowl experience in another direction that better aligns with our goals,” the union announced on Monday.

The NFLPA had conducted the game for 12 straight years.

The statement provided no specific basis for the decision to shutter the game. Regardless, it appears that new union management has decided to take things in a new direction.

The NFLPA has fallen quiet, for the most part, since Howell was elected last month. The union has not been responding to inquiries, on nearly every topic. It seems to be part of a general media standoffishness that definitely does not align with the NFLPA’s goals. Whether the union realizes it or not.

Looks like DE Trey Flowers has returned to NE after stints with the Lions and Dolphins,,,,,,,,,,,,that were unimpressive (only 2 sacks since 2019 when he last played for NE). He suffered a foot injury last Sept and has not played since. He begins on PUP, but is expected to begin practice soon.

Cowboys right guard Zack Martin has missed 12 training camp practices in a contract holdout. That has amounted to $600,000 in fines the team cannot rescind. :shades:
I wonder if Martin is really that good ?
I'm sure I dunno but I learned a long time ago that the number of pro-bowls a player is elected to is more a function of the size of
his teams fan base than his proficiency on the field of play.

Sadly, Mack has ruptured his Achilles at yesterday's late practice. He was a perfect setup, having been placed on IR at the end of last season with a grade II hamstring tear.............and then another grade II hamstring injury just 5 weeks ago.

Isn’t this his second achilles tear? He was not the same player after the first one. I’d think this is a career ender now.

This just seems silly.

Mike Vrabel: We’ve decided on starting QB for Saturday, not sharing that info
By Josh Alper
Published August 10, 2023 10:24 AM

A lot of teams have announced their plans at quarterback for their opening preseason game, but the Titans won’t be joining them.

Head coach Mike Vrabel told reporters on Thursday that the team has made a decision about whether Ryan Tannehill, Malik Willis, or Will Levis will take the first offensive snap before being asked if Willis would be that quarterback. Vrabel said it’s “not a decision we’re gonna share.”

Willis is listed as the No. 2 quarterback behind Tannehill on the team’s depth chart. Levis, who was a second-round pick in April, is listed as the No. 3, which means the pecking order is the same as Vrabel said it was heading into training camp.

While we don’t know the identity of the starting quarterback, we do know that the Titans will have a different head coach than Vrabel. Assistant head coach/defensive line coach Terrell Williams will handle the head coaching duties against the Bears this Saturday.

Joey Bosa eating 4,500 to 5,000 calories a day in effort to gain weight
By Michael David Smith
Published August 10, 2023 10:40 AM

Chargers outside linebacker Joey Bosa says he’s eating absurd quantities of food in an effort to gain weight this offseason.

Bosa said he eats 4,500 to 5,000 calories a day and is trying to bulk up to get stronger and harder for offensive linemen to move. Bosa weighed in at 269 pounds at the 2016 Scouting Combine, but he said he has lost weight during his NFL career in an effort to get quicker, and he played last year at about 250 pounds.

Eating isn’t really enjoyable these days,” Bosa said, via Lindsey Thiry of ESPN. “It’s more so just part of the job.”

Bosa said he stuck with his usual offseason workout routine, just added a lot more food to it.

“Was able to stay consistent with all the things that I normally would do,” Bosa said. “But the key to gaining weight is just to eat a lot. Eat way more than you want to. And it’s no fun a lot of the time.”
Bosa says he feels stronger, and a stronger Bosa has the potential to be a nightmare for opposing offensive linemen.

This just seems silly.

Reports: Bills’ stadium project to cost hundreds of millions more than budgeted
By Michael David Smith

Published August 10, 2023 04:57 AM
The Bills’ new stadium may cost a whole lot more than the team was planning for.

Three months after construction started, cost overruns are projected to hit $300 million, according to the Associated Press.

The original estimate was $1.4 billion and is now approaching $1.7 billion, according to the report. TheAthletic.com reported that the price could eventually reach $1.9 billion.

Bills COO John Roth, who was hired three weeks ago after the Bills fired Ron Raccuia, said it’s too early to say what the actual price will be.

“We don’t know enough yet to confirm this,” Roth said.
Taxpayers are paying $850 million for the stadium. The Bills are on the hook for cost overruns.

They will cut funding to education to pay for it. No problem.
