NFL Random Thought of the Day

Bengals DT Renell Wren has suffered what appears to be a partial quadriceps tendon tear. He will be evaluated for surgery. Even a partial tear of quad tendon in an NFL DT needs to be surgically repaired if total rupture is to be avoided.
Wren has been placed on IR. Will undergo surgery.

T.J. Logan carted off at Bucs practice
Posted by Josh Alper on August 20, 2020, 12:13 PM EDT

One of the players vying for a role in Tampa’s backfield needed assistance getting off the field at Thursday’s practice.

Running back T.J. Logan was carted off after being tackled from behind by linebacker Quinton Bell. The injury came a play after the offense and defense did some pushing and shoving during an 11-on-11 drill and head coach Bruce Arians said after the session that players have to know the limits while working with their teammates.

“When we’re in the non-tackling period, I don’t want to tackle,” Arians said, via Eduardo Encina of the Tampa Bay Times. “When we tackle, we tackle. But the last thing you do is grab a jersey. I can see you on film if you’re going to make a tackle or not. We’ll see how that goes, how it plays out. But there’s a certain practice etiquette you have to follow. Young guys happen to struggle with that.”

************************************************************

There's absolutely no excuse for this happening.........tackling in a non-tackling drill. Looks like lack of discipline byh both the offense and defense led to this incident. But making it so much more egregregious is the fact that Bell snapped Logan back by the shirt prior to the tackle.
It's unfortunate, but Logan has been placed on IR and will require surgery for a ruptured patellar tendon.

Chargers WR Mike Williams has been reported to have a shoulder injury. The Chargers are are saying he will be out just a "couple of week." From what I hearing, it does not seem to be shoulder subluxation or dislocation, so I feel that is a very short prediction for his return. The injury seems to be a shoulder separation since e's not expected to come back before a couple of weeks.........likely a grade II or grade III. I would not be surprised to see him on the PUP before the season.

I've been out of the loop for a while and they may have changed the rules, but don't they have to put him on PUP before TC starts?
That's the PUP/active list.............and if he is able to come off that list prior to the end of TC, then he can play week 1. If that player is unable to play during TC or if during TC for the first time he is unable to play, he must be placed on the PUP/reserve list, which means he cannot play in the regular season until week 7.

League is considering fake crowd noise in range of 70-85 decibels
August 25, 2020, 11:51 PM EDT

Fans may not be present for games in most NFL stadiums, but it will sound like they are.

Per a league source, the NFL currently is considering the use of artificial crowd noise in the range of 70 to 85 decibels for games without fans present. As the source explained it, the sound level likely would be constant throughout the game, regardless of whether the home team or the visiting team has the ball.

In response to a request for comment, a league spokesman said, “We are finalizing plans.”

If the final plan entails the same sound level throughout the game, that creates a different competitive balance question than the league’s decision to let some teams host fans while others can’t. For a team like the Vikings, who have a significant home-field advantage coming from the noise generated by the fans who pack their stadium, the sound under normal circumstances will be lower when the Vikings have the ball and higher (significantly) when the Vikings are playing defense. Replacing that with artificial noise that remains at the same level for both teams at all times would not simulate normal crowd noise in that venue, largely wiping out Minnesota’s home-field advantage.

This approach will hurt both that have raucous home stadiums primarily consisting of their own fans, along with teams that have a nationwide footprint that results in plenty of their fans attending road games. (Some teams fall into both categories.) In contrast, this approach will help teams that are required to play on the road in loud venues, like in Minnesota, Seattle, or Kansas City, along with teams that either play in partially or largely empty stadiums and/or stadiums overrun by fans of the visiting team.

Lewd cheerleader videos, sexist rules: Ex-employees decry Washington's NFL team workplace

In "Beauties on the Beach," the official video chronicling the making of the Washington NFL team's 2008 cheerleader swimsuit calendar, the women frolic in the sand, rave about their custom bikinis and praise a photographer for putting them at ease in settings where sometimes only a strategically placed prop or tightly framed shot shielded otherwise bare breasts.

What the cheerleaders didn't know was that another video, intended strictly for private use, would be produced using footage from that same shoot. Set to classic rock, the 10-minute unofficial video featured moments when nipples were inadvertently exposed as the women shifted positions or adjusted props.

The lewd outtakes were what Larry Michael, then the team's lead broadcaster and a senior vice president, referred to as "the good bits" or "the good parts," according to Brad Baker, a former member of Michael's staff. Baker said in an interview that he was present when Michael told staffers to make the video for team owner Daniel Snyder.

This is creepy AF.

What an absolute dumpster fire that once mighty franchise has become under Daniel Snyder.

Bears RB David Montgomery sustained what was initially believed to be a knee injury. But now is being called a groin injury.
This video that found shows that in a handoff, his left foot forcefully slid off to the side. This is what we would typically result in an adductor tear.

I would have to call this at least a Grade II adductor tear...........which would possibly allow him to return to training when the pain is resolved.............~3-6 weeks. But full healing may not be for 2-3 months.

It will be important for him [especially as a RB] to resume activities gradually, in order to prevent him from developing a recurrent groin strain injury, a risk he will empirically carry the rest of the season.

Report: Jason Peters wants more money if he’s moving to left tackle
Posted by Michael David Smith on August 29, 2020, 12:19 PM EDT

When the Eagles lost left tackle Andre Dillard to a biceps injury, it seemed logical to move Jason Peters back to that position: Although Peters signed with the Eagles this offseason to take the place of the injured right guard Brandon Brooks, Peters had previously been the Eagles’ starting left tackle, and he could move back into that role now.

But there may be an issue holding that up: The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that Peters wants to be paid like a starting left tackle if he’s going to be one. That would mean he’s asking for a significant raise from the one-year, $3 million contract he signed last month to play right guard.

Peters, his agent and the Eagles have all publicly declined comment on whether Peters is expecting a pay raise to go with a new position. Eagles coach Doug Pederson said today that Peters is one of several players who could move into the left tackle spot.

“Jason Peters is obviously in the conversation,” Pederson said. “We do have some young players, Jordan Mailata, Matt Pryor. Jack Driscoll, who’s a [fourth-round] rookie, obviously, but has been playing some tackle for us.”
Those three young players have yet to prove they’re capable of handling the left tackle job. Peters can do it. The question is whether he’s willing to do it if the Eagles don’t show him the money.

We’ve seen where QB indecision leads a few times with OB. I’d guess Trubiski is nearing the end of the road as a starter.

The Minnesota Vikings have acquired Ngakoue from the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2021 second-round pick and a conditional fifth-round pick in 2022, sources tell NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Looks like Ngakoue is a Jag, but the trade may be creating financial and organizational chaos that the Jags may not have totally thought through.

Yannick Ngakoue trade raises more questions about Danielle Hunter
August 30, 2020, 8:19 AM EDT

Some have wondered aloud whether Vikings defensive end Danielle Hunter‘s extended absence from practice represents, at its core, an effort by Hunter to get more money from the team. If there’s anything to it, the team’s stunning decision to trade for defensive end Yannick Ngakoue definitely won’t resolve those concerns.

Ngakoue will make $17.88 million this year, if he signs his franchise tender and the trade that will send him to Minnesota goes through. Hunter, who had $8 million in salary converted to a restructuring bonus earlier this year, will make another $3.4 million in salary. That’s a total 2020 payout to $11.4 million; more than $6 million less than Ngakoue and nearly $16 million less than the new-money average paid out by the Chargers to defensive end Joey Bosa.

In all, Hunter’s deal averages $14.4 million per year. He’s signed through 2024.

The other possibility is that the “tweak” (as described by Vikings coach Mike Zimmer) is actually something more than that, and that Ngakoue could become not a complement but a replacement for Hunter this season. However, Courtney Cronin of ESPN.com reports that Hunter will be back on the field “soon.”

There’s also, in theory, a chance that the Vikings have acquired Ngakoue as a precursor to trading Hunter. That would trigger a cap charge of $5 million in 2020, with another $12 million in 2021. Given that the cap is expected to drop next year, that’s a significant chunk of dead money to absorb at a time when the cost of making Ngakoue anything other than a one-year rental would jump to $21.34 million.

Does Minn think they can flip Hunter for more than they gave for Yannick? I considered Yannick to Vikings but couldn't see why they would do it. Will be interesting if they keep both. Wish my guy DT James Lynch would become available.

Martinas Rankin's knee has left him on PUP/active in TC............He is likely to be placed on PUP/reserve prior to the Chief's game with the Texans week 1.

Newly-acquired Colts TE Trey Burton was carted off the field a couple of days ago. A calf injury is reported. From what I am hearing, his injury is a grade II calf tear. He is likely out for at least 3 weeks, up to 6, and will be a significant risk for recurrent calf injury or other compensatory lower extremity injury during the remainder of the season.

Meanwhile, the Colts long-standing go-to TE has sustained a significant neck stinger and will need to be careful upon his return for the season.

They would be a force...Hunter though has been mysteriously missing from the last 11 practices.
Hunter had a hamstring issue at the beginning of last season. Though he didn't miss any practices or games. I would tend to believe that he is dealing with a similar issue now, but a more prolonged precautionary rest is not all that problematic to his beginning the 2020 season. If he is not practicing within the next week, I would suspect that he has suffered more than a "tweak."

Two eagles have come up with injuries. Wentz has suffered a "lower body soft tissue" injury. That's all the information given. He came back slowly from an ACL/LCL he suffered early Dec 2017. Then he suffered a stress fracture of his back in Dec 2018.

Chargers ProBowl safety Derwin James sustained what appeared to be a hamstring injury to his right leg in a scrimmage today. However, it has turned out to be a meniscus tear. In Sept 2016, James sustained a left meniscus tear and lost the entire season when he opted for a meniscus repair instead of trim. Depending which route of treatment is chosen, he will lose at least a 4-6 weeks for a trim......... to several months for a repair. If he is career-smart, he will opt for the repair.

When Clowney left Houston there was ample discussion on him or his agent being able to discuss or negotiate extension or any type contract with his team or any other after a certain date. He went to Seattle for that season.
Is there a difference that allowed Yannick to discuss lowering his base GTD salary from $18 m to apprx four mill less?

Clowney had already signed his tender

Wow that's a stunner ! On the other hand we all know it's been an up and down, mostly down NFL career for Fournette at Jacksonville.
This guy was a top 5 pick coming out and "on paper" with his size and speed looked to be a a natural.
Released him outright, no trade ?
I dunno could we use him ?

Yeah this is a shocker indeed.

Yes we could use him but we’re set at running back. Well hopefully lol

Check it out:
From 2012-2017 the Jags draft in the top 5 each year: WR Justin Blackmon, OT Luke Joeckel, QB Blake Bortles, DE Dante Fowler, Jr., CB Jalen Ramsey and then RB Leonard Fournette.
None of those Draft picks are on the team any longer today.

Yes...the Texans could use Fournette. He was in a system that didn’t work for him. OB’s system is suited to power runners and having speed is a plus. Fournette could be a nice inexpensive insurance policy for David Johnson.

Fournette was allowed to be cut by O'Brien's best friend. Think O'Brien will get a ringing endorsement on Fournette? Not a chance.

Derwin James needs surgery, which will keep him out 6-8 months
Posted by Charean Williams on August 31, 2020, 8:17 PM EDT

Chargers coach Anthony Lynn struck a somber tone when talking about Derwin James‘ right knee injury Monday morning. It foreshadowed Monday evening’s news.

James will miss the season, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reports.

The All-Pro will require surgery on his meniscus and the full repair will keep James out six to eight months, per Rapoport. The Chargers were hoping James could get by with a meniscus trim, which would have sidelined him four weeks or so. But James has not had much injury luck.

*******************************************************
The new report says 6-8 months for return to play. This tells me that this is not only a meniscus repair which would only require ~3-4 months of rehab. With the new timeline, it seems apparent to me that James is going to be undergoing microfracture surgery, which would not be surprising with his history of knee damage.

As a sophomore at Florida State in 2016, James played only two games while dealing with a torn meniscus and cartilage damage in his knee.

The Jags offense was a RB focused offense b/c they just didn’t have a QB that could move the focus away from LF. Watson could make him a beast while teaming him with Johnson&Johnson. I still view both J&J as 3rd backs versus 3 down backs. If LF could be signed at the right price......bottom line, the Texans wouldn’t have any RB rated higher than a LF behind J&J.

OB won’t kick the tires but another NFL team will....just depends on who.

Going for the obvious tank job.
No, the Jaguars aren’t tanking
September 1, 2020, 1:07 PM EDT

Every year, one or more teams will be pegged as potentially positioning themselves to be so bad that it ultimately will be good. This year, the Jaguars definitely are not one of those teams.

As coach Doug Marrone explained it on Monday, if the team stinks, he’ll be fired. Ditto for G.M. Dave Caldwell. Indeed, they both almost ended up out the door after the 2019 season. It’s possible that the promise and potential of sixth-round rookie Gardner Minshew last year prompted owner Shad Khan to give Marrone and Caldwell a year to show what they could do with Minshew as the Week One starter.

The latest spike in scuttlebutt regarding a potential tank job happened when the team waived running back Leonard Fournette on Monday, a move that was a long time coming. The trade that sent defensive end Yannick Ngakoue to Minnesota also isn’t evidence of tanking; Ngakoue didn’t want to play for the Jaguars, and Jacksonville got a second-round pick and another selection that could increase from a fifth-rounder to a third-rounder.

Although few have much faith in the current roster (not getting a public look in the preseason and first-rounders like cornerback C.J. Henderson and defensive end/linebacker K’Lavon Chaisson helps keep any buzz under control), the Jaguars are trying to win. More specifically, they’re trying to make chicken salad in the aftermath of three failed seasons of Tom Coughlin serving as executive V.P. of football operations.

Amazingly, few of the voices publicly dumping on the dysfunction in Jacksonville have mentioned the reality that, without Coughlin there, things could instantly improve. Ramsey wanted out after a post-game interaction with Coughlin
