NFL Random Thought of the Day

Long snappers are going to be protected with much more emphasis by the refs. Refs will be looking for any hits to the head or neck of long snappers, as they are considered "defenseless players." Expect more penalties. The sudden emphasis is strange since I am not aware of more than 2 concussions to long snappers since 2012. Most injuries to these players have been elbow, hand, knee, back, and lower extremity soft tissue injuries (hamstrings in particular).

The Coleman trade is pretty simple. The Browns got compensation for a guy they were going to cut anyway.

He was a one-trick pony with poor hands coming out of a high school offense where he only learned how to run two routes.

He's only been in the league for a blink but he hasn't yet shown any growth as a route runner. Everybody in the NFL is fast. You can't just run go routes every play like he did in college.

He was drafted by a GM that has already been fired. The new GM is not tied to him and so isn't forced to keep him around if he obviously isn't good enough to make the roster.

Before I read the GREG HARDY WINS ANOTHER FIGHT BY FIRST-ROUND KNOCKOUT, I thought he scored another victory over a girlfriend.........but then found out it referred to a UFC fight. :cute:

Looks like Panthers' RT Daryl Williams is going to try to rehab his MCL/patellar dislocation and essentially limp through this season trying to avoid the inevitable. Don't believe a very wise decision. It didn't work out very well with the Redskins' OT Trent Williams who tried the same last season with predictable results.......poor performance and offseason Jan knee surgery.

Daryl Williams is going to be put on IR, and is determined to conservatively rehab his injuries.......then come back later this season..............a big mistake in that the MPFL (medial patellar femoral ligament) he tore when his patella was dislocated has no chance of fully healing and leaving him fully functional. Expect this Williams to fare no better than the other Williams. If he were smart, he would trade off a poor 2018 season for a fresh start in 2019.

Players should get their money. Their window of opportunity is so small and there's always someone gunning for your spot.

Raiders want Pro Bowl LT Donald Penn to take pay cut
http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/24323389/oakland-raiders-want-donald-penn-take-pay-cut

Penn returned and received his two-year, $21 million extension in between Weeks 1 and 2 of the regular season. His string of 170 straight regular-season starts, a stretch that dated back to 2007, came to an end in Week 16 when he suffered the foot injury against the Dallas Cowboys.

There is no sense yet that Penn might be cut if he does not agree to the pay cut -- he carries a salary-cap number of more than $8.38 million this season -- though it was obvious he was not happy the story was "leaked" to the media.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal first reported the development.

Penn, 35, is due base salaries of $6 million in each of the next two seasons but, according to ESPN Stats & Information, $3 million is fully guaranteed for 2018, with a roster bonus of $109,375 per game on the 46-man active roster. He can also get a $300,000 workout bonus based on six weigh-ins, with $50,000 per weigh-in.

The Raiders used their first-round pick this spring on UCLA left tackle Kolton Miller, drafting him 15th overall, and he has been the starter all offseason with Penn on the mend.

Why does the NFL keep playing a four-week preseason?
August 9, 2018, 2:45 PM EDT

August brings 65 games of meaningless football. It also may bring commentary from the Commissioner about the possibility of shrinking the amount of meaningless football played in August.

It’s a topic that comes up during the preseason, with Roger Goodell often musing about teams being ready for the games that count with fewer games that don’t.

“I’ve asked every football guy, ‘How many preseason games do we really need to prepare your team and develop players and evaluate players and get yourself ready for the season?” Goodell said last year. “And I think that has shifted dramatically in the last three years. I think that coaches and football people think that you could do this in three [games], and I actually think that’s better for the fans. I actually don’t think the preseason games are of the quality that I’m really proud of. From my standpoint, I think that would be a really healthy shift.”

Goodell raised the topic of shrinking the preseason three different times last August. Under the labor deal finalized seven Augusts ago, the league has the absolute right to cut the preseason in half, without bargaining with the NFL Players Association.

So why hasn’t the league done it? Despite what Goodell has said, the people who employ and pay him don’t want it. And they don’t want it because they don’t want to give up the easy revenue that comes with much lower expense than what they pay players during the regular season.

Go to a couple of Pre-Season games to indoctrinate the rookies and newcomers, then bump the regular season dress roster to 60 players. Bump the PS to 12 players. If players health is truly a priority, these simple changes should make sense.

One of those should be #14

Or maybe 15?
Thanks for the heads up, but Cain should have been #13...........and Guise should have been #14.

But so I don't disappoint you too much:

Redskins TE Manasseh Garner has suffered a torn ACL. He suffered a significant hyperextension of the same knee last season at LSU. Most likely this was a partial ACL tear for which he opted for conservative rehab, a decision in an NFL player which seldom ultimately results in avoiding surgery............ACL#15.

Busty Lynch is sucking for the Broncos tonight.

Inaccurate/afraid to pull the trigger on deeper routes etc...

Elway needs to cut his losses.

During the preseason game against the Chargers, Cardinals’ LB Jeremy Cash was carted off the field with the report of a noncharacterized "knee injury." Watching the play, I will not be surprised if his injury is later identified as an ACL..........and more. We'll have to wait and see what further information comes up.

Two days ago, Titans ex Texans OLB Gimel had the biggest defensive play of the game for the Titans in their preseason opener. He was waived injured, reclaimed and now has been placed on IR for a nonspecified injury.

Per MRI, Cardinals’ LB Jeremy Cash did indeed suffer a torn ACL......and MCL.............ACL #18.

I like how the NFL Network is re-airing every pre-season game. I'm currently watching the Broncos vs. Vikings game right now. I intentionally stay away from looking at the scores so I can enjoy all the NFL action and keep up with every team.

Unfortunately the NFL Network has a news ticker on the bottom of their screen that shows every score. I've glanced at it a couple times and already ruined a couple of potential games that I could have enjoyed. Oh well, at least I didn't see the Broncos vs. Vikings score so I can still watch this game.

With the Astros having a day off today, and also on Thursday, I had two days this week to watch 24-7 NFL games. I was hoping to catch every NFL preseason game.

Anyone else have Gamepass this year?

Tried watching through the updated app and none of the videos would work.

Trying on a high bandwidth connection tonight hopefully it works.

For a multi billion dollar enterprise, the NFL has to put more money into making sure this technology works better.

I've never got mine to work. I'm supposed to get it through the season ticket membership, it's never worked. I just got tired of trying.

I ended up with Carson Wentz in fantasy football. Does anybody know if he's going to start Week 1 or at all? The Eagles have a Super Bowl winning quarterback in Nick Foles that absolutely shined in the playoffs. They don't have a pressing need to go back to Wentz as soon as possible if he's not 100 %.

I'm trying to make a trade offer: Carson Wentz for Deshaun Watson. I'd rather have Watson all day over Wentz. I doubt the person with Deshaun will accept though.

There's no way I'd give you (or anyone) Watson for Wentz.
LoL

It's always worked fine for me until last year. Couldn't get it to work on anything. Haven't tried yet this year. It's been free for season ticket holders for a few years now and the promo code for the new season usually doesn't become available until right before the regular season starts IIRC.

Because it was free for me I didn't bother with the hassle of trying to get it resolved last year.

Watching the Falcons/Jets replay. Schaub still makes 3rd down throws short of the sticks.
:kubepalm:

Ever stream a MLB game? They are the gold standard. NBA is terrible, just terrible.

Bad day for concussions..............
