NFL Random Thought of the Day

Al Michaels: I enjoyed him calling baseball games as a kid. He just has a baseball voice to me. I always thought it was awkward when I tried to embrace him as an NFL voice. Not that he's a bad NFL announcer but it always felt strange to me.

Same thing with Marv Albert: The guy is an NBA announcing legend (in the basketball Hall of Fame) and has some of the best NBA phrases of all time. And he started calling NFL games for CBS from 2011 to 2014: He called quite a few of the Houston Texans games during that time. It was way too weird and awkward. LOL

When the browns scored their last TD in regulation I was screaming for Hue to go for 2 to put them up by 9. I understand the percentages give you a slight advantage being up by 8 instead of 7, but going up by 2 scores there puts that game out of reach. I was really hoping to see Brownies get win #2

Man the Refs took that game from the Browns. How do they miss the 1st down?

How the hell did they move the ball back on a play where bodies are all over the place? Refs screwed them over big time...plus it was a first down! Browns have legit beef today IMO.

I was eating dinner at the time so the TV was far away I couldn't see or hear it very well. I take it it wasn't clear enough to take the first down away, but they did anyways?

Idk I still don't like being conservative after that TD, just feels like something OB would due, play for a tie instead of going for the kill. If you don't get it your still up by 7, just seemed like a no lose situation to me

I can’t help but think that we are seeing better QBs because of the rule changes on hitting QBs.

I think it is more coaching decision. Teams used to be more run oriented. 3rd & 3 was a 75% of the time rushing play. Now it's 90% passing. Aikman averaged 28 passing attempts per game. Brees is 37.5, Brady 35. Short passing is being used much more and those are quick plays where the QBs are rarely hit.

Few people dislike Keenum the player more than I do. He’s always thrown a great deep ball. Those rainbows are very catchable.

Patrick Mahomes is a BEAST. I think he's going to be the best QB out of his class.

Not only is he accurate that damn arm of his is unwordly. He can move too.

Yeah... more than a few wanted him... but RS was just a smidgen late

He was meh for much of the night, but damn he did make some amazing plays tonight. ESPN kept calling him SHOWTIME and that was annoying as hell tho

His body was not just a smidge over the first down marker.....it was half way across the line. They blew the spot and cost the Browns a win in the process.

Just think what O’Brien could do with Mahomes......

Oh wait.

The strict pass interference rules have made an impact too.

I remember the rules changed a lot after a Colts - Patriots showdown in the playoffs.

How much better do you think Irvin and Aikman would be today?

Also in the Chiefs game last night. Chiefs had 3rd and 7 with 2:04 left in the game. Critical play of the game. They completed a big first down pass and ended up scoring a TD to win the game.

Mahomes clearly snapped the ball at least two seconds after the play clock hit 0. It wasn't even close... I still don't know how the referees didn't see that and call delay of game. If you want to debate the snap was 1 or 1.5 seconds late, and not a full 2 seconds, then so be it. It was still after the play clock already showed 0.

It really sucks when the zebras dictate the games like that.

Can the Browns and Broncos protest those games?
It's not like baseball is it? Where they can protest immediately after.
They can do the same in the NBA as well. I'm not sure the NFL rules.

NFL Live on ESPN right now. They're also upset with the missed delay of game.

I think that call should be challengeable, just like to many men on the field is. Watson also got away with one on Sunday however.

The NFL explained the mechanics of the rule, not because of our game, due to the Browns game.

The back judge watches the clock until it hits zero. They then swivel to view to center and if he is in the act of hiking there will be no flag. So there is a little lag built into the system.

The Dallas Cowboys need a new head coach badly.

Jason Garrett has one playoff win!
And even that game I thought the Lions were robbed.

Wade Phillips went 13-3 for the Dallas Cowboys in 2007.
And even he was canned three years later.

Jason Garrett had his brief moment of success.
Now it's back to mediocrity. He's been there too long!

The loser of the Texans vs. Cowboys game on Sunday Night. The head coach should be fired live on camera after the game. Whether it's Jason Garrett or Bill O'Brien. LOL

Rigged

No. Fans not understanding mechanically how the rule is enforced.
That's a cop out and BS excuse according to Stephen A. Smith on his radio show. Clearly they need to change the entire definition if it happens more often. Even the village idiot could see that the ball was snapped past one second after the play clock hit 0. I had counted 1.5 to 2 seconds even if you want to go by the BS one second mechanic.

Broncos players and coaches were noticeably upset after the game...
Why would they be so upset if that play wasn't so poorly officiated?

So don't blame this on the fans not understanding the situation!
I'm going by the players, coaches and even the media being upset.

Stephen A. Smith is a shock jock dumbass.

It rarely happens and almost all fall within the explanation.

Other commentators have reviewed the play and said it's arguable whether the ball was in play within the natural delay. But I guess they didn't have the benefit of your penchant for hyperbole or steelb's tin foil hat. Or hey, maybe the back judge was slow but it had nothing to do with rigging games.

Would you swap them straight up, Garrett for OB?

That's a tough one. Jason Garrett has a calm personality that may mesh with Deshaun Watson. I admire Garrett's history as a player and coach, mostly as an exciting offensive coordinator under Wade Phillips. Garrett's wealth of football knowledge is undeniable. He may actually have a diverse selection of offensive plays that can better utilize Deshaun Watson.

Not to say that Bill O'Brien isn't a good playcaller, but he's not aggressive enough and ends up using the same boring and bland plays in the fourth quarter even if we build a big lead. Too conservative for my liking. I understand why Cal McNair was upset with O'Brien after that overtime win. The way O'Brien coached the fourth quarter nearly cost us the game.

But let's be honest, the mediocre offensive line may be to blame for O'Brien dumbing down the playbook this season. But I saw it open more a little more with Davenport benched. Let's hope our offensive line can continue to show improvement. In Kendall Lamm I trust.

Sorry, but got a verifiable link for the bolded?

Nope, you will never win a SB with Garrett as HC. I couldn't see him coming here due to the fact he would have to remove his nose from Jerrah's a**.

Right now we would not swap OB for Garret or Reich. Guess that makes him not the worst coach in the league lol. I also would not swap him for Hugh Jackson so bam, he has a little wiggle room. FML, this is sad. I was randomly thinking which HC we could swap with that would improve both teams; tough sledding.

Per PFT:
One of the key plays in the Titans’ comeback win over the Eagles on Sunday was a strip-sack of Philadelphia quarterback Carson Wentz, but the former head of NFL officiating Dean Blandino says that play should have been called back because of a blow to Wentz’s head.

This is another example of why nobody should ever bet on the NFL.

Colts lose several players after starting with 44 dressed out
Posted by Charean Williams on October 4, 2018, 9:33 PM EDT

The Colts listed seven players as out in their Wednesday status report. That was their inactive list. But they dressed only 44 players, with linebacker Darius Leonard and cornerback Nate Hairston active but not dressed.

Since the game started, the Colts have kept their medical staff busy.

Safety Clayton Geathers was injured after Patriots running back Sony Michel lowered his helmet into Geathers. Geathers cleared concussion protocol but is questionable to return with a neck injury.

Tight end Eric Ebron had trainers working on him on the bench, but there is no word on his injury.

Defensive tackle Margus Hunt headed to the locker room in the second quarter with a knee injury. He is questionable to return.

Linebacker Anthony Walker is out with a concussion.

Congrats to Tom Brady: 500 career TD passes.
Gronk is a healthy beast again. Josh Gordon is legit.
Julian Edelman is back. The Pats have dangerous weapons!

Super Bowl: Patriots versus Rams. I mean jeez.
Both offenses look like they can be on another level.

The Texans offense could be pretty special one day also.
We need a couple major upgrades on the offensive line.
I love our speed and playmakers at the skill positions.
Keke Coutee, man this guy excites the hell out of me!

Patriots running back Sony Michel lowered his helmet into Geathers.
Should have been a penalty. Just like the hit Patterson laid on Johnson in the opener that knocked him stone cold out. He intentionally lowered his helmet into Johnson who was already targeting Patterson around the knees. No calls on either play.

Eh I've seen tons of offensive players commit this penalty this year, and I haven't seen it called once. I don't think this is special treatment for the Patriots, I think it's special treatment for offenses because offense makes money

If it's going to be a penalty for the D it needs to be a penalty for the O. That hit Patterson put on Johnson may have been Johnsons ticket out of the NFL.

There is always special treatment for the Patriots.

I agree it should be it has been consistently not called across the league this year after the NFL said it was a point of emphasis, actually I think I read somewhere that calls on the rule are down across the board including calls against defenders. But again this play happens numerous times a game from an offensive player and I have yet to seen it called on any team, so I don't think in this instance you can point and say Patriot favoritism.

Whatever your choice of smoke is, it worked!!! This is a great re-alignment. I would love for the Texans and Cowboys to play twice a year. That would become an amazing rivalry. Also, there's solid teams in each Division.

The only problem, and it's a big one, that I see with this is that it makes WAY too much sense.
