NFL Random Thought of the Day

New England just this morning has lost starting RT Marcus Cannon and starting LB Dont'a Hightower to Covid 2020 opt-outs. Yikes.
Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that LB Dont'a Hightower will not be suiting up this year (wife just delivered this month). He joins OT Marcus Cannon, FB Danny Vitale and OG Najee Toran as Patriots players who have opted not to play amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Add Patrick Chung to the list..

Gotta be only a matter of time until one (some) of our own bows out, ya..?

There's no way to prove this to MW.

Even if he did this at the combine, there would be somekind of supposed rolling start/clock malfunction etc... You're wasting your time. I'm just glad to see that T.O. seems to be doing well. He was a candidate for a hard life after retirement.

Actually......there is. Open the video, go full screen. Use an actual stop watch, a stop watch app on iPhone, and stop watch on digital watch....oh, that's what I did out of curiousity. I got 00:04.46, 00:04.47, and 00:04.46 on my efforts. Anyone else who cares to give it a try should.

So a fuss over a 46 YOA who has not played NFL for how many years? Some of you just turn over rocks and lift moss off tree trunks to find something to argue about.

No we don't! Yes we do !

As a 2017 rookie, Vanderdoes started 13 games for the Raiders, recording 12 pressures and 10 hurries. But after a promising rookie season, Vanderdoes missed all of the 2018 season after tearing his ACL in the final game of the 2017 season. Last year, he saw only limited action with the Texans in 3 games. He was expected to get significant DT time this season.

I guess you could label him Eddie Vanderdoesnot for 2020.

So 8 games for AB..

I don't feel like swimming through all of his drama to gage the fairness of that penalty, but just from memory it sounds about right, idk.

His twitter should be pretty fun.

Antonio Brown gets an eight-game suspension
July 31, 2020, 2:50 PM EDT

Free-agent receiver Antonio Brown already has served an unofficial 14-game suspension, thanks to the refusal of teams to sign him which the NFL conducted multiple investigations that, if he were employed, could have landed him on the league’s paid-leave list. Per multiple reports (confirmed by PFT), he’ll now serve another eight-game suspension.

The reports initially conflicted on whether the eight-game suspension can be served without Brown being signed. Some say the clock doesn’t start until he’s on a team. The NFL’s usual approach is to give the guy credit for each week of a suspension, even if he remains unsigned.

NFL Media (which is, as a practical matter, the NFL) reports that the eight-game suspension begins to run in Week One, regardless of whether Brown is on a team. The NFL has confirmed to PFT that, indeed, the suspension will last through Week Eight (if not signed) or his team’s eighth game (if signed).

The eight-game suspension, per NFL Media, covers two of three pending items against Brown: An accusation that Brown harassed via text message a woman who went public with concerns about Brown’s behavior to SI.com, and an arrest (followed by a no-contest plea) on felony and misdemeanor charges from earlier this year, after an altercation with the driver of a moving truck.
THE REST OF THE STORY

OT Russell Okung did not opt out of this season, but is seriously considering retirement. Back in June of last year, he suffered a near death experience when he experienced blood clots in his left leg which resulted in them traveling to both of his lungs (pulmonary emboli). He was admitted to the ICU and placed on blood thinners for months. He is certainly considered a high risk for the COVID-19 virus. The wise thing would have been to opt out or retire at his first opportunity, especially since he has a 1 year old baby to think of.

Is anyone going to sign Antonio Brown?

There’s a lot of amnesia when it comes to Brown. When the eight-game suspension for Brown was announced, the talk started about how he’d fit well with various teams. That seems to ignore that he went AWOL on the Pittsburgh Steelers at the end of the 2018 season, forced the Buffalo Bills to nix a trade, created a lifetime’s worth of headaches for the Oakland Raiders and only lasted one game before more bad behavior caused the New England Patriots to cut him. That all happened in about nine months’ time.

Yet, people think Brown isn’t going to be a problem for his next team?

NFL Owners/GM's are a fickle group. Wait until his 8 game suspension is completed and if any team with a real playoff chance is needing a receiving weapon for the stretch.....Brown will say he's a changed man and the GM will be convincing the owner that he's worthy of a second, third, or fourth chance. Maybe everything works out or maybe it goes the way of Josh Gordon. Brown is still a talented receiver but he's going to have to decide how much he values an NFL paycheck.

CNN)NFL cornerback DeAndre Baker was charged with four counts of robbery with a firearm stemming from an alleged incident in south Florida this spring.
Baker, 22, is a cornerback for the New York Giants.
He's accused of stealing cash and watches from four men at a house party in Miramar, Florida, in May, according to a statement from the Broward State Attorney's Office.
At the time of the alleged incident, witnesses said he robbed the men at gunpoint.
If convicted, Baker faces a minimum of 10 years in prison.

The Jacksonville Jaguars had opted to carry 90 players on the active roster for the early stages of TC. They have now reduced to 80 players more than a week before the deadline for doing so.

TY Hilton, one of the Texans' greatest nemeses, re-injured his calf in the offseason and is presently on the Non Football Injury list. Last season, Hilton lost 6 games to a hamstring injury...........he refused to go on IR, despite the fact that he had a severe 3cm tear of his hamstring. This is his contract season and re-tearing of his hamstring is not a great start.

What would a legit rehab time frame look like?

Another TE with a deserved contract extension. Ian Rapoport has just reported that Travis Kelce and the Chiefs have agreed on a 4-year $57 million extension.........with 2 years still left on his original 5-year contract, which will bring him $8 million in 2020 and $7.75 million in 2021. Kelce and Mahomes will be best buds for awhile.

The Seattle Seahawks waived rookie cornerback Kemah Siverand earlier this week after he was caught on video trying to sneak a woman into the team's hotel, a source confirmed to ESPN.
The NFL Network first reported the circumstances of Siverand's release, noting that the woman was wearing Seahawks gear in an attempt to disguise herself as a player.

If the season goes deep, you can expect lots of on-the-side sneak bypassing of the "safe COVID" practices.

Lamar Miller may be the Patriot's premier starting RB this season. From I can gather, Sony Michel underwent a "minor" foot surgery in May, and his recovery is not going well. Any foot surgery for a RB is not "minor." There is a significant chance that Michel ends up on the PUP/reserve list for the beginning of the season.

With all the hefty contracts that are being passed around..........and all the revenue losses due to COVID-19, don't be surprised if in the 2021 season ticket prices take nice healthy turn upwards.

I really think Free Agency is going to be interesting next offseason .... With all these big contracts being inked and a significant drop in the cap looming , many teams are going to be at / over the cap to start the offseason and that's going to result in a whole lot of players who have little to no dead money being cut to satisfy the cap rules.
Teams who have some wiggle room will be able to pay pennies on the dollar for premium talents that those other teams cut while those teams are left signing players for the minimum to fill their rosters.

According to Spotrac's current cap numbers for 2021 , the Texans will be sellers being 21m above the projected cap.
Crazy to think that JJ Watt could be a cap casualty in 2021 as he has no dead money along with David Johnson and Brandin Cooks - making that deal for Hopkins appear even worse.

That is before any extension for Watson or WFV - Any extension for those two would make the Texans financial situation even worse.

Worse yet , two teams in the AFC South are currently in the top 5 in terms of available cap space with the Jaq's at #4 having $38.2m the Colts sitting at the top of the list with $79.9m in available cap space .... and Bill Belichick sitting at #2 with $57m to play with.

And that's not the end of it - iirc, Texans dont have a 1st or 2nd round pick in the next draft.

Cooks/DJ have very little dead money in 2021 and can be cut for cap savings, or sign a renegotiated more cap friendly deal.

Veteran OL Spencer Long was just signed by the 49ers...............and has just announced that he has decided to retire. it is reported that the reason is not known. But the decision for his retirement is because he has had ongoing significant problems ever since his past multiple major knee injuries/surgeries.

Sure , they could rework their deals .... but the point is that a lot of players are going to get less next year because of Covid - The only players immune to being cap casualties are stars playing in their primes and guys like Mercilus who have a ton of dead money.

Cooks has no dead money and a $12m salary - that zero dead money makes him a prime candidate to become a cap casualty or rework.

Johnson has 2.1m in dead money on a 9m deal. 6.9m in cap savings and easily replaceable for a fraction of that.

Mercilus has 15.15m in dead money but is due only 10.5m .... not a candidate.

Tough break for the young man. He apparently has a growing aortic aneurysm..........something that carries with it high risk of sudden death, and in general an 80% mortality. It is associated with high blood pressure and aortic valve issues. Surgery from aortic aneurysm is not an easy recovery and often times involves aortic valve replacement which is an equally difficult surgery. While he waits for the 5.5 cm surgical criteria [3.5 cms is considered normal, and >4.5 is considered enlarged], he will need to lose substantial weight, control his cholesterol and blood pressure. He will need to also stay away from anything that causes a high spike in blood pressure [which could cause an acute dissection or rupture of his aneurysm] as would football or heavy weight lifting or highly animated arguments with his girlfriend.

Retirement was the only intelligent decision. Prayers to him.
