Next Head Coach

Does anyone remember play calling being this bad with Hoyer or Fitzpatrick? Or is Brock just special?
Don't remember play calling but there were other complaints, at least from me, I remember quite fondly. Namely, 'Shitpatrick', 'Hoyerable', and 'OB better find a ******* QB'. Times haven't changed much the past three years as a Texans fan.

With Brock's indecisiveness and accuracy, how do you judge play calling?

I cannot for the life of me understand why play calling is such a fallback position with the fanbase. It's just mind boggling.

Because every 2nd down outside of the end of the half or the 4th quarter is a run up the middle. Less than 10 slants called all season. No pass routes over 15 yards since week 4. No plays brought over from the NE offense.

And at least when Kubiak was predictable he still had an OLine that produced results.

From the BOB news conference a few minutes ago:

Bill O'Brien was asked about the speculation of a potential parting of the ways: 'I don't think about that. I don't address those things.'

a non-denial denial? Glazer just doesn't make stuff up, he's one of the most well connected journalist reporting on the NFL. Does BOB's agent leak news to Glazer in order to get BOB's name out there early and generate interest now?

As a Texan, Weeden came into a game and won it and then the following week started and won. As a Texan, the only thing which can be said of Weeden is that, at worst, he is an unknown and, at best, he is an unknown. Too bad, I'd like to see what he could do in this offense. Will he be willing to come back next year under the same circumstances as this year? Doubtful. I'd think he would want the opportunity to, at least, compete as the #2.

You're right for the most part. What gets me with play calling is when everybody on the planet knows what's coming. 2nd and 10 after an incompletion on 1st down is a run up the middle almost every single time. Change that shit up already.

I'm no x's and o's guy by any means, but when I can sit up in my 547 perch and impress the peeps around me by looking at their formation, calling the guy in motion before he goes in motion and where the play is going, there's a problem with play calling. Now, that's maybe just a handful of plays per game or so, if that much, but the point is, it's enough that if someone like me can recognize what's coming with the little that I know about x's and o's, I wouldn't think it's much of a problem at all for players and coaches.

Now, draws on 3rd and long, or why'd you call a screen there, or why throw short of the sticks, or why a fade on this down instead of that, or you should have run a QB sneak instead of quick hit with the FB and things like that where people complain about the play calling, I agree that that's nuts. It's when I know what's coming, watching it on tv or at the game, is the problem I have with it.

I'm not sure Bob would meddle with QBs and a coach .:spit: .

I wish I could like this a thousand times.

Thanks

Yes

Just like that he's gone.

What if they kill two birds with uno stone ? Promote Romeo to head coach and promote Vrabel to DC ?

Provided a genuine-offensive-genius-type coordinator was brought in to flush every bit of Bill O'Brien's bullshit "situational-football/game-plan offense out of these players minds and replace it with a system that actually exists and is known to be effective at the Pro level I'd be fine with it.

Is Romeo Crennel on my short list? Hell no he isn't! Do I think he was the reason Cleveland didn't put it together in his four years there? Not really, no. He also didn't get what I'd consider a chance to really fix anything in Kansas City before they dumped him. He was a 3 game interim coach and then only won 2 games the next year with Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn. Now honestly how many coaches do much better than that with Matt Cassel and Brady Quinn?

Interim coaches take over flawed teams. That's just how it works. There would have to be a real offensive wizard on the other side though. Only way that choice would be palatable to me.

Having said that he's almost 70. I don't think Crennel is going to be a HC again and he might not even want to do that. I bet he's more likely to retire completely than get a HC offer.

I'm in a quandrey here.I hate the idea of starting over with a new HC, but the offense has gotten worse after three years and OB is supposedly an offensive guru.
Baby Shanny is the only young, hotshot coordinator that really intrigues me. No way is Cowher or Gruden leaving TV, so who else is out there that can come in and make an immediate impact? Cue Jimbo Fisher from Texian in 3...2...1...

2.You know what struck me about these coach openings? There are no coaches everyone wants. If Stanford’s David Shaw were a candidate (he says he doesn’t want to leave college football right now), he’d likely get an NFL gig. Same with Nick Saban. I heard things Sunday night from teams like this: “There’s nobody out there who’s a slam-dunk guy.” … “We definitely don’t have a leader in the clubhouse.” … “Who do you really like?” (You know a team’s in trouble when it’s asking a sportswriter’s opinion.) … And this: “There’s no one out there we love.” … You know why all that is good? Maybe teams will take their time—Jed York indicated to me he’ll be slow and wide-ranging with his two job searches, which he should be—and not rush the way most teams do every January. Teams will do their homework on Shanahan and New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, as well as Joseph, Lynn, Payton, Dallas offensive coordinator Scott Linehan and other NFL assistants. But the fact is, there’s not a must-have in the market this year.

Yeah Speedy that's unheard of especially when most of us truly thought we would have this explosive offense. hahaha we suppose to be the new age show on turf.

wow is all I have to say about that.

EXACTLY! I'm not one for changing for the sake of change. I want a plan in place, not knee jerk reactions. I also like continuity. The engineer in me comes out in these moments.

Can you engineer us a better scoring offense? 23 TD's in 16 games, 13 down from last season, and a -500 decrease in yardage. Yeah bud that's what we would consider knee jerkiness. haha

Not a fan of screwing around with the defense. That's the side of the ball that's working.
I could see Shanahan coming here as head coach. Kubiak/McNair basically put him in the national eye when they promoted him to his first OC job.

I also like it that he quit that job in Cleveland when the owner butted in and insisted Johnny Manziel be their starter.

....which kinda says he might not come here to work for Meddling McNair
sh!t!

Harbaugh won't be leaving Michigan for at least 2 more years and possibly through the end of his contract. I do think he will go back to the NFL at some point but that window starts 3-5 years from now. All the rumor mongering over him leaving is just reporters trying to be 'first'. There's no substance to it right now.

Agree! ^^^^^^

I was just going to say the same thing. He aint coming here...he knows the front office screw with the QB position. Keeping Carr and Now this Osweiler thing. pfft. I wouldn't want to work here either.

I like McCoy.

I wouldn't think it's going backwards. O'b definitely had some advantages.

I like how McCoy was able to take what Peyton was good at & create an offense to work with him... helped Peyton to a record season. Freak'n Peyton Manning & helped him be better. Then I like how he helped resurrect Philip Rivers, at least for a little while.

I wanted him back in 2013, but we were still on a Kubiak high.

I think the Texans want to go all in on Brock. I don't think O'b is on board. Unless something changes over the next three weeks, I think that's going to be the main reason behind O'b & the Texans parting ways.

I don't think Savage has a concussion. I think Rick bigdck'd O'b.

It sounds to me like McCoy is one of those guys that is a good coordinator but not so much HC. If the Texans wanted to hire him as OC to help Savage/Brock and the Offense I'm all in. But HC, no thanks!

Coach says he doesn't know right now which quarterback will start against the Raiders. Sounds like he has to wait and see what Rick Smith and Mcnair have to say about it first. Im beginning to think there are some very serious issues going on between Obrien and someone in the front office. Sounds like he has wore out his welcome and is about ready to move on.

I think people are reading too much into this. Why tell OAK which QB they need to prepare for until the last minute. Make them watch film on both guys. This fits with the NE model BOB came from, never give any info unless you HAVE to.

wow is all I have to say about that.

It's all about expectations, Badly needed speed was added, but I didn't expect that much due to Martin being out for the yr and Brown not being able to make it back from injury. (I was wrong on that one) But if you took 3 starters (2 out for the yr Martin/Newton) (Allen has had a calf injury that has lead to his suckage) off of the Cowboys Ol their offense would struggle and the Texans don't have as much OL depth as the Cowboys have.

So if you look at it like that, then no I didn't expect a high powered offense. I hoped for an avg offense and Os killed those hopes with his accuracy issues. How they made the playoffs with 3 starters hurt and Os suckage is truly amazing and there's no way that could've happened without a good coaching job. Which included running the ball a lot to keep the defense fresh and the clock running shortening the game. BOB knew his team would get blown out with Os throwing the ball 40/50 times a game.

Harbaugh would never work for an owner like McNair/Smith butting in o personnel decisions. Neither would Saban/Fisher, they've got great college gigs and will only come back to the NFL under their own terms. (Never happen in a McNair org.)

Did they fall asleep like I have so many times this yr watching Os tape? Or did the piss their pants from laughing so hard?

This is a good breakdown of the how and why we got ugly, boring football. It also why I think O'Brien might be a better coach than i think he is.

So Romeo gets screwed for doing a good job, being able to work with Rick and producing the #1 defense in the league regardless of player availability?

I disagree. I think Romeo should at least be asked if he wants to be a HC.

He's worked here before. I'm sure he knows if he's doing his job he doesn't have to worry about meddling owners. He also knows that the McNairs, including Rick, are willing to help him work through issues... instead of just getting the ax.

I don't really understand. We're always insisting these guys be held accountable, but once they're called to the carpet, we byotch about a "meddling" owner.

As I said, I'm just not a big fan of messing with what works. And our defense works.
But I hear where you're coming from and maybe he should be interviewed. He would definitely know what he's getting into. I would hope, if he gets elevated to head coach (this is all "what if" anyway) that he keeps involved in the defense. Vrabel has done a good job getting the best out of the LB corps but I'm not sure he's ready to be responsible for the defensive game plan and to call defensive plays.
Maybe he is.

I'm sure K.Shanahan would have some idea regarding how things worked when Kubiak was coach. Just not sure he'd sign on for what front office operations seem to have evolved into these days.

And I'm not sure what you mean by that last sentence.

If Patricia gets a HC gig, be rest assured Vrabel will be the next DC in Foxboro

If word gets out that McNair/Smith undercut BOB, no HC that's really good will want to come here. Example Shanny/Saban/Fisher/Harbaugh wont have anything to do with a Texans org structured the way it's currently structured.

Word on the street is BOB wanted to bring in Robinson from the Pats as GM and kick Smith upstairs. McNair vetoed that idea, which lead to the current rift, that was made even worse by the McNair/Smith signing of Os.

I cant divulge who I heard this from. It's 2nd hand knowledge but this person has been right on other things Texans related. Kubiak being kept and Wade being hired for instance.

Patricia has been with the Patriots since 2004. he's been an offensive assistant, offensive line assistant, linebackers coach, & safeties position coach.

I think Belichick has a system that works for him. I can't see him brining the Texans LB coach over to be his DC.

Vrabel isnt your average LB coach. Go listen to ted Johnson, Teddy Bruschi or Willie McGinnest who all played LB with vrabel on the Pats. They all said he was a coach on the field and they all knew he would have great success when he retired as a player. As much as we think Bill doesnt have ties he does respect great players and I could see him making that call rather quick

Except Belichick has a habit of promoting from within. when was the last time he brought someone in as a coordinator?

O'brien coached for twenty years before going to the Patriots as an assistant, starting at the bottom.

Great breakdown steelbtexan

Now here is the counter to that. Ronnie Crennel's defense is dealing with even more key injuries. But he has managed to not only survive without the best defensive lineman on the planet, he has them at the number one defense in the NFL.

I understand Brock's inconsistencies and the injuries to key linemen. But honestly I believe O'Brien could've maximize this situation much better than this. I mean he took a very inconsistent turnover waiting to happened Fitzpatrick better known as Fitztragic and turned him to a very serviceable QB. (Remember his numbers we're his best ever as a Pro). Then he took a very timid Hoyer who I've said on many of occasions withers against stout defense and made him into a serviceable QB. So why couldn't he do that with Brock? Let's look at the play calling from back then to now. Steel it's totally different. We are not seeing a lot of crossing routes to get these receivers open, not enough screens passes, not getting the QB on the move to buy him some more time, and most definitely not enough attacking the seems and middle of the field. In the last 2 years we were doing all of that. And man what's up with his play calling in the red zone. ATROCIOUS!

Except Belichick has a habit of promoting from within. when was the last time he brought someone in as a coordinator?

O'brien coached for twenty years before going to the Patriots as an assistant, starting at the bottom.

My guess is that he wouldn't bring Vrabel in as a coordinator. He'd be more likely to bring Crennel back as DC who would then bring Vrabel back with him to then rise up to his spot once he retired.

Vrabel knows the Belichick system.

I'm not denying that. Just saying I'd be surprised if Belichick brings Vrabel in as defensive coordinator. If Vrabel is brought in, it would probably be as a position coach, something other than LBs & maybe even offense. Belichick would make sure he's well rounded, exposed to more than one position group before making him a DC.

We probably wouldn't. We'd probably promote him straight to HC. But Belichick doesn't work that way.

I could care less how the power structure is in regards to the drafting of players or singing of free agents. The fact is that BO'b mismanaged the offense almost all season. While the quarterbacks have their issues those issues stood no chance at getting better as long as the offense was called as it has been almost all season.

I don't expect any drastic changes in regards to our quarterbacks issues at this point, even if BO'b does more of what was working against the Titans next week against the Raiders.

Still if BO'b does allow for the right adjustment I do see us having a better offense overall. However BO'b seems inflexable and I see him being more like he has been most of the season than he was in a few games this season. If the offense goes back to the same predictable vanilla nonsense in the playoff game it will spell doom for us no matter who the Raiders Qb is.

Our unprductive offense would ensure our defense would ware down as the game goes on spelling doom for the team.

I think we should go ahead and just start calling him "Rick McNair" because "Rick with his nose three feet up Bob's ass" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

That's a good post, and if there's anything to these rumors flying around, it won't be the case of O'Brien getting fired, it will be that he's gone somewhere else to a multitude of teams that would roll out the red carpet for him. Making the playoffs is not an easy thing to do, and the fact that they did so the last two years in a row, is remarkable, considering the seemingly never-ending QB questions.

Here's the thing that should stand out. The fanbase, being what they are, will certainly find it convenient to hold O'Brien accountable for Oz turning out to be such a colossal failure. The rest of the NFL will only see O'Brien doing the best he could playing the hand with the cards he was dealt.

If he leaves, it will be our loss.

All this "meddling owner" nonsense is just something that's been thrown against the wall so many times, that it's actually sticking to some. There's absolutely no validity to it whatsoever, just baseless assumptions blurted out as facts.

Spot on with your assessment of Bill O'Brien's play calling. I know he can do a much better job than this because in the last two previous years, he made it work with what he had at those times. I do know this though, he better not go into this Saturday's playoff game with that bull crap of an offensive plan. His freaking job is depending on it
